We signed a contract with KCL Building and Maintenance (Owner Chris Lee), on March 28 2019 to build an addition on our house, including giving a $30,000 deposit. In late June, 2019, we terminated our contract due to numerous breaches of the contract. Breaches include, but are not limited to Failure to provide monthly cost statements – KCL did not provide a single monthly statement per the contract. We were given “Cost Summary” document on June 20, 2019 which appears to contain numerous misstatements. KCL told us we would receive an updated Cost Summary, it was never sent to us. Failure to provide documentation supporting claimed payments – KCL have failed to provide ANY documentation supporting how the $30,000 deposit was spent (if it was actually spent in full). We have contacted some of the subcontractors, learning 3 of the 4 we personally contacted told us they were NOT paid as KCL had advised in the June 20, 2019 Cost Summary. In one instance, KCL claimed to have paid $25,000 to one subcontractor. That subcontractor has told us he was paid, in full, a sum of $13,800 ($11,200 LESS THAN KCL CLAIMS TO HAVE PAID). We have signed documentation supporting this. Failure to follow the “Change” process – KCL, spent, without our approval, $4,000 for “Design” fees on a change we requested pricing for but did not approve spending any money on. There are numerous other breaches, too many to list without making this review too long to read. We do not recommend KCL Building and Maintenance (Owner Chris Lee) for any building renovation or addition work. A consumer complaint with the State of Michigan Attorney General’s office has recently been filed. A complaint with LARA has been recently submitted.
