Phil and the entire crew were excellent from start to finish. They are true professionals, with great attention for details. Our project was extensive with several stages, but Phil kept in close contact with us the entire time. Always easy to reach, attentive, and quick to respond to our questions or ideas. The team from Paintworks, their painting company made our walls look perfect. Every person that worked in our home was professional, kind and felt like family by the end. Every day ended with a clean-up of the entire work space. They cared for and respected our home like it was their own. We cannot say enough good things about Swartz Builders and Paintworks. We highly recommend them and we will call upon them again in the future for other projects. Our home is absolutely beautiful and we are proud to have friends come over!
Description of Work: We did interior remodel, drywall, paneling removal, kitchen remodel, new hardwood flooring throughout and painting of all rooms, molding.

Schwartz called me back and stated that he had a bunch of projects he needed to finish up and would not have time to quote my project.
Description of Work: Aaron came to my house in spring 2012 and gave me a rough estimate of what a project we were thinking would cost. We had also talked to a few other builders. All of which said we would need an architect. A few years later when we finally had our plans in hand, we called Schwartz Brothers to get a quote an more accurate estimate.

All of the work on my garage was done in a very professional manner and left me very pleased with the end result. Throughout my experience with Swartz Builders they were very honest and straightforward with me about their availability, the cost of different options, and how long they would need to do the job right. Probably the thing that I liked most about Swartz was that they were very honest with me up front when I called for a quote on my job. I worked directly with the president of the company (who did a great job checking up with me throughout the job and making sure I was happy) and he told me right up front that they were too busy to give me a quote at the time with the reality that they were swamped with work already and would not be able to do the work for me for 6 months or more. I appreciated that they told me the truth rather than trying to cram my job in with all the others and not give me the attention I would need. The president even gave me names of other contractors that he believed could complete the work for me in a timely fashion based on my project description. I was not diligent enough in pursuing these other contractors, but it was nice that he tried to help me out even though it wouldn't make him any richer for his effort. It just happened to work out that I was not in a rush to get the job done and I called them back some months later to see when they could fit me in. At this point they had some free time coming up and they told me they would get my job started first thing when the weather warmed up in the spring (I live in Michigan and an outdoor project like mine is no fun in the winter). They came out with snow still on the ground to look over the garage and give me a quote. They gave me plenty of options to obtain the desired result that I wanted with more or less cost involved and I agreed to have them come out and perform the work. I was assigned a very nice job manager which I became well acquainted with throughout the time the project was ongoing. He always called me or spoke with me in person every day that work was being carried out and he made sure to contact me immediately if any unforeseen circumstances came up that delayed any work. Another observation I made is that the job manager had no trouble with me sticking around and viewing their work which says a lot about their practices and pride in what they were doing. He also took time to explain different improvements to me, why some work had to be done a certain way per code or best practice, and he worked through different design decisions with me that needed to be made on the spot. Every day of the project the job manager and any other employees helping him out would show up in a timely fashion, would work hard to get the job done (as long as the weather allowed it), and cleaned up after themselves at the end of the day. The end result looks great and I had no problem paying for their work. The individuals I worked with were great to deal with on a professional and personal level and I had no qualms about leaving them on their own to complete my garage project. I would highly recommend this company for any type of general construction or re-modelling project you may have!
Description of Work: Swartz Builders worked on a number of improvements to my garage. It was an old structure with a good footprint, but some sagging roof support and badly joined additions. They straightened the existing structure using clamps and installation of bracing studs then they reinforced my main roof with straight 2x6" joists running the width of the structure. Additionally they removed the roof section from a small addition on the back of the structure, increased the height of the framing, and installed new roof framing to maintain the same roof elevation across the entire garage. Finally they finished up with new roofing/shingles for the entire garage, new sliding windows which they ordered specifically to fit into the old framing (while increasing the framing strength), and finally a new insulated sliding garage door with opener.

