Dexter Builders

This TINY project has been an awful experience. They sold us on their knowledge of building locally, doing significant renovations, and using a project management portal so you always know the status. From where I am sitting, none of what they said appears to be true. They have struggled to find the right contacts to complete the work that they scoped, and seem to give up before they have even started accepting the slightest resistance from zoning or others as the rule rather that leaning in with curiosity to learn more and help me get my job done. I have to continuously follow-up with them to get any information. They are not forthcoming about anything going on, the dog has constantly eaten their homework, and are an unsettling combination of unaware and unaccountable. This is poor and potentially dangerous for home construction.

Dexter Builders are absolutely wonderful! Every project we have them do they always exceed our expectations. Great communication from start to finish. Honest up front pricing and quality work. Look no further for any project. You have found the best!

It was great. They did excellent work. Everyone I met was very helpful and professional. I received immediate answers to any questions I had. The project was completed on time and on budget. They left the house spotless.

HORRIBLE! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! My husband and I asked for a bid on residential new construction several months ago. I took in construction prints and met with rep (Paul Lopez). After a month we were told (via email) the bid was almost done then never heard back. Calls and emails went un-answered. When I finally got the rep on the phone, he sounded annoyed we still wanted our bid. Then he sent a "price" via email with NO actual bid or break down. When we still wanted to see the bid another email was sent advising the "new" price was now 150k more (than the already 635k for a 2000 sq foot ranch!!). The final "bid", via one line email (for a 2000 sq foot ranch, new construction - mid level finishes) was over 780k. That's over $350 a square foot. Unreal. And they were unwilling to give an ACTUAL WRITTEN BID! When asked to see the bid and what cost that much we never heard back from rep (Paul Lopez). How can we even try to make adjustments to the plans if we don't know what the cost breakdown is? Makes no sense. And we had bids from other builders who managed to put numbers on paper! I called and spoke with an office assistant (didn't catch her name or title) who spoke with one of the owners. She called me back and said "bids take a lot of work" (isn't that part of your job??!!) and sometimes they want to make sure the clients budget can afford it (or something to that effect). Are you kidding me?! If YOU don't want to do YOUR job as a construction company and give a bid then be a man about it and TELL PEOPLE that UPFRONT, BEFORE wasting THEIR time coming in and talking to you. We couldn't get anything on paper. The customer service was horrible. I am appalled at this company and will NEVER consider them for anything. I feel like Paul Lopez shouldn't waste people's time if he is going to make judgement of them up front then tell people you don't want bothered before even meeting people. I've never had such unprofessional, rude, and off putting experience before with any company. What made you, Paul Lopez, decide others deserved an actual bid, but we did not??!! DESPICABLE. I will tell everyone I know, including friends, family and coworkers never to consider your "company". Maybe this is just how things are done in the construction realm, but from a large, local building company who touts themselves as having this great reputation this is unacceptable. I see reading these reviews we are not the only ones to get this treatment. Sounds like they are in the habit of "picking and choosing" who they think deserves a bid. "You're wasting my time" is exactly how I feel..... So, you can rest assured I will make sure I pass this message along to everyone I can!

Had Paul Lopez over to measure and get a quote. Never received it. Called back once and they said they were "just waiting for the quote on windows" and we would be receiving the quote. Never happened. Ended up going with another roofing company, just got it completed and are now getting our windows in this coming month, again, by another company. This is actually the second time we have contacted them to get a quote and the second time we never received it. When we first bought the house 2 years ago, we knew we needed a roof and asked for a quote planning on doing the project within this 2 year period and they never got back to us then. We tried again because we thought it would be nice to get all the projects knocked out by one company and we had seen work they had done after the tornado and it looked nice, but after our experience, they just don't seem very professional or organized and I would not recommend nor use them in the future.

These people were extremely professional. They recommended different options for fixing the problem including outlining the most economical fix. They arrived on time to do the work, were efficient, cleaned up after themselves, and were a pleasure to work with. Excellent company!

I was very disappointed that it turned out the way it did. I was looking forward to working with Dexter Block. I see their trucks in my neighborhood , read the reviews thought it would be a good thing.

The work was excellent, there were some issues with scheduling and communication.

Rachel was friendly and showed up at the expected time for the quote and returned the quote very quickly. I was very happy with that part of the experience. Our situation was a little unique in that I have already purchased my bathroom cabinets for the remodel and would be purchasing my own fixtures (due to employee discounts). In addition, to save on cost I would be doing all of my own drywall work as well as removing the existing cabinetry, toilet, and flooring. We also did not need a new toilet as we just purchased all new toilets a couple of years ago. Admittedly I expected some elevated cost due to changing from laminate flooring to tile and also tiling the tub surround but when I received the quote I was pretty shocked. The quote was nearly $9,500 and only $1,900 was product. The labor costs felt very inflated to me considering the amount of work I was doing myself as well as the very small size of my bathroom. After obtaining additional quotes, my feelings were validated. I have no sour feelings toward Dexter Builders, I think maybe they just didn't really want/need my business. Below is the quote for an understanding of how much I was doing myself to save cost as well as the tasks that equate to around $7,500 in labor costs. -Install protective floor covering from entry of house to working area? -All plumbing and electrical work performed by licensed contractors? -Owner to remove toilet, vanity, countertop, faucet, recessed medicine cabinet, and flooring before starting on site? -Remove and dispose of existing tub, tub surround, shower mixer valve, and vanity light? -Install a new shower mixer valve (owner to purchase and have on site)? -Install new bath tub ($550 allowance)? -Install a cement board on shower walls and ceiling? -Install cement board on bathroom floor? -Install floor, wall, base, and ceiling tile in tub area; grout and seal ($1,200 allowance on materials)? -Owner to patch any drywall as needed and paint? -Install owner supplied vanity? -Owner to have countertop installed by others? -Install cabinet over toilet and mirror/ cabinet (owner has on site)? -Install new vanity light ($150 allowance)? -Clean up jobsite and haul away debris

The project went exactly as planned, on schedule, very professional, and excellent work. I was very pleased with every aspect of their service, responsiveness, and quality. I will be using Dexter Builders for my next project.

