Generally ok, except they cut 3/4 through a roof joist when installing the new vent. They fixed this with a metal patch, but they should have drilled a pilot hole to locate the joists first.
Description of Work: Replaced a bathroom air vent that was making noise when the wind picked up.

Made original phone call on Saturday. Made an appointment for estimate on Monday. Arrived promptly. Was able to diagnose problem. We were thinking about replacing all trim on house, replacing front gutter and putting gutter on back. He was very helpful in showing us and walking us through all our options. Even took the time to give an estimate on future work besides the repair job. I called back on Tuesday with a question and left a message. He returned call and left message that day. I returned call on Wednesday and left message to call back after 2:30. Due to my job I am unable to answer my cell during work. Never heard back. Their estimate was just a little more than another company. Not enough to choose against them based on just price.
Description of Work: Eight foot section of gutter came down and brought with it soffit and trim. Needed to repair a section and then remove rest of gutter and replace whole front gutter. Quote for $1525.00 Remove rotted soffit, gutter board, haul away install 2 rafter tails onto last 2 rafters install 2x4 onto end of rafters (to replace rotted) and cover with 1x6 fascia install custom aluminum trim over new wood install 3-4 pcs of alum soffit custom make and install seamless aluminum gutter on front with 2 downspouts

Everything was fine. They offered a nice financing package, and they did not play around. Some of the other companies would give a high price and then call back with a lower offer--Kearns, on the other hand, laid out the prices right up front. The crew came and everything was done to my satisfaction. I was happy with their work.

There was one little thing, of course it wasn't there fault, the skylight company that supplied the skylight took a while. They said that because the skylight was larger than normal it was considered a custom job. He put the order in back in July and the skylight didn't come until September. When the skylight came back it was narrower than the opening. Kearns told me they could order a new and it would take 6-8 weeks or they could fix it so the skylight would fit and it would only take a day.
Description of Work: I had a skylight put in, they did put on a new chimney cap and did some tuck pointing on the chimney. Up against the chimney on the roof they put some counter flashing.

There were no surprises. The crew made the appointment and came when they were supposed to. The work was done efficiently and they cleaned up after themselves. I didn't even realize that they had left since they were so quick.
Description of Work: A house long portion of the gutter was starting to pull away from the fascia of the house and would eventually lead to a replacement of the fascia if not tightened. Also 2 smaller portions of gutter were not pitched properly and not draining properly. Brendon came over to do an estimate and never tried to sell us on a new gutter, just discussed the repair. In approximately a week after okaying the estimate, a 2 man crew came over and did the repairs and cleaned up after themselves.

Response from Kearns Brothers Inc
DEPENDING ON THE TIME FRAME THAT THIS PERSON SUPPOSEDLY RECEIVED AN ESTIMATE FROM US IT IS LIKELY THAT THE PRICE DID INCREASE. SHINGLE AND UNDERLAYMENT PRICES HAVE RISEN AT AN UNPRECEDENTED RATE DURING 2008, VIRTUALLY DOUBLING SINCE APRIL. BECAUSE OF THIS VOLATILITY, OUR ESTIMATES CLEARLY STATE THAT THEY MAY BE WITHDRAWN AFTER 15 DAYS. WE ARE SORRY THAT THIS PERSON HAD A NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE BUT WE PREFER TO BE UP FRONT WITH OUR CLIENTS REGARDING ANY PRICE INCREASES. THIS IS NOT A CALL WE ENJOY MAKING AND IS RARELY WHAT THE CUSTOMER WANTS TO HEAR, BUT WE FEEL THAT IT IS THE HONEST AND PRUDENT WAY TO DO BUSINESS. HAD THIS PERSON ACCEPTED OUR PROPOSAL TO DO THE WORK WE WOULD HAVE OF COURSE HONORED THE CONTRACT PRICE AND ABSORBED ANY PRICE INCREASES, AS WE HAVE DONE FOR ALL OF OUR CLIENTS DURING THIS TRYING YEAR.