This is the second time I've hired Swartz and with my first experience, they did a fantastic job. They were responsive, professional, respectful, and curtious. The attention to detail was remarkable. The most significant aspect of the job was the painting. We had 4 bedrooms, a hallway, 7 interior doors, 4 closet doors, a stairway and an entryway repainted. Swartz spent a good two weeks sanding, pathching nail holes, patching staple marks (the stairs had been previously carpeted and were riddled with staple holes), and prepping the walls. The prep work is always the most difficult part of painting and Swartz didn't cut any corners. I've hired other painters in the past and not one spent as much time prepping/fixing then Swartz. The finished product is fantastic! The walls, the doors, the trim, the STAIRS look amazing. In the 3 plus weeks, they were in our home; they were always on time, cleaned up their supplies every day, vaccuumed their mess and were very polite.
Description of Work: The work we had done was an upstairs remodel... refinished hardwood floors, install new bedroom doors including new door frames, new base boards and trim around the doors, new closet doors in the bedrooms and painting (4 bedrooms, hallway, stairway, and entryway)

Need to have front porch columns, overhang and decorative railing redone due to water and insect damage. First spoke with Aaron in autumn of 2013. Said he was too busy and please call back in the spring. Spoke with Aaron a few times on the phone in late winter 2014, and traded a few emails. He was clear they were still very busy, and the work may not get done for a while. Discussed T&M contract and possible date, but never got to formal contract. Further delayed due to referral to a mason (reference provided at no charge) to get porch steps done first. Very professional and personable in conversations, but just too busy for me.

Talked to Aaron about getting an estimate on a building project. He informed me, for him to give me a solid estimate he would need building plans, and a site plan. However, he did supply a ball park estimate. He also supplied the names of a couple of archtects to help in getting the project started. Arron was extreemley helpful, and once the building plans are done he will be at the top of the list to call.
Description of Work: Supplied information to get the building project started.

Very professional - they told us they were very busy and it would take a while to get a quote and complete work as they did not want to take on more work than they could handle. They were open and honest about the process and that they were not the cheapest but were a turn key operation. They provided us good input and when we called to say we were going with a different company they were very courteous and just asked we provide a review n Angie's list.

I can?t say enough good things about Swartz and the job they did on our house. Aaron and his team are absolute professionals. A major kitchen remolding project is very inconvenient for everyone living in the house (especially when you have kids). Aaron?s team does everything possible to make sure the job is done quickly and correctly. The Swartz team is very good about working with anyone (wife, me, or both) at any time. They were also very respectful of being in someone else's home. This was especially important since both my wife and toddler were home most of the time while work was being done. The project manager assigned to our project (Michael) was outstanding. From the very start we talked almost daily. He always made sure my concerns were quickly addressed. He was also very helpful at suggesting changes to my kitchen design to improve the look and feel. It was Michael?s willingness for this back and forth communication that enabled this project to be successful. Some of the best things about Swartz include: 1) Customer service: I never worked with a contractor more dedicated to customer service than Swartz Builders. From the start they do everything possible to make sure you are satisfied with the job they are doing. Having a project manager assigned to the job makes everything so much easier and less stressful. You always know someone is there to answer your questions. 2) Responsiveness: a. Project: The responsiveness of Aaron and his team was outstanding. My primary means of communication with Aaron and his project manager was by text message. I don?t think I waited more than a few hours for a response to any question or concern. b. Quote process: The quote process with Swartz did take about 3 or 4 months from the time I initially called to final quote. However, when you get a final quote it is done right. Everything is itemized in detail so you know exactly what you are paying for and why. This kind of quote takes time and requires the customer to have a detailed project plan (drawings, materials, etc.) prior to the quote being developed. Don?t expect a detailed quote unless you have a reasonable firm detailed project plan. 3) Quality: Outstanding. Everything they do is top rate. When had concerns with how something was done, the project manager would walk me thought it so I understood why it was done that way and made sure I was satisfied with the work. 4) Price/Value: If you are looking for a budget contractor Swartz is not it. I gave them an ?A? because of the excellent overall value. The customer support and work quality is worth the cost. Many friends tell of kitchen remodeling nightmares (disappearing contractors, subpar work, major timing delays, etc.) this will not happen with Swartz. They did everything possible to minimize my stress (and I am the kind of person that will get stressed out on even the smallest detail) and made sure the job was done to my satisfaction. My only negative experience with Swartz was related to getting hardwood flooring color/finish samples prior to the day the floors were finished. Despite my repeated request for flooring samples (various colors and urethane types) they were never able to deliver this. We were required to select the floor color and final finish the morning the floors were sanded and finished. Having to make that big of a decision in a few minutes is very stressful. Getting a sample board with a variety of colors and finished a few weeks ahead of time would have made the process much easier for everyone. However, I do have to admit the floors came out great. Both my wife and I were very satisfied with the final product. Note: Aaron did have the flooring contractor provide a quickly put together sample board with a couple of different floor colors the day before the floors were to be finished. But nothing that showed what the final floor would look like.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen tear out and remodeling of the 1st floor of our 2 story colonel. Work included: Complete tear-out (down to the studs) of existing kitchen. Removal of 2 walls (one was a structural wall). Construction and exterior brickwork required to remove exterior window, glass door wall, and installing new exterior door in place of glass door wall. Install new kitchen including drywall, cabinets, appliances, plumbing, electrical, and granite counter tops. Install and finish all new hardwood flooring in kitchen, dining room, and living room area.

