Carl returned my calls immediately, was prompt for our initial meetings, and kept me informed throughout the process. When additional materials needed to be purchased, he discussed this with me in advance and gave me my options. This was a professional and positive experience - plus the deck looks terrific.
Description of Work: Old deck boards removed and deck was re-constructed. Additions were made to the existing deck.

From bid to completion the project went well. It took some time to get quotes and scheduled in due to the spring season but once quoted, reviewed (and Karl was great to answer a lot of questions in detail), get in the schedule, materials and then complete the job. Karl and his team also did a great job with site cleaning - the left the area clean, swept and waste materials in a specific area.
Description of Work: We had a second story covered porche we wanted to have screened in and finished out from a trim perspective nicely. Karl came out and assessed the project, gave a quote, worked with me on price so I could do some of the work myself. He purchased the materials and finished the job EARLIER than promised as we had a summer party deadline. The finished product looks great and its solidly built. We also had a small problem with the wood species used which he took it upon himself to fix immediately and quickly - even after everything was paid for - most contractors I have dealt with say they will take care of it - but you never see them again really. Great Job Karl!

I called Carl to come out, review the situation, and provide an estimate. Carl was out the following Sunday afternoon (he does all his estimates on Sundays). He pointed out how the deck wasn't really sagging, but was in fact heaving up. Two of the supporting posts had been pushed up by two to three inches. Carl described what would probably be required to do the leveling of the deck and said he would call with a better estimate in a couple of days. He did, in fact, call back in two days to advise the repairs could run as high at $1,600.00 depending on the amount of time and material required. I told him to proceed as I knew from the reviews on Angie's List that I would get a quality job at a reasonable price, and I didn't want to abandon the deck that we have loved so much. Carl came out today with his assistant and proceeded with the repairs. They arrived precisely at 8:00 a.m., just as he said they would. It turned out the job wasn't as complicated as he had thought it might be. When we came home in mid-afternoon expecting to see workmen still there, they had already completed the job, cleaned up the place immaculately, did an extremely attractive job, and were gone. The total job took less than six hours and with time and materials (over $200 worth of new cedar lumber) the total cost came out to be only $585.00! All in all, hiring Carl was a tremendous experience and I would definitely do it again.
Description of Work: We have a seventeen-year-old cedar deck that is in good shape, except that it looked like it was starting to sag in a couple of areas which threw the steps down to the lawn totally out of kilter.

Carl constructed a 700 sq ft deck out of Trex transcend. He meet with me several times to finalize a design. He produced a very professonal drafted drawing of my deck. It was very exciting coming home from work to see the progress done. When it was complete I was very impressed.
Description of Work: Carl was very professional as well as his work. I was very impressed with the deck that was constructed and I am a perfectionist. He spent as much time as it took to get the design and drawing in my opinion perfect. All of his cuts were precise. My neighbors even complimented his work. I would highly recommend Carl and his crew for any carpentry work because they are so meticulous.

The work was completed as promised. Karl and his team were neat and respectful of my property. They showed up each day as planned and finished within the time frame that Karl estimated. After the project was completed, I noticed that there were issues with some of the deck material not being properly secured. I contacted Karl and he came out the house to address the issues quickly. Seems that this additional work did the trick. Karl again followed up with a phone call to be sure everything was OK. I would recommend Karl and his team for any project.
Description of Work: I had several companies quote on replacing the floor of my deck on the main floor and decking on a balcony on the second floor. The quotes were competitive and I met at length with each contractor. I chose Karl as he was professional, courteous, price competitive and highly rated on Angies List.

I found Carl on angie's list. I am glad I did. From the minute I met him, I could tell he was a stand up guy. I am a tough critic and he met my expectations every step of the way. Good price, no rip-off nonsense. Responsive to my calls. Start and completion date were exactly on. Deck looks great, it's exactly what we wanted and exactly what Carl and I agreed on. I'd hire him again, in a second. Conscientious, efficient, honest, does the work himself... What more could you ask for?

