"Everything was fine in the beginning with Logan. He provided us quotes for deck replacement (boards and railings) for $16,000+ and vinyl private fencing for $11,000. We found someone who offered a better warranty on the composite decking for a cheaper price, so we went elsewhere for this thankfully. Our yard was already partially enclosed due to our neighbors having fencing, so we only needed roughly 208 ft of fencing to finish off enclosing the yard. There were a few red flags with Logan that should have been obvious signs to go with another contractor. After our initial quote for both deck and fence, he returned 30 days later to do measurements AGAIN on the deck and showed up alone this time instead of with his buddy. He claimed he "couldn't get ahold of his partner anymore" and had to find someone else. We were quoted a 2 day turnaround time for the fence. When installing the fence, he ran into issues we addressed many times in our consultations which were slopes/hills in our yard. We have dogs so our primary reason for wanting the fence was to keep them enclosed. The first problem area he ran into he contacted us about. We approved the gap between the ground and bottom of the fence in this spot due to the nature of the uneven ground. Our expectation moving forward with the rest of the fence per our conversations was that the rest of the fence was to be installed close to the ground and flush on top and flush with the ground. He agreed many, many times this would be the outcome. We came home to 3 more additional panels that he never consulted us about that had over a 9 inch gap from the ground to the bottom of the fence. These were already concreted in. His recommendation was to place flowers in this gap as if that would prevent my dog from crawling underneath if they desired. It was clear it was just laziness, because if they dug deep enough the fence could have been placed lower to the ground with a few minor adjustments to the actual panels and it would have been fine. After seeing the additional gaps left that we did not approve, we asked him to redo those specific panels to our expectations. He refused. They started work on Thursday (not really because they 'forgot all of their needed tools') and the fence installation didn't begin until Friday. By 6pm Friday they completed majority of the fencing, but had to return Monday because he didn't calculate the material correctly so they were short. So much for a 2 day turn around time. This was even more infuriating after finding this out along with seeing the additional gaps that were left. To save time out of our own busy lives, we decided to not take him to court (although we should have) and had him finish the rest of the fence on Tuesday and paid him off because at this point we just wanted it done. As a business owner myself, the customer service was AWFUL. The communication got worse as the days went on and again, many many red flags. If I could go back and choose someone else to complete this work, I would 100% rightfully so. We had to spend more $$ out of pocket to fix the gaps after paying 11 grand. 10000% DO NOT recommend Logan and whatever buddy he chooses is available at that time to complete work with. Very inexperienced business owner and hope others can avoid this mistake as well."

"April 6 2023, work began. May 12, Erik said powerwash to begin next week. May 18, I texted him asking when to expect the powerwash. He said I'm next on his list (he likes to say this). May 22, he asked to stop by at 5pm so we could pick out a stain color. Didn't show. Texted him at 7:56pm. He said he'd come next day at 9am. Didn't show. Texted him at 10:47am, he said we're next on his list (again). Monday June 5, team stained back deck, I paid for the project in full. Erik told me he would be back the first of August to complete work in front. August/September came & went. No communication. September 26, I texted Erik. He apologized, blamed weather, and said I'm next on the list (again). He said job to be completed Friday or Saturday. Did not show either day. 6:51pm Saturday evening, he texted me and told me he'd show up Monday to finish the job, which he did. While the quality of work was acceptable, how they choose to do business is not. I do not recommend hiring this company."

Yes, you should confirm that the fencing installer you hire is insured before proceeding with the job. In most cases they do not need a specific fencing license, but rather a general contractor’s license. Hiring a licensed contractor protects you as a homeowner from fraud, poor work, and potential legal woes.

Before you hire a fence installer to build you the fence of your dreams for your yard, it’s important to set expectations up front by asking questions. Some questions to consider include:
Do you offer a warranty?
Do you offer financing or a payment plan?
Do you have references?
Do you have photos of previous work?
What type of fencing materials do you work with?

Do you have references?
Are all fasteners exterior (galvanized)?
How deep are you concreting the post?
What is the lowest maintenance fencing?
How will you deal with slopes?

Only some fences require a permit to build. Factors like where you live, how tall your fence will be, and where in your yard you plan to build all impact the need to have a permit. Below are a few examples of when a permit is needed; it’s always best to check with your fence installer to confirm if a permit is required.
Generally, if you live somewhere rural, like on a farm, there’s a good chance you will not need a fence permit. However, you will most likely need a permit if you live in a highly-populated area. In addition, many privacy fences in your backyard won’t need a permit if it is 6 feet or shorter. However, you might need a permit for anything over 3.5 feet in your front yard.

Any solid panels over 8 feet in height will require a permit, while a 2-foot lattice top on a 6-foot fence does not require a permit.
Answered by Connor Andrews at Craftsman Fence, LLC in Kirkland, WA on 01/22/25
Permit requirements can vary, so it's best to check with your county and municipality. Your fence contractor should be able to help confirm the specific requirements.

If you are digging in the ground, then yes. If it's just a repair with no digging, then no.
Answered by Terri Webb at Webb's Fencing & Repairs, Inc. in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on 01/17/25
The average cost to install a fence is between $1,760 and $4,500. These costs are what an average homeowner spends, but you might spend more or less depending on several factors. For a smaller DIY project, you might get away with spending as little as $430, or for a much larger project (like fencing for a 5-acre yard), you can spend in excess of $43,000.
Besides the size of your yard, other factors like your fence material, fence height, site prep, and additional fence features like gates all impact the overall cost. Additionally, the high cost of raw materials and manufacturing can all make the overall price tag higher.

The overall cost of a fence project depends on numerous factors, including the size of your yard, fence material, fence height, site preparation, and additional features like gates.
Answered by Carlos Martinez at CLM Home Improvements in New Carrollton, MD on 01/20/25
Specific pricing varies drastically based on material choices and options. Length of fence, height, and gate options all are contributing factors that will determine the overall cost of a fence. Typically a per foot price can be given that ranges from $20-$50 per linear foot for installations.
Answered by Todd Rosier at A Plus Fencing Solutions in Yakima, WA on 01/08/25
It all depends on the specifications of the fence, such as linear footage, gate installations, demolition and haul-off, and other factors.
Answered by Connor Andrews at Craftsman Fence, LLC in Kirkland, WA on 01/22/25
It depends on the type of fence, the scope of work, and other factors.

Fence installers typically charge by the hour when working on a project. Typically, you can expect to pay around $50 per hour for fence installation. Your project might take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the length of your fence, overall project complexity, and fence type.
