They had to come back a number of times to fix things. It was about five or six times before everything was fixed. I would use them again, but it left me a little disappointed that it wasn't all done the first time.

I'm sorry that in this instance it took additional appointments to get everything tuned in. I understand how frustrating it can be to have to take more time off work than planned. They send a two man crew so they likely spent twice that at least in labor. Was very impressed. They even made the call for me to Moen. Can't say enough good things about the service they gave me. They came out quickly and took all the stress out of the situation for me by making the call for me. Shame on me that it took me so long to get this review posted. I rate them an A and myself something less.
Description of Work: They came out and found that I had a leaking spay hose for my kitchen sink. They actually got Moen to warranty the part for me since I just bought the house so they did not make any market on the parts at all. Just in the pre-paid service for $27 dollars.

Matheson was the only heating & cooling company that responded to my request. Most companies seem to only involve their installation departments in major jobs -- not small after-the-fact issues. The office person was very professional in understanding my issue and directing the issue to the personnel within the company that could address it. An installation manager (Buck S.) promptly came out to inspect the situation, determine course of action, provide an estimate, and request that I wait a few weeks for the work to be done because of their busy schedule (due to the upcoming heating season). The technician was very professional, explained what he proposed to do, agreed to some changes based on my concerns, and completed the fix. I was very satisfied with the job. I thought the cost was a little high for the work performed (high end of original estimate of $300-400), but that probably reflects the small job and overhead of two trips and an initial evaluation.
Description of Work: Responded to unusual request to evaluate lack of flow in return air duct in mid-1960's house. First trip determined that original builder did not complete installation of return air duct system and provided estimate to fix. Second trip technician returned to fix by installing jumper between return air joist cavities to connect a stand alone duct to the main return air duct.

Terrible. Before the first service guy came I basically knew what was wrong with the unit (from mechanical acumen and reading the internet). I was at work, my wife was at home when the first guy (Rich) tried to tell me the fan blower motor was bad - he couldn't get it to start. He tried to sell me a $2,000 "Platinum" service package for my 12 year old furnace. I knew the fan story was BS because i checked the blower fan before calling Matheson. I told my wife to pay the $97 service call and send him away because he clearly did not know what he was doing. I came home and found that the reason the motor did not start was because the wiring leads to the motor start capacitor had been switched so that the capacitor did not work and the motor appeared to be defective. Bet "Rich" didn't know I knew how to push the blower with my finger to make it start without the capacitor. I switched the capacitor leads back to where they belonged and bingo - the motor started with the thermostat, just like it did the day before. I am certain Rich defeated the furnace blower motor to sell me something I didn't need. I called Matheson and complained, and they sent another guy, Trevor, who seemed to know what he was doing. The funny thing was, Trevor never questioned my story about the capacitor leads being switched. He went straight away to the gas "smart valve" which i suspected was bad. Trevor quoted me $600 to replace a $200 valve (per internet pricing), and for some inexplicable reason I paid it without an argument (an important note - because this was not really an emergency because we have 2 smaller furnaces for zoned heat in the house). A day later the valve was fixed. I was happy with the second guy - but the first guy tried to defraud me. Happy to talk to anyone about this.

I am looking to replace my 15 year old hot water tank. Going through Angie's List I found Matheson as a possible company. Called to get quote and was told by Kelly the receptionist that they do not give quotes over the phone and that they would have to come out to do that. Asked if I would be charged for that she said Yes...$97. Of course she says that will be applied to invoice if I chose them. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! They could come out and give me a quote well above other reputable companies and if I decide not to go with them I'm out $100!! Family Heating and Cooling and other companies gave me a quote over the phone without needing to come out. Money grab by Matheson!! They won't get this job or any other Heating and Cooling needs I have. I won't even waste my time calling them if that is the way they do business. What a rip off.

Tech was about 10 min late, but perfectly acceptable. Tech listened to the scope of work and my needs. Overall I was pleased. But then zip, nada. No return call nor estimate by date committed to. Several calls to the office and several apologies later, I finally got a call from one person who was not a manager (they apparently have no manager). He gave excuses as to tech's lack of response and did apologize. I offered to meet him at the house to re-review everything so they could provide estimate (giving them the benefit of the doubt). He said he would get back with me but never did. Called one more time (way more effort than they deserved). Woman who answered assured me the owner would be calling me. Again, no response.

