We hired a large hardscape project to be completed in 4-6 weeks from a landscape company. When that landscaper was unable to complete the job and abandoned the job late in the fall (in breech of contract), we hired Smith Tree and Landscape to complete minimal work to mitigate safety concerns for the condition the the first landscaper left the yard in. This included making the front walk usable and the front door accessible, removing excess material from the original grade, and general clean up. I had met with the designer for Smith Landscaping to walk through the project site and we agreed to a scope of work. After Smith Tree and Landscape staff were onsite for 2 hours, the job was presented as completed. Unfortunately, a number of items previously confirmed to be in scope were not completed. Another staff person (Mark) followed up and arranged for some of the items to be completed as previously agreed to, but indicated there was not enough material onsite to bring the walkway to the front of the house to a height in which the previously installed step could be used to access the front porch (The previous walkway was removed by the earlier landscape and left dug out in prep for base material, uneven, and covered with leaves. Smith Tree was going to grade and cover with plywood). After much back and forth and follow up, Mark constructed steps for use in accessing the front porch. Mark however, indicated that was not enough material on site to address the height of the walk. As compensation to not filling the trenches or raising the level of walk, Mark offered a discount to the balance, but despite multiple requests, an adjusted statement was never received to reflect the adjustment. With the thaw in the spring, we were able to confirm that in excess of 6" of new material was left over the original grade in much of the yard, despite being very clear about not having more than 2" of additional material (more than 2" can cause damage to the root system of the trees in the yard). Also this spring, the steps failed while someone was stepping up on the front porch causing minor personal injury. Smith did not respond to communication regarding our concerns with the steps provided. When we removed the broken steps, we lifted the plywood to find no grading or raking had been done - as they was a layer of leaves under the plywood. We also added 6 wheelbarrow loads of dirt to the area to raise the grade (without making a dent in the material left in the yard) in to easily use the previous step. And despite asking to meet in person and follow up communication that we had not received an updated balance statement, they referred our account to collections. Prior to this, we had been a long term customer of Smith Tree and Landscape using their tree related services to maintain the health of the trees in our yard. I do not know if the lack of customer service or concern for customer safety is a result of recent company organizational changes, but given the lack of quality services and care for public safety, we will not be using them again.

They are a great company. They are very passionate about the trees. I've never had a problem. The fertilization is a continual service. They are coming out to remove a dead tree for me soon. The total for removing the tree and grinding the stump is $710. They are pretty honest, they will tell you which trees are worth saving and which ones ones that won't have a long life span, they even told me the names of all these trees. They are very knowledgeable.

Wonderful experience.Don was very nice and very professional. He was early for the scheduled job time. Walked around the house with me, and talked through everything with me. I received some great insight on my issues. He was very honest, Don said I didn't need to get ant treatment, as he saw no live trails. He gave me suggestions to resolve the ant problem if they returned. Very Reasonable pricing compared to other companies. Don even returned the next day free of charge, I noticed the yellow jackets inside, right after he left. I noticed that a few yellow jackets had actually gotten in through my attic entry way, which was next to the siding entry point where the nest was. He sprayed and taped off the entry point. Very nice company and employees, great prices. Would recommend to other home owners!
Description of Work: I had yellow jackets building a nest behind the siding on my house. There was a lot of them too! I also had ants getting in one spot of my house for 2 weeks straight.

Called Smith Tree on Monday, June 6, 2016 and spoke to Chris Smith by phone. Told him that I had been in contact with MSU about a problem with my oak tree. Explained the info that MSU gave me & the services needed to address the problem of a two lined chestnut borer determined by MSU. He told me over the phone that he did not think that we needed the trunk injection suggested by MSU. He seemed aloof over the phone & told me to leave the information with his office staff and he would get back to me. When I asked him when he would get back in contact with me he said Tuesday or Wednesday. He came to my house on Wednesday unannounced. He very roughly pulled away and breaking apart at a 10 year old visually open healthy flowering hydrangea vine and clematis vine climbing on the oak tree, laughing under his breath, shaking his head and after a few minutes of discussion, in a condescending manner told me they could not do it. .I told him it appeared to me that he did not have the "attitude for it". I believe that he did not like the fact that someone from MSU had already viewed the tree and gave us his professional opinion. The professor from MSU had a PHD and travelled to view problem trees around the state I believe Chris Smith was very unprofessional in both attitude and workmanship, and in my opinion, didn't want to perform the work as we did not contact Smith Tree first, as the solution was not his idea and as the job was too small for his liking. I would not consider using Smith Tree in the future. I later called the offices of Smith Tree to speak to Chris Smith to inform him that I would placing my comments on Angies List. He was not available so I left the information with a member of his staff who I knew from the past. She would let him know.

