ASI IMPROVEMENT CO

Only contractor from the phone book to return my calls. Contacted 4 companies to bid the job, 2 were from referrals from family or friends and 1 contractor was doing my neighbors house. ASI had the lowest bid. Everything I wanted done was in writing to my specifications including matching the existing shingles we had put up on the south side of the house, earlier in the year. The owner of the business was easy to talk to although at times seemed a little goofy. The crew (2 guys) seemed a little unprofessional in their appearance, but they knew what they were doing, started early and worked very hard to get the job done in 2 days. Clean up was top notch and they explained everything along the way.

ASI started the job on time and appeared to doing everything per the written estimate. However, at the end of the first day it was apparent that there were going to be problems. Instead of the bottom edge being straight it was jagged and showed that there was no concern for workmanship. The poor workmanship was pointed out and we were told it would be corrected. However, the next day their crew continued to install the roof with the bottom edges being all crooked and jagged on two more sides of the building. At that point I demanded that the front and side visible to the road be straightened out. Though they supposable tried, the visual appearance was still poor. When they finished and wanted to be paid, we held off the last payment. When I did a walk through to check the roof I found several issues that I wanted addressed. First, the only valley on the roof looked like it had been slapped together with whatever scrap pieces of metal roofing they had left and didn't look very weather tight. Second, there were areas of the ridge vent where there was no filtering material. Meaning bugs and animals could easily get into the attic area. Then we had a strong rain and the metal roof leaked. I couldn't beleive it. I contacted them and the promptly sent someone out to check out the leaks. I pointed out that around the whole building the metal roof stuck out at least an inch passed the drip edge, accept for the valley where the roof stopped before the drip edge. Which, by the way, was one of the places the roof was leaking. I thought that they should have realized this, they were supposed to be the professionals. They then cobbled the valley repair, which did stop the leak. Installed the roof vent material that was missing. Their excuse for the missing vent material was that the crew ran out of the material while installing the roof vent and just continued the installation without it. What? Then they found several spots where the roof was leaking "due to the nails not being driven down enough". The building is located at 5171 Fenton Rd, Flint, MI, feel free to drive by and look at the quality of the work and judge it for yourself. I would not recommend this company even though the owner was a very nice guy.
