I was pleased that they installed the new roof in such adverse weather conditions. Even the color of the shingles was good, even though we never discussed it.

Overall the projects went well and we are pleased with how things look and seem to be functioning. As can happen in life there was some miscommunication, specifically regarding the gutters, but Montell Construction was great at working through that with us which speaks highly of them, I think. Our only criticism would be about cleanliness. The rooms that had access to the attic had a solid film of insulation over everything after that was installed and took some time to clean. We ended up cleaning a lot of roof debris that fell through a vent in our kitchen multiple time even after we made the crew aware of what was happening. We also spent an evening cleaning up our yard of roof debris about a week after the project. Granted most of it was smaller stuff but it was still somewhat disappointing. So criticism aside, every person I interacted with was very friendly and professional. They were extremely accommodating to our schedules when it came to meetings and were always available for communication. Pricing seemed very fair for the amount of things we had done. We are pleased with quality of the product used for the roof, research suggested it was good stuff. The house and garage look very nice. I would recommended them and would use them again.

Out of several estimates, the salesman gave us the best education on both product and application. We were impressed by the quality of the job and the professionalism of the workers. The time frame of the job more than exceeded our expectations, and we were very impressed by the overall communication. Even the clean up of the miscellaneous debris was outstanding. Overall we are very happy with the quality of the project, and it goes to show you get what you pay for! We would highly recommend anyone looking for these types of improvements to definitely contact Montell Construction.

The service provided by Montell was appalling. Upon signing our initial contract, we were given an estimated start date of 6-8 weeks, but probably sooner as our situation was considered "urgent". (Our roof was leaking into the room below.) No work began until the 12th week and the communication surrounding this was lacking. After the initial sales meeting, we later found out that we were not adequately presented with all of the product options available to us. It took weeks to even get a larger sample size of the product that was promised at our initial sales meeting. When workers finally showed up, they had different materials than outlined in our contract. Trying to discuss any issues with this company is beyond frustrating. We received rude responses, no apologies and the work that was done is unsatisfactory. The Duradek edge looked like it was cut by a child. Since it was already glued down, it could not be fixed so they painted to minimize the unsightliness of it. Sloppy if you ask me. A worker also stepped through the roof, causing 2 boards in our cedar ceiling below to break. They nailed it back up and offered us a few hundred dollars to account for it. At our final walkthrough, they fought with us over whether or not it was discussed to be $200 or $300 and also tried to argue that it could have been like that before they did the work. After all of the problems we had with them, I was astounded that they would try to haggle us for $100. In the end, they just wanted to take their check and never see us again. Good riddance Montell.

I was definitely impressed with the meticulous quality Montell pitched but the quote was more than double the cost of competitor's quotes. Unfortunately when deciding on a contractor I just couldn't see over $10,000 of additional quality being provided. I would also add for those people that are uncomfortable with pressure, Montell was the only company haggling with me at the appointment. "20% off if you sign now" was the way it went. Maybe we will use Montell for more specialized home work in the future. Thanks for the quote.

My 1940's home has a flat roof over part of the first floor. This "feature" was apparently intended to provide a second-storey balcony, with access via a door from one of the upstairs bedrooms. Needless to say, the builders who originally constructed all the homes in my neighborhood must not have been from Michigan. In the 14 years I have lived in this house, we have replaced the flat roof no less than three times due to water leaks brought on by snow, ice, and typical Michigan weather. After the latest leak, I decided to try and fix the situation once and for all by having an angled roof built up in place of the flat roof. After searching for a contractor, I selected Montell Construction based on Angie's List recommendations. After calling, I had a scheduled appointment with Chad McNew, one off the co-owners of Montell in fairly short order. Chad was very easy to work with, straightforward, and very helpful. In order to install the angled roof, we determined it would be necessary to remove the existing access door, building up the resulting hole with a stud wall and a window. I also added a number of other items to the list of tasks as indicated above. The biggest challenge with this project was that, as can be seen, it represented a number of semi-related tasks. Some of these tasks were completely independent, such as the install of the additional insulation. The remainder of the tasks had to be timed sequentially, and this is where the project stretched out. Because Montell relies on a number of different crews that each specialize in one area, those crews had to be scheduled separately, and, again, sequentially. So when weather caused a delay, it caused a stackup of scheduling issues. This situation was complicated by my family's vacation, work, and the need for some off the work to be done inside the house. This scheduling issue, which was circumstantial and largely beyond Montell's ability to control, was the only source of anxiety over the course of the project. Each of the crews that performed the work were professional, courteous, and more than helpful. When there was an apparent mis-communication regarding the gutter routing, the team listened to my concern, worked with me, and made the desired adjustments. While in a perfect world, the work would not have needed to stretch out as long as it did, I have been extremely satisfied with the work that was done. Everything was done with high-quality materials and to a high standard of workmanship. I would definitely use Montell again.

