21st Century Windows

The windows were installed in the middle of October, along with the door. However, the supplier only delivered 9 windows. The 10th window was ordered. The installation of the 9 windows went smoothly; three installers came on time, worked approximately 5 hours straight- without a break, and vacuumed up after the installation. All the aluminum siding around the front bay window was replaced so that it would match. The side door was replaced; some extra work was done so it would fit properly. Also, a piece of aluminum siding on my garage, which had fallen off previously ,was secured at my request. The owner kept me informed of the status of the 10th window, and it was installed at my convenience. My last payment was not required until the job was finished.

About two-and-a-half years ago, we bought a bungalow with a master bedroom on the second floor, which had been remodeled from a space that was previously an attic. Unfortunately, the remodeled second floor had woefully inadequate insulation and was so cold from New Year's through March that we slept downstairs on a futon during those months. 21st Century Roofing did very thorough work insulating the rafters and attic walls, adding high-density foam insulation in cavities around the second-floor windows, and caulking around windows on both floors, flashing, and gable vents. They inspected to ensure that our attic had the baffles needed to produce proper air flow and added baffles where required. They explained where our attic already had some insulation and made clear the multiple causes of the heat loss on our second floor. Besides installing the insulation, they addressed all of the other causes as well (e.g., areas that needed caulking and problems with vents previously installed). They also gave us helpful advice about roof and chimney repairs we'll need in future, the likely time frame for each, and do's and don'ts to make the repairs most effective. They answered all of our questions, before, during, and after the project. The entire crew was professional, polite, and very careful about protecting carpets, furniture, and the house generally. While installing insulation tends to produce a great deal of dust and dirt, this project left the second floor remarkably clean. The work on the insulation project took two days. But even after the first day, we were extremely impressed with the results. We were able to sleep upstairs on the night between Dec. 3 and Dec. 4 in far more comfort than we'd ever experienced on a winter night since buying the house. We've filed their business card and will definitely call them again. We've had far less positive experiences with other roofing companies, and we're delighted that we've found a company we can trust. We'll call them in future for any repair or remodeling work.

From the first conversation with Mark Teufel, (the owner), we were happy with the way he listened and offered possible solutions to our problems. When he came to the house for the inspection and to give an estimate, he was very professional, helpful and communicated very clearly to us the problems and how he would address them. If the initial experience we've had so far is any indication of the finished work, we will be very pleased indeed. I will write another report when the work has been completed.

Mark was very contientious and patient explaining the merits of two different brands of good quality windows and he gave us a very competitive bid. He had a very busy summer and there was some mis-communication on apointment times, but it all worked out. The crew was great and efficient. They were very accommodating and helpful and suggested a choice of cladding colors to blend with adjacent windows. Mark and the crew were willing to go the extra mile to assure a very good job.

Mark, the owner, seems like a really upstanding guy. I explained that I have tight budget constraints, and ultimately he saved me time and money by explaining what kinds of things I could do by myself and what other options I might have. This guy is very professional. The one issue is probably punctuality, but I kind of feel that allowances should be made for a small, local business (especially when it's just one guy). This guy may be too honest for his own good, but it's hard to complain about that as a consumer.

I called and set up a date and time for someone to come to my home to give me an estimate on replacing all the windows in my home (12). They were scheduled to be at my house at 12:00 Tuesday afternoon. They never showed up and didn't even have the courtesy to call and let me know. I finally called them 45 minutes later and was told by Mike that they were "too busy" with other jobs out in Shelby. Don't waste your time.