I will start by noting that do to time constraints, we were not able to proceed with Swartz. However, I still feel compelled to provide a review given Aaron's responsiveness, knowledge, and overall professionalism (even after I told him we were going with a different contractor due to the timing needs / issues). In summary, we are purchasing a new home and wanted to have the addition work included in our mortgage. This process required plans and bid work to be completed on a very accelerated time line to meet a short closing timeline. We had not engaged an architect and given this timeline, we ultimately chose a design / build contractor that completed their own drawings. If we had drawings already, Swartz would have been at the top of our list. I wanted to write this review for Swartz to let others know that, similar to other posts you will see on Angie's List, our experience through the initial project review and contractor interview phase gave us tremendous confidence that Swartz Builders would provide quality work. Aaron is clearly knowledgeable, responsive, and professional. We would strongly encourage anyone planning a remodeling or addition project to make sure you consider Swartz and Aaron.
Description of Work: Spoke with Aaron regarding a addition we wanted to add over the garage of the home we were purchasing. This addition is intended as a recreation room, but involved both significant demolition as well as creatively connecting the addition through the main living area.

Worked with Aaron. Before even coming out, he advised we should go to an architect to develop a rough sketch. We went to an architect he recommended and paid a fee to develop a sketch. Then Aaron came out and consistently reminded us how busy he was and how he screened his customers for the best prospects. He said we "qualified" . He gave us a "ball park" range estimate off the top of his head...nothing in writing. He requested further detailed drawings from our architect. We had the architect develop drawings and paid an additional fee to the architect. At this point we asked Aaron for a more detailed quote. He wanted a commitment that we would give him the work if he gave us a quote in the range he initially promised....which was very broad. He didn't want to come out again until we provided this commitment. Finally, he agreed to review the detailed drawings and give us a more detailed quote. That was 3 months ago. We haven't heard from him since.
Description of Work: Aaron from Swartz provided a quote to finish our basement and add a sunroom.

