We had used them before. They have always come and done a good job. They have done plumbing work and put a new sink in our kitchen. They have also installed new pipes in our basement. They called right when they came. We see a different plumber every time they come. We will use them again.
Description of Work: We got a quote from Mr Rooter to put in a new flusher thing in the toilet.

When I see Mr. Rooter commercials on TV now with the man winking at you, it has a whole new meaning to me now. To ease my concerns on September 19th, I called for a second opinion from the list of plumbers on Angie's List: I called Mango Plumbing. They gave me a price on the phone to view lines, $189.00. They came in the time frame they said. Mike said my lines were in pretty good shape. He showed me where the old line connected to a previous repair I had done several years ago. He said he couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't have problems in the future, but he found no signs that my drains were disintegrating. Mike said people don't realize they have a right to ask a plumber to leave. Just pay the service charge and ask him to leave. Even though I purchased a five year membership plan with Mr. Rooter, I will never do business with them again. Barbara Quinn
Description of Work: When I noticed black sludge around my basement drain, I remembered Mr. Rooter's commercial for a $99.00 drain clean out and gave them a call. It was 9 AM on the Friday before Labor Day. I asked the dispatcher if I could get someone that day. She said he was in the neighborhood and should be at my home that morning. A few minutes later a second girl called and said he was on the way. An hour later I called back to see if he had an accident when he pulled on the side of the house. It is now 10:00 AM. He checked my basement drain and main line, showed me what he said was calcium build-up on pipes. He said it would do no good to just snake line, it needed to be jetted. The cost $1,320.33. I asked him about their advertisement for a $99.00 drain clean-out. He said "OH thats out there", indicated outside. I asked him again "can't you just snake it." He said no. I asked him to write work proposal. He just wrote amount, no explanation of charges. I asked him to write what charges were fore. The cost of jetting line $859.23. The cost of a second man $172.10. The cost of a membership plan $289.00. I had to get a membership plan or the cost would be $1,600.00. He said I couldn't use "Yellow Pages" coupons since he was not charging me for a service call. After I signed the work order, he told me the equipment they used was very expensive and therefore locked-up back at the office and it would take an hour for the second man to bring it. I asked him would he leave and come back. He said no he would wait in his truck. It was two hours before the second man arrived, it is now 12:30. I'm standing at my kitchen window watching them eat pizza, laughing and talking. In the two hours I waited for second man, the first technician came into the house twice. First to get price book and invoices, said he was suppose to keep them with him. Said for that much money his boss would not take a personal check it had to be paid with a credit card. The second time, he said he had to get things ready for the job. They used walkie talkies to communicate. Too much pressure and the black sludge shot up on tech #1, my washer, the wall and the floor. They got a hose to wash it down drain. They used video camera to show me inside my pipes. Said my pipes were in bad shape and I should think about getting them replaced. Something moved inside pipe, second tech said see they are disintegrating. (It looked like paper to me) When I was skeptical, second tech said, "we work for a big company." I asked second tech if my pipes were fragile, could the hydrojetting harm my pipes further. They both said no it would not. They finally finished about 1:30. First tech said earlier that he would put treatment in drain at no charge to really clean out drain. I reminded him and he sent second tech back and he put Root-X in drain. (First tech told me earlier that I did not have any roots in my sewer line). First tech told me not to use drain for a couple of hours, and when I did not to do everything at once, dishwasher, flushing toilets, and to be careful what I put in my garbage disposal.

My appointment window was scheduled for 8-12 on a Thursday and by Friday at 12 noon they still had not yet shown up. I received many calls with apologies about delays, but after 4-5 such calls, I cancelled the job. I cannot speak to how skilled the technicians are, but their scheduling seems to be pretty horrible. I would recommend avoiding this company.

