+ -1 moreThis company came out and did an excellent job at cleaning and repairing my chimney. I was very happy with their work I give them an a+. I needed my chimney completely rebuild from the roofline up. I have a 2 story house with a really high roof and the set up scaffold. Their was 3 masons that did the work and they really knew what they were doing. I see why they are master masons.They completed the job in 2 days and cleaned up all the mess they made and carried off all the old mortar and stuff. Good going guys.
Description of Work: Cerrito Chimney Master Masonry (AKA Chim Chimnee) came out to my house for a chimney cleaning and an estimate for some chimney repair work I needed. I got their name from a friend that has been using this company for 5 years.Well their mason Holland came out, on time and did a great job cleaning and didn't make a mess like the last 3 company's that cleaned my chimney did and gave us a written 21 point inspection explaining any problems. Our chimney was really dirty, and Cerrito did a great job to clean it throughly and found cracks in my firebox, and repaired them at no charge. I got 4 other estimates for the chimney repair I needed, and this company was the best, (not the cheapest) in explaining what they was going to do and when they were going to do it. I asked them for 10 references and called all 10 of them and got high grades for all of them.I did my homework and that's why I used this company. They gave their word and keep their promise. I recommended them to our neighbors and they also did a repair for them. I was worried about the bricks and mortar not matching like some of the chimneys in our neighborhood that really looke terrible. I am really fussy about my home and want everything just so, and Cerrito delivered more than I expected. I would highly recommend this company to all. Thanks Cerrito Mastery Masonry.

+ -1 moreStay away from this company. $100 inspection missed a large hole inside the chimney that was visible by looking up with a flashlight. Cancelled several times for repair and did a horrible job repairing a crack in the crown that wasn't repaired correctly. Owner is a jerk. Do not use this company.

+ -1 moreI called two other companies to get some information on getting our chimney cleaned, and the first one said they didn't take any afternoon appointments, and then the second one said they only take appointments from 8 :00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and couldn't"t even get to our house for 10 days. We work from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. neither one could make it after 3. We called Chimney Cricket and they said they could make it the next day and after 3 was no problem. They definitely worked around our schedule. And then when he came he was great, explained everything he was doing and how often we need to have our chimney cleaned. Cleaned also cleaned the glass door. He was in and out. We will be calling this company from now on. Its great to find someone that would work around our work schedule so we wouldn't have to get out of work just for him to clean our chimney.

+ -1 moreWe had a terrible experience with them. We had them out multiple times last year and ended up never getting the job done. They kept showing up unprepared. They said they would have to get extra equipment which would increase the quote they gave us. That happened 2 or 3 times. Therefore we still have some things that haven't been resolved. They never gave us an accurate quote.

Our chimney service professional performed the following: Inspection of key parts of the flue and firebox thorough cleaning with fiberglass rods and appropriate brush for our flue meticulous cleanup of the firebox and the glass doors...nice touch !!! advised that it might be a good idea to sand, prime and paint area on roof Overall, he was prompt (called beforehand to let us know he was coming...great), was confident and very competent in his work and kept the area clean that he needed access to. I would certainly recommend their work for myself and for others. Very pleased. I particularly appreciated his professionalism and the extent to which he kept things clean...showed great respect for his work and for the customer !
Description of Work: I made an appointment for Chimney Cricket to come out to our home and to perform a chimney cleaning and inspection. It took maybe just over a week to be scheduled in...considering the week before was Thanksgiving that was very understandable. Provided me a time for appointment and he was right on schedule.

