I was so impressed with how quickly and effortlessly they completed the job. They always showed up when they said they would and left the work area tidy between work times. I will use them again and again for all my update and remodel needs.

There are ongoing problems with our house build with Woodstone Builders since our last review submitted May 24, 2016. Therefore, we are sending an update. Our original excellent condition kitchen counter was water damaged because of improper installation. We insisted on a new counter. Mr. Collar and the plumbing company tried to dig out the kitchen cabinet again (knowing it wouldn't work because the damage was done, made a bigger mess and finally ordered a new counter. It came in 2 pieces, was of inferior quality and the wrong shape compared to our original counter. We rejected the counter again. Our builder had us deal directly with the plumbing company on this problem. (The counter looked like something one might see installed in an apartment complex.) We said we wanted to be involved in choosing a new counter according to the counter we originally had and wanted Top Shop in Lansing, MI to do the entire project, tear out and installation,. Mr. Collar finally agreed to that. The week we moved in (the first week in April 2015), the floating wood floor in hallway started to squeak. Instead of looking into the cause of the problem, Woodstone Builders pounded 3 face nails into the floor in hallway. It got much louder throughout the summer throughout every room. We got with the manufacturer of the floor who sent to us a rep. from MI Inspection Service. He did a 20 page report of all that's wrong with the floor installation, including pictures. Mr. Collar wanted to check the floor out for himself, but never followed through on making a specific appointment to do it. We still have our very squeaky floor, even more so in dry weather. We're still questioning where $10-12,000 went. We only got verbal answers that don't add up. We remembered that he did special beam trim at the end of build, which he called at the time, a "gift". Recently, we realized we ended up paying for that instead of him and contacted him. He said that it was an oversight on his part and sent us a check for that. Over a long period of time, there's been no harsh words exchanged with Mr. Collar. He comes across as a congenial guy who you enjoy talking with. But, he has proven time and again not to follow through on details. For example, he was not current on codes. Also, he didn't measure the trusses when they came, so the house was out in the open and unprotected for 2 weeks in the winter while waiting for the right size trusses to arrive. As the project went on, we were under the impression that he had never built a whole house, except maybe his own. I (Burrell) am visually impaired and we hired him to be my eyes, but his "40 years experience" turned out to be for his benefit. None of this is our fault and we're not happy reporting on someone's work, but when you join Angie's List, this is what's required to let the public know your story. He's no longer responding to our requests to take care of the floor. He said he'd never walked away from an unfinished project but he did this one. So far, this project is not being resolved.
Description of Work: Built a 1200 sq.foot home with full basement, with walkout, open porch on front, and open half porch in back. They did some of the work, but farmed out other work.

