I provided a detailed review on Yelp before I found that I could post a review on the company website. 2nd time using the company and the owner Jim came out both times. In each instance, he found a solution to the problems that could have led to unneeded additional work and cost if he was not honest and professional. The first time was about 10 years ago when he came out and determined all that was needed was some Freon (it's an old unit). Added the Freon, checked out everything else, and only charged a nominal service fee plus the cost of the Freon (when it was about 1/3rd the cost of today). This time the fan motor failed and he gave instructions over the phone for me to test in order to determine what the problem was and how to keep the condensor cooled down so it would still blow cold air (the house was up to 89degrees while it was 94-96 outside. He calculated the cost for the repairs, but I opted instead to go with a new 5-ton unit to replace the 33-year old 4-ton unit I had. He stopped out, measured everything, came up with a full turn-key quote for replacing the coils, the unit, moving the electrical box to put it back to code, new hoses, pad, re-routing the plumbing on the pump used to carry the condensation away from the furnace, fabrication work on the furnace where the new coils would go. That number never changed. No new "discoveries" of additional unforeseen costs. Cleaned everything up afterward. Came out exactly at 8 am with his intern/apprentice and was done and out the driveway exactly at 1:30pm. The work done on the furnace to replace paneling to fit the new coils in looks like it came with the furnace. All clean looking and fits perfectly with the furnace and blower that sits right below it. Would use this company over and over and will recommend him to anyone looking for HVAC or electrical work. I think he has cut back on doing AC units and furnaces - just because of the physical labor involved with moving the units around, fabrication work, hauling units up and down stairs, etc. But, if you want it done right the first time - then this is who you should try to book for the job. You get the story straight from the beginning of what the problem is, what it will take to do the job right, how long until he can get it booked, and a quote that will be right on point and each component of the cost required. I suppose there are times when he runs into surprises when he gets into a job and finds a problem that was hidden behind panels, walls, or duct work - but I never had that issue.

My boiler was leaking at the pump it was replaced and my system was upgraded for a 10th of quotes by other companies. This is now the only person I will trust with my family’s heating, cooling and electrical needs.

Jim came out to repair my gas boiler. He was very knowledgeable and professional. He had my boiler repaired and working in a couple hours and was fair on the price. Will definitely hire him again.

My AC went out on the 4th of July and when I called Jim said he would be out first thing the next morning. He was earlier then he said he would be and was very efficient and through in checking my unit. The AC was fixed in no time. Jim was very professional and helpful. I would definitely use this company not only because he is local, but also because he was extremely friendly.

Owner responded quickly, came out within 24 hours, explained my options, and he made a recommendation. Seemed like a real nice guy, seemed honest, and he finished the job when he said he would.

Hired Performance for HVAC work. Have heat pumps (77) and Fluid Tower on building. Quarterly maintenance performed on every heat pump. Yearly maintenance completed on fluid tower. Tower is 34 years old. Jim's knowledge of the tower has saved our company money and time loss at work. Jim also does electrical work for our facility. Jim help us with LED lighting project at our facility. This has saved us money and Jim help us with rebates from DTE. Have an ongoing maintenance agreement with Performance Heating & Cooling. Would recommend commercial or residential.

Jim was great! Reached out quickly and was able to come out same day. The job ended up being relatively simple, but he was professional and personable thru the entire (albeit quick) process, and was modestly priced as well. Would definitely hire again.

Jim was a real lifesaver. A previous remodel contractor we hired dropped the ball and did a very poor job. Jim came in, inspected their work and explained what needed to be done to make it right. We scheduled a time and he performed the work with a very professional approach. In addition to the electrical work performed, we had him look over the furnace, and do an assessment and service on that as well. Overall VERY professional, I wish all contractors were like this. Jim, the owner, returned my call promptly and scheduled me for the next morning, a Saturday. Other places were quoting me 2 weeks out. He was very professional and got both of my boilers up and running in no time - saving me what I thought would have cost hundreds in replacement parts. He even took the time to teach me how to skim the older boiler and restart the newer one. Very friendly, informative, and professional - I highly recommend!

