Description of Work: Replacement of crumbling asphalt driveway with concrete. Years before I bought my house, a long stretch of the concrete driveway had been replaced with asphalt. It wasn't in great shape when I moved in and over the years, continued to develop large holes and crumble away. Able Concrete came in, gave me a detailed estimate and explanation of what they would need to do and then proceeded to do an excellent job of removing the asphalt and putting in new concrete. I am thrilled with the results from every aspect and wold highly recommend the company.

Description of Work: Less than 6 months after new driveway was laid, a crack appeared going completely across the driveway. I suspect it happened because the roots of a nearby pine tree were not cut away enough and the tree swayed enough to allow the remaining tree roots to heave the ground below the concrete and make the crack.

Description of Work: Very cordial, clean up was good, but I thought they were a little pricey. Maybe I'm not on top of my game, but for a cement apron and 2 large separated areas(16 x 18)combined, I thought they could do it for less. There aren't that many concrete places in Lansing, so the choices aren't that many.

Description of Work: I got three bids from long-established vendors. ABLE was the low bid and the most professional in outlining their procedures. They arrived early on the specified date, tore out the old concrete and framed out the space. Next day, they poured the concrete. On Day 3 they took out the framing and put in soil along the edges so that I could plant grass seed. We were pleased by their professionalism and attention to detail. Failed to mention that they poured only one-half of the driveway. The other half is in passably shape, and we saw no reason to pour it at this time. The cost would otherwise have been considerably higher.

Curtis Hagelberger came out and did the quote. The first time, we decided to wait a bit longer. In the summer of 2009 we decided to pull the trigger. We called them back and got an updated quote. They ended up getting into more than they had bargained for. There was significantly more to tear out than I think they anticipated. On top of that, the area between our privacy fence and the house (where the driveway runs) was too narrow to turn their bobcat's around in or drive their trucks up and down. I think it was a nightmare for them. To their credit, they joked about it but never complained. Nor did my quote ever change. They were patient with me while I worked with my fencing and gate contractors to decide how we were gonna make the fence and gate work with a driveway that was now going to sit about six inches below it's previous level. They helped troubleshoot the new issues like drainage, runoff, grading it into the existing garage floor that was now at a different height than the driveway. It ended up looking great and has held up well so far. We have a small crack in one area and a little shifting in the sidewalk squares. Minor and probably expected. Their crews were always very polite and professional and their clean up was great. Everyone from Steve and Jean down was very easy to work with. After everything was completed, I asked them for an opportunity to earn some business from them with their group health insurance policy. We had a meeting and everything seemed to go pretty well, but then they stopped communicating with us. We placed several phone calls and emails to Steve, Jean, & Curtis with no response. I would have been okay with a simple no if they were not interested in making changes to their plan, but to simply not return calls is a bit unprofessional. That said, if you are looking for a residential concrete contractor, I would (and already have) recommend them based on my experience.
Description of Work: Removal of existing asphalt and concrete. Pour new drive way and a few sidewalk squares.

They poured the driveway about eight inches narrower than the garage door. When I complained I had a terrible time getting them to come out and acknowledge the problem. They poured a step at an angle that was about three times the normal angle and I had to involve the township inspector in order to get them to fix it. Apparently the person who measured originally did it incorrectly but the crew did not challenge it at all. I think the problem with the steps was caused by carelessness. The worst part is that they refused to address or acknowledge the problem. I do not recommend them.
Description of Work: Able Concrete poured a new driveway, steps to the sidewalk, and a sidewalk to the front door.

Continued Complaint: The asphalt patch at the city street was not done correctly and pools water, cracking, dropping and looks terrible. But again I was charged full price and was told that the city would do the patch into the street, I wanted experts to do that work with asphalt and not a concrete company and was even charged a permit fee by this company for that. I started bring concerns to them prior to the pour and after and was continued to be promised that they would make things right but all they did was to string me along until I made final payment. (A mistake that I should not have made, but their representative Mark Burkhart was so believable and said he could be trusted to carry through. Was I mistaken.) I even put things in writing via faxes dated 10-3-07 and 10-11-07. Prior to the pouring of the concrete on October 3rd, a field supervisor named Eric met at my property and assured me that even though the forms were 3 1/2 " that the concrete pour would be 4" and I took his word on it and allowed the pouring to go ahead since he indicated that the truck was on it's way. After my October 11th fax concerning the pooling Eric met me at my house again and promised to fix the problem with putting down additional asphalt or re-cutting into the street and redoing the asphalt patch. This was not done, instead the salesman, Mark Burkhart put down a liquid type material that looks like some type of tar on the city street on the west side of the entrance. Not only is the appearance not professional and unsightly, but the drainage problem continues and rainwater still pools at the street; so the fix made things worst and I am very dissatisfied. When I contact their office and spoke to ownership, Jean McKenna, I was just referred back to the salesman Mark Burkhart, who dismissed my concerns and refused to do anything else to address the problem or the other concerns. I even went as far as filing a complaint with the BBB, they were not able to get this company to address my concerns and work with me. When I spoke to a building inspector, he informed that that this company had the same problem with the cut into the street with another customer and they redid the cut out and patch, but did not understand why they could not do that for me. I filed a complaint with the state agency but even though they received a written form from the building inspector that he witnesses some of the concerns I had, they closed the complaint stating that the inspector was unable to verify poor workmanship or code violations and that I could consult an attorney or discuss other avenues of legal redress. So with the continuing degrading of my driveway it appears that I will have to consult an attorney and see what my legal options are. This company is giving me no choice in the matter.
Description of Work: Remove old driveway, sidewalk, garage floor and steps. Replace driveway 4" depth and 6" on east side and at the street using 6 sack plastic reinforced concrete. Remove old foundation material and replace with sand base and compact. Cut away into the city street with the city completing with asphalt patch to match street and to prevent rainwater from pooling. Replace steps and sidewalk. Starting complaint: Very poor workmanship and terrible customer service after payment in full was made. Their final refusal to repair or refund was made on July 11, 2008 to the better business bureau and myself. Since that time things have gotten worst, there are two sections out of eight in the driveway that I noticed have dropped since this month (Feb. '09). I have no idea if this is just the beginning and if things will get worst. One of the things mentioned in their July letter was that "While I fail to see how someone can have a complaint about something that may or may not happen in the future, we see that he has made one." They were obviously wrong. I paid for 6 and 4 inches of concrete for the driveway and received less than that at various areas when I measured along the west side and at the sidewalk, how shallow is it in the main sections I wonder, if it is short along the sides, and I was charged full price and I'm also concerned that without the proper depth, that there could be cracking and dropping, they also did not vibrate the concrete which could also be a reason that it is settling. The width of the drive was measured incorrectly by the company's salesperson at 18 feet, which is not wide enough to park two vehicles side by side and exit without having to step off the drive on either side.
