They were fantastic! From informing me that my furnace filter was the wrong size (the previous owners had it wrong and I was just using what they used) to keeping me from getting ripped off, they have been a joy to work with. I had contacted someone else to fix my furnace, but when they told me the price tag, $800+, I needed to think about it. I called Schaafsma and told them what was wrong and they said that was way too high. They came and checked it out, and it cost me about $250 to fix. Would highly recommend the friendly folk at Schaafsma. All the techs that came out were extremely nice as well.

Wonderful! Schaafsma Heating & Cooling has always done a wonderful job on all the work they have done for me. Their installers have always been very professional, and their work has been very thorough. The installers were always polite and respectful when in my home and never left any mess after they finished. They kept their appointment times and finished the job when they said it would be done. I have mentioned to friends and neighbors many times that I was very thankful I had Schaafsma do my work. I felt that I could trust them. So far, they have never let me down.

Used their service plan to get better performance on my air conditioning units and boilers. Had them service both, as our air conditioners never really cooled our house well! They recommend I replace my unit for $22K... as the flow thru the air handler didn't have enough cooling runs. We didn't do this as the system was high efficiency and $22K is a lot of $. So we had them recharge the system and paid $900 a month for cooling. Well the next year we asked to remove the air handler out of the attic and provide the extra runs $ 9.5K Well again lots of $ for moving a unit 10 feet! Paid the high bills again... now its winter maintenance and high repair costs to my boilers! Again we didn't fix it as the system never failed or showed signs of failure! So this spring called another Heating and Cooling company and the air handler move cost less than $3k. No additional air runs were added as claimed but they recommended larger intake! Now my air works also the compressed required a new capacitor that was replaced in the 1st year of my service contract. Well the was done wrong reversing the fan blades causing the unit to run hot and loud. Again this was spotted and fixed. Thank you for company B! Now talked to customer service as I felt that 2 years of maintenance contract I paid just so that the had an in to charge high and under deliver just seemed wrong so I asked for the maintenance fees back as I felt wronged. But they feel they were not wrong in their work and they stand behind there findings. Well sad to think I could have paid 3X more and got less... you make the call.

Response from Schaafsma Heating & Cooling
It is our professional opinion that the service performed was performed accurately. Mr. [member name removed] contacted Schaafsma to receive a quote for new equipment at that time our comfort consultant had recommended that he have his existing equipment serviced. At the initial visit there were two capacitors replaced and it was also noted that the refrigerant charge would not be correct due to airflow problems caused by a poor duct system design. Mr. [member name removed] continued using his equipment and after his maintenance visit we provided a quote to move his indoor unit and make modifications to his duct system because it was once again noted that there were airflow problems. At that time he decided to continue using his system the way it was performing. We feel the high utility bills were a direct result of poor airflow not the outdoor fan running backwards which could not happen from wiring a capacitor wrong and could only happen if the motor was disassembled and the position of the motor armature was changed. The maintenance that we performed on both his heating and cooling equipment was done per initial expectations and repairs were based on the findings of the technician to prevent issues with the equipment. As for the quotes for equipment it may not be a fair comparison of what we quoted versus what he had done. As was mentioned the additional runs were not installed as we recommended, so it makes sense that a partial job will cost less than a complete job. In the end Mr. [member name removed] had at minimum some of the airflow issues, which were recommended repairs from the beginning, repaired and is now more comfortable in his home. Our goal is to provide excellent service and educate our customers while doing so. We understand that occasionally we are not a god fit for a customer and think that this is one of those occasions. We are happy that Mr. [member name removed] is more comfortable in his home and wish him nothing but the best in the future.

It went great. They are very professional, come when they say they'll be there and do a thorough job. As for my generator, another vendor told me that it was dead and presented me with a $5,000 quote for a replacement. The Schaafsma rep came out, checked it over and found a missing spark plug! After replacing that the generator started up and has been working great ever since! I'll continue to use this company going forward for sure!

In 2011 I checked out several companies getting quotes and settled on Schaafsma liking their presentation, proposal and price. They quickly got started and their technicians were friendly, very courteous, and professional. They installed a Bryant Hybrid Air to Air Heat Pump system. The work was done very well, and we love the system. We have them service and check it out twice a year and have a service contract which reduces costs if we need more than just a checkup which is covered. I feel they are very good at what they do, and are very honest about their product.

