The price was competitive with other contractors, but we had no idea of how many problems we were taking on by hiring Bob and Castle Builders. The main problems came with the subcontractors that Bob selected. The subcontractors would show up unexpectedly (and unexpectedly early in the morning!) and on those occasions when we expected them to come (either because of a pattern of work we'd observed or because they told us they would come), they didn't show up or showed up extremely late. The biggest incident was when they were digging the foundation and failed to check for any lines buried where they were digging. They stopped work for the day around 3pm and went home. Later that evening we got a really bad rainstorm. During their digging, they had hit the sump pump line and as a result, all of the water was coming back into the basement. We spent the entire night trying to bail out the water, but it was coming in faster than we could pump it out. The water had reached knee level around 5am and after the rain stopped, we were able to pump it out with a portable pump and a hose. Finally, morning came and we called Bob, but he didn't show up until after we had pumped out the basement. We lost between $1500-$2000 worth of stuff, not to mention the entire night we spent pumping out that cold, dirty water. He offered no apologies, refused to pay for any of the damage, and tried to deny that it was his fault, although he was with the subcontractor during the digging. He even admitted that they hit something, but didn't know what it was. He didn't even bother to try and figure out what he'd hit---had they found out what was damaged, they could have fixed it before the rain started. We were so glad to have the project done and Bob out of our life---after we had to call him to repair the holes in the ceiling where water was leaking!

Response from CASTLE BUILDERS INC
The problem with this property is it's location. The sump line she wrote about was nothing more than a short line buried outside her house. The house itself is located below the level of the road and slopes to the backyard, where the water stays until it dries up. There is no place for the water to go or to be pumped. The foundation of the house in the area where we were putting the addition is a stacked stone foundation with no mortar holding the entire assembly together. The basement had water lines where it had flooded prior to when we were at the residence. She had just bought the house without any inspections, and was looking to have someone replace her storage materials(junk) because of a lack of responsibility on her part. She had rented the house to her sister while she was having the work done, and getting them up at 9 - 10 am was almost impossible. The issues started when her sister was too lazy to take their huge dog outside to use the bathroom. We would come to work in the morning to find huge piles of steaming dog feces in the new addition. When I asked her to please have her sister or someone to not let the dog crap all over the floor, she replied that her sister would not do that. My subs did their job as quickly as possible until the dog feces issue. They refused to enter the building until I had gone out and cleaned up the piles of dog feces in the new addition.Of course it slowed things down, but we did get it all completed and inspected and approved by the building dept. Any issues that she had after were taken care of immediately. She also had a junk dryer that one sub did break a knob off of. He didnt just replace the knob,he replaced the entire dryer.. If there were any complaints they were never brought to my attention. The contract was paid. It was only after the fact that she decided to start this vendetta against me and my company. This is the problem: Everyone wants something additional done for free, and that can be included into a contract. It's called JAC(Jack Ass Clause). This woman has taken the top spot on that list. I would caution any builder to beware of this person or anyone she would know that needs work done. She and her sisiter live like pigs, but that is normal for some people. If they choose to live that way it is their perogative, but don't expect me to pay for the junk that they are hoarding in piles in their basement. I am surprised they don't have rats or other vermin.
