Montell Construction

All went extremely well from the very beginning. From the initial consultation onward, everyone showed up on time. The construction crew chief always called ahead to say when they would arrive. In our case, they needed to tear off the old roof and install everything new. After the tear off, they stayed well after dark to finish the clean-up. I admire the dedication and perseverance of the work crew, who worked in snow and sub-zero temperatures. They had to time each stage of the work in between snow storms, and they succeeded. They finished on time, and did a great job. Everyone maintained a very professional demeanor, even under very harsh weather conditions. I strongly recommend them.

I filled out a form online detailing the project and gave them my contact information. A couple days later I received a call from one of the owners to schedule a time to come out and go over the estimate. Since I could only meet after work George was flexible in being able to meet me on my schedule. He went over all the options and gave me all the details of how the process works. This was helpful since it was my first time having roofing done. The original quote was a little higher than I expected so we negotiated down to $2,500 for the project. The shingles have a 50 year warranty and Montell's team came out a week later to do the work which was ahead of schedule. I would definitely go to them for work in the future.

Working with Montell Construction was a great experience. The quote was given by the owner not a pushy salesman. We were on a budget so he offered several options to help save us some money. Unlike some of their competitors, we felt very comfortable that the job would be done correctly; we were getting a quality product and that Montell would stand behind their work. The window installation was done in one day! The crew was friendly, courteous and professional. Everything looks fantastic and we would definitely use them again.

Came out on a timely basis to look at siding work and give a quote. Gave a verbal quote, then mentioned that I would like it in writing and to please email. Also mentioned the coupon for a $25 gas card for coming out and giving a quote and a 20% off coupon for a summer siding project, which he said was not problem. Had to bug them to eventually get a written quote to me, which was $150 more than the verbal quote. When I mentioned the verbal amount, they agreed to this. Never saw the $25 gas card despite email assurances that it had been sent out. Went with another local company that did it for 60% of Montell's quote.

The sales process was thorough and relaxed. Every effort was made to educate and meet the needs for my home at an affordable price. I was very pleased with the prompt service and professionalism during the installation process. Will and his crew were friendly, respectful and very conciensious. They went above and beyond to make sure that every detail was to my approval and final look was perfect. I would definitely recommend this company.

Met with the estimator to go over a new roof. The estimator insisted we needed all new decking without ever taking a look in our attic, just taking in info from other estimators we had (who said we don't need to re-deck). Pricing was within the range we were expecting but they use the high-pressure "sign this now and I'll knock off a few bucks" tactics that completely turned me off to the business. We were upfront with him and told him we were getting several estimates and were looking for straight-forward explanation of costs and services. He was very thorough describing what they provide and why but I see no reason the price would be jacked up just because I need time to decide. We went with another company who's costs and services were more in line with our expectations.

We first hired Montell Construction for an attic insulation job in early 2012, and were very pleased with the quality of their work. We hired them again for a major deck repair and gutter job, and again were very satisfied with their work. On a consistent basis, we found Montell to be very competent, professional, trustworthy, and fair. To be honest, the prices we were first quoted during the estimates seemed slightly on the high side, but now that time has passed and we can evaluate the durability of their work, we can genuinely say we feel the costs were well worth it (and probably not even on the high-side in the long run, especially given their willingness to put a "rush" on the job and the fact that our deck is quite large in comparison to most). Unlike many others, Montell performs thorough assessments when providing estimates, so there were no hidden fees or costly surprises. They also presented us with various short and long-term options, and took the time to explain the pros/cons of these options so we could have enough information to make good decisions. The Montell employees all have a no-nonsense work ethic so the jobs get done quickly, and they all seem to have pride in what they do so they end up doing great work. They gave us lots of upkeep and maintenance advice, treated us with respect, and it was clear they wanted to leave us with a safe house that we could enjoy for a long time. We have no reservations about recommending Montell to others, and will continue to hire them whenever we have big projects that need to be done.

Montell Construction met with us to describe what they would do and then gave us their price. They returned within a few weeks to do the job, and even though dodging a wet spring, they completed the work in a few days. Both the crew that worked on the roof and the crew on the deck were hardworking professionals who obviously knew their business. Clean up was handled each day and after they finished the job and left, there were very few signs of their being there. We are very pleased with the work.

I thought they were fair with their price and quality of the work was good, and they were prompt.