We sent a letter to Eric Collar, on Jan. 19, 2016 detailing the events of the last few months of the building process. Eric had hired 1 worker to do the plumbing, furnace and heat ducting. Eric forwarded our letter to the worker's company. Issues in this letter included the following: This worker and his helpers always used the front door of our house to get to their work area in the basement. They made so many trips with dirty shoes that the stairway was gouged to the point that it could no longer be stained. This worker demonstrated he had no respect for our property. Eric ignored it. We ordered 3 egress windows. 2 met code and 1 did not. We had been looking at a potential 4 bedroom house, but now it's 3. Eric said the window that had been cut to meet code had to have wood trim. We called the basement company recently and they said concrete trim could have been used. Mr. Collar seemed confused on codes when putting in the stairway. Originally, we had planned for 1 door at bottom of stairway. Once the stairs were in, there wasn't enough clearance between the bottom stair and outside wall. Eric realized his mistake and said he had to frame it in. We said, "OK" because we really had no other choice at that point. The problem worker gave us a 3" sewer pipe without giving us an option of a 4" pipe. He put the main sewer pipe in the wrong place, causing a 6"+ sized hole in basement wall. Eric said we would get a Tappan furnace (highly rated), but later the worker installed a Rheem furnace instead. We found out later it hadn't been registered and worker hadn't done it himself and didn't mention anything to us to do it, so we lost 5 years of our warranty on the furnace. Once he had furnace running, he had to order a part that was missing and let furnace run hard as a space heater for 2 weeks waiting for the part so he could get the heat ducting in, which may have taken years off lifetime of furnace. Eric did nothing about this. Worker put the register in the wrong place in kitchen after being told several times it needed to be moved. Eric did nothing about this. The worker's helper (a novice) installed the bathroom vanity, but damaged it in the process. The worker never checked his helper's work. Eric resurfaced the floor in it to cover up the water damage which we approved, but we still ended up paying for a new vanity. The worker's helper installed plumbing in the kitchen which looks like a big pile of spaghetti under the sink and the worker never checked his work and Eric Collar didn't do anything about it. The helper didn't use clamps to tighten front of sink which damaged the counter. A rep. of the worker's company came later to check the work and said it was done wrong and couldn't be dug out and fixed. We said we needed 3/4" spigots on outside of house. The worker put in 1/2" spigots, noticed that the pressure was weak, but didn't change the size. This is not adequate for our ongoing blueberry "U-Pick" summer business. We wanted a water heater with 40000 BTU. The worker assured us our water heater would have (his words) "every bit that BTU". He put in a 36000 BTU. At this point, we let it go, because it was hard enough to get along Eric's worker and we didn't want to make waves. As issues mounted during this project, we didn't even want to deal with the worker. We felt increasingly intimidated and didn't trust him. Eric Collar increasingly failed to support us in these conflicts. Mr. Collar wouldn't stand behind us. He always gave excuses for his workers and wanted us to fight our own battles. We don't know if the real problem worker intimidated Eric or Eric just didn't care. Eric did tell us that the worker no longer worked at that company, was let go. Lastly, we had over $16,000 of parts we already had before the project began which included, the well, septic system, kitchen cabinets and counter, 1 Andersen wall door, a bathroom vanity, water heater, light fixtures and mirrors. (The well and septic already here was approved to use on the new house by the county.) We didn't know where that money went. We saved all paper work. We are still waiting for the counter to be replaced with the same counter we had, painting, bathroom door leveled out, and porch boards need to be replaced from last summer. I would advise to use financing through a bank on this type of project and not doing it out of pocket. That was our mistake. A bank would have stopped the project when it started going wrong. Even if you have cash, use a bank anyway.

The plumber they hired did not check his helper's work, resulting in the bathroom vanity being damaged and kitchen sink not installed right which damaged the counter top. (We used the kitchen from our previous house because it was fairly new and in excellent shape.) The counter top was fixed, but the damage is noticeable and we're already thinking of having a new counter top. Also, we're not happy with the performance of the kitchen sink. They should have had a kitchen specialist put the kitchen in, not handymen. Also, they installed the blinds, but didn't shorten them. The builder should have communicated choices on materials before they installed them. Know who your builder uses to complete the work, because that's ultimately a reflection on the quality of the builder's project. We'd rehire our builder for certain jobs. (P.S.: We have a few months left on the warranty.)
Description of Work: The work that Eric and Stephan Collar of Woodstone Builders did was good but high priced. The project involved demolishing a house and wood basement and building a new 1200 sq. foot house with full cement basement..

Eric and Stephan met with us initially to examine the project and give us an estimate of cost and time. They were very friendly and professional and it was obvious that they had experience with this type of work. We were able to subtract some money from the original quote by doing some of the work ourselves.ie: removing trim and picking up supplies. They were able to schedule the work within a few weeks. The work took all day, from 10am to 7pm, since installation of french doors is tricky. It involved a lot of shimming and levelling. They did an excellent job and we are so glad that we used Woodstone Builders. We are confident that this door was installed properly. They worked cleanly and efficiently.