We have used this provider in the past and did not hesitate to contact them for this project. Their estimator provided us with the appropriate, recommended options and information for each; and he was able to answer all of our questions during the visit which allowed us to order and schedule installation that very same day. The crew arrived on the scheduled date, at the scheduled time and went right to work. Our project was completely installed and working as promised. The crew was very respectful to us and of our home. The only hiccup was inspections. I was not told ahead of time that I would need to be home for scheduled inspections, which there would be two ~ electrical and mechanical ~ and once scheduled for a date certain, arrival is provided in a time window of approximately four hours. Although the company coordinated and scheduled convenient inspection dates and times, they do not send a representative to your location during inspections to immediately make any necessary corrections/repairs. Unfortunately, the initial electrical inspection failed requiring me to take additional time for corrections to be made by the company, and then for another inspection (which passed.) I understand that mistakes can happen and I appreciated their immediate response to remedy the situation, however I would have appreciated knowing about my additional time commitments needed for inspections as part of the estimate/information process.

Although my A/C was still in working order, it is probably the original unit (circa 1990). I wanted to replace it before it conked out in the heat of summer. When I contacted Matheson, I received a prompt call back from the service advisor. Todd came to the house to assess what was needed and discuss options. He was very pleasant and professional and I did not feel that he was trying to sell me something more than I needed. On the morning of the service appointment, the technicians, Scott & Brent, arrived on time, introduced themselves and got right to work...also very pleasant and professional. They took precautions to ensure that everything was left in the same condition that they found them...inside and out. I am more than pleased with their service.

Matheson was excellent in all aspects of the job from the sales side to installation. They did what they said they would do at the time they said. were courteous very clean and VERY professional. I had been using them to service my old unit and they were great at that too. The deal included three years service contract so I do not have to pay for winter / summer tune ups. they also applied for all rebates available. At first I thought price was a bit too high but with the rebates , service contract it was actually competitive.

I called Matheson and scheduled an appointment, and they were able to send somebody the next day. Jared came to the house at the appointed time, calling to let me know he was on his way. He was able to look at what was needed and fix it right away, as he had all of the appropriate tools in his truck. It is worth noting that I called another plumber on Angie's List, who did look at the line and indicate that somebody would call me back for an appointment. After not receiving a phone call, and the other company not answering my calls, I called Matheson. Matheson also charged me 60% of what the other plumber quoted for a repair.

I don't believe these people understand a thing about boiler heat. They told us three years ago that we had to replace our existing boiler system, it couldn't be repaired. Three years later, it's doing just fine, thank you. They wanted TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS for what turned out to be a $300 repair from another company.
Description of Work: We had a problem with our boiler heat. Matheson told us we had to buy a whole new system, over 10K. Luckily we had two other companies look and quote and we are still going strong with the boiler that "had to be replaced" according to Matheson three years ago. Approximate cost of service $10,000.00.

Three years ago we reported to the member that her boiler was vented improperly and that critical safeties had been bypassed. At that time the member replied that the boiler had been working fine for six years in this unsafe condition. The member refused options to remedy the unsafe condition and refused to replace the boiler. We again warned the member of the dangers associated with operating a boiler against manufacturer safety requirements and were ignored. All members should realize that safety controls are an integral part of their HVAC system or water heater and should never be altered and/or bypassed in any way. Manufaturer's rules should be followed at all times. We refuse to work on any system until all safety concerns are remedied. A boiler operating with the wrong venting and bypassed safety controls may run fine right up until an unsafe condition occurs. No one can tell when that day will come and that's why manufacturer instructions should always be followed and safeties should always be in excellent working order.