I contacted 3 companies who had received very good reviews (2 from Angie's List and 1 from another source). Of the 3, Mark was by far the most willing to be sure I understood the differences in windows. He spent a great deal of time exploring and comparing windows for me, providing quotes, changing and updating as needed. He also was very thorough and honest about how the windows would be installed-a critical piece to having a successful window project. Mark had to travel quite a distance to my location. He always called to keep me informed of his timing and scheduled arrival. I never felt pressured or rushed to make a decision or to choose his company. His crew was friendly and professional. I learned a great deal from his roofer, Brian, and feel confident in calling 21st Century when I need further roofing repairs completed, as well. Mark truly goes above and beyond to keep his customers satisfied. He will perform many "small jobs" which, in my case, have helped me tremendously. Currently, there are a few minor problems with the windows. Mark has already contacted JeldWen who will be sending out repair people within the next 2 weeks. It is good to know that Mark will remain my contact person in the event of any difficulties. It has been a pleasure working with Mark. He is knowledgeable, competent, honest and committed to his customers. He stands by his work and was on the job with his crew. I would highly recommend Mark and 21st Century Windows.

A very good experience, both with Mark and his polite, capable crew. I needed to get a house in move-in condition quickly for an elderly person, and they helped make it possible because they could do so much beyond the insulation job for which I originally contacted them. I was a little surprised at the final price--but I didn't ask for additional estimates along the way as we added items to the list (I'm sure Mark would have obliged had I asked), and when I think of all they did, I think I got a fair price for excellent work, and I'd rather have that than a cheap price for mediocre work. It took a few rounds of phone tag for us to make arrangements, but Mark did what it took to have the house ready in time, and I found him and his crew responsible and trustworthy. Their versatility saved me a lot of time, hassle, and phone calls when I was on a deadline. I will certainly call him in the future and recommend him to others, both for insulation work and for other things as well.

Mark was professional at all times, provided a very prompt quote for both jobs (which were entirely reasonable), and made himself available despite my limited times of availability to meet with him. Interested in completing the job the way I wanted it done and did a great job with both the roof and the bathroom!

I think they quoted us a price that was pretty cheap so I was a little suspicious. It was fine but we just had a funny feeling and didn?t completely trust them.

Marc did a great job installing the windows at a competitive price. He also threw in some other light roofing work and caulking for free. Highly recommend this contractor.

Great sales job, lousy follow through

They were conscientious in their estimates and were a fine company. They were prompt, professional, and courteous. We are having several things done outside of the estimate, so we chose to go with a company that could help with these as well. He was not as prompt as I had expected in providing the quote for the window work, but the discussions we had were good.

I contacted Mark based on his rating with Angie's list and I wasn't disappointed! Mark was very patient with us. We needed new windows but didn't exactly know what we wanted. We finally ended up with the Jeld Wen Wood windows with aluminum clad exterior. The windows are very nice. I'm currently in the middle of staining the wood trim and Mark continues to be helpful. Since I've never stained windows before, he explained what I needed to do and showed me how to get the windows in and out for staining. He's even loaned me some tools to use! Mark has made himself available on more then one occasion to help out when I have a problem or question about my staining capabilities. We also had a problem with icicles building up in certain areas of our roof. Mark had his guys go in the attic and identify some air flow problems. They made the necessary repairs to fix the problem by opening up a closed in area, added an exterior roof vent (can't remember the correct name), and made some existing vents a little bigger. They also found an area with some mold that they were able to treat. We have already ordered our next phase of windows! Mark is now going to replace 6 windows in our bay area and another front window. We are also having him replace the wood and stucco in the bay area with a concrete material that will be maintenance free. Mark has a good crew of workers. When the aluminum clad was being installed, his guy took a look at the color we picked and double checked to see if we really liked it. Actually, it wasn't quite right so he stopped and they were able to get a color that worked out much better! We should be getting our next set of windows in a few weeks and I look forward to posting another update! Thanks for the great job!

Mark was prompt for his appointment, explained our options clearly and arranged for the installation as promised. Chris, the installer, was professional and courteous and did a fine job.

The overall expereince of working with Mark and his crew was fantastic. Mark was so responsive to our family and the fact that we were on a time crunch to get into our new home...which meant insulation being put in the entire attick before we moved in! We were battling weather as it was December, but he rearranged his own schedule and his crew to be able to get this done for us. Mark went above and beyond the call of duty to help us! I would recommend him and his crew to anyone who would like excellence and honesty when it comes to work on their home. I am so appreciative, I really cannot say enough!