Well, the guy didn't show up for my first appointment, and then came in the afternoon when I called looking for him. He started off by scolding me for my clogged kitchen pipe smelling like "chemicals" but I was pretty sure it was a sewer gas/water sludge smell. After using a motorized auger to ream out my kitchen pipe, he claimed that the pipe was unclogged, and scolded me for "pouring grease down my drain" and clogging it up. I asked what product he could recommend to keep a drain free of grease and he said "there is no such thing". The entire visit lasted 10 mins and cost me $209! After he left, I was running the faucet to my sink and then noticed water had been leaking from my basement ceiling, under this sink. I called him back and he returned. He looked in an access panel and said, your pipes are rotten. I can fix it for an additional $300. We were running the water again to see where the leak was and when we looked out the window, we could see water pouring down like a huge waterfall out of an overhang on the outside wall of my house!! He left while I decided what to do next. I called his manager and they never called me back. Ended up paying for a builder to come open the wall and a different plumber to replace all the pipes affected. The initial pipe was never unclogged, btw. I would not recommend this company to anyone, and I will not ever call them back again.

The service was pretty expensive, but the equipment used was very advanced. I can't really knock them for that because they came out right away and fixed the problem.

A few years ago, I had good service done by this company. I called them because I had water backing up in my basement. The technician came out to provide me with estimates. He arrived late. Once he arrived, the problem wasn't that bad, but he ended up charging me the same price as if he needed to run a line in the basement to the main sewer outside to fix the issue. The tech. told me that they charge by the job. He didn't do the job he came out to do; the job that he came out to do was much larger than what was actually done, and he charged me what was quoted for the larger job. I called the company three times to inquire about this, and I spoke with the receptionist, who told me the manager would get back with me, but I never received a call back.

At first it was great, after about 6 months I noticed our basement would have minor flooding because the sump pump didn't kick on. Shifting the sump pump seemed to make it "kick in". Had to do that about 3-4 times after that and now it's 2 years later and the sump pump doesn't pump anymore. I'll try them out one more time right now but only because I don't know who else to call.
Description of Work: Our sump pump broke so they replaced the pipe that led to the outside and the sump pump.

The basement bathtub and toilet backed up again the very next time they were used after Mr. Rooter left - the same day. However, since the work was warranteed for six months, he came back the next day and flushed out the pipes again at no cost to us. When he left, all drains were running freely. But, as the previous day, the fix only lasted until the next time the shower was used in the basement bathroom. This time, we elected to call a different plumber - one recommended by a radio handyman program. This one worked on the problem for several hours until the basement drains were running freely. This time, the fix lasted and this company was the one who told us about the hydrojetting and how we were almost taken advantage of by Mr. Rooter. This is why we would not use Mr. Rooter again. The only reason we did the first time was because the backups occurred on Thanksgiving Day and Mr. Rooter advertised that they do not charge overtime for weekends or holidays and we were desperate.
Description of Work: Flushed out clogged basement drain and scoped sewer with videocam. When technician left, all drains were flowing freely. He told us that the basement bathroom had been put in improperly; that is no vent stacks had been installed by the original contractor and the waste line was unnecessarily long. He also told us that the line leading from the house to the main city sewer in the street was broken in several places and would have to be replaced. He said his company, "Mr. Rooter", could perform the work for around $5000. We later found out from a more reputable plumbing company that the line in question was, in fact, not broken and simply required cleaning by means of a process called "hydrojetting" which could be done at a cost of approximately $800.

The county had put a new sewer line in at the street and plugged our line with debris. Although MR. ROOTER was prompt he did not fix the problem. He quoted me a price of $339.80. He removed the toilet and attempted to snake the line out to the street but could not get it to work. He said the reason was his equipment was "new" and not flexible enough to get through the plumbing. He had no other options except to call someone with older equipment. Also when he removed the toilet he did so without draining the tank or removing the lid from the tank. Even I know that it is standard procedure to do those two things. I called ROOT-A-WAY and they solved the problem for $100.00.

Called to schedule my plumbing vent to be cleaned. After waiting for hours, the tech showed up without the proper tools? However, he was very professional. After discussing a new appointmnet., we rescheduled for this morning at 8AM. At 8:30 I called and was told the Techs don't start until 8AM and they were still waiting for them to call. I was then told they would call me as soon as they hear from the tech. Still no word. WHat a joke. How do companies like this stay in business? Obviously I will never use or recommend this company to anyone.

It took 9 hrs for them to get to my home. My basement was flooded and they said they would need to run a sewer snake which was $300. I gave them the go ahead to do so. They couldn't unplug my sewer. The only other option was to a hydro scrubber which was $1200. I found out later that I paid 2 times as much. The water was rising in my basement so let them do it anyway. I am very unhappy with this company!