As a result of an recent emergency call to Matheson for what turned out to be a sticking gas valve (see my other review on that) and a potential $750-$800 repair, my wife and I decided to pull ahead our furnace replacement plans. The furnace and central air were the builder special units installed when we built the house in 1995-1996, so they were basically 20 years old and we got a decent service life out of them. Since the water heater was also 20 years old, I assumed that it's anode was shot and since I never did any preventative maintenance on it, I assumed it was also in need of replacement, so we did all of it at once. We had 3 contractors quote the job: Matheson, Family, and Custom Temperature Control. We had done business with Matheson previously, so they were a known quantity to us, and we heard about family from their commercials and their positive reviews on Angie's List. Custom Temperature Control was a pure Angie's List selection based on a lot of positive reviews. My house is about 2500 sq. ft. I told all 3 that I didn't want the top of the line stuff because I didn't want the high price of repair parts that those systems have and I prefer a simpler system. I had them all quote a humidifier as an option. I told them that I intended to have the new AC condenser installed on the opposite side of the house because the current unit sits right next to the gazebo and is really loud in the summer and wrecks the peace and quiet. I asked all 3 to provide a 4" wide air filter and that I planned on re-using my thermostat that I just installed in November of 2014. Lastly, I wanted a basic 50 gallon water heater with atmospheric exhaust. I didn't want a high efficiency model. All 3 were to haul away the old equipment. All 3 contractors were top notch and professional. They really knew their stuff. Family came in with the best price: $6,724 for the combination, or about $1,400 lower than Matheson who was the most expensive at $8,107. Custom came in at a price in-between them at $7,250. I felt all 3 prices were fair based on research that I had done. Both Matheson and Family quoted 100,000 BTU Carrier Performance 96 2 stage heat and variable air flow furnace, with a Carrier 3.5 ton single stage central air unit with a 13 SEER. Custom quoted a Rheem furnace and AC with specs similar to the Carrier. All three quoted a basic 50 gallon gas water heater. All three discussed the DTE and Consumers Energy rebates and would submit them for me. The prices do not include those rebates, which will come to me in the mail. The total of those rebates is $360 ($260 Consumers, $100 DTE). Custom offered to see if they could get me a rebate for my thermostat since I had just installed it in November, the others didn't mention it. Matheson also included replacing the entire drop and boot of the return air duct with a larger one and seal the existing ductwork with mastic up to 8 feet from the furnace. Custom and Family planned to re-use the existing return air drop and didn't specify any sealing. Both Matheson and Custom included a 1 year service agreement while Family's quote didn't mention it. The Carrier furnace has a 10 year warranty on parts and a lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger. Matheson quoted 5 years labor on the Warranty. Family quoted 2 years labor with an option to go to 5 years for an additional $99. Rheem also had 10 years on the Furnace and Custom offered 5 years labor on the warranty. The AC systems were all 10 year parts warranties. The water heaters were 5 years on parts. Lastly, Matheson has 24 hr. emergency service. Niether Family nor Custom offer 24 hr. Emergency service. Ultimately, we chose Matheson even though they were the most expensive. The primary factor in that decision was the 24 hr emergency service and our previous business relationship. Since this is a new furnace, infant mortality is a distinct possibility and failures never happen during business hours. In addition, Matheson is only 5 min from my house and since I've used them before I know they're honest and dependable. That's not to say that the other's aren't, I'm sure they are, it's just that a known quantity is better than an unknown quantity and that knowledge has value. The extra duct work and sealing that Matheson was doing was worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $350-$400 installed and the 1 year service agreement has some cost also. Even if the return air drop didn't need to be replaced, I preferred to have a perfectly fitted drop rather than a modified drop. However, the fact that Matheson was $1,400 more is why I rated them a C on the price. I could justify maybe $500 or so for the extras in Matheson's quote and if I add that to Family's quote along with the extra $99 to bring them up to the 5 year labor on the warranty, then everything is apples to apples and the effective price difference between them drops to $800. Still considerable, but in the end it amounts to Family offering a 10% discount over Matheson which was not enough in my mind to give up the emergency service, the previous business relationship, and close proximity to my home. We scheduled the install for Thursday 3/26/2015 between 8:00 Am and 8:30 Am. The Matheson installers arrived on site at about 8:15 Am and they did an outstanding job. Just beautiful. They covered the entire work pathway inside the house with drop cloths and cleaned up afterward. They were courteous and worked about as quietly as you could possibly expect. The installation was completed at about 2:45 Pm. They offered to schedule the inspection with the city, but I elected to wait since I had to take more time off work and I'd rather schedule it when I'm on vacation. The new Carrier furnace is a lot more quiet than the old furnace, I really have to listen for it. The new filter box is much nicer than the old filter box. The Carrier 4" filter box has a thumbscrew secured cover and plenty of room to reach in and pull the filter out whereas the old filter was held in a 1" slot in the duct that made it difficult to remove and the slot was covered with a piece of bent sheet metal. The Carrier evaporator coil case has an easy to open screwed on cover that should make cleaning the coil easy. My old evaporator case cover was very difficult to remove, so it never got cleaned the entire time we owned it. Anyway, I'm very happy with my choice and hopefully the information I've provided will help others in their planning. We will have to see if the furnace, ac, and hot water heater stay reliable.