Great crew did very professional job & clean up. Only delays were weather related.

We have a new roof and new siding from Montell Construction, and we feel that we have had good work from a solid company and can recommend Montell to others. Some tips: first, try to remain at home when the work is being done so you know what?s really happening and can answer questions and discuss the process. Second, keep an eye on cleanup. The big stuff wasn?t a problem, but bits of old roof and tiny pieces of vinyl lurked in the flower beds and under the shrubs. Smudges and handprints could be seen on the vinyl when it was installed. Cleaning wasn?t done automatically, but once the company realized that it mattered to us, they took care of it. All along, communication with management was good, and the workers were prompt, pleasant, and hardworking. The house looks fresh again, and we?re pleased with Montell?s workmanship.

Price quoted was almost double what I received elsewhere and when I mentioned it was high, he slashed 20% off. Clearly the first price was trying to see how much money they could take me for. Very pushy sales guy, demanded I pay deposit and schedule the work the same day as the estimate or they would refuse to come back out. They may do fine work but I would never hire this company based off of my experience with the salesman.

They have not actually started the project yet but we have been happy with them so far. We received the quote within a week after they came out. They were really prompt and really polite. They had really good plans as far as what they are going to do with pictures and advice. They were just really extra helpful. We will be using them.

They did not cover the roof well enough and there was a storm which leaked into living room. They finished the roof and then fixed the ceiling as soon as they completed the roof. The clean up was awesome, and I appreciated that I was able to contact someone when there was an issue.

We?ve worked with Montell on several occasions. We hired them to insulate our attic, and to resurface our deck. More recently we hired Montell for a new roof. Each time we?ve been very satisfied with the work and had no regrets. In some posts, people mention that Montell estimates are on the high side, and to be honest that has been our experience as well. But, our impression is that Montell is very thorough during the estimate process, so their initial quoted price covers a lot more work/materials than what other companies include in their estimates. For example, one estimate we got was $1000 less than Montell?s, which makes it seem like Montell is more expensive. But, when we broke things down it became clear the lower estimate didn?t involve the same quality of materials and service. With the lower estimate the company planned on reusing much of the existing material, which didn?t seem wise given the condition of our roof. My guess is if we went with the cheaper estimate, once the work started the company would?ve inform us that most of the old material could not be salvaged and we would need to pay more for new material. Montell determined this type of thing upfront, so we weren?t hit with any ?hidden costs.? Given some peculiarities of our roof, Montell also devised a long-term solution to some leakage problems we were likely to face, so their estimate included additional materials and labor that the other estimates did not. We were glad we weren?t deterred by Montell?s higher estimate because the potential for hidden costs from other companies would have made the estimates equal in the end, and by going with Montell we feel we got a high-quality product and excellent service. Montell also works with a lender that offers a great financing plan, where loan payments don?t need to be made for a year and no interest is charged during that period. For big projects like our deck and roof, this financing plan was ideal because it afforded us time to save up more money so we did not feel so strapped for cash. We?ve been really pleased with Montell because they are a no-nonsense company that takes pride in the quality of their work. We feel Montell is genuinely interested in helping us feel happy with our home and they are willing to go out of their way to help us improve our house. For example, when they looked at our roof they noticed woodpecker holes along the side of our house. After the roof was done, they came back and fix the damage and plugged the holes for us. They also noticed some ice damage to our gutters from this winter, and they not only fixed and reattached the gutters, but they also added an additional drainage route to reduce back-ups and the formation of future ice. All of these tasks were included with the roof job, whereas if we went with a different company we would have had to call separate people for each of these tasks. Montell is a multi-faceted company, which makes them great to work with. When one of the owners, George McNew, came by for the roof estimate, he noticed the wood frame around one of our doors was rotten. He measured the door and told me exactly what type of door to purchase from Home Depot, and then Montell installed the door for us and only charged us for labor. When they put in the door they also reinforced the frame with a metal foundation so we don?t have to worry about rotting wood in the future. Montell has been great for us because they inspect our house and give us suggestions for how to maintain and improve it, and when any type of work needs to be done they offer to do it at a low cost if they are already at our house working on something else. For example, when they were up on our roof they noticed some issues with our chimney. We were aware of the issue but put the job off because we didn't want to deal with the hassle of getting estimates since we just went through that process with our roof. George said he had a chimney guy for us and offered to split the costs with us if we wanted to have the work done now. When Montell sees something that needs fixing, they want to fix it so homes are in good condition and homeowners are happy, and they want to keep employees working. They do not create unnecessary work just to charge homeowners though. On several occasions I actually asked George to replace some things on our house, and he actually declined and said that these fixes were unnecessary and were a waste of our money. Instead, he actually gave us suggestions for how to solve the problem ourselves, so we wouldn?t have to hire and pay someone else. We feel Montell is very willing to develop long-term relationships with people who want to invest in their homes, and they enjoy helping the community. We?ve been very satisfied with the quality of work they?ve consistently provided, we appreciate their professionalism and responsiveness, and their willingness to provide us with creative tips for how to maintain our home so we can save money in the long-run.