Response from Swartz Builders
While I am definitely not totally satisfied with our overall performance with this particular client, I in no way believe this review to be completely fair and accurate. Firstly, when I initially responded to this client, I counseled them to contact an architect for a preliminary drawing, so that whoever ended up looking at the job and bidding it out, they would all be looking at the same sketch and working from the same baseline. From our experience, that always is helpful in getting "apples to apples" bids. I also provided them with the contact information for a very cost effective and experienced architect that we have worked with many times over the years. By providing them with the contact information for an architect, was I in any way committing to do their job. I simply knew that they were going to need construction drawings, regardless of who ended up doing the project, and so I was seeking to be helpful in providing them with good direction and a good referral right from the start. They were obviously free to accept or reject my free advice, with zero obligation to our company. After this client obtained the preliminary construction drawing from the architect, I agreed to meet with them to look at the project. This client's recollection of our conversation is very different than what I tried to communicate while meeting with them. I was in no way a broken record, reciting over and over how busy we are. I simply stated to them the same thing I tell every potential Angie's List client: Because we are one of the top rated remodeling companies on Angie’s List in the whole area, we receive dozens and dozens and dozens of calls from potential Angie's List clients. I explained to them that there is simply no physical way that we can provide each and every one of those clients with a written proposal, as that is all we would ever do, is write up proposals. That being stated, I explained that I also realize that our company isn’t the perfect fit for every homeowner. As a result, at the initial onsite bid appointments, I seek to thoroughly explain who we are and what we are about, in an effort to see if it appears as if we are a good fit for the project or not. In no way do I ever discriminate against a potential client, letting them know if they “qualify” for our company, as if we are a superior judge. That just simply is not accurate and is in no way a reflection of who I am personally or professionally, and I did not come across that way with this client. If I had, they would not have been pressing me so much for a follow-up price. This client also said I gave a “ballpark” estimate off the top of my head, with nothing in writing. While there is some truth in that statement, it is far from the whole picture of what transpired here. I spent over an hour of my time, free of charge, working through each aspect of their potential project with them. After identifying each aspect of the project, I attached numbers to each aspect, even adding them up right in front of them. I bid hundreds of jobs and can typically quickly assess a relatively accurate ballpark bid for potential clients. They mentioned that I requested further detailed drawings. The reason for that is because it was clear to me that they were still were not clear on exactly what they wanted to do, as they were entertaining additional remodeling options even while we were meeting. I simply was trying to communicate that no one could give them a final, detailed proposal without final drawings being established. Finally, they are correct that I do not write up a detailed, polished estimate until I have been awarded the job, as long as I come in within the price range of the preliminary price that I establish with them. My clients always tell me that my proposals are the most thorough they have ever seen, which can be verified by many of the Angie’s List reviews on this site. That being stated, I spend many hours generating a detailed proposal for a large remodel. I cannot “donate” dozens of hours to projects that I am not going to be compensated for. They are correct that I did not want to come out and invest more time, effort and energy into the bid process, until they had decided if they wanted to work with our company as long as we came in at the ballpark price range established. They said, FINALLY, I agreed to review the detailed drawings and give a more detailed quote. That is accurate, and I should not have agreed to do so. Based on similar experiences, I should have firmly stuck to the bidding system we have put in place, as there is good reason for us doing it as we do. Also, it is absolutely not accurate that they never heard back from me. After a period of time had elapsed, I called them with an update, and told them that I was sorry for not having sent them another more detailed price quote. She responded that they thought maybe we weren’t interested in the job. I assured her that though it could appear that way, that was in no way an accurate assessment of our posture, but, rather, we had gotten extremely busy and were struggling to accommodate both potential and actual client demands. At the time, she seemed to be appreciative and understanding. She also stated in that phone conversation that they were disappointed that they hadn’t heard back from us, as they really liked us and were hoping to possibly work with our company. Again, if I had presented myself in such an unprofessional, careless and condescending way, she would not have told me that in this last phone conversation we had. I will be contacting this client again and apologizing for not providing them with the more detailed quote as I committed to do. As always, I hope each potential Angie’s List client will look at the almost four dozen other reviews that we have, most of whom we have actually performed work for. This is the first D grade that we have ever received, and we have rarely received anything lower than an overall A grade for a client that we actually worked with. Also, again, if I had not presented myself and our company in a professional manner, this client would not have been so interested in having me present them with an additional detailed quote. While I am in no way trying to be argumentative or unkind in this response, I do believe it is important for me to provide clarity to this review, as we invest many hours into servicing our Angie’s List clients, and maintaining one of the top ratings in the whole area. This is my second experience with Aaron and his team at Swartz. This time we hired Swartz to redo the basement in our colonial. We had hired Swartz for an outdoor job last year. Based on our great experience last year we hired them for the basement remodel. Work included glass brick windows, remodeled bathroom, dry wall and extensive painting. Their work is top notch and is accompanied by outstanding customer service. Michael, Phil, Luke and Paul spent several weeks getting the job done right. This team is highly recommended. I had them out again tonite for another estimate on exterior paint work..