Rachel was extremely professional, returned my request for a quote Immediately. She scheduled a time to view the bathroom and provide an estimate and showed up Right on Time. She provided me an estimate very quickly. The company seems very professional and I don't know the quality of the work. My review is only my personal belief on their pricing based on what other contractors are quoting for the job. According to their own quote $14,000 was going to the "Allowances" , but the total quote was 34,000$ so I assume that means there is $20,000 in labor. Which seems to assumes 200 hours at 100$ an hour.

Went great. 3 different trades scheduled back to back. Everyone showed up and had the job completed in 4 days straight.

We had initial problem when delivered products for roof were not the higher quality ones we had spec'd . Owner said office error, then did deliver the material as ordered. Excessive amount of materials left over, which we had to dispose of. Had another contractor go on roof to check, found flashing problems and a couple areas that needed to be redone. Dan was responsive and two men were here and worked to repair to our satisfaction. Clean up did not go well, we still have nails around house one yr later. Owner did come back to pick up nails, but our drives, walks and grass were covered in hundreds of nails......flat tires for us and our grass mowing service. But the good news is that we have no leaks, and it looks really good.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR REVIEWS, PLEASE LOOK AT DEXTER ROOF AND SIDING. I am submitting this review under the Dexter Builders name because Dexter Roof and Siding is owned by Dexter Builders. Dexter Roof and Siding completed my job and I would recommend them to friends and family. What you get: A good quality roof for less money What you don't get: A slick salesman who tries to pressure you I obtained 6 bids for my roofing job and Dexter Building company had the lowest bid by far. I estimate that I saved $5-$15K vs. the other bids for what seemed to be the same roof. I was hesitant to hire Dexter Building Company at first because their bid was so much lower than the others and I actually joined Angie's list just to read other reviews. The job took longer than they estimated (6 days vs. 3 days) and it was messier than I anticipated (all roofing jobs are hard to live through I hear!). In the end, Dan Schmidt came by and I expressed all my concerns. He was very responsive and sent a crew out to complete the work to my satisfaction, which including replacement of the chimney flashing and addition of vents. As of now, I am very happy with the finished job and I would recommend them and hire them again. This is my very first Angie's List review, so I hope I have the ability to update this review if any issues with the roof occur. Dan has assured me that there is a guarantee so not to worry. There were no hidden charges, no up selling and no bids with 4 options (standard, premium, super awesome, etc.) . Not only was Dexter Roofing's bid less than all the others, but it also included additional vents and extending and connecting the downspouts (per my request). A gutter company came out to finish the downspout portion. Dan Schmidt was the only salesperson who actually got up on my roof and inspected it prior to bidding. He clearly has roofing experience.

The whole process went very smoothly. Completed in just three days, and with the welcome addition of a water hammer arrestor. Rachel kept us updated every day, and she was available to answer our questions. The project couldn't have gone better, we're looking forward to working with Dexter Builders in the future.

The concrete had seriously deteriorated. They replaced it. I do not remember the exact timing and pricing, but they were prompt, courtesous, reasonable priced and the work looks better than the original. I would use them again

Never called back after an inquiry as to the availability of a product. And I called twice.

Very well. We've used them several times. Great quality work. Occasionally slip on delivery dates. They're not cheap, but they do good work.

I did the demolition work of tearing down an old deck, and had Dexter Block build a brick paver patio in its place. They did a great job, and did the work ahead of schedule. The project team was great, and worked h****** this project. They kept the area clean during the project, and cleaned up well after the work was done. The patio brick paver is level and graded well; this is due to the ground preparation work performed by Dexter Block. They communicated well during the pre-sales process, and during the project. Can't wait to plan our next project and continue building out the patio next year!

Dexter builder returned my call immediately. An appointment for a quote was arrange and Rachel arrived on time. She sent me an email with the quote later that same day. Rachel was efficient, very personable and very knowledgeable. It was Rachel that sold me on using Dexter Builder. The workman that installed the shower pan was on time and very knowledgeable. I appreciated him answering all my questions, giving me tips and doing a great job even though we didn’t hire they to do the complete shower (tiling). In hind sight, I should have had them lay the tile. It would have been a lot easier and a lot faster with less stress.

Dan from the roofing department arrived at my house early, beat me home actually. I described the problem to him. He went up on the roof to investigate. He took before and after photos of the repair. Was very happy with their service.

Dexter Block rebuilt our chimney on our 100 year old house and did a fantastic job. We wanted to save the original brick and they were able to do that, and even improve on it by creating a very nice pattern at the top of the chimney that mimicked the brickwork on the first story of the house. They were quick and extremely reasonably priced. The job required scaffolding and they got it up and back down fast and smoothly. We'd use them again in the future if we have any other masonry projects. Highly recommended.

Quoted 4 week job became a four month job.

Estimated one week to complete and was done on time.