+ 1 moreHe did okay but I tried to call them to come back this last year and I couldn't get through to them so I was surprised. I thought they were out of business. I thought he was a little fly-by-nighty because it was just a guy working out of his home. He did a good job. I think I got a disconnected number when I called but I don't remember. I think I would use them again if I could get hold of them.
Description of Work: I used The Chimney Cricket to check the fireplaces in a rental property. He put on a cap on the chimney there and then he came over to my place and put a damper on the top.

dryer vent cleaning
+ -1 moreChris was easy to contact. I had recently purchased a home that had a homemade dryer vent system that had never been cleaned. It was clearly unsafe and and needed major repairs. After seeing the venting, Chris knew that this would take more time than the standard dryer vent cleaning and asked to return on a different day. He carefully explained what approach he would take and provided me with a written estimate. He scheduled the repair for a different day. He called once to reschedule. He arrived on time on the rescheduled day and worked for several hours to complete the job. He did an outstanding job, was courteous, detail oriented and left no mess when he was finished. This was probably one of the worst dryer vents he has ever seen. While I paid a larger sum of money than he would normally charge this was a much larger job than normal. He assured me that it would not be this major in the future as long as I scheduled regular maintenance. He was concerned with doing everything correctly to keep my family safe. I would absolutely hire him again.
Description of Work: Extensive reworking, repair and cleaning of previously uncleaned and unsafe dryer vent.

I would have had him do the repairs, however, did not have the money at the time and was able to do one repair. I still have some work to have done on the chimney and when I get the time and money I will be calling this gentleman again to do the repairs.

+ 1 moreHe was awful. He actually gave the quote really well but we tried to hire him and he never returned our phone calls. That went on for about a month so we decided to hire somebody else. He also made some inappropriate comments to my wife. I wasn't here but my wife was actually here when he came to do the estimate.
Description of Work: We got a quote from The Chimney Cricket to do tuckpointing on the chimney and a little masonry work on the cap.

+ -1 moreWe set the appointment 4 days ahead. He gave me a 3 hour time window (should arrive at my home between 10 and 1 pm) and said he would call before coming. He never called or showed up. He also didn't respond to my email and phone messages. Last year he repaired my chimney and installed our woodburning furnace. He did a great job, which is why I called upon him this year to clean my chimney. Although he was often late to our appointments, he called ahead to inform us he was running late. If figured he was running late this time, but when I received no response at all, after repeatedly trying, I gave up. Now I will use someone else.

+ -1 moreI could write a book! First appt. only 1 guy showed when 2 were needed, so nothing done. Next time showed early, replaced brick, but no window. Next time they didn't show. Called 1/2 hour after the appointed window. Wanted to come at 6pm (in Oct. in MI?). George offered to come out on his day off, Sunday. Never showed. He later commented that he worked 7 days a week for the past 3 months, hmm. Stormy gave me $50 off for the inconvenience. George was to come on Nov. 1 from 2-5. He showed at 10am. The work seems OK so far. Did not reconnect dryer vent and did not mention it, so now no dryer. Price was reasonable unless you include the 5 days of vacation I had to take from work to get it done. Do yourself a favor and find someone else!
Description of Work: Brick and sill had fallen away from house. Replace and tuck point. Also replace window and dryer vent below.

+ 0 moreThe rebuild was OK. When I pointed out some stucco that looked like it needed to be repaired, they stated that if it was a problem, the would come back and fix it. Of course it was a problem along with other areas. No one would return my calls. I'm not having the stucco repaired by someone else.

As the exterior of the chimney was weathering, we decided to go ahead and have it repaired, including the damper, so that it is now a safely functioning fireplace. Chimney Cricket was prompt to give us an estimate, very courteous, and was able to work us into this schedule in a timely fashion.

+ 1 moreIt went very well, but took longer than I expected due to the many days of cold weather and snow. He wasn't able to do the exterior chimney work until it warmed up at least to above 30 degrees for safety reasons and adhesion of masonry materials.
Description of Work: Christopher installed a new liner, repaired the exterior masonry work, and installed our brand new wood-burning furnace add-on into the chimney.

