About us

Inspired Green is a full-service home performance organization. Our mission is to help families improve their health, safety, comfort and finances through analysis and improvements. 85% of homes in the United States do not adequately control heat, air and moisture. A ‘poorly performing’ home can have a multitude of downstream consequences for your family including asthma and indoor air quality issues, rooms that are always too hot or too cold, unnecessarily high energy or maintenance costs, mold, carbon monoxide issues, etc. Inspired Green conducts consultations and comprehensive Home Performance Assessments to provide your family with prioritized recommendations, based in science. We install the improvements that best meet your goals and budget; we also connect you with and process any rebates and incentives available to you through state or utility programs.

Horrible. We set things up in May, it was August before they came out, and they sent an unprofessional crew with outdated equipment. The insulation chute came undone and we are still finding insulation in our garage. It was a mess. Also, the blower test out was worse after they performed the work. We got a notice from Consumers last week saying our energy use is high after having all this work done.
Description of Work: We hired them based on a recommendation from Consumers to increase energy efficiency in our home. The recommended insulation in attic, baffles and vent chutes in attic, properly vent bathrooms, insulate over recessed lights, top plate air seal, weatherstrip doors.

EVERYTHING WENT WELL, THEY WERE PUNCTUAL, FRIENDLY, DID A GREAT JOB!
Description of Work: PERFORMED NEGATIVE PRESSURE TEST ON HOME (ENERGY EFFICIENCY ), ALSO CHECKED FOR SUFFICIENT INSULATION IN ATTIC. MADE SUGGESTIONS ON WORK I COULD PERFORM MYSELF , ie, caullking around windows. THEY USED A THERMAL-SENSOR DEVICE TO SHOW WHERE AIR WAS LEAKING IN. SUGGESTED INSULATION, WHICH THEY DID, ALSO SEALED ATTIC ACCESS COVERS. APPLIED FOAM INSULATION AROUND LOWER LEVEL PERIMETER, ALSO INCLUDED, WAS FURNACE TUNEUP. RECEIVED REBATES FROM ENERGY COMPANIES.

What started out as a really good experience turned into a nightmare. My first contact with them was when they called about doing an energy audit--they were working with Consumers Energy. Their contact person was knowledgeable and friendly, did a good first walk-through at my house, and then brought in a home performance assessment.company that put together a very complete energy audit report. Based on all of this, I hired them to do much-needed insulation work. At this time I was also having my roof shingles replaced, and Inspired Green contacted the roofers to make sure they were putting in comprehensive venting, and then examined the roofers' work to make sure the venting was correct.. A real plus was that as Inspired Green was getting ready to install the kneewall insulation they discovered a lot of old knob-and-tube wiring that needed to be replaced, and since they hadn't caught it when they did the cost estimate, they brought in some top-notch electricians and picked up the considerably large cost for the work. So up until now my experience with Inspired Green was really excellent. The guy who installed the ventilation did an OK job--he had to reschedule the work a few times but it eventually got done, though he left a small mess of empty boxes and other trash around the house. He also cut a hole in my bedroom closet wall in the wrong place to put in the insulation. He stuck the plaster board back in place but never repaired the cuts. The roofing guys had put some very ugly vents in a very visible part of my roof, so I asked Inspired Green to replace them. This is where things fell apart. I made a down payment--and then the company virtually disappeared. They finally, after several months of emails and phone calls and trips to their office, took out the old vents, but the replacement vents were never installed. So I now have a non-vented kneewall. Also, they never did a second energy audit, which was part of what I paid for the insulation project. I also found out later they'd never contacted the City inspector to do a required review of the new wiring before the insulation was put in. Over several months I talked with various people at Inspired Green and emailed numerous times. I drove to their office and never was able to talk with anyone but their receptionist. I either heard nothing back from my emails and phone calls or got apologies for not getting the work done and promises they would finish it immediately. And then nothing would happen. I ended up taking them to small claims court, and they didn't bother showing up for the mediation session. The court ruled that they owe me a fair amount of money--we'll see if I ever get it. Short summary is that I will never hire them again for anything, and would strongly suggest that other potential customers be very, very cautions in deciding whether to use them..
Description of Work: They did two jobs for me--the first was installing insulation in attic, knee wall attics, and through the basement. They used foam, blown, and roll insulation in various locations. I also hired them to replace some ugly box vents on one side of my roof with less visible off-ridge vent.