I was extremely happy with all aspects of the work that Carl and his team performed. From the start, he was willing to come to the house numerous times before we signed the contract to answer any questions we had. We had other quotes from contractors, but his was both competitive and seemed more comprehensive in the details he provided about the work to be completed. Once the work began, they were professional and knowledgable about all aspects of the job. They arrived the day they were supposed right on time, worked all day, and left each day after cleaning up the work area. During the project, small issues came up (The previous substructure was not bolted to the house causing moviement, there was improper drainage from the gutters causing some old posts to rot, etc.) Carl's experience was evident as he was able to approach each issue and suggest ideas to resolve with minimal cost impact on the project. Anything that I asked to have modified during the project was done by Carl with no complaints or issues. I would highly recommend Carl Zatsick for any carpentry work that you are considering. He is one of the few contractors that I have hired over the last 10 years who consistently EXCEEDED my expectations. I would hire him in a second when I decide to use additional carpentry services in the future. David Daugherty
Description of Work: I wanted to have an old cedar deck removed and replaced with a new deck made of AZEK, a resin deck board. My design was fairly involved, with a Chevron zig-zag appearance with numerous curved edges. I also wanted to preserve most of the current landscaping that was in close proximity. I contracted with Carl Zatsick carpentry to have the old deck torn out, the current substructure strengthened and then the new deck installed.

He was very quick to respond to my phone calls and did the job very efficiently. It was a great experience. The door frame is put together perfectly and is exactly what I wanted. I will be using Carl again in the future.
Description of Work: I had a set of french doors that were hung elsewhere in the house that I wanted relocated. Seeing as the frame couldn't be easily moved, I hired Carl to build a new frame install and trim down the doors.

The project went smoothly from start to finish. Although there were several rain days, Carl made sure his crew was there whenever they were able to work. I didn't see anyone, which I liked. They came after I went to work in the morning and left before I got home. I work long days so that didn't mean they weren't putting in their time....I just didn't see them. It went very well and I really appreciated Carl's checking in regularly with me. Most every day he stopped by to make sure I was satisfied. If something occurred to me that I wanted done, he made sure it happened. Good job, all around!
Description of Work: This is the second project of some size I have had Carl do and, once again I was very pleased with the work and the experience. I had a shed in my back yard whose sides had rotted away over the years. Carl took a look at it and suggested that part of the roof needed to be replaced, too, along with two broken windows. Rather than replace the windows he advised boarding the area up which would keep the shed more weather tight. I was very pleased when he replaced the door which was warped with a new door and hardware which was much more efficient and attractive. He also replaced the deck off the back of my house. I had been told by two others that the entire deck would have to be ripped out. Carl said he didn't think it would be necessary to take it all out but he wanted to wait and see what it looked like once he got the floor boards off. He showed me the supports and said he felt they were in good shape. So he just replaced the deck flooring and painted it. It looks great and he actually came in below estimate. The yard was fully cleaned up and debris was hauled away. I have more projects coming up next year and Carl will definitely be the one I call. I trust him and think he's a good, honest contractor...and sometimes it's hard to find both qualities in one person!

Everything about this experience was great from start to finish. I asked Carl Zatsick (and 3 other contractors from Angies List) to come out in March to give me an estimate for this project. All four estimates were within a few hundred dollars of each other - but based on the conversations we had, my wife and I both felt that Carl was the most capable and most trustworthy of them all. Carl took the time to meet me in person at one his recent completed jobs in Northville - to show me his work and give me some ideas on the exact design and layout for my deck. After that, we arranged a meeting at Northville Lumber to select the exact colors and styles for the Azek and Trex materials. I had never done a project like this before, and Carl was very helpful in describing the various options and features that can create a perfect customized deck for the house. Contruction work was started in the last week of April and everything was completed in about 1 week. One special item to note is that Carl and his crew cleaned up EVERYTHING after the job was completed leaving a backyard that is 100% clean and tidy now. In summary, Carl did the work exactly as promised, on time, and without causing any inconvenience for me, my wife, or our two small children. I have friends who have horror stories about the disruptions and messes caused by contractors and builders working in their homes. We had none of that. I would recommend that anyone who has a home improvement project call Carl and get an estimate. You will be pleased with the results.
Description of Work: I had Carl build a deck off of the back of my new house here in Novi. The deck surface area was 12' x 8' with a staircase coming down on one side to my backyard grass. I used Azek Decking materials for all surfaces and stairs, and Trex materials for the sides and handrails.