All we wanted on our roof was the same style and color that was already there. Their sales rep, Rudy Mendez, informed us that our style of roof was no longer being manufactured. He brought out what he had us believe were the only style of roofs available today. We worried about the style because sections of our partially dutch colonial roof are at eye level and just above the brick along our front walkway. We felt that we had no other choice but to order the shingles shown to us but insisted that at least the color be dark brown like we already had. Rudy showed us a small color sample (about 3" x 2") and it looked consistent with our old roof. We believed him and ordered the roof. When the roof went on, the shingles have much lighter shades of brown and light beige which gives the appearance of a checkerboard. These shingles stick out like a sore thumb above our brick! We were never shown an actual larger section of this shingle color because if we were, we would have never, ever ordered this roof! And - we know now that the style and color of our old roof is available. (We actually have some samples that were given to us by Rudy after the roof was done.) And there's more. I had to point out to the sales rep that trim work was needed on the front of the house. Unbelievable! Now I know why - they don't know how to do trim work. Part of it has gaps, is crooked and flashing along the upper sides of the house is exposed. They didn't bother to put shingles over it. The work was very, very unprofessional! The work was done on October 7 and Mr. Mike Kearns, president - who informed us that he knew about our concerns that very day - did not talk with us until October 30. When the president of this company began to tell us about his close family ties with his sales rep, Rudy, instead of how can he help us, that is when we knew that we were not going to have this situation resolved. He has let us know that he does not believe us and stands by his rep. We feel that we should have the right roof put on our house at no extra cost since it was their mistake or return our money to us so we can get it done properly and they refuse to comply. They have offered to "fix" the trim work but we are worried since, Mr. Mike Kearns, thought that there wasn't anything wrong with the trim. We see this whole transaction as nothing more than "making the sale - getting the check - and running". Customer service is non-existent with this company and there are huge communication problems.
Description of Work: Remove old roof, replace boards if necessary and install a new roof on house and attached garage. Added insulation in attic.

I called a number of companies. Most were unaware of the problem with the siding or did not want to deal with it. I called Kearns Brothers & they sent a young man out to look at it. He was very reassuring. He was aware of the problem & after climbing on the roof & walking around the house, pointed out that only 2 areas needed to be repaired. Within a week, Kearns Brothers had a crew out & the siding removed & replaced in the 2 problem areas. They were thorough & professional. The work & cleanup was completed in less then half a day.
Description of Work: Replaced siding on 2 dormers. The siding had been recalled because of lack of durability. We had purchased the house 2 years prior & needed to sell because of job relocation. We were unaware of the bad siding until a home inspector came & pointed it out. He pointed out the siding was long lasting unless it touched something with moisture in it cement, roofing, etc.

The gutter over my driveway was leaking at a corner joint and causing ice to form on the driveway in the winter. I asked Kearns to give me a quote to repair the gutter and to install a power roof vent. Their representative came out and explained why a power roof vent would was not needed and gave me a quote for the gutter repair. I was impressed that he recommended against the power roof vent - he could have just installed it and made some extra money, but he provided good advise and only recommended the work that was actually needed. They replaced the sections of gutter over my driveway (about 30 ft) and color matched the rest of the gutter perfectly. They came out within a couple of days of me giving them authorization. They did the job quickly and professionally.

About a month and half later, just as stated, the crew arrived and worked for about a week. They were meticulous in their efforts and did a wonderful job of fitting trim to every little corner of the house. In addition, the gutters look great and I'm enjoying watching the leaves fall right now and NOT end up in our gutters. The house trim looks like new. As the last crew left on the final day, we noticed the next morning that the exterior flood lights tripped the breaker when we turned them on. I called Mike Kearns to advise and he promptly sent a great electrician. The electrician quickly analyzed the installation crew had reversed the polarity of one of the floods when they reinstalled same. The fix was easy as the electrician corrected the polarity so we are now "back in business". We couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the work and the entire experience. I would recommend Kearns Brothers to anyone without reservation!
Description of Work: Our 60 year old ranch has wood trim and galvanized gutters. I was sick of climbing the ladders and painting the trim as well as cleaning out the gutters all of the time. I contacted Kearns Brothers. Earl came out right away and gave me an estimate to cover all trim with aluminum to match the brick siding color and replace all gutters plus install permanent gutter covers. Earl was prompt, friendly and efficient. He gave me the quote on the spot and we signed up. No money down, just pay the balance when the job is complete and we are happy. What a great concept!

Same as before, very nice, very professional, except they didn't follow up on their promises.
Description of Work: Had a 2nd rep come out to give us estimates on 2 potential jobs: 1 for a 250 sq ft dormer, the other for an 800 sq ft addition. I believe the reps name was Keith. He was very helpful, had a lot of good ideas and advice as to how we could get the best bang for the buck. We told him we were in the planning phase, and would be doing this work next year at the earliest, so just get us the quote when he could. 2+ months later, still haven't heard anything.