We met with George and he was very helpful discussing detail and working through exactly what we wanted. The price quoted was just way over what we expected. We don't know....maybe the price was right on target. After all, Montell was the first place we asked to come quote. We'll see. We decided not to go with them on price alone....I have no doubt they would do a great job.

overall rating is good it took some time for work to begin from estimate about 2 weeks but once the work got started it was done in 2 days using all the daylight hours i feel the price was a little high for the job but the work was done right and the work crew took time to ask questions on what i wanted done and the cleanup wasexellent

The company seems to be of a very high quality and it appeared that I had no issues at all..until the price came out. It seemed totally out of line. BUT.. if I would sign the contact right then they would offer me a discount. But the discounted price was only good while he was in my house. He would not even give me 24 hours to think about it or discuss the project with anyone. Also there was no paperwork left with me, not even for the price quote he gave me. When I said I could not make a decision at that time, he picked up his info and left like I had been a waste of his time. I do feel that this company would be and probably is a very good choice, I just could not afford the price they quoted.

The Montell team wanted to do it right and in the end it was done right. We had a number of adjustments and changes in scope as the full complexity of the job became known. This process was not without some stress but in the end it was right. It cost a little more than I had planned, it took a little longer than I had hoped (it was opening day dear season so I understand), there was a little colateral damage (they covered the cost), and a few things needed to be corrected (they promptly did so). The price was fair. I got 6 bids that ranged from 1/2 to almost double the original Montell price. One thing I'm sure of is that you have to hire someone you trust. The roof I got 16 years ago was nothing but trouble. They didn't meet code and cut corners wherever they could. I think this time it was done right.

Chad McNew met with me and spent about five hours at my house going through all the work and products to be used. I had gotten two other estimates and was impressed with his knowledge and how thoroughly he covered all the work and products to be used. There were three different crews completing the work and all of the workers were professional and courteous. The work was done timely. There were a few issues with communication between me, the operations manager and the crew , but when I brought it to Chad's attention he took care of it. The steps to the deck were not even when they built them and when I brought it to the foreman's attention (he wasn't there the day they were put in) he told me he'd already noticed and said it was not acceptable and they were going to do them over. They tore them out and redid them perfectly. All the workmanship was excellent....you can tell the crew took pride in their work. Although their price was the highest of three estimates I received they proved n the end you get what you pay for.

From the very beginning, we were happy with the company. They kept us informed of what they were doing and when the project would be completed. We are planning on using them again to re side our house.

Overall, our experience was very satisfactory. The only complaint we would have would be that communication was not always the best. The workers were not in a position to make changes or to correct anything that we might take issue with. We then would have to get in touch with the supervisor and have to wait for a call or a visit so that he could see what we were concerned about. More routine visits from the supervisor would have been good. We found that we needed to keep close watch on the workers to make sure they were doing exactly what we wanted. Make sure you put everything in writing that you want....leave nothing to verbal agreement.

They were very responsive to my questions and concerns. They have very competitive in their pricing. I was happy with their happy service.

George did a great job explaining the advantages of the windows and gave us a very fair price. Will was very professional for both the measurement phase and installation phase. The guys worked quickly and left no messes. Unfortunately one of the screens had a small hole in it, but they were out there the next day to replace it. As for the windows - they are great - it has been cooler when the sun was beating on them, and warmer this fall. My only suggestion is that Montell be more aware of the rebate situation - I almost missed my rebate deadline for the utility companies (30 days after install).

Day 1 Tore off old shingles and put on water shield. gutter edge tar paper. Then started to rain. Day 2 put new shingles and hip & ridge they was done when they said they would be.

Came out and gave us an estimate. Spent time asking what we wanted and we actually down sized the project based on the salesman's recommendations. They were able to start and complete the project quicker than promised. Crew did a very professional job and when done cleaned up and left no construction debris. After finished went over the work to make sure we were pleased. In fact we are looking at having them do additional work.