There was no follow through after the initial call. I was not able to get a quote, or a courtesy call to alert me that services would not be possible.
Description of Work: I forget if it was Eric or Stefon that I spoke with. But, one of them said they would get back to me in 2 days to have a plumber friend assist them with an estimate for the installation of a dish washer into a preexisting cabinet that was too small for the dishwasher. Needless to say I did not get contacted again.

Excellent from beginning to end. Eric and Stefan offered great ideas for getting the look we wanted at a reasonable price. Due to my husband's chemical sensitivities and allergies we needed special precautions taken all along the way which they and their subcontractors did. They brought joy with them every time they came. It was great to have them around.

The work was done very well and exactly how I wanted it done. Eric and his son Stefan are very nice and take time to explain everything to you. However it did take some time between original estimate and when work was actually done. Apparently there were some extenuating circumstances on the part of this contractor beyond his control so overall I was very satisfied.

They did an excellent job communicating and the finished product is very nice. On top of the great work they were also friendly, especially with kids which have a thousand questions. From start to finish it took about 2 1/2 weeks. The only thing in the finished room that isn't professional "grade A" work is the paint job, but that's because I decided to do the painting myself. Will definitely be the first call we make for any future work we get done.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of family room in basement. Included removing old ceiling, paneling and carpeting. Complete drywall, new electrical plugs, lights, and switches. Installed storage doors for under the stairs. Completed framing on the exterior concrete block walls and insulated the walls with plenty of insulation including a roll of insulation which was silver (not sure what they call it). Installed vinyl plank flooring. All new trim work around doors, baseboards, etc.

My husband and I first hired Eric seven years ago for a complete house renovation. He was recommended to us by my sister. He took full control of the project and did an excellent, professional job. Ever since then he is the first person we call if we have a problem. Eric is 100% trustworthy and always goes that extra mile. He does what he says he'll do and he really cares about the quality of his work. No matter how busy Eric is or how stressful the job is that he's doing he is always good natured and has a positive attitude. His quote may not be the cheapest you will get but his work is the best.

He supposed to come out and do some work for us but he never did anything yet. It took a long time after the miserable visit and gave us a quote on that. He came out a month and a half ago. I do not know their quality work yet but to complain my paying to get back with us in regards to everything. They are pretty much on time when they say will come out. They just come for a quote and there is nothing to do with any of their works or extra to do. But they seem professional.

I ended up doing most of the work and I couldn’t get through a sub contractor and they had given me an estimate on dong everything inclusive. I didn’t use them because I needed to work myself to save the money. I had a little issue with the price as it was a little high. He was slow in responding. He was slow to get the quote to me and at that time I wasn’t even there to receive it even so it was slow developing and it was slow getting it to me. My impression was pleasant.

After reading reviews on Angies List, I contacted 5 builders to interview for a small bathroom total remodel. All contacted me either the same day(sunday email sent out) or within a couple of days. An appoitment was scheduled with Eric from Woodstone for about a week out. On 1/24/13 he was suppose to show and meet with my husband. I returned from my appointment about 7:45 and asked how the interview went. Eric never showed or called. I called him and was told he got pulled away or another project and wanted to either still come out that night or reschedule. I declined. He eventually did apologize. I will not consider his company for future projects. It was just in such contrast to the courtesey and manners extened to us by the other builders. I dont know if something else was going on with Eric, but a simple call from him to adjust plans BEFORE, would have gone a long way into making me feel more comfortable. (You can never take back first impressions). We will be choosing from one of the other builders we have interviewed. The hard part is going to be who because they were all knowledgeable about their craft and cared about our project.