After looking at the water heater, the technician said he could try turning the heat down and see if that might work, or he could put a new part on it. I thought we decided together to try the heat turning down option, but when that didn't work, he came back to put on the part and I was charged another service call. They tried to say I turned down the new part, but I didn't feel like I was turning it down, just trying what he suggested as a possibility. The new part didn't work either, so I had to get a new water heater. They didn't charge me the service call when they put in the water heater. I probably would have turned down the offer of the new heater and gone elsewhere if they had. A friend put in a larger heater right before I did and hers was about half what might was. I have a service agreement with them, so I thought they would be a little nicer about the service call repeat. Other service people have never charged me a second service charge when we are working on the same repair situation. One of the people who answers phones and schedules appointments was a little sharp with me.

Thank you for the feedback. I believe the back and forth with the inspector was he wanted us to change the vent design inside the furnace for which the manufacturer has already received UL approval. We finally did reach an agreement with the inspector that the venting was installed according to the mechanical code. I'm sorry you were caught up in the back and forth.

I apologize for our technician missing the appointment. It’s not always easy to schedule a service call for an exact time and we appreciate that everyone is busy which is why we schedule 2 hour time blocks instead of the traditional 4 hour time blocks. I checked with the service department to see why we would have the technician leave before the scheduled appointment. In reviewing the GPS report it looks like he did arrive at 2:34 and then waited until 3:14. It sounds like we may have just missed each other and normally we would have liked him to wait just a little longer. I also spoke to our service manager about not returning the call and went through his notes from messages left while he was gone and he must have somehow missed listening to the message because he didn’t have a note on it, so we went through the archive of saved messages and found the message that you left. I understand he has reached out to you and scheduled an appointment for after 3:30, we look forward to making you happy. Thank you for the feedback on where we dropped the ball and also for providing valuable input on possibly extending our hours. Again our apologies for the inconvenience.

EDIT 12/2: I'm changing the rating because they're working with us (on the things that have a chance of being fixed) and I don't know how this is going to work out. I don't want to rate them an F when they're trying to fix things. It's been 7 years now and even though it's never run very well, it wasn't worth trying to get them to fix it. Again. We got fed up eventually and called another company to tell us how to fix it today, and we got some horrible news. More on that later. Here's the beginning of the problems... The removal of the old boiler was awful. I understand the thing was probably 500 pounds but someone got it down there, so it should be possible to bring it back up. They were yelling and arguing and swearing at each other about it. They ended up breaking the thing in half, which I don't really care about. But the thing was coated in sludge on the inside, and they got that sludge EVERYWHERE on their way out of the house and didn't clean it up until I asked them to. And even then the guy literally huffed at me about it. We were without heat for at least a week for the installation, and a few days more when they came back to fix some things. I had no idea this wasn't typical so we didn't complain. That's a minor problem though. The big problem is that everything was done wrong. And I am not exaggerating. They installed the downstairs radiators on the outside of the drywall with all of the pipes showing. We demanded they redo that and the company was fine with it but the installer acted like we'd asked him for his left leg. They were redone, but so poorly the account manager apologized to us about it. That's also minor compared to what happened with the boiler install. First, they sold us an inappropriately sized boiler. I only today discovered that having an overly powerful boiler can be a bad thing. Second, they installed the thing extremely badly. Even I could tell it was at the very least clumsily done. There are pipes going every which way. It's like going through a 3D maze to follow them. I also found out today there should have been a second pump installed to help circulate the water. And there should have been an external temperature sensor that reads the outside temp and the boiler uses that to control the heat levels it outputs. Also, I guess to test the boiler, they put the thing on full blast and remove the thermostat control to make sure it will work. They left the thermostat control off when they left. We called them, and the house was 85 degrees (in November) before they got it fixed. We had to have them back a few more times but I can't remember specifics. Here's how we discovered we have a huge problem instead of the minor one we thought we had: We have this awful noise that happens every couple days when the boiler kicks in. We called them at least 3 times because they kept not fixing the problem. They claimed it was the result of the air intake and vents being too close together. So they put in extra external PVC pipe to separate the in and out pipes. When that didn't fix it, they made it bigger, and then bigger still. When that still didn't fix it, we threw up our hands and said I guess we'll just live with it because they say this is the problem and the pipes are looking ridiculous enough and it's still happening. We should have gotten fed up with it a LONG time ago. We finally did get fed up and had someone from a different company come to figure it out today. It's not the intake and vents making the thing rumble. It's the entire system rattling, including the boiler. Because of the huge power of the boiler, the water gets heated incredibly quickly. And because there's no second pump and the mess of pipes, the water isn't leaving the boiler like it should. So pipes are groaning because they're being abused, and so is the boiler. Our boiler is shaking itself apart!!! It's been 7 or so years and the new technician said he'd be surprised if it lasted more than another 5. And because it was improperly installed, the manufacturer isn't going to replace it under warranty. We'll be calling Schaafsma in the morning because it's an $8k job to fix this and I believe they should help make it right.

