I bought the deal for $75.00 for 2 hours of work ( I purchased a total of four hours) after my husband and mother in law realized that installing the new doors was a much bigger task than they initially thought. Our house is old and as the house settled many of the door jambs have become warped and even slanted. Both of the gentlemen who came to work on the doors were very nice and professional. The doors required a lot of shaving, sanding and chiseling. Additionally, the door jambs needed to be adjusted. The work was done quickly and very efficiently and all of the doors were installed as promised. I am very pleased with the work done and I look forward to working with Gary's company again on future projects.

I had two other estimates for this work. (One was $300 higher, one was $200 lower.) I received a quicker reply to my calls and email from the other companies, but we had a better feeling about Gary (the owner of GC) after meeting him. Gary scheduled the work to begin about 10 days after the estimate, which was great especially considering it was already pre-holiday season. He and Jim (an experienced builder himself who works with Gary on jobs) did the work over three days. We are very happy with the results, which is the most important thing, but I can also say that Gary associates with good people and that also meant a lot to me. See separate review for the work that David (The Wall Doctor) did -- it was also great. As a bonus, I was working on other projects around the house on my own and Jim offered some invaluable advice that really helped me get my work done right.
Description of Work: Enclosed an interior staircase leading from the first to second floor. Built new free-standing handrails between the two flights of stairs and added new handrails to the walls. Various drywall finishing and repair (performed by The Wall Doctor; see review).

Gary has been a joy to work with. We are a little less than half way into the tasks I have him doing. Gary is very thorough in explaining what needs to be done and listens to what his customer wants. The work I need done is a little unconventional but I trust that he and his guys will work until it's perfect. Pricing is fair and I feel comfortable with him and his entire team.

This was a very challenging job for me to schedule and get completed, and so its a very challenging review to write. Before purchasing a "Big Deal", I contacted Gary, the carpenter, and he kindly reviewed several pictures that I sent him and talked with me about replacing one side of a broken, interior door frame. It was a better price for me to purchase a new door/frame, and have him install it, so I purchased two of the Big Deals (4 hrs total) as this was his estimate. We scheduled a date, but he didn't show and when I called him he had the wrong phone number for me. He explained he'd injured his back and would need to postpone so we decided we'd tentatively schedule for 2 weeks later (and I gave him the correct phone number). Two weeks later I contacted him by email and he explained his back injury was severe and he would need to postpone again. When we next emailed, he explained he required surgergy so he gave me an estimated "return to work date" and I agreed we would schedule at that time. I contacted him at the agreed time, and he said it would be a few more weeks. I contacted him by email again, and explained I would need to schedule immediately or make other arrangements. At this point Gary recommended a sub-contractor associate of his and said he'd call to schedule the work. Unfortunately, Gary gave him the wrong number (the original wrong number) and so it took a few more attempts to reach this person. When I finally did, he came out and looked at the job and said he could repair the broken frame and casing for less than the original quote and I could return the door and frame I had purchased, which would save me some money. The only date he could do the work was a date I already had a commitment, but I didn't want to wait any longer so he came to my home when I wasn't there (my son was). When I got home, the work looked very good to me, and I was very satisfied. My son said he was there about 2 1/2 hrs. I contacted Gary and told him I was happy with the work, and asked how/who was responsible for paying this other man, and asked what we would do about the 'additional work time' that I had purchased and was wanting to schedule. Gary said he'd take care of this person's charges (which he did, I presume) and that he'd contact me in 2 weeks (he gave a date) to schedule the remaining 1 hr (his words) of work he owed me. He also said he'd give me a discount for being so tolerant of his situation and patient with him. I never heard from Gary. Because I had had to be the one to contact Gary every time throughout this several month ordeal (he always responded promptly, but he had never been the one to reach out and contact me first) I simply tired of trying to make this work. I ended up paying for 4 hrs of work and receiving about 2 1/2 hrs., and it took me over 3 months beyond the originally scheduled date to get the work completed. I struggled with the grading system - Gary was always kind, professional and polite, and responded quickly as long as I was the one that contacted him about trying to schedule a work completion date. This last 'arrangement' however, was something he should have followed through with, especially as the work had been completed and I had been very patient. He did not, and I no longer wished to keep pursuing this. The subcontractor did a good job, but since this was not the company being rated, I chose to put N/A on the quality of work. I have purchased other "Big Deals" in the past, but will need to seriously evaluate whether or not I do so in the future. I paid 'up front' and had no recourse with either the service provider, nor it appears, with Angie's List. I had contacted Angie's List during the course of this process and asked for some kind of assistance - either in getting the work done or contacting the service provider - anything. I received no response at all to my inquiry/contact with Angie's List. UPDATE - 4/13. Gary contacted me after receiving the review, above, and offered to make up work from the original deal, and provide a discounted rate for any additional work I needed done. He set up a date to review the work and provide an estimate of work needed, time to complete, and additional costs. He came on time and went immediately to work and completed all of the work we agreed to. My impression, after meeting Gary, was that he is a very accomplished carpenter that can tackle most jobs and does a thorough job with his work. A couple of people had attempted to repair the stair bannister (described above) previously, and the work was either incomplete or didn't work or both. Gary completely disassembled, repaired and re-assembled the bannister and the work looks great. The other work was also done to my satisfaction. I changed my review grades because he was very prompt and professional in his dealings with me this time, I felt very comfortable with his assessment, and also both him and the work he did. I left the 'responsiveness' as a B only to reflect that I was extremely patient with his physical challenges (several months) originally, and wish he would have been proactive in contacting me when his situation resolved. He was, however, responsive and excellent to work with this time. His professionalism was very good, and his work was excellent. I would most certainly hire him again.
Description of Work: Re-built one side of an interior door frame that had been broken. Replaced/re-installed the inset for the door handle and replace on side on interior casing/trim. Done by a sub-contractor of this company. Original review completed in 12/12 from work done in 10/12. The update, below, from work done 4/13. Original purchase price of 'big deal' was about $130. The work described below included finishing work from 10/13 and additional work for an additional cost of $290.00. Additional work on 4/13: remove and replace exterior steel door, reinforce jamb on a different exterior steel door, quick reinforcement of a piece of molding and a cabinet door (one 'nail', one screw), and completely rebuild a stair bannister and newel to correct instability and separation of wood pieces.

