 + -1 moreA little difficult getting scheduled, but this is peak season and it is a small business. 2 workers came, they did the work cleanly and efficiently and gave me several helpful suggestions. They also pointed out that my chase top has advanced rusting and needs repair. They were on time, polite, wore shoe covers and carefully covered the carpet and hearth area. They provided a detailed written summary of the work and inspection.

 + 0 moreAll went well. Professionals looked to reduce costs by examining existing chimney cap to try to remedy problems with that cap without replacing. That attempt, unfortunately, was not a plausible solution, therefore a new cap was installed. Service was exceptional...both focused and expedient. Definitely quality service with Parchment Chimney.

I believe he was finally motivated to return my deposit after the Better Business Bureau contacted him and ultimately lowered the ranking of Parchment Chimney based on his lack of response. Since he has finally returned my money, I've changed my overall rating from 'F' to 'C'... but I'm also going to leave my original complaint here for others to read so that they can be forewarned about what they might have to go through.

I think this is reasonable since it is clear that my encounter with Parchment Chimney goes beyond just an estimate or consultation.) | |Details for you: | |In April 2014, I got an estimate from Mark Hansen, owner of Parchment Chimney Service, for $1000 of work on my chimney, and on June 4, 2014, I signed a contract for him to do the work and put down a $250 deposit towards the work. At that point in time, he said that he would be able to get to my chimney in July 2014. | |I left messages at the office number twice during the month of July and NEVER received a call back. | |On August 8th, I called Mr. Hansen's cell phone and spoke with him; he indicated that they would get to my chimney in 2-3 weeks. | |On Sept. 8th, I left messages at both the office and cell -- got no response. | |On Sept. 16th, I left messages at both the office and cell, asking if they were going to get to my chimney this month or refund my deposit. | |On Sept. 17th, I finally reached Mr. Hansen in the office and he explained that he was running behind because two of his men had been out of commission this summer due to medical concerns. He said that they'd still be able to do my chimney by the 3rd week of October. I said that was fine, but I also requested a call from him if he was going to have to push the date back any further. | |On Oct. 22, I left messages at both the office and cell requesting an update on when work would occur. I got NO RESPONSE. | |On Oct. 24th, I left messages at both the office and cell requesting that my deposit be returned within the next two weeks. | |On Nov. 26th, I sent a certified letter to Mr. Hansen at Parchment Chimney Service asking that my deposit be returned since the work had not been yet started and the masonry season was effectively over due to the cold temps. | |On Dec. 1, Mr. Hansen called me and said that he could refund my deposit OR he could come to work on my chimney that week. I requested that he refund my deposit since, by now, it was quite cold out (with temps in the high 30s) and I know that most chimney masons do NOT work when it is that cold out because it is difficult to do a good job. At this point I did not trust him to do the job correctly -- I was worried that I'd get a slap-dash sort of job to just get it done and get the money. | |Mr. Hansen said that he would send me $150 that week and another $100 the week after. | |It is now January 12, 2015, and I have NOT received my money back and had NO communication from Mr. Hansen as to why he didn't mail the check. | |Mr. Hansen appears to be a man of good intentions, but for whatever reason, his business is underwater financially right now and I would NOT recommend doing business with him.

 + 0 moreI had a Saturday appointment which was nice, I didn't have to miss work during the week to get home for their visit. I just moved into this house 6 months ago and just wanted to make sure the fireplace and chimney were ok before I start any fires. I was given the inspection and cleaning quote over the phone. Upon arrival , one quick glance up the chimney determined cleaning wasn't needed, so that was good. but the guy was in my house for only about 10 mins for the total inspection and I think $75 for a quick look is kind of pricey. but he was nice and professional and knowledgable.

Called Mark and he reviewed the report, inspected the firebox - giving me tips on how to repair the parts I could do myself, and came back the next day to inspect the flue / perform the repairs. This was all on very short notice. Was very friendly, helpful and did a great job and a reasonable price. Since he was already making a trip to Grand Rapids, he was able to swing by my workplace to provide the invoice / receipt. Absolute pleasure to work with, highly recommended.
Description of Work: Inspected fireplace and chimney to provide estimate for free. Repaired cracked flue tiles with missing grout near the top of the chimney.

He did it bylooking through binoculars. He indicated that I would receive a quote the following week. I never heard from them again. I got someone else to do the repair.