We had prepaid twice a year service on air and twice a year service on air conditioning. It was a lot cheaper to prepay for the inspections every year than to pay for them independently. They are very knowledgeable, everyone was clean, everyone was friendly and on time. They explained everything to my husband as they went along, everything was fine. The furnace was done about 4 months ago and we will probably have the air ducts done in the fall.

It started out well enough. A man named Paul arrived at my home and went straight down to the basement to look at my furnace. After he finished, we went upstairs to discuss system options and determine a price for the job. I was planning on going with them because they would install a Bryant system which I feel is a good brand name and at a very reasonable price. I went down to my basement to shut off lights and close up after he left and to my surprise, saw that several holes had been drilled into the side of my furnace and cold air intake duct above the furnace and the metal shavings from the drilling had just been left all over the floor. I immediately contacted Schaafsma and was told that drilling the holes was necessary in order to determine static pressure in the furnace. It didn't matter to me. They had absolutely no right putting holes in a very expensive and vital component in my home without my permission. It would have been nice if he had at least cleaned up his mess before he left also. Because of this incident, I chose not to hire Schaafsma. If you want my business, I expect you to behave in a professional and courteous manner in my home. I had someone else install a system for me who did an outstanding job. THEN just this past week, a neighbor of mine had central air conditioning added to his newer furnace. I was out working in my yard and he came over and we started talking. The person who came over from Schaafsma to give him a price for central air, who is also someone who happens to know a family member of mine, told my neighbor that the person that I hired to do my system was unqualified and did not follow proper installation protocol, etc. Not only did they have the audacity to drill holes in the side of my furnace without asking, but then a whole year later, one of their employees is gossiping about me to my neighbors, simply because he is disgruntled that I did not hire him to install a new furnace and air for me. Clearly, this is a company that does not believe in proper business ethics and professionalism. I will never hire this company for any HVAC work whatsoever and will not recommend them to others. They were the least expensive in terms of estimates and now I see why. Good professional service costs money.
Description of Work: Representative came out to give me an estimate for a total HVAC replacement and performed a series of tests on my current system to determine differences in my current system versus a new system that they could install for me.

This has got to be the worst company for HVAC you can find in the Grand Rapids area. It's not like we didn't give them plenty of opportunities to remedy their mistakes. It's that they don't seem to have the competency. Every time they worked on our systems, it seemed that something else would break shortly afterwards. Even when asked if we should just replace either the boiler or air conditioning units, at various times, they would just gerry rig things until the next failure. The last straw was after they installed our new boiler, which in their defense, they did rush to finish as I finally gave up on maintaining our old one on the day before Christmas. They did go the extra mile to get it done, but it was installed completely wrong. Another of their techs had to come back and redo all the plumbing. Even he botched it up, and the system would cycle on and off every 30 seconds. Finally had to call someone else to fix the system. Same with our A/C. Had them several times and they screwed thing so much there as well. They even put a drain trap in the attic. The next summer, we had a leak and had to fix our ceiling. A trap in the attic? Winter? Hello!!! It froze and cracked. Do NOT let these guys in your home! They should be called SHAFTSMA!
Description of Work: Replaced Boiler and then had to come back at redo the entire plumbing. Installed an overflow drip pan in attic for A/C. Left with hole in pan. Put water detector in lowest point so it always shut off A/C during a hot humid day!