Jim squeezed me in last minute. Explained the job, tried to minimize damage to wall to move everything and helped me put it back together. I finished the drywall myself but that was my request to save money. Great compromise.

At first I thought I needed the motor replaced but Jim was able to get out there and determined it was just a bad capacitor saving me a couple hundred dollars. As it is a rental property, I was not there to see the final results, but I trust work was done to professional standards. Will hire again for future HVAC needs.

I first discovered Performance Heating & Cooling when I had an air conditioning issue in 2017. At that time, I immediately got onto Angie's List, and searched for a deal for air conditioning repair / maintenance. I'm so glad that Jim was offering a special deal, as that is how I became acquainted with his company. I LOVE to support mom n pop shops when you can trust that they won't try to take advantage, and that's what I feel I've found with this company! At that time, it was HOT. Late August, I believe, and the air conditioner just would not put out any cool air. Now, I have a LOT of issues with the house, as it is from the 1950's and work needs to be done. The furnace / A/C are probably 30+ years old, and I know they need to be replaced, but at the time there were other things that were more important. In the past, people would come in, look at the units and tell me how old they were and that they need to be replaced. I was expecting more of the same here. I was also expecting to have to wait to be seen. Thankfully, Jim was in the area that day, and came by after his work was complete. He visited late that day, probably wrapping up his day at 8PM. He did not charge extra for the hour, and was extremely helpful! He looked at our system, agreed that it was old, and told us the motor was shot. Then, instead of saying you need a new unit, he said "I can fix it!" How refreshing!! :) He gave us the option of getting an OEM motor, that would run us $500 or $600, or getting a different motor (1/4 horsepower, that was actually more powerful than the initial motor) for a fraction of the cost. The only problem would be that he would have to do some interesting things to install the cheaper motor; 4 bolts would be protruding through the top of the unit, and some wires would also be exposed at the top. He assured us that the unit would function as well, if not better than before it broke though, and that it would work wonderfully until we were in a better position to be able to replace everything. We agreed to go the cheaper route. Jim went down the street to The Home Depot, got the part and fixed our unit that day. It cost us just over $200, and had worked wonderfully up until this past week, when the fan blade actually shattered inside the unit. This happened on the evening of July 3rd, so nothing was open.....:( I was sure that was the end of my luck getting my unit fixed when I reached out once again to Jim. At the time, I had tried looking him up on Angie's List, where I found him in the first place, only his company is hard to find for some reason. Jim, I suggest you offer another special, as more people will find you that way!!! I know that if I hadn't known about you, I would never have used your company this second time around, as it just didn't pop up. However, I did know you were out there, and I dug out my prior receipt. With some patience, I was able to search your company out.... Anyway, as for this visit, I was sure he would be unable to assist me. My unit is SO old. However, to my surprise, he was again able to fix my unit! By the time I was able to track him down and contact him, all of the specialty part stores were closed for the weekend. He was very apologetic when he told me he wouldn't be able to help me right away, but I had been expecting that. He did, however, have me go to the unit and pull off the make / serial #. He took the information and told me he'd contact various part suppliers first thing Monday morning. He said he'd be in Troy on Monday, but would make sure to come out that day to fix my unit. By 8am on Monday, Jim was on the phone with me. He had already called 2 or 3 parts suppliers, and was able to find an OEM part for my unit! He picked it up, and arrived at my house before noon. He thought he'd be able to arrive by 10:30, but ended up running just a tad late. No worries! He arrived shortly thereafter, and was able to make short work of the repair. He cleaned the unit out while he was here, checked the furnace for good measure, and the unit runs as good as new! (Although I STILL plan to replace everything .... next year. ;) ) He's already seen the area, and says he can provide a 95% efficient furnace & a/c unit. It will require some extra work, as my older unit isn't installed the same way the new unit will need to be installed. He thinks, based on everything, he can do the job for $6,000 - $6,500 all in. And he also says that prices have been dropping, so it might even be a little cheaper.....I am confident he's giving me a great deal! As is, this past visit cost all of $212. And it was well worth it! Just by giving Jim the information on my unit over the phone, I saved $75, that they would have charged for coming to get that information and then going to get the part -- not to mention the time it would have taken away from getting the unit fixed! Most other companies just would have sent a truck, and addressed those issues once they arrived. I highly recommend this company