Unfortunately, Carl lost his post-hole digger and told us he would be unable to do the work. Even after doing so, he called back a few days later to inquire about our project, which told me that he cared about us and our deck.
Description of Work: We called Carl to take a look at our faulty deck and give us recommendations and a quote for fixing it. Carl did a thorough review and asked many questions. The type of questions, comments and suggestions made me very comfortable that Carl not only knew what he was doing but also that he cared about doing the job right. His quote wasn't the cheapest of all the ones we received but given the work he recommended it wasn't too far off.

In the summer of 2011 my wife and I determined our TREX deck needed work. We interviewed several carpenters including Carl
Description of Work: Member Comments: Not a bargain at any price In June, 2011 we conducted a search on Angie's List for a carpenter to redo our TREX deck. We contacted Zatsick Carpentry and Carl responded promptly to our request for a quote. He seemed friendly and knowledgeable about his trade and working with TREX. After interviewing three carpenters, we hired Mr. Zatsick. He completed the job in July, 2011 and we paid him in full. When the chilly autumn weather arrived many of the TREX boards' ends split apart. We showed this problem to Mr. Zatsick in January of 2012. We told him at the time we expected the boards to be replaced and would first pursue the issue with TREX. At that time Mr. Zatsick expressed willingness to have the problem resolved and asked us to let him know what TREX said. We soon submitted a warranty claim (which required extensive documentation, including photographs) with TREX for the split boards. TREX denied our claim because "it has been determined that your deck was not installed per TREX guidelines. TREX will not split if fasteners are started 1 1/4 inches from board edges and angled to the joist. One inch can be done but should be pre-drilled first". Photographs prove Mr. Zatsick placed our boards' fasteners 3/4 of an inch from the edges, clearly counter to TREX guidelines. Despite the evidence Mr. Zatsick denies responsibility for the improper installation, to the point of being hostile and profane. We have been attempting to resolve this issue with Mr. Zatsick in a civil manner for 9 months now and he continues to stonewall us and Angie's List.

Response from CARL ZATSICK CARPENTRY
As a small business owner the relationships I forge with my customers and the quality of work that I produce for them are extremely important to me. I treat everyone as I want to be treated and work very hard to make sure my customers are taken care of like family. The level of quality and care given to each and every job is reflected in the numerous reports my customers have entered into Angie's List. The current report is very upsetting to me and does not represent the whole story. Below, I have included the original report entered by this customer which conflicts with statements now made in this report. The bottom line is that I installed the material as requested by the customer and within the allowable limits of the manufacturer but have no control over how the product reacts to changes in weather or the manufacturers warranty. However, I have and will continue to work with the member to resolve the matter to the best of my ability. Original Report: "I found Carl on Angie's List. He responded promptly to my request for a quote on redo of our TREX deck. Based on his fair price and friendly knowledgeable, demeanor we hired him. Throughout the project Carl was courteous to my family, respectful of our property and approached his work very professionally. Importantly, he is an excellent carpenter. We will hire him again." Member Comments: "He got started when he promised and done as quickly as was possible. All in, working with Carl went very well."

Once Carl became available, weather permitting, finished the job on a timely manner. Carl took his time to research the manufacturer's installation recommendations, and performed his work flawlessly despite the sometimes harsh weather conditions.
Description of Work: - Demolition of the existing wood deck including debris removal. - Pouring concrete footings for new deck. - Building new deck made of DuraLife Siesta (formerly Correcdeck CX) composite decking. - Carl's price included all labor and material except the cost of the composite decking boards, and decking fasteners.