Response from Schaafsma Heating & Cooling
Schaafsma Heating & Cooling went out to [member name removed] residence a number of times over a period of many years. [member name removed] had very old equipment which required repairs throughout the years. The repairs were for a variety of parts on the both the original boiler and air conditioner and were all performed with prior approval. As with all mechanical items, as they age parts tend to fail. All the repairs were done with new parts. As [member name removed] stated once he finally decided to replace his boiler, we expedited the replacement to minimize his time without heat. Unfortunately I do see were we made two return trips. Once was to replace a defective sensor and the other was to correct some piping issues. We by no means are perfect and we try hard to do everything right the first time, but occasionally mistakes happen. [member name removed] makes mention of having to call someone else to fix his system, which is disappointing. We had two issues, one of which was our own fault and both were resolved at no cost. We would have been happy to deal with any problems that were still occurring but we need to be notified. As far as the air conditioning problem, we recommended the secondary drain pan and wet switch be installed. This recommendation is made based upon manufacturer recommendation and the state mechanical code. The switch is designed to shut the air conditioner off if it detects water in the secondary drain pan. The switch needs to be placed in a location where it will detect water, usually the lowest portion of the drain pan. This way a problem can be detected early and corrected before major problems occur. Regarding the trap, that needs to be there as part of the drain system. There is a pressure difference between the cabinet of the air conditioner coil and the surrounding area, that without a trap the drain pan will have a tendency to retain water and can leak that condensate or allow it to soak into the insulation of the coil leading to the possibility of mold growing inside the coil and being redistributed throughout the home. By installing everything properly and up to state code, it does require some maintenance on the homeowner’s part. We regret that these issues were not brought to our attention until years later and it resulted in name calling and questioning our integrity. As a side note after [member name removed] first posting on this a year ago, we left numerous messages, but never received a returned phone call. We stand behind our employees and our products. It is unfortunate, [member name removed] feels the way he does, but problems cannot be resolved if they are not known.

I appreciate the Members feedback. Our goal is to provide prompt service but we also need to do the work the right way. It looks like the original call came in on April 10th. The only two reasons we would book something out that far would typically be we are taking care of our current customers who have a maintenance agreement with us. Maintenance agreement customers take top priority as they have demonstrated a level of loyalty and confidence in us by joining this program. The other reason would be weather related. To perform proper air conditioner maintenance we need the outside temperature to be a minimum of 60 degrees. This allows us to get more accurate readings on the level of the refrigerant charge and the operation of the system. The tune up can be done in cooler weather but to do the best we can we prefer a little warmer weather. The only item we may not do depending upon how the equipment is operating is connecting our refrigerant gauges to the system. For some companies that is a standard item to check how the system is performing. We can actually get the same information only more accurate by taking the operating temperatures and the volume of airflow and doing some basic calculations. We choose this method because every time a set of gauges is connected the system looses a few ounces of refrigerant. This may not seem like much but after a few service calls the system becomes low on refrigerant and operates less efficiently. A homeowner may not notice this but we do and our goal is to make the system run better not worse.

Schaafsma was slow to come out for the urgent service call (~1 week), then told us that another person needed to come out to quote a new airconditioner. The estimator took another week to come out. The estimator basically came up with all the information that they had from when they initially installed the airconditioner, and could have been done over the phone two weeks earlier (we already knew the compressor had went out on an airconditioner that refrigerant was no longer supported). It was going to be another week to get the parts, so we went with another company better recommended on Angie's List.
Description of Work: Schaafsma installed our heating and air conditioning service 8 years ago. They had provided annual service over the years, and we were happy with them. During 2012 heat-wave, our airconditioner went out, so we needed a replacement.

I wouldn’t recommend them; they’re lousy. They’re giving me a lemon. They did incorrect installation in the first place and they admitted it. For the repair, they got it working for a moment then after a while, it wouldn’t. Although they didn’t charge us for the works that they’ve done, it’s the hassle for both of us that count.

