Fred's Key Shop & Locksmith

I will never go back there. It's a good-old-boys place; one young employee was hostile when he couldn't program a key I had purchased online. I finally had to return it (no problem at that place of business at all) and purchase a new one from Fred's, costing me $100 more. Another young employee was argumentative, hostile and belligerent. A bystander customer, hearing our discussion and after the employee left the room, turned to me and told me he agreed with me. I think they are misogynistic and as a woman, I will go far out of my way to avoid this place.

I contacted Fred's Locksmith in order to get new keys and locks for my newly purchased home. I called on a Thursday, and they were able to send out a locksmith on the following Monday. They mentioned they don't make appointments out longer than a week in advance. I explained that I have a historic house in Detroit that is 120 years old and some of the deadbolts and locks still have some of the original materials, and I would like to preserve these materials. The worker at Fred's said he would send out a specialist locksmith who has been in the trade for 40 years and specializes in historic homes/locks. This definitely put me at ease because I didn't want to lose the historical charm of the original materials on our doors. On Monday, the locksmith called me about an hour before my appointment time and mentioned he was running behind by about an hour. He showed up exactly an hour after the original appointment time, and got to work on our locks. It took him about an hour and a half to change the 10 locks total, and make 4 sets of keys for our locks. He even went around with us to explain what he did and how to correctly shut and lock two of our doors since the doorjambs are not plumb against the wall. He left everything as it was before he started working. Fred's has been in business for over 50 years in Detroit and I am happy to support local businesses. I will definitely use Fred's Locksmith again if the need ever arises!

The service was good. It took a bit longer then I thought but the owner drove me to my office.

They showed up on time, they were courteous. They were efficient and left it in better shape than when they found it. The gentleman that came was very pleasant and cleaned up after the job was completed.

I contacted the company and scheduled an appointment for them to come out. They changed six locks, keyed then alike, and gave me four copies of the keys. The locksmith was kind, professional, very knowledgeable, and fast. There was not one problem with the install or the new keys. I am very pleased!

I phoned Fred's after locking myself out, owing to an automatic lock on the inside. The locksmith came promptly (I may have been lucky to find him just getting free), assessed the situation and forced the door open for me. He then explained what had happend, changed the lock and disabled the automatic clasp on the inside of the door. In addition, we assessed the safety of the other doors and he gave me advice on which locks to employ, when and how. It was quick and dirty, and not too expensive. Fred's is the best!

Fred's is run by very competent locksmiths. They are polite, understanding and hard working. I know the advice they give is trustworthy. I have used this company repeatedly and I have always been pleased. I have never even had a key made there that has not fit and worked well. They are real experts in their field.

Poor customer service and appeared to be disorganized.

He is really good and performs all kinds of key work. He is a real locksmith and once he makes my keys I cannot get it duplicated anywhere else. He does not wait on me every time I go down there. He is a bless and I do not have anything negative to say about him. His pricing is excellent and he is not too pricey. I have to stand in line when I go there as there are many people but he takes care of me. He came right away when my daughter required his service. I would use him again in the future.

They are always available. They come all the way from Detroit and it is no problem at all. They are always punctual. I feel very secure with the fact that they give me the original keys and not duplicates. They bring everything they need. They ask us a couple of questions beforehand to see what kind of equipment they need to bring, and they are always prepared.

They are wonderful, family owned company. I have been going there for 20 years. They take care of everything. They come right out. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and seincere. Everything

There was a miscommunication or misunderstanding between us. He didn't do what I had asked them to do but he came back promptly the next day and changed it. His pricing was excellent and I rate him very highly. I would use him in the future if needed.

Once again Fred's did a terrific job for us. The locksmith came when expected and quickly took care of our needs. I have used Fred's many times over the years I wouldn't call anyone esle to work on our locks.

I would give them an A. I think their prices are fair.

We just close on our home on January 13, 2012, called Fred's Key Shop on Saturday, January 14, 2012. The locksmith came out the same day and re-keyed the locks on our doors. He was friendly, professional, knowledgable and honest. He even told us we did not need to change the lock on our garage door and showed my husband how to work it. I would definitely use Fred's Key Shop again and recommend to my friends and family.

