Home Building, General Remodeling
I was impressed from the start with Kenny's experience and knowledge of how to replace the foundation of our mud room/utility porch, which was here when we bought our home in 1967. It had obviously been added on to our 1905-built home at some time in the past and was sinking at the outside and separating from the house. He was willing for us to buy the materials and gave us a list of what he would need, thus he would not have to charge us for the time and money picking up the material and transporting it to our rural location.
To do the job he had to dig holes and pour cement under the porch, a hot and dirty job in the 90 degree heat. He also put in new floor joists and gave us a firm floor.
Once the foundation was stable, Ken and his helper removed the appliances from the porch, then began pulling the porch back up to the house. He was willing to take suggestions from my husband on how to do this to my husband's satisfaction. He then proceeded to practically rebuild the porch, ripping out old materials and hauling them away, placing new studs, rafters, and insulation. He built frames for three sliding windows and installed them very well, always preserving the steel siding that was on the outside of the house. He then installing the walls and ceiling using paneling I had purchased, fitting everything expertly. He put in new underlayment and laid new flooring. Lastly, he reframed the doorway and installed our new storm door. When all was done, Ken helped us to get our dryer reinstalled.
For the first few days of this project, Ken had a helper, Kevin. But after a few days, Kevin no longer showed up, so Kenny had to do all the labor himself. This caused the project to take longer than he had initially figured. This was not an important factor for us, as long as the job got done. We were quite pleased with the end result and felt we got good value for our money. (The above figure is for our entire cost, including materials.)
The only reason I gave Ken a B rather than an A for professionalism was because he and Kevin were smokers, which might bother some people. They did smoke outside, though, and made an effort to clean up their cigarette butts after working.