Randy, Jeff and their entire crew were super professional and punctual. Their work is outstanding! I am a firm believer in that you get what you pay for. You want cheap, you get cheap. Provider called me to schedule an estimate on my deck. After discussing the situation with what I need and that my deck is possibly an insurance claim, we both decided they were not a good fit for my deck. Very professional! She explained why they do not work with insurance claims. We both hope to work on a project for other areas of my home (siding, windows, etc) in the future.

I contacted them after reading an advertisement flyer to have them give me a quote. Their salesman came out and gave me a presentation of the company, showed me a survey of average roofing costs, measured my place and gave a quote 6 Xs what it cost me the last time I roofed this place, $2400. I was sticker shocked expecting to pay double or even triple what I had before. I told him I needed to sleep on it and shop around, but he became rather pushy. He insisted that he had driven a great distance to my place and was expected to return with signed papers He offered a small discount removing one of the services. I caved to his pressure and signed the contract. They delivered a large dumpster earlier that week. I was notified they would be arriving 1 of 3 days depending on weather. I was called the night before they arrived. They came at a reasonable time with a crew of at least 8. Despite threatening weather the roof was completed that day. I was quite impressed with their professionalism and quality of work. Except, it took them a week to remove the dumpster from my driveway. I've done more research that confirmed my reaction to their fees. Pondering this I realize that the survey I was shown must have been on a large regional scale that would scew prices higher than they are in this area. I was asked to fill out a survey for them where i reported my conclusions. I was rather surprised to get a call from the company chief who insisted they had not pressured me but that was in my head. The combination of their high prices and pressure tactics is why I will not return to them for any future business or refer them to anyone else.

They did nothing. I called to have my extra large deck replaced due to damage from last winter. They do not do insurance covered work. They were not interested at all because it was covered by insurance??

I am so pleased with the work done by Montell Construction at my house. I had a big project -- roof, deck and siding all needed replacement. They met with me intially and wereso helpful walking me through the decision making process. So many colors and styles to pick from! As with any project of this magnitude, there were some hiccups (mother nature always plays her hand here). The project manager was quick to return my phone calls/emails if I had concerns that needed to be addressed. They provided a 5-year warranty and six months later when I had an issue with the gutters, they were back at my house within a couple days after my call to address some nail pops. Then, about a year later, some trim on my porch was battered by my snow shovel and when I called to see what they could do, they came back and got it back in tip top shape. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend to my family and friends.

I love Montell Construction! They were the best contractors I've had work done by. I met the team at the home show in Grand Rapids this year, and they were able to set up an estimate that same week. One of the owners came out to my house and really took the time to go over all of my questions at the appointment. I appreciated not feeling like I was being pushed into a job. They were able to fit my roof into an already tight schedule. The roofing team that was amazing! They got the work done in 2 days, and the work was impeccable. They were fast, courteous, and did great clean-up when the work was done. I will definitely be hiring Montell again for all other projects that I can!

It seemed to me that they were just making up numbers on how much things would cost. It was odd to me that they would be able to give me an accurate quote without ever having to look up prices, considering all of the different aspects of my renovation. They just happen to know off the top of their head the price of filling in our lower level door with cement and a window, renting an excavator, fill dirt, adding a door and building an entire deck plus labor charges? They were very quick to offer 20% after we said no thank you, which just confirmed the fact that they had given us way to high of a quote in the first place and are just making numbers up as they go.