The lock removed/installed was an uncommon one, but the service man Steve had what he needed, was experienced, did the work in a timely fashion, and did it well. He also provided me with some valuable advice about the lock's operation and the door it was installed on. I would use this company again for my lock needs and would recommend it to others.

I had used another locksmith for years and first called them, assuming they would be able to fix my lock. The person who came out basically told me it was no good, unfixable, and that for me to replace it would require starting from scratch and probably cost at least $2000. He recommended getting a new door instead! However, I have a wonderful solid oak door with stained glass and had no interest in getting rid of it just to get a modern lock. I called Fred's on the advice of a friend. After I told them I needed someone who understood old locks and old homes, they sent a gentleman with lots and lots of experience working on some of the older homes and buildings in Detroit. Matt came out the same day I called, and assured me he could repair, not replace, my lock. He did fantastic work and got it working perfectly again. He even exchanged the doorknob for a little used matching one from a closet in my home that had better threading and would last longer. He charged me less than I anticipated, fixed my problem completely, and as a delightful bonus, he told me some great stories about historical Detroit. I fully intend to recommend this company to all of my friends who may need locksmith services and I won't be using any other service but this one from now on. Hopefully, Matt keeps working, because he is a treasure - a real craftsman with an artist's touch! I recommend this company very highly, especially for any home that may need an understanding of how it worked when things were made to last.

Harold, the professional who handled the job, was great. He had to make a return trip because the door needed new parts. The only concern I have is that is seems like Fred's Key Shop double or triple books their jobs. Harold was a professional was the poor man had to deal with the shop calling him and ordering to get out to the next job! I told him not to worry and go out to the next job since my job wasn't that big of a priority, but holy moley! I feel sorry for Harold that he has to deal with that type of attitude from his bosses.

I needed keys to a set of rooms in a very old building where i work. I had no keys, but managed to borrow a set from another person who worked in the same building. I was told and quot;Go See Fred'sand quot;. the advice was good: Fred's found the non-standard blanks for the keys after a short search, and duplicated a set of keys for me on the spot while I waited. I was charge the standard price, nothing for the difficulties of finding the blanks or making keys that were non-standard. We've used Fred's many times. Living in a 1911 house as we do, we've had locks break, keys get too bent to use, and locks needing replacement or re-keying. Fred's has been the best place to go - and you get good humor and joking along with the keys. Their prices are similar to standard and quot;big boxand quot; charges, but they do so much more than just copy ordinary keys. We quickly found out that other places would take one look at one of our old keys or locks, and say and quot;we can't do thatand quot;. Fred's in contrast has never even paused before taking on any task we've brought them. Fred's is great!

My mother's lock on a main door began to malfunction, so I called Fred's Key Shop to fix the problem since I had used them personally at my home in the past, the locksmith came out within 30-45 min, he replaced the door lock and made me additional keys (2 came with new lock) and completed this whole task in about 15 - 20 mins. He was very nice, pleasant and friendly, I was very pleased.

The company sent an employee out on Saturday, he was very prompt, professional and nice, I had bought a new lock for my door he put the lock in quickly and efficiently, he cleaned up his area and left, the lock works great

I am very satisfied with the overall experience. I have used them twice and they have been very professional and punctual. They have great follow up. Their prices are reasonable. They have great emergency service.

I had two new keys made, and also brought in a key that didn't work very well (not made by Fred.) I waited while they did my keys. It was very busy, as several people were there when I arrived. Even so, it was only about 10 minute of waiting time. They made three new keys, one of them based on the old defective key. They showed me that the defective key was slightly bent, and would have broken before long. There was a great deal of activity while I was there, but they had seats for waiting, and managed to get people in and out quickly. As always, they had a great sense of humor in their conversations with customers. I add that all three new keys worked just fine.

They have done all my locks for years. They are in downtown Detroit, and even though I am in Royal Oak now, he did the job! The electricity wasn't on yet, so he couldn't see to finishes the locks. He is coming back this week to do the garage doors.

Great. They came on time, they were finished within 45 minutes. The workman was pleasant. We have used them twice now. The price was fair.
