+ 12 moreNick and Tom were awesome to work with. Honest, realistic, totally understood the right way to do accomplish some very difficult construction tasks. We had, historic review committee reviews, City of Detroit Inspections, and Sherwood Forest Association Reviews. The work performed was totally acceptable to all these oversight committees and inspectors. I never felt like I needed to research "how to" and teach United Building Service anything. The employees and subcontractors they used were friendly, timely, and hard working. UBS researched ways to help cut costs, and offered up alternatives for me to review (different stucco boards, second level truss system alternative, side entry door designs, brick choices, color keyed gutters vs custom painted, garage doors). I was never pressured to accept any of these alternatives, just presented with the choice, the cost difference, advantages / disadvantages, and they left me to make a decision. They warranty their work, and have come back to my home to do a few additional small projects. I wish I had discovered this contractor years ago. They made a very heartbreaking accident (tree falling), into a very positive outcome.
Description of Work: A FULLY MATURE Silver Maple Tree fell and crushed my detached garage. It also destroyed my roof, gutters, and some windows on a 94 year old home. Additional work done included interior painting, beam, kitchen cabinet / counter installation, insulation, & plaster repair, too.

+ 8 moreBased on their high rating on Angie's List, United was one of three contractors we requested a quote from. Within a couple of days Tom met us for a walk through. He offered sound advice on some of our ideas which was very helpful. We had his proposal a week after we gave them the architect's prints. The proposal was very detailed and specific. United responded quickly to our questions and made adjustments to their proposal as requested. We wanted to use some specific contractors to do the electrical and HVAC and United was very accommodating. (FYI, one of the other businesses we contacted for a quote did a walk through and never gave us a proposal, the job was too big for them. The other business gave us a proposal but it was vague and when we questioned them, we found that there were many things we needed that weren't included in the proposal.) We wanted to keep the original wood floors where possible and have them repaired adding new where required so that the entire main floor matched. They installed cabinets and appliances, tore out windows and rebricked the exterior. They totally remade the entire main floor. They estimated the job would take 4-5 months. Based on the experience of friends and family. we were expecting that it would take twice their estimate so we were ecstatic when they finished in just under 6 months. We recommend United to anyone we talk to that is looking for a contractor. You know that we love their work - we're now having them start on the basement!
Description of Work: In early 2016 we purchased a mid century "fixer upper" ranch. The entire house needed to be gutted down to the outside wall studs, including the basement. The entire first floor was remodeled.

+ 3 moreI could not ask for a more responsive, reliable contractor. The crew was prompt, professional and curious. They took as much time as needed to talk through what was needed and why, and completed the job with attention to detail. In the rare instance that we were not satisfied with the work of a subcontractor, UBS responded immediately to take a look and made sure that the problems were corrected promptly. They were extremely prompt on the phone and ensured a smooth process with insurance.
Description of Work: Fire/Smoke damage restoration. Required cleaning/painting all walls and ceilings, replacing all fixtures, replacing a kitchen and bath vanities, refinishing floors, etc.

+ 6 moreWe love the final results, it is like a new house with much lighter color and brighter feeling. The workers were polite and professional. George was so easy to work with. Anything I asked him to do, he or his workers got it done. The only glitch was the cabinet in the walk-in closet. There was a misunderstanding with Nick. So the cabinet he ordered were not I expected at all. It was a big disappointment because I was so looking forward to wider drawers to store our everyday clothes. With these small drawers, we cannot store much clothes in them. But all in all, they have done a great job!
Description of Work: United Building Service renovated our entire house except kitchen. The entire house was painted to a much lighter color, including moldings, and all the cabinet and closet doors. Carpet was replaced with new, lighter color too. All the bathroom counter tops were replaced with granite. All the lighting fixtures were replaced with new onces. The front door was replaced with a new one.

I told the guy I would need drywall instillation and 2 sills for the windows and he said that was too small of a job for them to even send someone out to give me a quote. It wasn't worth their time. I will definitely be calling someone else to do this project. And I would recommend anyone with any project steer clear of this company. I am very disappointed.