Overall, I could not have asked for a better experience. We had a couple of workers prior to Gary coming on board that were not a part of Gary's team and Gary handled it like a pro and dealt with them at every level. Gary always provided me with options after showing me the various methods or techniques to complete an area. He always had his specialized workers contact me and discuss what I wanted or was looking for. Once I decided what I wanted, all I had to do was talk with Gary about it and he made sure everything was completed as I had desired. Once again, I will not trade Gary for anything. He is a no b.s. person. Gary has a keen eye for detail and if it is not right, believe me when I say he's not shy about getting it done his way. All I can say is I am thrilled with the job done. I will definitely be using him again. He is worth the wait. What I also loved about Gary is that when he first came he reviewed the work and there was no way to price it for overall because of all the little things that had to be completed from the original guy. So he made a simple plan with me about weekly payment based on hours he or others had worked and cost of materials. He held true to everything. Everything was well documented throughout the job. I appreciated Gary's attention to detail. I know he was very frustrated because of the delays with regards to his health, but when it came to his back, my concern was more for his health. He is a man of integrity and would get the job done as he had promised and he did. Now that we are at the finish line we've had people over and we actually spent our Thanksgiving in our new basement. We received rave reviews and our family even took pictures to share with others. You have to realize they typically don't care. This leaves a "wow" in everyone's eyes and I could not be more thrilled. Thank you Gary for having the integrity, character, and mostly using his talent to create an awesome space for not only my family, but others to enjoy! He knows how to pull it all together.
Description of Work: We had to have major waterproofing done in our basement, which due to the extensive work of that, we decided to convert our basement into a massive media room putting in a kitchen, finishing off a bathroom, and finishing a laundry room. It was a large job. With our entire basement waterproofed and everything pulled out from water damage, it was time to put it back in order and finish it. The first guy that started our basement took us for a lot of money. He got our framing 90% done and started the epoxy flooring. We had to hire someone to finish our epoxy floor and that was done with ease. Once we fired the original worker, I decided to come on Angie's List and do a hunt for a contractor. In fairness, I thought I just needed drywallers or a couple of cabinet makers, etc. Boy was I wrong. We got a lot of various answers from different contractors, but many did not want to touch our job or priced it so astronomical it wasn't worth it. Some contractors did not even have answers for us or said they would squeeze us in between other jobs. But my major obstacle was the kitchen. When I asked some about a design for the kitchen, no one impressed me. I did not want cookie cutter design. We needed a kitchen designed because of an area of the basement it was a bit of a spatial challenge. I had no ideas. All the contractors we called in wanted a deposit up front to even show me a kitchen design, but there was no guarantee if I would like the design and then what? To me the kitchen design was going to speak volumes of how the entire job was done. When Gary came in we talked about what I wanted, but where my stumbling spots were. I explained the kitchen. He said no problem, I've got a guy who works with me who will come out, measure and get you a design within a couple days. I asked about a deposit, he said none was needed. After we talked some more and I had shared what I had experienced thus far Gary simply said, "I'm going to show you how the old guys do it." Right then and there I knew I wanted Gary. Gary's cabinet guy came out, took all the measurements and came back a few days later with a design that blew me away. It was a done deal. We have run into some stumbling blocks because Gary had back issues that led to back surgery and he gave us another general contractor that he worked with for 20 years to step in while he was out for recovery. That's just part of the construction biz, but even though during that health time for Gary, he was on top of things every step of the way. He was/is incredible at communication and even though we got delayed and moved a little slower from our initial timeline (his back and surgery as the cause), we are now at the finish line and I am breathless at the result. He thought outside of the box with ideas. He took some of my custom ideas and tweaked them. He did not think typical and he did not create typical. We talked about the issues and how to rectify them. I could say no or yes and he met me every step of the way. He adapted quickly to my design ideas and he provided true professionals. I've been through several construction jobs and I will never use any one other than Gary. We had a wall of bookcases designed that Gary's electrician thought would look great with lighting throughout. We did it. Wow is it awesome! He built custom hidden storage that I required and he just blew me out of the water with how well it turned out. He met our limitations when it came to building around duct work, even though some upgrades were more expensive, he explained with what we were doing we would not regret it. He was right on the money. We wanted a dining table that was a high top island to seat at least 8 people. Gary designed it to match our wall of bookcases and worked with his furniture builder. It was beyond my expectations and gorgeous when the granite top was added to it. Because of the team that he brought together even our kitchen area now provided additional seating for 4 people which now made out basement comfortable for 16 people.