The receptionist was great, as usual. She referred me to Chris. I could tell by his tone of voice that he really didn't want to do this job, but he offered to take a look at it, which he did during the noon hour. He told me that the tree wasn't going anywhere and that the added weight of the snow would make no difference. My building contractor (I am updating the house inside and out) had told me the opposite and was very concerned about the added weight causing further damage. Chris reluctantly quoted (verbally) a figure of not less that $800 and not more than $1,200. Another employee would have to look at the job after 5pm and they could not start the job until the next day. If it started to snow, they would have to quit. At this point, I was convinced that even if I accepted their offer, the tree would not be removed before the coming snow storm, so I declined. (The other company I contacted called me back soon after and managed to do everything I wanted and more! See the review of Wiseman Tree Experts for the rest of this story.) In the end, this part of Lansing received 9.6" of heavy, wet snow. I was glad I did not take Chris' advice to leave the tree. [PLEASE NOTE: This review only applies to Smith Tree Service. Smith Floral and Greenhouses is an EXCELLENT company that I have always been pleased with in the forty years I have done business with them.]
Description of Work: My family had been a long time Smith customer, so I called them (and another company) for an urgent job to remove a fallen tree from a wind storm that was resting on the house and a patio roof. There was a snow storm warning, and I was anxious to remove the fallen tree as the snow was expected to be heavy and wet.

My neighbor has a large tree overhangng my yard. The tree is dying, but the neighbors will not cut it down. In the past 2 months, I've had two very large limbs land on my property - one that would have crushed my car had it been in the driveway. I called Smith for an estimate of what it would cost to cut the limbs back to the property line. The receptionist was very pleasant and scheduled me. The next day, however, I got a call from Chris, who has never been to my property or seen the tree. He lectured me about (1) how he couldn't cut the tree limbs back to the property line and (2) talking with the neighbors and (3) the problem with cutting back and not having the lower limbs cushion the higher limbs. I explained that there were NO lower limbs, but he was undettered in his lecture. I finally stopped him, mentioned that he had not even seen the tree and that I was not asking him to cut the tree but to look at it and give me an estimate. Instead of apologizing for lecturing me, he was taken aback and said "he'd swing by sometime to take a look." Well, no thanks. If this is how the business treats people just to get an estimate, I'm not interested. I canceled immediately after.

It went exceptionally well. Smith tree had the highest quote of the three quotes we obtained. We went with Smith because of the rapport developed with the salesperson. We felt that we could trust them to do a job that we would be satisfied with. We were not disapointed. The finished job not only met but exceeded our expectations. Extremley satisfied, we will use Smith Tree again. You get what you pay for so to speak, in this case the higher quote was the better choice. The professionalisum and the finished product was worth the extra cost. Hassel free, Smith performed as they advertised.

I use Smith Tree and Landscape, and I like them very much. Once, one of the products they were using caused damage to some shrubs and Smith Tree was very helpful in convincing the company that made the product that some of the bushes were damaged even though it didn't show it that much. They were very helpful in helping me get compensation for the damage caused by that product.

I have used Smith's in the past for tree services. It has always been great! So when I needed some extension landscape services I called them. Kim came out to my house, listened to what I wanted, showed me many examples of what I wanted and then went to draw up both an estimate and a plan of the landscaping. The landscaping plan was very specific and detailed and I could envision the placment and types of plantings being recommended, which reflected what I had discussed. Once approved, work started promptly and was completed promptly. Kim was in contact with me as work progressed and within 3 days, I had a beautiful landscaped yard that I could not be happier with. I highly recommend Smith Tree and Kim for their landscapping services.

The work went really well. They did an excellent job and completed the work quickly and thoroughly. The trees were removed with the area left free of debris. They were friendly, professional and answered all of our questions. It took about a month between when we requested the work to when it was actually performed but they let us know that this would be the case. The work involved two locations: our house and our son's property.

My wife made an appointment with Jeff to come out and give us an estimate to cut down 2 Douglas firs and replace them with another kind of tree, remove 3 zebra grasses, trim a smoke tree and refresh mulch all around the house. Jeff told my wife that he would have someone come over and estimate the amount of mulch and would then send an estimate for the work. Two weeks went by and she decided to call Smith Tree to find out why we had not received an estimate. We never did see anyone come to estimate the amount of mulch. The receptionist seemed surprised that we had not received an estimate and told my wife that she would look into it and should receive a call back that day. But no call came. No apology. No estimate. Four weeks went by. We hired another company. I should note that we have used Smith Tree in the past and the work was done to satisfaction but the prices are high.

I am a serious gardener and my yard is mostly planted. No grass at all. The area the tree was in was fenced for dogs so it was extremely difficult to take the tree down without damaging the fencing. They did an excellent job and were extremely careful, all the while getting a lot done quickly. They had to climb the tree to remove it as the bucket truck couldn't get close enough to be used. I know they charged more because they had to climb and cut, but I really can't imagine another company doing such a good job. They were worth every cent and I highly recommend them and wouldn't call anyone else to work in my yard.
