They were able to squeeze us in as we were in kind of a crunch to get the apartment ready to rent. He had it completed in 2 days and it looks fabulous. Very detailed oriented.

It went fine. They were very timely and professional. The work was great.

The service went well. We ended up having them do work so we paid more. We saved some money on the labor cost with the big deal. We are considering calling them back for some more work we need done in the future.

I had previously hired another contractor from Anglie's List to do this work and also repair some grout in a 1/2 bath. That contractor's work was very poor and the caulk in the main bathroom did not hold and had to be redone. McDowell's cleaned up the mess from the previous contractor's work and repaired the caulk. He was very concerned that I was happy with the job because he knew I had a bad experience with the previous contractor. He called me a few days later to make sure all was well. He was very courteous.

Jim was a miracle worker! We had attempted to do our first ever kitchen backsplash and unfortunately it just didn't work out well. Jim made some recommendations keeping in mind my budget. He was attentive to what results I would like to achieve, short of removing the tile and redoing the job. I appreciated his willingness to keep me happy, both aesthetically and economically. He was very conscientious about keeping the rest of the house clean by setting up a "plastic room" so the rest of the house wouldn't be affected. I surely would not hesitate recommending him or using him for future projects. Thanks so very much for a job well done!

Two people, efficient service

Jim could teach other service people the fine art of great customer service. He and his son were always punctual, they told you what needed to be done, gave us updates on the work situation and cleaned up . We are very pleased with the work and have recommended Jim to all our friends. If I had not seen the coupon on Angie's List, I would have never found his business.

The initial estimate was quite a bit higher than I expected but Jim & his (son?) worked hard to keep the cost down. The final cost was several hundred less than the initial estimate. Jim said he likes to give the worst case scenario so there are no surprises at the end which I can appreciate. They did a very good job at removing stubborn iron stains from the tile, removed old grout and caulk then re-grouted & caulked around the tub. The end result was very good considering the age of the tile. I should be able to get several more years out of it. He also did a nice job of cleaning up & giving me advise on how to keep the tile looking nice. The "Big Deal" coupon that I purchased really wasn't a very big deal. It only saved me about $10 :-(

Jim and his crew did a beautiful job. It cost more than I had expected, but that's because it was much more complicated of a job than I had realized. The basket weave of the tile was very intricate and it had to be pieced in precisely. It took about I've had visitors comment on what a beautiful job they did. They put in more than 55 man-hours to complete the job. They were always there when they said they would be, were very nice and respectful, and always did a very nice job of cleaning up when they were done. I could send a picture of the tile work if anyone was interested in seeing it. I would strongly recommend McDowell Tiling to anyone, including my family.

Took a lot longer than I thought but the final product was great.

Jim was very prompt in calling back and scheduling an estimate. Total job was more expensive than originally estimated because I added in the cleaning and sealing of the tile on the dining room and kitchen (not originally planned). He was very careful to make sure that the work he was doing didn't disrupt the rest of the house by putting a tarp up and sealing off the work area from the rest of the house. When the job ran a little longer, he came back on a Saturday morning to finish some stuff up. I would definitely recommend Jim to anyone that wants any tile work done. While the price was a bit higher than what another general contractor had quoted me, it was well worth it and will be keeping Jim's phone number in case we have any other tile work that needs to be done. Jim does a great job that everyone is sure to notice - everyone that has come to our house since the new back splash was installed comments on how awesome it is.

There were no troubles with scheduling. The work was completed in about six hours. I did pay for some additional work beyond the cost of the deal. They did a very good job with the work and there were no problems.

I purchased a big deal with McDowell's Tile He was really nice, came out on time, gave me an estimate the next day when I emailed him. Unfortunately he was not able to perform the job (20 ST of tiles application only) for less than $1,200.00! He knew I had a coupon. I suggest you request a written estimate on the spot so you aren't surprised by the price. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: ANGIES LIST staff were very nice on the phone and have already refunded the cost of the coupon to my credit card, thank you. After I reviewed as above, I was called by Mr McDowell, who repeatedly said he was sorry but complained about my review of his price (1200.00). It was for labor only. I had a coupon for 4 hours for 219.00. He said it would take a full day and then back to grout. That means about max of six more hours than the 4 hours on the coupon. Apparently, the charge is 150.00 per hour for the additional time. Ive hired a company who is reputable and 20 years experience, the estimated cost is $485.00. He said it would take about 4 hours, then back to gout which "wouldn't take long". Lowes said 350-450 without actually coming out to see it. I will post a review on the company I hired when the work is done.

We regret we didn't have this done earlier.

I accidentally purchased this Big Deal from a provider who does not service my state. He was very prompt in calling me to inform of that. He was also very professional while phone. I have contacted Angie's List in order to get a refund of the purchase.

Just a one day delay. Jim and one helper came out, laid out runners to keep the floors clean, Asked if setting up the tile saw on front porch would be a problem before doing it. Jim was courteous, informative on what he was going to do and efficient. Completed job that day in about 4 hours.

He did a very good job but it took me a while to get him scheduled. I had him do more work than what was in that. It's longer. I need him done than what's going to be done in 2 hours. He's work was pretty good and I haven't appreciated it at that time. I appreciated the discount so it's a good deal. When he said a date, he was here.

I took advantage of a 'deal' purchased in July 2013 to have the tile work in my shower assessed and fixed. The work was scheduled for November. Jim McDowell arrived on time, assessed a few cracked tiles in the shower floor to see if they were leaking underneath and should be replaced. Even though they were not leading, I wanted them replaced. I wanted to keep the repair costs as low as possible, so Jim helped me by using some leftover tiles I had as efficiently as possible and having me go out to purchase the right materials (e.g., colored grout and caulk) )instead of paying him extra for his time to do that. He fixed all the tiles and redid the caulking in a few hours, and the shower floor looks like new.

At first McDowell's Tile didn't get in touch with me, that was June or July and so I finally cancelled the service. Then the day I cancelled, one of my tenants called and complained about the tile work and in their hub so I called the guy right back and I said "hey, you got any time?" He showed up and the next day he did it. It's just beautiful work that he does so then I hired him to do three other bathroom.

He was very professional and explained everything before any work was done. The finished product was just great and has held up well as the work was done over 6 months ago. I would use him again in a minute.

I was so impressed at the quality of his work...that I had Jim do 3 more bathrooms.....one at Applegate,and three rentals in Okemos, Lansing, and East Lansing. He transformed the tile from old to brand new as if it had just been installed....Will use him for other projects in the future.

It went very slow, weather was a factor. Finished job looks great.

|Mr. McDowell contacted us before the start of the project and asked for dimensions and pictures of openings to the room so that he understood the floor plan and room to room height variations. He recommended the approach outlined above, indicating it would provide the best quality and durability. Extremely well organized and dedicated to details. Easy to work with, would explain options and check in with home owner to discuss status and agree on plan going forward. Weather conditions made travel difficult, but Jim arrived daily after a 1 hour drive, undaunted and in good spirits. Got right to work and stayed busy until work was completed. Extremely pleased with the result and the particular attention he paid to spacing and leveling all the tiles. Would seek him out if we had additional tile work. | |Only suggestion I'd make is that he reduce the depth of the separators or allow the homeowner to remove after +/- 4 hours so that it would be less effort to remove the following day. | |