We signed a maintenance contract with Schaafsma after seeing their ads on TV. Each time the technician came out to "tune up" our furnace he warned us we would need a new one soon (yes, it was 30+ years old). He would bring up a baby food jar of rust, warning us that this was what he found in our furnace, and it was very dangerous. On the last trip, he said our heat exchanger had a crack. He "terminated" the contract (it was up, anyway) and "referred to sales." In those days the gas company still performed on-call inspections. I called them, and their verdict was that the furnace was fine. When I questioned the gas co technician about the crack, he replied that most older furnaces had lots of hairline cracks (as ours did) but these were not dangerous. Bottom line: I resent the scare tactics used to promote replacement unit sales. I don't know if this was company policy, or simply that of the individual technician. But in my mind he represented the company.
Description of Work: 3 year service contract.

A few corrections the last service which is referred to was actually October 4 2001 and the cost of the 3 year maintenance agreement was $370.00 with two visits each year for the furnace and air conditioner. Also a renewal was sent to you on May 7 2002 because your agreement would end May 31st and you choose not to renew. The technician was doing what was in the homeowner’s best interest. However, the scare tactics referred to are really informing the homeowner of the condition of their furnace and potential hazards. Each year he noted the furnace was in terrible condition and that it was well past the normal life expectancy of a furnace. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a scary subject and something we take seriously. A furnace severally rusted with hairline cracks is just not safe to operate. Even the gas company employee confirmed that hairline cracks in your furnace would be common. Your furnace was leaking 3 PPM of CO which is not significant but there is no way of knowing when that crack will become bigger or turn into a hole. I’m always amazed that someone who is supposed to be knowledgable about furnace and CO finds it easier to tell homeowners what they want to hear rather than tell them what they need to hear. And I’m equally amazed that homeowners will put their lives and the lives of their family at risk by simply choosing to believe one person over another. That is why we offer to come out and do a free second opinion when one of our technicians finds a bad heat exchanger, including remove the heat exchanger if necessary at no cost to confirm one way or another. We offer this because our integrity is at stake and there are just too many people in this industry that do not know how to properly inspect a heat exchanger, perform a combustion analysis or even the hazards of carbon monoxide. Most people don’t realize that a person with no experience or training can be hired and out inspecting, servicing and installing furnaces the next day, which is why our technicians are NATE certified. Sorry for the rant but people who say yes the heat exchanger is cracked but that’s ok or it’s not leaking too much carbon monoxide so it’ll be ok shows just how uneducated some people are in our industry. Even having a CO alarm is no guarantee of safety. ALL CO alarms sold in stores will only alarm after 70 parts per million is detected for several hours and this is stated right on the package. We encourage people to watch the video on our website about carbon monoxide which was produced by Comfort Institute or visit stopcarbonmonoxide.com or Google carbon monoxide and read the information. Low levels of CO can be more dangerous because alarms won’t detect it.

No real problem other than what was described above. The company responded in a timely fashion to do an estimate, but the rep took a very long time on-site to do an estimate and included items that we did not ask for, and which were not necessary, although he did explain this. This left a bit of a bad taste in our mouth, as did the price, which was the highest of the four quotes we received. We decided to use an small with whom we had previously done business.
Description of Work: Pricey. Estimate included items we did not ask for (a new thermostat [$200] and a "deluxe" service package [$500]). Rep took an hour and a half to do an estimate.

Worst experience ever. They were very pushy when I said no and he was very rude. He said he couldn't believe I said no and couldn't believe my thought process. I sent him and his supervisor an email and they apologized but it was uncalled for. He knew I was a single woman, doctor and I just felt like he was unprofessional and disrespectful. He was annoyed.
Description of Work: I had the same furnace for 22 years that was not very efficient. I have a multilevel home with lots of windows. So I got an estimate from this company.

I apologize for the experience you had with our representative. Our philosophy is to educate homeowners provide options and allow the customer to make the choice. We understand not everyone will choose us for their project and at that time hopefully we have provided enough information to help the homeowner get a quality installation from whoever is selected and accept the decision gracefully. Unfortunately, the person you dealt with did not follow these values when dealing with you and his employment was terminated shortly after this incident. Hiring the wrong person can be costly, so we try very hard to hire the right people. In this case, we interviewed him twice had an outside sales coach interview him and checked references and even a personality profile to try and ensure he would be a good match. However, he still proved to not be a good match with the way we want to sell. Again I apologize for the problem you had with him and we always appreciate feedback.
