Springer Builders

My wife and I were looking to replace our old wooden deck with one made of composite to reduce maintenance. In addition, we wanted vinyl railings and a pergola. We had already received one quote from another contractor and contacted Springer Builders for another. Randy came by one evening and walked us through a few examples of pergola and discussed the design of the deck. After he left, we did some more research on pergolas. What was commonly available was a free standing pergola that attached to a deck inside the railings. We were looking for a more integrated solution - where the pergola was simply an extension of the deck railing. After Googling for an hour or so, we found a solution that looked perfect and sent it to Randy. The next day he had already found a local supplier for that solution and was updating his quote - which eventually won. Because the integrated railing / pergola was a special order, there was a delay, but Randy communicated that right up front and did a great job keeping us up to date on the status of the materials. He planned the project in phases that corresponded with when the materials would be available and let us know exactly what was going to happen when. The first phase was removing the existing deck. They did a great job with that - removing every spec of debris from the property. The second phase was building the actual deck. After I got out of work, I would often run into Randy and he'd share their progress and discuss some construction decisions he was looking for my input on. In each case, he'd give me the choices, but if I didn't have a strong feeling either way, he'd provide his opinion. When he did, he'd always preface his opinion with, "If this were my deck, I would....." and, throughout the project, I always felt that he was building it as though it was going to be his deck. In fact, one day I came home, Randy was worried about a single screw that was stripped and hadn't gone into the wood as far as he wanted. I'm not sure if I ever would have even noticed it - but he found a way to get it out and replace it without damaging the wood around it. The third phase was the vinyl railing which installed very quickly (and looks great). The last phase was the pergola (which again, was a special order). We love our new deck. In fact, I wish there was a way on Angie's List to share a picture of it. It looks fantastic and there were a lot of small design choices that Randy made that added up to make a great finished product. If we were to ever build another deck, I would not hesitate to call Springer Builders.
