Occasional Twist

I have an antique teak table that was damaged in shipping. All of the trim was broken, and the surface was heavily scratched and marred. I was given a quote for replacement of the broken wood ($350 -- teak is not cheap!), and then given two options for the finish: a "refurb" at $175 (which I was told might not be enough to remove the worst of the gouges), and a "strip and refinish" at $350 (for a guaranteed "like new" finish, with all the gouges repaired.) My wife had said that she was afraid that the table would look "too good" after it was done, and she would be afraid to put anything on it (like being afraid to drive your new car for fear of getting that first dent!), so I opted for the "refurb" instead of the "strip and refinish." The repair and the refurb took three weeks, and I got the table back today. Let me tell you, if this was just a refurb, I can't imagine what they could have done with a strip and repair! The table looks brand new! It looks so good that my wife probably won't want to put anything on it for months!