Things started out well--they did a very comprehensive energy audit and based on the findings came up with a good over all work plan for installing insulation. The insulation eventually got done--and done well--but it took quite a while for it to be finished. As that was being completed they signed on to remove some existing roof ventilation and put in more energy efficient and attractive venting. This is where things went badly astray. Long story short, after months of emails and phone calls they started, but never finished, the venting work (this was a very small job!), and they never completed the second energy audit they were going to do after the insulation was installed. I ended up taking them to small claims court, but they never showed up for the hearing. Do not use them!
Description of Work: I hired Inspired Green for two jobs--first to add basement and attic insulation, and then to remove a few old roof vents and install more energy efficient venting.

Initial testing and estimates were done in timely manner. All work was performed satisfactorily and a concern about attic fan's operation was addressed promptly and to our satisfaction. Work resulted in receipt of tax credits for energy improvements, reduced utility costs, and more comfortable home. Improvements also helped with sale of our home a year later.
Description of Work: Addition of extra layers of insulation and temperature controlled exhaust fan in attic, caulking and weatherizing of all windows and doors, rim joist insulation in basement, insulation of pipes in basement, low flow shower heads and light bulbs as part of overall energy conservation retrofit. Results documented by blower door test and improvements were eligible for energy tax credits

The whole experience was great. Inspired Green was very professional in conducting and explaining the assessments. The workers who performed the repairs conducted themselves in a professional manner, arrived at the job on time and did a good job of cleaning up any work debris.
Description of Work: Inspired Green performed an initial energy assessment of the house, provided data and infrared pictures of areas where improvements could be made, performed the improvements that were agreed to, and then performed a final assessment to show the improvement. The following was done: perform a furnace tune-up, provide additional soffit vents for proper ventilation, added R-30 cellulose to the attic, insulated rim joists with closed cell foam, vented two bathroom fans, and provided additional soffit vent chutes.

[Note: this review is being written more than 3 years after the events as the request of Inspired Green. Recollection is aided by referring to documents, calendar notes, and e-mails from then.] What started with a simple door-to-door meeting with student intern handing out free CFL light bulbs and administering a quick questionnaire.led to a meeting with an Inspired Green (IG) sales consultant, a full energy audit, and much-needed upgrades to our home. IG personnel were professional, personable, and very patient with many questions and explanations, both while deciding what work was to be done, while on the job, and with follow up. The Energy Audit included a blower test to measure the air flow infiltration rate of the whole house, dozens of infrared camera images to pinpoint heat loss, and detailed measurements to form the basis of calculations of energy usage and potential savings. The primary update work was done in 4 days. The basement floor joists were sprayed with foam insulation to block infiltration. New aluminum covered ventilated soffits were installed all around the house. A roof ridge vent was installed. All existing roof vents were sealed or upgraded. About 12-inches of new blown in insulation was added to the attic raising it to R32. The workmanship was excellent, and the finished result was very professional. I work from home, so spent a lot of time observing and asking questions of the work crew. They were always forthcoming and helpful with explanations. A couple of follow up visits were required. Replacement of a facia board on the garage was overlooked, so a later visit was needed to finish that work. During the foam insulation installation in the basement two small spots were missed. After a couple of missed appointments, they eventually returned to fill in the small missed spots. Part of the cost was offset by rebates from the gas company. In January IG suggested, that a higher rebate could be received by having a furnace inspection and tune-up, so we agreed to that; they scheduled it with their sub-contractor, and it was done in February. Several months later (in August), a small area of the basement foam insulation was discovered to be deteriorated. This was at the spot where a change over between canisters of foam had occurred during installation. They returned and applied new foam to the area at no additional coat. Overall, we have been pleased with the work and the results. The original energy audit predicted a small annual savings of around $200, of which $11 was attributed to cooling. There has been a vast improvement in comfort, especially in the summer. Based on an analysis of our electric bills, we paid less in the summer of 2012 than 2011, even though it was a hotter summer, as defined by "cooling degree days". The adjusted cost was 23% less, for a savings of $58, about 5 times what was predicted! I did not do an analysis on heating costs, but suspect the savings might be similar or even greater. Inspired Green is a very thorough and professional company, focused on home energy improvement. We recommend them.
Description of Work: Based on contact from gas company Consumers Energy, Inspired Green did a comprehensive Energy Audit of our 1967 3-bedroom, ranch-style home in June, 2011. They presented a detailed (38-page) report in July, 2011, and we contracted them to install soffit and roof ridge ventilation and basement and attic insulation in September, 2011. The work was done over the course of a week in October, 2011. Some follow up work took place in November, 2011, and January and February, 2012. A repair of some of the basement foam insulation was made in August, 2012.