(12/30/2009) Over the course of three months Mark installed new windows-he did a fantastic job. In the future we plan to have him do several other major projects including a redoing two bathrooms and putting new shingles on our roof. UPDATE (04/11/2010) This is just an update on how the windows lated over the winter. I'm happy to report that they were fantastic! Mark shows a commitment to quality. He put in some foam insulation in the wall and that really helped keep the cold out. I highly recommend this company.

I called Mark Teufel at 21st Century Window Replacement Co. after another company failed to give us a price. He arrived exactly when he said he would. He showed us pictures of jobs he had done recently and gave us some references, which we visited. He gave us an estimate with a fair price (not the cheapest and not the highest) within the week and we decided to accept it. The work was scheduled and started the first day they could after the original promise date due to weather issues. Everything went very smoothly. They took extra care to clean up and to work around our needs. Mark likes to talk, but he is a very nice and honest man to deal with. Any issues that came up, including a couple of mistakes in ordering the proper window, he took care of immediately at no extra charge. He removed and re-hung all the window treatments at no extra cost. He also did a bunch of miscellaneous minor things for us around the house, again at no charge. I also ask him about an issue I was having with some ice buildup on my roof in a couple of spots. We talked about putting in some ice melting heating tape and again he said he would do it with no extra charge. We then discovered that the area under the roof where the buildup was, was not insulated properly. This was most likely the cause of the problem. He sprayed in foam insulation into those areas and so far we have not had any problems. Speaking of insulation, when he removed the old windows, there was practically no insulation around them. Mark insulated every opening when he replaced the window or doorwall. You don't find many like Mark. I highly recommend him.

I recently had windows and a doorwall installed by 21st Century and am very satisfied with them. Mark made sure everything was fine and came over to fine-tune the doorwall. He even spent extra time to fix the vertical blind mountings to fit over the new moldings. Mark cares that you are happy with the job and will respond to any concerns. He kept me posted on the status of the order and did his best to deliver a good product. Anyone getting new windows should be aware though that there will be work to do afterwards painting the new moldings which I had not realized. However, Mark offered to paint them for me, but I chose to do it myself. I am happy with the experience and commend Mark for making sure I was satisfied.

Mark is extremely responsive. He made it a point to stay in contact with us by phone or by stopping by to review the work of his crew. Mark's solutions were very creative and cost effective. Mark was here on a day that our air conditioner stopped working and he checked out the circuit box and helped us get it running again -- free of charge. I would recommend Mark highly for any kind of home repair / improvement work. He is a smart, kind man who is very customer-focused.

From the start, Mark was conscientious in his response to my calls. He returned all my calls promptly and was in communication with me regularly. If the weather forecast did not look good for optimal results, he called days ahead to inform me and set a time to reschedule. He followed through, and I felt that he was creative in trying to give me the best service and value he could, while being respectful of my budget.

About a week ago, Mark installed approx. 19 replacement windows. That job went really well (see review below.) We were totally blown away when Mark showed up and completed some work that a previous contractor had left incomplete (a front door replacement.) We were waiting for the other guy to show up, but it had been a couple weeks and we had no idea what to do. Mark created custom trim for the interior and installed a screen door that we had purchased for the original contractor, which also required some customization to make it fit properly. It was completed very quickly and works really well!

We received bids from 4 contractors for the same job. Mark's bid was competitive, not the lowest, not the highest. Mark was on-time for all of the appointments to discuss the project. We selected Mark because he was professional, enthusiastic and patient with us as we discussed ideas. He made a couple of suggestions that in the end enhanced the aesthetics of the final job. We also appreciated the fact that he would be on-site supervising the installation. We paid a third deposit and waited for our windows. Installation was put off longer than originally anticipated due primarily to the weather. Mark stayed in contact with us and let us know what was going on each stop of the way. Installation went smoothly. The crew cleaned up. Everything looks great and our house feels toasty!