Service was excellent! Jim contacted me minutes after I requested a quote. He came out the next morning, which was on a Saturday, without charging an inflated weekend rate, like some companies do. He took time to adequately isolate the problem & make the necessary repairs. I am very pleased with the service that I received, and will definitely call them again.

During this last heatwave, without my A/C working, I was miserable. I called Performance Engineering Friday (after 5 nonetheless) and to my surprise, I actually talked to a person! Jim was incredibly helpful during our conversation; guiding me through basic troubleshooting (attempting to save me $$ by not requiring a home visit). Even though those steps didn't correct the issue, he was over bright and early today and had everyting resolved in less than an hour. Jim was punctual (called to let me know he was on his way), expertly knowledgeable, personable, and efficient. I would strongly recommend Performance Engineering to anyone needing assistance in the HVAC realm of their home. They are honest and reasonably priced. Plus, I have a comfortably cool home again! Jim was very helpful of asking questions about what problems I was having and what to do that might help and if that didnt work call him back ....so I called Jim back ..he came right over and fixed the problem quickly and a great price

I woke this Sunday morning with no heat in my house. With a 3 and a 2 year old, I was stressed and worried about what we were going to do, when we'd get heat again, how much of a premium I'd have to pay for a Sunday Emergency call, etc. I called Jim around 8:30 AM, he called me back within 15 minutes and was at my house within another 20 minutes. An hour later my heat was back on!! And he didn't charge a Sunday premium! I would definitely recommend Jim. He was a great professional to work with.

Jim Lee was amazing. He spent 20 minutes with me on the phone just troubleshooting. When we realized it would require a visit, he showed up less than an hour later. I was very impressed with him showing up on such short notice. He even took the time to teach me what was going on inside the furnace and how to prevent any further issues. He was in and out in less than 30 minutes on a Sunday and didn’t even charge me the higher Sunday rate. Highly recommended.

He did a great job helping to diagnose the problem. He also helped me troubleshoot an issue with my humidifier. I would definitely recommend them.

My Central AC Unit stopped working on (of course) one of the hottest days of the year. I worked with Jim at Performance Engineering who initially offered suggestions for a quick fix: i.e, checking the circuit breaker and wiring. After determining that these were not the cause of the system not working, he quickly diagnosed the problem as a burned out rotary cap and hard start kit. Replacement was quick and easy and he checked the freon level, noting that it was a little low. The AC Unit now works better than ever. I will definitely look to Performance Engineering if any future heating, cooling or electrical issues arise.

Jim was fantastic!!! I called three other people and explained what was going on and they were all receptionists telling me i couldn’t get someone out for two weeks. Called performance and Jim answered the phone and asked a few questions and diagnosed over the phone! Which he didn’t have to do and could have charged me for the service call like everyone else. He said it was likely a clogged pipe, talked me through locating everything with fantastic description, and coached me through the simple repair. I will definitely be calling Jim for all my future HVAC needs.

I woke up to no heat on a winter morning and called Performance Engineering. He was at Lowes on an off day and came over immediately to check the furnace. He was able to root cause the issue to the ignitor. Since it was an off day and he came immediately over from Lowes with no tools, he used my tools to complete the work which required a basic screw driver. The work was complete within an hour and heat was back on. The cost of the job was very reasonable and he deducted some labor cost since he used my tools to complete the work. Highly professional, courteous, and responsive. All of my future Heating and AC work will go to Performance Engineering.