Overall quality of work was very good, had some issues with timing and one sub not showing up several times (once because he had a "more important job to go to"). Other than that, Aaron is a decent, kind, and knowledgeable person that knows his business. Pricing is more than other quotes we received for similar work (about 10-15%, so not exorbitant) but they keep an immaculate worksite so you pay for that extra professionalism. Had a few issues at the end for added work that seemed exorbitant, we negotiated a settlement of those costs and it was more valuable to me to pay the extra $1,000 and be done with the situation.

Overall, it was a great experience. We would definitely hire them again. As other reviewers have mentioned, they are not the cheapest, and they will tell you that themselves. But, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for.... hiring them to coordinate the number of skilled tradesmen (carpentry, electrical, painting, and floor refinishing) was a valuable service. The professionalism and quality of the work was top notch. We will be looking to hire Swartz for other projects in the future.
Description of Work: We were looking to update our living and dining room, which involved refinishing the hardwood floors, installing recessed lighting, and updating the wood trim (windows, floors, entry ways). Then, of course, we wanted everything painted. Because of the range of work we wanted complete, we ended up calling Swartz. Aaron, Mike and Phillip were a pleasure to work with on this job. They were quick to respond, the quote was easy to follow, and they were all very professional. Mike did the wood work himself. It took some creativity to work with our crooked walls and odd angles. He did all the cutting in the garage to keep the dust to a minimum. I was impressed with that given how cold it was outside. He cleaned up each day and the dust was kept to a minimum. The finished product was amazing. The installation of the 6 recessed lights in our living room was done in one afternoon. With the number of holes cut into the ceiling and the walls, I thought our living would never be the same. I had met with another remodeler who had advised me not to install the lights because our ceiling was flawless. Having a plaster ceiling without a crack, is unusual in an older home. Swartz installed the lights and the new switch plates quickly and cleanly with minimal cuts into the walls and ceiling. The painting started next and with all the new wood work, battered walls, and the holes from the lighting, the painters had their work cut out for them. They did an OUTSTANDING job. I can't tell where any of the holes in the walls were cut to run the wires for the lights and switches. The nail holes from old pictures have vanished. The trim work looks fantastic. I've hired painters before, who I thought did a good job. After Swartz completed their work, I have a new definition of good job. Lastly, we had our floors refinished. Similar to all the other projects, the work was completed quickly, cleanly, and professionally. We had the floors sanded, stained, sealed, and new shoe modeling installed (stained to match the floor). The final product was better than I had imagined.

Aaron Beyer, accompanied by his tile supervisor, Dean, came promptly to assess the job. They were professional and reassuring. They were willing to work around our schedule which was important to us. Instead of pricing out the job of new coumtertops, Aaron recommended a less expensive route: going to a big box store for the counters. I think this demonstrated character. He certainly could have bid that out at a higher cost. A schedule was set. Dean would bring his crew in to review the expectations of the job. Once he had them started, he would leave to supervise other teams. His crew was pleasant and professional. They would check in with me to make sure they were doing what I expected. They would quickly fix anything I didn't like, which happened only once. Tiling is a 3 day process. Laying the tile one day, grouting second day, sealing (which is quickly done) the last day. Coupled with the backsplash it was a 6 day process. The mosiac tile backsplash was a more complicated job. The tiler pain stakingly made sure everything matched up. Sometimes that meant taking small pieces of tile off the backing, custom cutting, and then applying. Communication is good. Besides the owner checking in with me, 2 other supervisors would personally check the work and follow up with phone calls to make sure the job was done to our satisfaction. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: We had the flooring in the kitchn, hallway and laundry room tiled. The kitchen backsplash was retiled with a detailed mosiac of travertine, marble, and glass. The final job was installing floor shoe trim. We removed the old flooring and old backsplash. We had purchased flooring tile and backsplash. Swartz's job was to install.