When we started this project two weeks into it I had a serious back injury. My injury put me flat on my back for 8 weeks. This customer was very understanding. While I know that everyone is not the same the world in general could take a lesson from the Customer about kindness and understanding, integrity. I called in some friends in the construction business who kept this project moving with quality and professionalism. until I got back on my feet. While some other projects might have been put on hold until I could give them their due attention injurys can really set you back. I am thankful that these folks were understanding and concerned with my health. It meant more than I could ever say.

The initial consultation determined how long the job would take and how much material would be required. The actual job took about 5 hours and he did a great job. I had only 2 minor complaints. 1) The length of time between the consultation and when they were able to come back and do the job. This was due to other work and they did keep me well informed. 2) After the original estimate, I procured material and it turned out not to be the right material so I had a large and expensive piece of wood which I could not return. The owner when he came for the estimate thought 3/4" plywood would be best and that he would remove the unfinished ends and replace them. the guy who did the work preferred to use 1/4" and just go over what was already there. I do very much like the finished project.
Description of Work: They rebuilt a pair of bookshelves. These bookshelves were built by us 10 or so years ago and were originally all one piece. when we moved, we split them into two bookshelves and it was that way for a long time. Finally, they are now rebuilt as separate shelves and the study looks finished. the project involved new trim (where the was no trim), new facing (where the bookshelves were joined together) and replacing trim where it was not long enough.

I contacted several companies for estimates. Some never called back and some didn't provide services for staircases. Gary called back the same day and was very polite on the phone. He requested pictures, scope of work, and my address in an email. He called back a couple days later to set up a free estimate. He was very knowledgeable and offered options for repairing or replacing. He also offered me advise my railings and spindles which I took on as a hobby project. The day of the job, the contractors (Jim and Jamie) showed uip on time, reviewed the job, walked me through what they were going to do, and answered all of my questions before getting started. When the job was done, Jim had me take several trips up on down the stairs to ensure I was happy with the job. Found a couple small squeaks which Jim fixed. I felt that the price was very fair for the amount of work done and I would definitely have this company back to do other work and will recommend them to friends and family.