 + 0 moreOverall it was beyond my expectations. We all have had our contractor experiences. So, when I say Mark and Parchment were outstanding, I am not over-exaggerating. If you have a chimney issue, do not delay, call Mark at Parchment. Mark is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS, another chimney guy, Tom at Michigana in Sturgis was very helpful on the phone. He did not come out due to travel, but he was willing to discuss my chimney issues with me on the phone for almost 30 minutes and helped me understand that I needed to call for a second quote and Tom was right. After I called Mark at Parchment and Mark came out and quoted half of Redbud Chimney, and then actually performed the quote way beyond my expectations, I was very pleased with Mark and his guys for an outstanding job and Tom for taking a lot of time on the phone with me, to discuss every aspect of the job. Who has the time to discuss the job on the phone these days? Tom did. So, thank you Tom at Michiana in Sturgis, Mi too.
Description of Work: Rebuit firebox. Removed old damper and installed new at chimney top. Swept out Chimney. Washed exterior. Used grinder to grind out the joints and tuck pointed. Clean lines. Beautiful job. Mark and his team were friendly, explained every step they took, answered all of my dumb questions without making me feel dumb. But the greatest service they provided was a price that was HALF of Redbud Chimney of Buchanan. And Parchment did more for $1530 than Redbud quoted for $3300. Mark drove out to quote. Then Mark and his team drove out to do the work. Then Mark and another returned on a Sunday morning to complete the job, about 30 minutes of work on a Sunday. Mark drove each way about 45 minutes each time to get my job done and on time. Mark is manufacturing a concrete hearth for a second fireplace in my house. Parchment is best!

 + -1 moreThe cap and bricks below were cracked and in need of repair. I called for an estimate and they were at my house on a Sunday to give me an estimate. The estimate was not the cheapest but not the most either and they really seemed to know what they were talking about, much more so than anyone else. They poured a large crown on top of the chimney, replaced the broken bricks with the extra they took out. The job took a little longer than originally estimated but the price remained the same. The crew was very nice and considerate of keeping their work mess and work station clean and contained. They were very skilled at what they did and now my chimney looks brand new.

Description of Work: I called Parchment at noon today and they came out within two hours to inspect our fireplace and chimney! They were prompt and truly wonderful. We found out that the fireplace, although 20 years old has NEVER been used!! Parchment told us exactly what we need to use the fireplace and gave us the green light to use it. Upon leaving we were told to enjoy it and that they would see us in two years when it is time for a clean! Fabulous Company!! HIGHLY Recommend!

They arrived on time, cleaned the chimney and fireplace insert in a timely fashion and were very careful to leave everything soot free. (unlike chimney sweeps we've had in the past) I was also advised of cracks in the chimney wash and given an estimate for the work which can be done in the spring. They were very professional and I plan on calling them in the spring. I would recommend them to anyone needing a chimney sweep.

 + -1 moreWhen I originally called Parchment Chimney, I was incredibly impressed with their customer service. I believe I spoke directly with the serviceman, and I was given an appointment the very next day at 4pm. Two men arrived in a truck 15 minutes early (which was actually preferable, and I had told them on the phone that I would be home from work by 3:30, so it was not an inconvenience). Only one of the men came inside initially to do the inspection, and I believe the other guy was there to help clean. Mark was incredibly respectful, cheerful, and informative. He told me that my chimney was clean, but he also pointed out areas of concern (not compromising to safety). He then checked the second fireplace and was equally thorough and informative. The appointment was over before the time originally scheduled. I was not given a write-up of the services at the time, which was initially concerning to me, but when I called them shortly after, Mark was the one who took my call and assured me he would provide documentation in a few days. As it was a Friday, I did not expect to hear from him until mid-week, but Mark delivered the paperwork IN-PERSON on Sunday afternoon. It was thorough, easy to decipher, and accurate to all of the things we had discussed. Overall I was totally blown away by the quality of service that Parchment Chimney provided. I was treated respectfully, complimented on my home, and provided with everything I needed to be sure of my fireplace/chimney safety. I will definitely be consulting them in the future for any of my chimney needs.
Description of Work: I scheduled an appointment for a chimney cleaning, however upon inspecting the chimney, Mark told me that it was in fine condition and didn't require the service. I paid only for the inspection of my two fireplaces.

 + -1 moreThe Parchment Chimney folks were pleasant and professional from the start. They set up a time that was convenient to me and showed up right on time that day. The inspection went well and I was actually told that the chimney wasn't extremely dirty and could probably wait to be cleaned. We hadn't had it cleaned in many years so I asked him to go ahead and do it as long as they were there. They were very careful with controling the mess, laying out floor covering and being careful of what they touched. They working quickly and professionally. I was happy with the service and thrilled when they said that the cost was actually less than what they had quoted me. By the way, they also do free inspections every two years. Nice! They are my chimney people now!!

They spotted problem with top of chimney and showed me with digital pictures the exact detail. They will come back and repai chimney in spring. Highly recommend this company.