All work done on my house deserves an "A" rating. I gave this company a "B" grade for pricing due to the "Home Improvement 101" tutorial which, although very informative and interesting, added an additional $165.00 to the cost of the project. Although the work and attention to detail was superb, I would have been ok with a free estimate, knowing that their work, as described on Angie's List, was highly rated. But, I guess you get what you pay for, which I felt I certainly had gotten when my project was completed in a timely and very satisfactory way. Great clean-up too! All three men I spoke with and two who actually did the work (Philip and Mike) were gentlemen and behaved in a very professional manor. When Philip was done he came to my (other) home to complete the financial transaction. I appreciated the fact that he made it easy for me rather than having me go back to the my rental home to do this. I will be calling them again for another smallish project, and I like the fact that although they do huge remodeling, a smaller job is not beneath them. I feel that I was treated with the same respect that they would have given to me had I wanted to add an addition to my house.
Description of Work: The following repair due to water damage was made to my small, upstairs bedroom: Removed existing ceiling drywall and insulation, installed new fiberglass insulation and drywall, primed and applied one coat of paint on drywall patches, wall, and entire ceiling, and in addition removed a gutter and downspout thought to have possibly created the water problem to begin with.( my fingers are crossed here!) Phillip also matched the color of the 12 year old paint to my satisfaction, using a low-oder paint as I had requested.

Response from Swartz Builders
We all enjoyed working with this client, and we greatly appreciate the positive comments and great review. We do want to mention that the $165 charge that was referenced in the review was definitely for more than just a "building tutorial". From the initial conversation we had with this client at the outset, we stated that when we address existing water leaks, we bill for all labor & materials associated with the work to be performed, including all investigative work required to identify the problem and come up with a proposed solution. The reason we do this is because often times water leaks require a process of elimination, and sometimes that can take more time than initially anticipated. We never want to overcharge our clients, while at the same time we also want to ensure that we are fairly compensated for the time we spend working for them. This client asked if the charge for the investigative work required to identify the water leak would be applied to the overall bill if we did the actual repair, and we stated that would not be the case. Again, from many years of experience, we have learned that the best, most equitable way to address existing water leaks is to simply bill for every hour associated with the repair, from investigation to reconciliation. Sometimes the investigative process takes less than an hour, and sometimes it can take multiple trips over the course of several days, depending on the nature of the leak. This particular project was an existing water leak, and we applied our standard water leak repair billing practices to the work done. Again, we enjoyed working with this client and we are not seeking to make an issue where there is none, but we did feel it was important for future clients to be made aware of how we operate in regard to repairing existing water leaks. Hopefully this provides some additional clarity to the issue.

They were very good and very knowledgeable. You can definitely tell that they are very professional and very good at what they do. My husband talked about them highly. We ended up not doing the job because we were not ready to do the job.

Aaron from Swartz returned my call after I submitted a request for quotes for various projects needed both in and outside of my home. (Basement remodel, electrical work throughout, tile work and masonrywork on the exterior.) I am ready to hire and explained to Aaron that I was looking for the projects to be completed within 30 days. Aaron explained he was booked at least 60 days out. Aaron then offered his direct contacts for sub contracts he knew and trusted. He provided me with 5 contacts, I have had two out to my home for quotes and they were both professional and knowledgable about their respective trades. Aaron's assistance and professionalism was great and I will be sure to save his name and number for future projects.
Description of Work: Unfortunately Swartz was booked with other jobs and was not available to meet my project completion deadline. But the customer service by phone was very good.