It was thrilling. I knew a whole lot more about home maintenance and energy conservation after than I did before. Plus now I'm a pretty good hand with a caulk gun. They educated me and then made everything happen. If I had had to hire individual contractors for each piece it never would have gotten done. And it all happened quickly and cleanly. Thrilling!
Description of Work: Evaluated the energy efficiency of my house first. Then taught me the skills to do what a homeowner can; blew in insulation; installed appropriate vents; sealed cracks in basement wall; swarmed my house like a pack of boy scouts and cheerfully fixed the problems?

Everyone from Inspired Green was very professional, prompt, respectful of my property, and did the work exactly as planned and contracted for. They arrived on time and finished on schedule. They cleaned up after their work was done and took care to protect my flooring. The work was done in January so it could have been messy going in and out of my house. All my questions were answered and I was kept informed of their progress. I really liked that they got here and worked until the work was done - it wasn't drawn out for a week or more. There was a lot of work to do and it was good to have Inspired Green be able to do all the work I wanted done. My house was inspected before I purchased it and I already knew what the problems were. Such as 6 inches of attic insulation instead of the recommended 18 inches; the bathroom fan vented directly into the attic instead of out through the roof; and there was no insulation at the sill line in the basement. When the Inspired Green employee came and inspected the house he identified every issue my inspector had noted; so I felt comfortable with the company. One side of the house did not have a gutter system and I wanted that done; I was happy that they were able to do that also. Since the work was completed the upstairs especially is nice and warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The basement is warmer also. In the two years since the work was completed, I have had no issues with any of the work Inspired Green performed. I would recommend the company to others.
Description of Work: Energy audit with infrared photographs and assorted thermal testing. Blew insulation into attic; extended bathroom fan to vent out through the roof; new roof vents; roof ridge vented; all windows caulked from the interior; insulation stripping applied to exterior doors and to base of doors; foam insulation applied to the sill line in the basement; new gutter to one side of house; gutter covers to new and all existing gutters [also they cleaned out the leaves that filled the gutters]. Follow-up energy audit inspection and findings submitted to Consumers Energy for energy conservation rebate.

If I were the devil in charge of h***, l would skewer these guys and roast them to eternity--over a low-flame fire that would cause excruciating pain without ending their ignoble lives. They claim that they have studied building science and have expert knowledge on how to make a home energy efficient. But on the contrary, they are high school drop-outs at best, who are motivated only by the prospect of making quick bucks from unsuspecting and naïve new home-owners. From my experience with them, they do so by manipulating and exploiting basic human traits like fear, curiosity, ignorance and carelessness. They will tell you lies right from the beginning when the first guy shows up saying that the energy assessment of your home does not cost you anything. If you agree, they will send you a second dude who will by default, either find mold problems in the attic or some serious energy efficiency issue in your home. We were new homeowners and when this second dude told us we had mold in our attic, it scared the h*** out of us. He told us that we had an insulation issue in the attic and that this was contributing to moisture retention, which then according to him, was responsible for the mold problem. He warned us that if remedial measures were not taken immediately, the mold might spread and it could cost us a fortune to get rid of it. The next step, according to this dude was to do a blower door test for $450. Another dude showed up for this test, fitted a big exhaust fan on our door, and then went around the house taking pictures with a regular digital and infrared cameras. Then about a week later, their staff called us to schedule an appointment to discuss the home efficiency issue with us. A time was set up, and another dude showed up with the results of this test. He gave us a folder of the results, with a personalized letter from his CEO in which the latter claimed the ?solid ethics, unparalleled quality, steadfast unity, and candid dialogue? of his company. This dude also showed the ?results of an independent survey of Inspired Green?s past customers,? and asked me to go through it. It was replete with praises of Inspired Green. And the result of the blower door test was a collection of comparative pictures that purportedly showed ?heat leak? areas. He told us that our attic and rim-joices needed more insulation, and that the soffit vents had to be enlarged. Then he asked for permission to go around the house and take some measurements. He went to the basement, flapped his retractable measuring scale a couple of times, pretended to have measured the spaces and checked things out, and then came up, and said that he needed to do some calculations. He then worked on his ipad for about 10 minutes and said that he was done with the calculations and was ready to tell us how much it would cost to fix our energy efficiency problem. He flipped his ipad towards us and bam! The figure was an astounding 8,989.00! Then I asked him if he could give us any discounts, and he said that he could negotiate with his company for a 5% discount and told us that we had 72 hours to respond to his proposal. I then asked where this 72 hour deadline came from and he was speechless! It was his way of saying ?I am in control here.? Then I asked him to give me in writing the details of the proposed work. He did not respond and said that their work would be of unparalleled quality and that we would be very happy once it was done. He further went on to say that if the mold spreads to the rest of the attic, it might cost us 60 grands. Then he went on to say that they had a relationship with us and that it would benefit us immensely if we went with his company, and that he could start work if we gave him a 50% advance. By this time, I knew that these guys were rip offs, would subcontract the work to someone else, and cut out a big fat for themselves. I bluntly told him that like the other previous dudes, our meeting with him was probably the first and last and that I would not make a decision until I get quotes from a couple of other companies. He was utterly displeased and left with a defeated expression. The very next day I contacted two companies, and asked if they could come over to my house, see what needed to be done, and give me a detailed description of the work and a quote. The first guy showed up the next day, and after three hours of climbing into to the attic, inspecting the entire house, and writing a detailed proposal on our dining table, gave us a quote of $3,000! There wasn?t any mold problem in the attic at all! The wretched souls of Inspired Green had made everything up and attempted to rip us off by instilling a sense of fear in the minds of new home-owners like us, and engineering a tactic that would motivate us to take uninformed decisions. Therefore, HOME-OWNERS, do some shopping around before you sign anything with these daylight robbers.
Description of Work: Step 1: Attached a leaflet on our door announcing that they worked with consumers energy and that were going around the neighborhood offering to do home energy efficiency audits. Step 2: Did a preliminary assessment of our home's energy efficiency Step 3: Did a blower door test Step 4: Discussed the results of the blower door test with us