So sorry for this mixup...I had the appointment on my calendar & had looked at it that morning. The note said after 5:30...Due to an unexpected request for an urgent estimate on another job I went to that one as I was in the area and had finished my first job. I forgot to look at my calendar before agreeing to this special request. I simiply forgot about the later appointment after 5:30. When the customer called I offered to come out that evening or make another appointment. I apologized, however she was unwilling to try another time. I mostly am on the job and also make appointments throughout the day...mostly we are able to connect with our customers, however, sometimes they or we have to make adjustments to the agreement to accomodate each others circumstances. I have been making such appointments for 40 years and certainly know the importance of keeping our appointments. I have started using the reminder function on my cell phone to assist in this matter...had I done so on this occassion, the difficulty would have been avoided. Jobs are basic to our survival as a company, so we are very concerned about doing all we can to give customers a professional experience. Due to the demands of the day I simply forgot to look at the calendar. Not a lack of interest. Sorry for the oversight.

Woodstone set up a temporary sink and kitchen setup so that it wasn't so hard to be without. We are glad that they suggested that for us. The project went smooth. Anything that came up they talked to us about and set reasonable prices. We were so happy with the kitchen we have now, it's like night and day!
Description of Work: We had used Woodstone Builders to do work on our barn. We brought them back to remodel our kitchen on a 110 year old farm house. They gutted the existing kitchen out and replaced some water damaged sub floor. We picked out very nice cabinetry, that had plywood sides and was really built sturdy. Nothing in the place was square or level and Woodstone had to do a lot of custom work to make thing beautiful and they did, just amazing how well everything ties in together. My wife is very happy on how well everything flows now and how much more open it feels. We really enjoyed the craftsmanship that Woodstone put forth for our project.

Went great! Everything was talked over and expectations were let known right at the beginning, which I think is a big help. There was a lot of coordinating on this project with moving of the animals and so forth and that really made a big difference. I would recommend these honest hard working guys to anyone. It's hard to find good contractors and we were glad to meet up with them!
Description of Work: My barn roof was leaking from some of the high winds we get on the farm. We had Woodstone out for an estimate, which was competitive in price from other estimates I had gotten. The roof is a gambrel that is 50ft in the air and steep sides. They brought in all the right equipment to do the job right and safely. They took special care to work around our farm and horses. They replaced some of the boards that were rotten which really improved the structure of the building. We really enjoyed working with Eric and Stefan on this project and will have them do more projects for us!

Both times that we used WoodStone builders their bids, timing and professionalism were top drawer. We would recommend there company to any and all.
Description of Work: We have used WoodStone builders on 2 different times. in 1997 they put an addition on our home. They converted our garage into a family room with great windows and a corner gas fireplace. And then built a new garage onto the east side of our home making the entire home into a u shape. We were very happy and satisfied with the results. They were very good with working with us in changes that we made during the construction. They are hard workers and we never heard any profanity while on the job and they cleaned up everyday when finished with working. The total cost in 1997 for the conversion or our old garage and the new addition for a new garage was about $3500.00. We would highly recommend WoodStone builders to any and everyone. Once again we used WoodStone builders for a water damage project earlier this year. It involved removing windows and siding, damaged insolation and cleaning up all mold inside the the walls. They were able to salvage the window, but had to replace the moulding inside and out. They were open to adding a tall skinny window in the garage. They painted the entire family room, walls and ceiling. Again, we would recommend to all that WoodStone builders should be considered for any inside or outside building. The total cost for the water damage was about $2500.

I called on Wednesday and needed to complete some items by Monday for an inspection. Woodstone made arrangements to get a crew to my house on Friday afternoon. They arrived and reviewed the job, asked what I needed them to do, then they went to town. After each task was completed they asked me to review it and make sure it was what I wanted and needed. Then they went to the next task. Everytime I gave them a job it was completed just so.
Description of Work: We are renovating a 100 year old farmhouse and needed some assistance framing some complicated walls, doors and custom areas. Woodstone Builders had told me several times that if I needed help on anything to give them a call. Sure enough they came when called. I was able to give them a list of items I needed framed: laundry shut, a plumbing soffit, and a custom doorwall for a bathroom. I also had them hang some drywall on several areas. I was very impressed at the effectiveness with which they worked. I would recomend them to anyone. I have used Woodstone in the past for larger projects and they were great, now I know that they truley will do whatever it takes.