Update 3/20/2014-The owner called my phone wanting to know why I attacked them on Angie's list and offered money or a gift card for me to remove my review and I stated I didn't want money, I just wanted an estimate which they refused to provide. I have appointments with other contractors and will look elsewhere. The provider's response states that they have never met us however the owner met myself and my wife at the Grand Rapids Home Show where we let him know it would just be me at the estimate. I'm disappointed at these actions as their work looks good and previous reviews here show they have provided quality service.

I approached Montell Construction to give me a quote on my roof. They REFUSED to come to my home without both my husband and I present. I am well educated, do the research for all of our home improvement needs, want to be well informed, then I discuss the options available with my husband. We make a decision and contact the contractor when we are ready. We have our own business and give quotes to customers on a regular basis. Never as a condition for us to give a bid, would we require both spouses to be present during an estimate. Not the case with Montell. Their response...it's company policy, and we are way too busy to come out for quotes to have to go over information twice later if a spouse doesn't understand what we talked about. This is a huge red flag to a customer. After reading other reviews that the price is only good at the time of estimate, that's another warning of a high pressure sales technique. Be careful and be aware, this is not how a reputable business is run.

They were on time, told us when they were leaving and they made sure that the yard was cleaned up before they left for the day. They guys had to deal with a robins nest that had a baby robin in it ,right above the deck while they were building it . Sometimes the bird stuck out it's butt and let loose right on top of them while they worked. They made sure not to bother the nest while they did their job. They hosed the pile off when they were finished with the deck, looked GREAT. Cleaned up with little to no effort. They also made me a place to put my grill, so the squirrels that we have, could not get into the grill and build nests in it again. A HURRICANE could come and the box would still remain afterward. If they didn't like the way things looked, they started over until it was RIGHT. Very professional and courteous. They are a GREAT bunch of guys and we will do more business with them in the future..Montell went above my expectations on any job they did. When they put the windows in the porch, they made sure it looked new afterward. The trim was replaced with new because the old trim had dents in it. They replaced the kick boards because they found water damage to the boards when they took off the inside wall. Way beyond what I ever expected them to do.. If it was a problem, THEY fixed it.

ave shared that they uote to repair a leak around our fireplace chimney and around our dormers in the front of the house. Chad came out and after seeing the age and condition of the roof suggested a new one instead of repairs. We agreed and asked for a quote. He was very complimentary of our house and was very pleasant to work with. We received a quote much higher than we could afford and told him we needed another quote for comparison. He stated that he really wanted to do this particular job as it was not run of the mill and would be a showcase for their work. He lowered the price and we agreed to let them handle it. It was done very timely and professionally. Shortly after completing the work it rained. The same leak that was around our chimney was leaking again. We called and someone came out to make repairs quite quickly. It was fixed properly and has held up since. We previously had to go out a bedroom window and shovel the space between the dormers or it would build an ice dam and leak into the kitchen ceiling. We did this for a few years and had no further issues if snow was removed timely. We put heated cable out and it worked great with no shoveling the last year of the old roof. I was told the reason the roof leaked was improper installation of the ice water shield. A Montell employee told us the dormer situation was repaied and would not leak again. We purchased a "lifetime" warranty as well for using a high quality "system" of components and installation. The dormers leaked horribly last week. I called and expected someone to assess the damage and work toward the repairs. What I got was told that ice build up is my responsibility and the roof was installed to state standards-talk to my insurance company. The main reason we have that new roof was to repair the dormer leak . I was told a new high quality system fixed this problem. It was not fixed, it caused more water damage than the past ten years combined (because I didn't maintain it properly!) and I now have to pay a $1500 deductable for repairs on the interior. I was sold a solution to that exact problem and now I am being told it is my fault for not maintaining the roof! I would not have replaced the roof at that cost if I still had to shovel and maintain the roof. I was told it was repaied and it is not. They are not standing behind the work they performed and should have shared that it would leak again if not maintained-that was never discussed or implied.

They fit us in to an already tight schedule; other contractors were six either a good six weeks out or couldn't even get to us! Did exactly what they said they would, and clean up was immaculate. Thanks so much, Montell!

All went extremely well from the very beginning. From the initial consultation onward, everyone showed up on time. The construction crew chief always called ahead to say when they would arrive. In our case, they needed to tear off the old roof and install everything new. After the tear off, they stayed well after dark to finish the clean-up. I admire the dedication and perseverance of the work crew, who worked in snow and sub-zero temperatures. They had to time each stage of the work in between snow storms, and they succeeded. They finished on time, and did a great job. Everyone maintained a very professional demeanor, even under very harsh weather conditions. I strongly recommend them.