I called at 8:45PM on Saturday 2/28/2015 and got the after hours dispatcher. The Metheson technician called me back at approximately 9:00PM and indicated that he was on a job, but was wrapping it up and would be able to get to my home in about 15 min. It took him a couple of minutes to determine that the gas valve was sticking. A light tap on the valve got it unstuck and the furnace was back in operation. He didn't have a replacement valve, but informed me that he could have one on Monday if I was willing to put a 50% deposit on the part. The price of the valve was $572. Since the furnace was old and I intended to replace it soon anyway I asked him about replacement. He stated that if I put the deposit down and decided to replace the furnace that the price of the service call and the deposit would just be put toward the new furnace. After a bit more discussion, I elected to opt out of ordering a replacement valve because I didn't want to be committed to any particular course of action. I wanted to keep my options open so I happily paid the $137 for the emergency service call and the knowledge that I could lightly tap on the valve to buy myself some time. I gave the technician my contact information and a Matheson sales rep called me promptly on Sunday and I set up an appointment for Wednesday the 3rd to get a quote on a furnace replacement. I had to tap on the valve early this morning (Monday 3/2/2015) and I'm sure I'll have to tap on it many more times, but at least I know what the problem is. I'm not concerned about it getting stuck while I'm at work because I have an internet connected thermostat that I installed in November, so I can keep an eye on it and make a run back to home before anything freezes up, so I can afford to take my time and weigh my options. I've had Matheson repair this furnace 2 times in the time I've owned the home (I bought the house new in 1996 and furnace is original el-cheapo builder's model manufactured in 1995). The first time was for an igniter that took out the furnace controller back in 2007. In that case, the old igniter was basically melted and caused a short circuit that burned up the controller (the circuit board was scorched where the igniter was connected). The 2nd time was to replace the blower fan where I found that one of the impeller blades had come loose and was rattling really bad. I called Matheson on the phone and told them what I found and they ordered the replacement blower and I scheduled the installation a couple days later. Matheson has always given me great service, so I can't complain, but I always remain skeptical as a mostly DIY guy, and this occasion was no different since $572 seemed like a lot of money for a gas valve. I decided to see if I could find a replacement valve online. I found that the valve is obsolete, and there were used replacements available for cheap (like $100), but the pictures showed they still had the dirt and grime that was on them when they were removed from wherever it was. No thanks. I found an update kit for the valve that was $399 and appeared to require parts to be removed from the old valve and installed on the update kit. No thanks. So, I was at least able to confirm that $572 was not an unreasonable price for this particular obsolete replacement valve. All in all, I'm very happy with Matheson. They've never tried to rip me off and they've always been fast to respond to emergency service. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a good deal on a new furnace and be able to tell another good story because I don't want to spend $572 + labor on this old furnace.

Trevor was the technician. He provided fairly prompt service for a relatively urgent furnace issue during Friday evening rush hour, somewhat far from the company's address. Trevor was professional and courteous. I would use Matheson again.
Description of Work: "Emergency" visit after hours. Arrived within one hour and a half for furnace service (plenty quick for the needed service). Assessed that intermittent heat was caused by plugged drain trap. In and out of home in 30 minutes, including time spent answering all my questions.

I called and told the operator that our furnace was making a strange noise. They were able to get someone out to look at our furnace the next day. The technician was very nice and curteous and knowledgable. He said that the vent fan needed to be replaced and told us it would be $600. That seemed hig so we called another provider and they were not only able to do it for $200 less they came out and fixed our furnace the same day we called.