The upstairs bathroom faucet was leaking (hot water). The technician came in and took care of the hot water tank first. Because of the brand of the faucet, the technician had to go to the hardware store twice to get a part. He said he was not in his truck and the truck he was using did not have the necessary part. He was very courteous and knowledgeable about his job.
Description of Work: Checked water heater and relit the pilot light. Fixed a hot water faucet in the bathroom. The price was a little high to me, but I needed that faucet fixed because it had been leaking for a long time. I used this company once before and was well satisfied with them.

Did not have satisfactory service from this company in the past, but this time they performed like professionals and did a great job. Rain on Saturday 9-13-2008 from Hurricane in Texas was so heavy even with pump running water started backing up in basement, but was able to control. Next day more heavy rain arrived and pump finally gave out and basement began to flood. Their technician arrived and saved the day when called and arrived in a timely manner even after emergency call late in the day on a Sunday. I had requested a technician who was good working with pumps and that I had not had good service in the past from un-knowledgeable workers from this company. This time they came through splendidly.

When originally called, the week before the appointment, I asked for an appointment as early as possible in the AM. I was told that I would be called on the appointment day by the technician, when available. They were told to call on a specific phone number (the home phone). They called that day on a number that had been seen on "caller ID." Which was a fax line. After calling them, I was told I had given them the wrong number. I was told I would be contacted by the technician when he became available. He called and stated he was en-route. He showed up over two hours later stating that he had gotten lost. The technician "Dave," looked at the counter, the faucets, the disposer and then asked if I had told them when I had called of all the things to be done? I stated yes, why? He stated that he had to make a phone call and would get back to me. He went out to his van. When he returned he said that he "could" do the job, but that he was not supposed to. He stated he was told to come out and swap-out a faucet. Not this much work. He stated that he worked on sewers, plugged drains, and digging in yards more than simple installations. That it was a union issue. And that he was somewhat of an organizer in these "issues." He said that I would be called shortly by another technician named "Ray." A person who had been around probably three times as long as himself. He was sure Ray could help me. Ray called a short time later and said that he was on his way. Leaving from the shop/office. Ray (#19) arrived in about an hour. It was about 2:00pm. He appraised job. It would cost me $343 for the single handle kitchen faucet. $181 for the insta-hot. And $124 for the single faucet (direct connection to well-water). A $47 service charge. For a total of $697. But seeing I had used their service before, it would only cost me $557 total. Noting the time of day, and looking at a $47 charge to say no, I agreed. Ray left three hours later. Job very well done. Although very expensive. Total "Rooter" supplies noticed as used, Three 1/2" pipe caps, one 6" piece of PVC, flux, putty and solder. I used "Mr Rooter" in March, at another house in Livonia. Then they were prompt and did good work. But even then technicians (Richard #16) was complaining of union issues and lack of pay. I should have seen the handwriting on the wall at that time. I will never again use or recommend "Mr Rooter." They need to get their personnel issues fixed.
Description of Work: "New kitchen counter-top and sink." - Mounting of two new faucets (one w/sprayer), and an "insta-hot" dispenser on new counter top. Re-mount garbage disposer. Sweating three 1/2" copper pipe caps in place. One new tee in line for insta-hot. Tighten faucets, re-attach water lines to faucets, hang disposer, test for leaks.

Their plumbers are always good, straight-forward, hard working, and honest. However, their dispatch system doesn't work. On three separate occasions, I scheduled work to be done. I took time from work to be at the house at the appointed time. After no-showing, I would call the dispatch and they would say the technician got delayed, or called back to a previous job, whatever. Never an apology for the inconvenience. Never a call saying the technician would be late, is that okay? Today I waited for one and a half hours, then rescheduled for the end of the day and asked that they call my cell phone, but again they were a no show and no call. The technicians are too busy, and the dispatchers are stretched too thin to have the time to make a courtesy call. I have tired of trying to give them more business, so if you don't have lots of extra time, I would suggest calling someone else. That's what I will do. Angie's List has lots of well regarded plumbers!