The audit they did was fine. They did a very well job of explaining what they were doing. The only problem I had was with the contractor they had come do the work to better the efficiency of energy in my home. There is now a hole in my upstairs bathroom because of a leak. So I was happy with Inspired Green. The contractor who did the work was not good.

The first person who came provided an audit of our needs to reduce energy cost This included a test to see where heat was escaping the house. It was thorough and helpful in making the decision on what to do. The next team of workers came to remove mold in the basement and put a sealer on the walls to prevent further mold and moisture The next subcontractor came and placed blown insulation in the attic spaces including a space over an addition to the house that was only accessible by going through the roof, The final gentleman came back after the work was done an reassessed the effectiveness of the work. His measurement showed that our heat loss emissions should reduce by 19.9%. Overall all Inspired Green personnel and subcontractors were professional and accommodating. However there were differences of opinion on who the work to be done among the Inspired Green and the subcontractors on how the work was to be done. But as one subcontractor said I does not matter what the sales staff said, they have to do the work and knew the best approach to the projects. The subcontractors seemed to know the best approach. One of Inspired Green people told us that a dry basement system the we had install several years ago was a waste of money. The subcontractor who sealed up our basement walls praised the same system. The only thing outstanding is getting a eligible credit from Consumers Energy. The paper work was submitted by Inspired Green and hopefully we will be forthcoming. Hopefully actual reduction in energy loss of out 90 year house will show up in future bill. At this point were very satisfied with the actual work and helpfulness from all. llmoisture

I I guarded contact with Inspired Green, what a mistake. The auditor and then the salesperson came to our home and told us how much money we would save on heating and cooling costs by doing these things, we were also promised rebates from consumers energy. What they did not tell us was that our energy efficiency had to increase by a certain percent hat hey could not meet. We only received a quarter of the rebate we told we would receive. Also we had no energy savings compared to the previous year.

We did not have any services done nor did we have the audit done as I had signed up to do. I was initially contacted by a door to door salesperson. After hearing the pitch, I did sign up for the audit. The salesperson said that they are contracted by Consumers Energy (CE) because so many people are wanting an audit that they could not physically perform them all. On his clip board he also had a page with the authentic Consumers Energy logo. After the man left, I did some online research at Angie's list and called Consumers Energy. Consumers Energy had never heard of them nor would contract audits out and CE said that only people with CE identification would be representing Consumers. Any company that misleads the consumer needs a rating of 'F' from me. I cancelled the audit and after more research on the Better Business Bureau, in which they are no longer recommended by the BBB, I was prompted to write this review.

I am the point of contact for Inspired Green on Consumers Energy's website. http://www.consumersenergy.com/eeprograms/HPHome.aspx?id=4896 Please feel free to contact me personally if you have any other questions.