Right from the start, the job did not go as planned. Since the job involved removal of all boards first, then removal of insulation, we were told that the job would only be carried out on planned date if there was less than a 30% chance of rain. So, on the day before when we learned that there most definitely would be rain the next day, we put a call in to Brenden Brownfield the salesman/job leader. No return call. When Tim the roofing crew leader showed up the next morning, he said Brenden was wrong and if they didn't do a job with 30% chance of rain, they wouldn't get any work done. This would ordinarily make sense, and maybe with a typical roof job, but, since the plan called for complete removal first, removal of insulation, then installation of a new roof. Tim was wrong, or Brenden never shared our agreed to plan with the actual crew that would come out. That is the pervasive problem - no communication. No consultation with when work crews will arrive, you are the last to know, and the plans you agree to are worthless. Since they did not remove old insulation that day, the new plan was to come out (on one day) and remove the old and install the new. This is what you won't believe - since they did not do this according to plan. We were told that they would have to CUT A HOLE IN THE NEW ROOF IN ORDER TO REMOVE/INSTALL INSULATION!... What???? Yes. Clearly you must be joking; why would anyone have a completely new roof put on, pay dearly for it, just to have them cut holes into it. This was suggested not only by Brenden, but, by Mike Kearns, the owner himself. Surely there must be a better way? So, for about 2 weeks, spouse and I could barely sleep thinking about this, as the only alternative given to us was to drag the tube through a bedroom and then through the attic access. The problem with that is there is a risk of insulation being blown through my house. If anyone has had their ductwork cleaned, you know that the tube can have holes, and be somewhat messy. My daughters have asthma, so, this is a big concern. It should be for anyone, as fiberglass insulation is not something you want blowing around your living quarters. I suggest that they go through the gable vents, no, no, it will have to be through a hole, or the bedroom window. Finally, we find out that, yes, the insulation crew will go through the gable vents. Actually that is the preferred way. Really? ... and the owner of the company, Mike Kearns did not know this, and was ready to put holes in my 16,000+ roof. So, the day before insulation was then rescheduled to be removed/installed, the forecast was for all day rain. We called the office, because of the rain, to have only removal at that time. Brenden said it would take 1 hour - 2 tops. IT TOOK 6 HOURS in the rain for removal alone. Brenden knows nothing about the work that each crew does.
Description of Work: Original plan was complete tear off (including all boards) of old roof, removal and re-installation of new cellulose insulation. Old insulation was to be removed while all boards, etc were off the house, so that meant the roof was to be completely stripped before installing new roof.

Overall, not okay. We ordered windows with Sun Clean glass. We did not get Sun Clean glass. By the time this was confirmed by our sales person, that Kearn's Bros. placed the order incorrectly, the windows were already installed. Kearn's Bros. offered to replace the glass packs or reduce the bill. They did not offer to replace the complete window sashes, glass packs with surrounding frame. After consulting with experts in the field, they suggested that we not have the glass packs replaced. We reached an agreement with Kearns Bros. to reduce the cost of the job. The only other issue that has not been resolved is a some aluminum trim that was not caulked. The subcontractor who did the actual window installation was excellent.
Description of Work: Removed ten old vinyl windows and replaced with Sunrise Restorations, triple glazed vinyl windows. Removed one vinyl sliding door and replaced with Sunrise vinyl sliding door, double pane. Replaced aluminum trim as needed. The work was done in December, 2007.

Because I have a rubber roof, this ended up being a very atypical install. Their installers recognized this immediately. We got our original estimate on May 31st. We had several quotes, so we took a few days to decide. We accepted the quote on June 4th, and at that time they told us it would be 2-3 weeks before they could work us into the schedule. Someone was supposed to call us and let us know what the date would be. Two weeks later, we still hadn't heard from them, so we called. They then told us it would be about another 2 weeks. They made an appointment one day, then had to cancel because they didn't finish their previous job in time. They rescheduled for July 4th, even though it was a holiday. On July 4th, they called in the morning, said it was raining (where they were, not where we live), so they couldn't work that day. Finally came out the following day. Once they arrived to do the work, everything went fine. They were finished in about an hour, and did an excellent job. We're very happy with the work, just not with the scheduling.
Description of Work: One of the eaves had separated from the rafters and started to sag, causing the fascia board to pull away from the roof and opening up a hole. They came in and removed the gutter, fascia trim and soffit. Added new 2x6 to the existing rafters, installed new fascia, and put everything back together.