We purchased the Big Deal coupons from GC Contracting on Angie's List for increments of two hours of general carpentry work, and sent Gary our information and a description of what we wanted. As noted in his ad, he was extremely busy, and it took a while for him to get to us, compounded by his back injury, which put him behind schedule. However, we could not be more pleased, both with Gary (who arrived on crutches to deliver the cedar boards and supervise the start of the job, and Rick, the trim carpenter, who actually did the work. I feel we got a lot of quality work done for the money spent. Rick was extremely meticulous in his carpentry, and cut each replacement board to fit precisely, with minimal damage to the existing deck boards. He also was very conscientious in his measurements to get the maximum number of cut boards from the allotted cedar we had purchased. We plan to have GC Contracting return next week to rebuild two sets of deck steps, and install hardwood flooring in our guest powder room, and perhaps a total bathroom remodel in the future. I highly recommend this company, Gary Croney and Rick to anyone who wants first-rate quality and professionalism in any carpentry or remodeling project.

Description of Work: Deck work - pulled out rotted pieces of wood and replaced with new wood. Put up siding that kept falling down.

We were not able to meet with the member due to scheduling conflicts, then I injured my back, We felt compelled to take off a dangerous and rotting decik for her. I send a new employee over the next day to remove deck and she paid him directly. While we usually do not do this the deck needed attention quickly and we were able to help. Thanks for your patience.

I purchased an online coupon through Angie's List to have some carpentry work done outside my home. The contractor promptly got in touch with me, and communicated closely with me through the whole project. I am very happy with the quality and promptness of the work, and would not hesitate to refer GC Contracting to others or use them again myself.

I had some shoe molding that needed to be reinstalled after having our hardwood floors refinished. It needed done in our kitchen, kitchen pantry, dining room, foyer, and hallway and I didn't have time to do it myself. GC Contracting had a coupon on Angie's List for two hours of carpentry work at $79, and I called them. I talked with Gary and explained what needed done. Gary returned all of my calls, usually within ten minutes. After I told him what needed done, he said he wouldn't need to come out and do an estimate because the job was pretty self-explanatory and probably wouldn't take long. We scheduled a time for him to come and do the job. He said the price on the coupon ought to cover the work. Prior to his arrival, I laid out the strips of molding where they needed to be installed so all Gary had to do was nail them to the baseboard. He arrived about ten minutes prior to the appointed time and got started. The whole job was done in about 75 minutes. Everything looked just the way it should and I was happy with the work. It looked like the molding had never come off in the first place. Since he still had 45 minutes left of the two-hour coupon price, Gary asked if there was anything else that needed done around the house. I couldn't come up with anything, so rather than just accept what I had already paid, Gary was honest enough to only charge me for his standard hourly rate of $55. So, I paid for two hours of work at $79, but since it only took him a little over an hour to complete the job, he only charged me for one hour of work, which was still less than what he could have charged. I thought this was not only honest but more than fair. Gary advised me to contact Angie's List to get a refund on the coupon, which I did with no problem at all. All in all, the whole thing couldn't have gone smoother. Gary was polite and professional and did exactly what he said he'd do, the only exception being that he did it in less time and for less money. We're thinking of having some work carpentry work done later this year, and GC Contracting will be the first place we call. We would definitely use them again.

I saw a coupon/special through Angie's List for 2 hours of carpentry work. Gary called and I described what I needed done (which was to replace the bottom board of the cabinet under my kitchen sink that was ruined after a plumbing leak). Gary then came out and determined what needed to be done to repair the cabinet and then he came out again with another carpenter, who actually did the work. He did an amazing, very detailed job. He somehow managed to install a floor board that fit snug around the plumbing pipes and in the end, it looked better than new. Not sure how he managed to make it all fit so well, but I am happy!

Gary is professional and courteous. When installing the molding, he recommended a different type of molding that looks so much better than the one I picked out. I am a very picky person and he exceeded my expectations. Will be contacting him in the near future for another project.
Description of Work: I have used GC Contracting Co LLC a couple of times. The first time to close the backs of my basement stairs and the second to cut and install molding in a half bath (with crooked walls) and caulk the bath tub in my full bath.

I did not have the time to tile the lavatory floor and I need the job done quickly. After contacting the company and providing details of the job, Gary came out promptly, reassessed the job, and went to work. The tiling job was completed within 2 days and it looks great. The only issue I had was a bit of clean up, but overall I'm happy with the project. Gary is a true professional and I will definitely contact him for future projects.
Description of Work: Tile a 4' x 5' lavatory floor with 12x12 tile.