The first thing I noticed about George was that, although he's one of the company owners, he answers the phone when you call. From my first conversation with him over the phone I was really impressed with him. He has a warm sincere personality, a gentle nature, and a keen sense of humor. He showed up to view review the job and patiently waited while we ate dinner, making measurements and notes, and making a point that we should not rush our dinner. George's quote came in slighly higher, but within 10% of previous quotes, however, he was much more thorough, the products he offered were better quality, and he gave you that sense of trust that he stands behind what he sells and the work he does. I had heard horror stories about fast talking general contractors with big TV ads that source all their work to fly by night subs, but George's guys did all this work themselves. He has a job foreman that is on top of all the details and shows up every day, usually more than once, and George himself was out a few times during the project. The workers found a layer of cedar shake under some of our shingles unexpectedly, which apparently take a lot more labor to remove and a special tool. The crew ran to a local hardware to get the tools they hadn't realized to pack, and work continued without a grumble, and no additional charges were added to our final bill. These folks are fast, the craftsmanship is outstanding, they clean up after themselves, and I could not believe how fast the project was finished! George is extremely conscientious and was very eager to be sure we were completely satisfied before he would accept payment for the job. He speaks very highly of his crews and with good reason. They appreciate him because he appreciates them. He understands the products he sells and won't handle anything that isn't proven out or covered by a really great warranty. (He also handles warranty claims directly, no "call the manufacturer" cop outs, plus his family's been in business for years, and they aren't going anywhere!) Since we were so impressed with the work he did last October, we called Montell back to quote a new deck, and new windows and patio door for a 3-season porch. Again, George had wonderful suggestions and quality products to offer. He could not find a stock door to fit our porch, so he had a custom door made and took the additional cost out of his margin. We were overwhelmed when the door showed up at how beautiful it looked! He even asked them to match the old oak of our entry door as closely as possible! Since we have an old farmhouse, the door did not exactly fit squarely into the opening left by the old, rotten door. George has a window and door specialist named Will that is an artist who has honed his craft. He rubbed his chin for a while figuring out how to put a square door into a quadrilateral opening and make it look good. He finished it out with wood and drywall inside and wrapped and finished the outside for a spectacular result! We were amazed, there's no other way to say it. They are all very, very talented guys. The two young men who built the deck, John and his apprentice were amazing to watch. The attention to details, the smoothing of joints, the fit and finish are top notch! 45 degree mitred corners are fit perfectly and sanded to a nearly seemless joint. The building inspector who showed up to approve the deck afterward was running his hands along it saying someone really taught those boys how to build! Plus they were so sweet and polite and cleaned up after themselves too. All George's guys are the kind you feel like inviting inside for supper, and you feel inclined to trust them with your most valuable physical possession; your home. On an additional side note, Montell had been running an advertised special that if you contracted a deck, they gave away a free smoker grill. We mentioned to George that our garage door needed replacement, so he offered to substitute the grill for a garage door! When they showed up with a 17' insulated, top quality garage door, we were totally stunned and happy with the deal! You really get the feeling these folks will go the extra mile to make you happy. They're lightning fast, exceptionally talented, show up on time, and clean up after themselves. Having hired good and bad contractors in the past, I can honestly say Montell blows them all away. They probably won't be the lowest quote you get, but you can rest assured you will get more than you pay for and save money and frustration in the end. I would recommend Montell to anyone and everyone I know. I was just telling a colleague of mine that if every business owner was like George, we wouldn't need a Better Business Bureau! We are still very much in love with our beautiful roof, siding, windows, doors, and deck and don't regret a single dime spent with Montell Construction.

I called for an estimate on roofing. Since I saw that they also did siding I asked them for an estimate on that. I also asked whether they serviced my area, which they said they did. While setting up the appointment for the estimate I explained when I was available and asked if they serviced my area. They learned that my wife would not be there and explained that they would like both of us to be there. They said they could accommodate us by coming on the weekend, which is appreciated. But the fact is my wife is too busy to deal with attending an estimate, and we have opposite schedules even when we aren't busy. I made the latter fact known. We went ahead and scheduled an appointment for an estimate for 10 a.m. the next day (also appreciated). At approximately 8 a.m. the day of the estimate I received a message from the person who was going to do the estimation which said it was their busy season and that the did not want an estimate made without my wife there. I called back and reiterated our busy and opposite schedules. While he did want to reschedule I opted to pass and said that I will end my business relationship with Montell Construction. Overall, I am disappointed that they wouldn't even come out and give me an estimate. I also didn't appreciated the unstated undertone that they didn't want to waste their time with me. They should have been more direct when I first called and not even scheduled the estimate to begin with. I was initially impressed with Montell Construction's good reviews and the owner's responsiveness to reviews made on Angie's List. I also wanted to begin cultivating relationships with service providers up in the Grand Rapids area since we would like to relocate there after I complete law school. While I understand they are busy and they don't want to waste their time (who does) I wish they would understand they are in a people business and as such they can't always do everything on their own terms. The actual work is one thing, but here we're talking about an estimate.

When I contacted Montell for an estimate, they worked with me in order to set the appointment to fit my schedule. The salesman arrived on time and was extremely personable, knowledgeable and professional. He provided me with an estimate that mirrored my needs. I would recommend this company to anyone who is in need of home improvement.