+ 0 moreOnce the work was finished, there was a number of smears of mortar on the brick itself, and a fair amount of waste mortar on the driveway around the base of the chimney. About 18 months later, I'm up on the roof looking at putting up a satellite dish, and I notice piles of mortar and bits of loose brick. I take a close look at the chimney, and none of the repointing is still in place, two bricks have fallen out altogether, and bits of the concrete top are missing completely. I called in a couple of other companies, and got estimates on repairing the 'original work'. I ended up spending $1200 to put right the damage that should have been prevented by the original work I'd already paid for.
Description of Work: After purchasing our new home, we arranged to have Chim Chimnee (also called Cerrito Master Masonary etc) clean and inspect the chimney on the wood fireplace. They cleaned the chimney - told us we had some cracks in the back of the fireplace that needed fixing, and also that the top of the chimney and some of the pointing needed redoing. It looked reasonable, and the price wasn't too bad - so we had it done. The gentleman doing the work never seemed comfortable doing the work, or in exactly what it was he was doing.

+ 1 moreThis was a positive experience from start to finish. Chimney Cricket was prompt and thorough with their estimate, and Chris, unasked, even tried to repair my screen door on the way out. They kept in touch, arrived when they said, did excellent work very quickly, left the work site immaculate, and performed several small tasks that were not part of the job while they were on the roof. There were no extra charges at all. These are craftsmen.
Description of Work: Took down old crumbling chimney and replaced it; repaired hole in roof; tuckpointed veneer brick at front of house.

+ 0 moreThey responded to my first call quickly and came out to provide an estimate. I was unable to be home at the time so he just stopped by and left the estimate in the mailbox. Once we decided to go forward with the job, they arrived on time (in fact a day early) and the work was done quickly. The only delay was caused by weather. Both the chimney and porch look great; I am very happy with the results. They were helpful and did some extra little things that needed to be done. I would be happy to use them again!
Description of Work: We had several rows of brick replaced on the chimney. We also had them clean and resurface our front porch and replace a portion of the front walkway. As an added touch, cultured stone was added to the porch.

+ -1 moreThe service person arrived with a few tools for cleaning the chimney but did not put down any protective covering around the chimney. He spent approximately 15 minutes cleaning and then told us that he could not completely clean the chimney because it was covered with creosote that he could not remove. He warned us to not use the fireplace because it was dangerous to use and the creosote could catch on fire. He told us we would need to have a chemical applied to the chimney - for $175 and then have the chimney recleaned - for $104.95. (Several days earlier another representative of the company had also told us we needed to replace our damper ($395.00) and do masonry work on top of the chimney for an additional $500.00.) We contacted another company. That person came out, completed cleaned the chimney including removing all the creosote, told us the chemical that had been recommended was environmentally dangerous especially for animals (we have 2 cats), simply oiled the damper and moved it until it worked just fine and suggested that if we wanted him to check the top of the chimney to call us in the spring.

+ -1 moreThe following prices were quoted: $395.00 to replace damper, $99.95 to clean the fire place and $500.00 to perform masonry work on the chimney. Though we were surprised by the cost we made arrangements for the chimney to be cleaned 5 days later. Subsequently we learned from another chimney sweep company that we did not need to have our damper replaced and that it would be difficult to determine if any chimney masonry work needed to be done until he could get on the roof in the spring.
Description of Work: A young man from the company came to give us an estimate on how much it would cost to fix our damper as well as make arrangements to have our chimney cleaned. He was pleasant, examined the chimney briefly and then told us we would need to have the damper replaced. He also noted that we needed masonry work on our chimney based on his observation from a deck below the roof.

+ -1 moreHad three estimates, all three contractors showed up late. Chose this one because they were least expensive. They canceled my first appointment. They showed up on time for the second one, but the repairman had to leave for supplies. He worked hard to finish the job, but he had to put two different size flue caps on because that's all he had. He said he would return and replace one. He also said he usually takes a picture of the repair (before and after) but he forgot his camera. I didn't have mine at home. He finished in about three hours and left no mess. Repair was done on 9-20-08, it's now 11-14-08 and nobody has returned. I received one phone call telling me they were coming out, no one showed up.
Description of Work: Replace two chimney flues and repair crown.