+ 11 moreThe UBS Holland family were great, as were all their crew. This entire project took about 15 work days even with our add-ons. They (anywhere from 2 to 5 guys, depending on tasks for the day) showed up promptly at 8:00 am every day and worked steadily until 4:00 pm or later. They were quiet, friendly and pleasant to have around and we were very impressed both with their work ethic and their multiple skills. (Some of the crew were also working on three insurance jobs in our neighborhood.) The quality of the work is excellent. I'm already making a list for 2016.
Description of Work: UBS rebuilt our upper and lower back porches, converting them from unused or summer-only into two new sunrooms and new access to our back yard. This involved demolishing the old aluminum windows and wood frames and cutting a new entrance door through brick. They then redid the framing, installed new double-glazed double-hung windows which they ordered from Kelly Windows in Detroit, installed a new entrance door (and a steel security door on the original entrance), and built an extensive new entry landing/porch to access the lower porch. They completely finished the exterior with Hardie board siding and metal trim to match our Andersen windows, finished the inside with beadboard and trim, installed new vinyl flooring, painted the interior and an adjoining bedroom on the second floor (after removing ancient carpet to expose a lovely wood floor). UBS also installed a new vinyl floor in our breakfast room and kitchen. They removed the old drop ceiling in the kitchen, installed new lighting, and installed an over-the-stove microwave, which involved cutting a vent through brick, moving a cabinet to make room, and coming up with a solution for the above-the-cabinets original plaster wall. That was per the contract. Estimator Tom Holland "got it" and gave us the most detailed estimate and best price of the three quotes I got. Once we discovered what a great problem solver Al Holland is (he was the working supervisor on our job), we added installing a new side-door entry step, repainting all the Tudor wood trim on the brick house, and refinishing the front door. Al was able to repair the 1938 original front door lock, which hadn't worked for 30 years and would have cost $300+ to replace if we could find a new lock to fit!

+ 2 moreThe estimate process was easy. They called and scheduled. I was not available for the first date, no problem they called back next week and scheduled. They sent two people to do the job. They did excellent prep, repair, and painting. The plaster work looked so good, I could not even see where they repaired it. They took extra time to make sure they got all damaged areas in the ceiling, even going farther out into the ceiling than I expected. It looked awesome. The bathroom work also looked great. They went to the store and matched my paint, and it looked beautiful. When I came home they explained everything to me, and were very friendly. I felt comfortable having them in my home. They were recommended to me by my plumber, who said they do a lot of follow up work for them. They were great, I would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Repaired water damage in my plaster ceiling and wall, installed an access panel for a bathroom tub and repaired drywall.

I had water damage in my basement due to a faulty icemaker line and decided to replace the carpet with vinyl tile. The estimate was fair and the installers started on time and had full run of the house for two days. Had it not been for the new floor, I would have never known they were there! Neat, clean and trustworthy. Well done. Highly recommend.

I believe he thought I wasn't serious about getting the repairs done, or that I didn't have the money to do the work. It really showed when I asked him to quote adding a basement bathroom, an he was very hesitant in doing so. I would never hire or recommend this company for anything. He was gravely mistaken and I went with another Home Improvement Company and spent $$$ getting things done with no attitude.

+ -1 moreI was very pleased with the quality of work of the sub-contactors and the oversight and attention to detail of the contractor United Building Services. I was very nervous about this arrangement, but went forward with the project based upon a very positive referral from a close friend. The whole project was exceptionally smooth, everything happened as the workers and contractors said with no surprises. All of the crews were very professional and efficient, and cleanup was very thorough. We are very pleased with our new roof and venting system, and the additional attic insulation has made a HUGE impact on our heating and cooling efficiency, especially our gas bill. The temperature in our second floor is now more consistent with the rest of the house. I would recommend this company to my friends and family, and I do plan to contact them again the future for additional work at our home.
Description of Work: Installed a new roof and attic insulation in our house. United Building Service contracted out the roofing and insulating to two different vendors. The roofing company installed new shingles and replaced many bad sheets of old plywood, and corrected the venting system of the attic, and corrected the venting system of two bathroom fans. The insulation company installed baffles and blown in insulation in all of our attic spaces.

This was a very small repair regarding loose downspouts but United treated us well by giving a prompt estimate and performing the work in a timely manner.

Description of Work: UBS removed a load bearing wall and installed a header beam in the ceiling that was unexposed. Additionally, they changed all of the plumbing from galvanized to Pex in the entire 1150 square foot home.

The price charged for the work to be done was fair, as was the amount required for a deposit. I didn't have to wait very long for the work to begin and the guys were in and out in less than three days. Professional, friendly, accommodating to minor requests, trustworthy, neat and clean. Nice work. Highly recommend!