From the start Carl's work and professionalism left nothing to be desired. I appreciated his attention to detail and his willingness to do just about anything that was needed. His positive attitude is contagious; there wasn't anything that I threw at him that he wasn't willing to do. Carl is honest, his price is very fair and his work is excellent.
Description of Work: I was getting my house ready to sell and called Carl because I had been so pleased with his work building two decks onto my home last year. He remodeled/finished part of my basement, hung doors, fixed walls, repaired or finished work previously done by my son, put in shoe molding in the kitchen and living room, put in a new ceiling in the bathroom and many other little things.

We needed repair of the upper level of our deck which had become warped and had rotten wood in places. Once we made contact (having played phone tag) Carl came out to gave an estimate. He gave a number of options for material to be used. I was impressed that he was not looking to replace everything or maximize the amount of work. He indicated that the main structure of the deck was in good shape. The lower level deck was also in good shape and only needed some increased support underneath. In addition, he designed the upper level so that we made the most of the wood purchased, keeping the cost to a minimum. A detailed breakdown of the estimate was provided. Carl had planned to perform the work in the Spring. However, with the nice weather in January he offered to do it early. He came out as planned on a Monday and most of the work was completed in a week (he took a break for 2 days when we had some snow/rain). His work was an improvement on the original in that the railing was stronger and secure, meeting code. The new design has also been admired by many for its aesthetic qualities. The old wood was hauled away and he cleaned up well afterwards. He pointed out that the deck needs to be better secured to the house. Once Spring arrives he promised to be back to complete the work on this and finish improving the support for the lower deck. Throughout the process Carl has been very open and honest in his assessments and work. He is personable and responsive to the customer. His work is high quality and I would recommend him to others. I hope he is not too busy to come back and complete the work in the Spring.

Carl's attention to detail is impressive. He is dedicated to 100% customer satisfaction. He built the deck & screened enclosure exactly as planned. Carl loves his work & it shows in his craftsmanship and quality.
Description of Work: Carl removed an old wood deck from the back of our home and replaced it with an AZEK deck & a 14'x16' screened enclosure. He added custom woodworking details to the interior & exterior of the screened area. New seamless gutters were also installed. Carl's attention to detail, commitment to customer satisfaction, dependability, and honesty are the best we have ever experienced. Our finished screened in porch has exceeded our expectations. The project included demolition down to the frame of the deck (all the treated lumber held up great, it was the cedar that was in terrible shape), which went without a hitch. Karl gave us the option of disposing of the material ourselves, or having a dumpster in the driveway. We chose the dumpster as a marginal increased cost. Demo took perhaps a day and a half as he need to carefully preserve the existing frame. We had only one suprise on the demo, and Karl had me witness the removal of a window framing board, just to be extra cuatious. The material was delivered by Northville Lumber on time. Karl spent approximately the next week carefully rebuilding the deck. There were a couple of mid-stream changes, however Karl consulted us each time, with options. Today we have an Azek based deck that will never need sanded, never need stained. While I wish it were a project that improved (vs maintained) the house, I am please with the result. Karl performed all of the work that he said he would, in the time frame he committed to, and under (by a couple of hundred dollars) the budget we agreed to. Hard to do better than that.
Description of Work: We had a cedar deck, built in Octovber 1999 by Coy Construction, that was weathering badly. Several of the 4X4 handrail posts had rotted at the base. Some of the horizontal floor boards were failing as well. Note we invested many, many days over the years in keeping the wood properly sealed with Sikkens deck stain, but to no avail. I sanded the deck down twice to bare wood. What a pain. Karl came by, at the agreed upon time, and discussed our options. We were predisposed to non-wood products, having invested so much time an enegy previously. We liked his approach to buy from existing inventory as a way to save money. We worked with Northville Lumber to decide between Trex and the Azek product (we eventually chose Azek), and to piece together the material. Some time had passed between the quote, and our ability to pay for the work, so Karl had to come out a second time. Agian, no worries from Karl. We signed off on the quote, and within 10 days Karl began the work.

Description of Work: The first step of the staircase leading up to the porch of my house along with the newel posts were rotted very bad. Carl came out, removed the bad posts and boards and replaced them.
