On Tuesday, September 4, I called Wendell Burford, and explained the continued higher water useage, and asked that he return to my home to address this issue. I stated that I did not feel I should have to pay for another service call, because his original repairs to my toilet did not restore my water useage to normal. This started a long tirade by Mr. Buford that he could not send someone out on a free service call, when I most likely had another water leak problem. Mr. Burford suggested 1) my second toilet was most likely leaking; 2) that water could be leaking into my washing machine; 3) my toilet drains were most likely clogged and needed to be cleaned out; 4) I should replace both toilets in my home as they are old (NOTE: The manufacture date inside my toilet tanks are August 7, 2001). Mr. Burford would absolutely not address the "double flushing" issue - just kept talking over me -and refused to come to my home without charging another service charge. On Monday, September 10, 2012, a serviceman from Hedlund Plumbing came to my home. The first thing he did was to check my water meter to insure that I did not have an undiscovered water leak in my home - ABSOLUTELY NO WATER LEAK. The Hedlund service man confirmed that the "double flush" in my toilet was from not having the correct flapper installed for my American Standard tank. He replaced the Korky flapper (installed by Wendell Burford) with an American Standard flapper with a styrofoam ball, which immediately returned my toilet to a single flush, using only 1/2 tank of water. Hedlund charged me $80.36, which included the American Standard flapper ($16.85). I would NEVER, EVER hire or recommend Wendell Burford, or Burford Plumbing and Heating. I believe that he recommended the replacement of my Ball float just to increase his billing. Wendell Burford does not guarantee or stand behind his work. I cannot believe he remains a licensed plumber. I will be filing a complaint with the Michigan Plumbers Licensing Bureau, and with the Better Business Bureau.
Description of Work: I had become aware that one of the toilets in my home was leaking water from the tank into the toilet bowl, and my city water bill had doubled. I called Wendell Burford, who was listed as a local Mason plumber, and he came to my home on January 5, 2012. Mr. Burford removed the flapper which was worn and warped on the edges allowing water to leak from the toilet tank, and said he would look in his truck to see if he had a replacement flapper. Mr. Burford also said that even though the ball float in my toilet was working fine, they usually only last about ten years, and recommended installation of a Fluidmaster Flush Valve. Not knowing anything about plumbing, I agreed. Mr. Burford installed the Fluidmaster Flush Valve and a Korky flapper. As I watched Mr. Burford finishing up his work, he flushed the toilet several times. He smiled at me and said "You now have a double flush". Each time he pressed the flush lever, the water would flush down and out of the toilet - incoming water would fill and swirl around the bowl - and once again flush down and out of the bowl - a "double flush". Because I had no knowledge of plumbing and proper toilet function, I simply accepted his smiling acknowledgement of the "double flush" as something positive. I paid Mr. Burford for his services - a total of $149.76 (Fluidmaster Flush Valve - $27.14; Korky flapper - $12.672: plus service call of $120.00, minus a $10.00 senior discount) and thought my malfunctioning toilet problem was solved. Two months later, my quarterly water bill was reduced but still higher than normal - which I attributed to the leaking toilet during part of that three months. So I waited until I received the next quarterly water bill, and it was 2,000 - 3,000 gallons higher useage than normal. I contacted the City of Mason for a printout of my 10 years of quarterly water useage bills, and confirmed that my water useage was indeed above normal. The "double flush" toilet was using the entire tank of water per useage, rather than one-half tank of water for a normall flush.

Response from Burford Plumbing & Heating
This toilet needed replacement. Its very hard to find parts from a 1940's Water closet that she had. Offered a full refund but it was sent back. You neglected to state that. God bless you anyway and have a great day! :)
