Bob and his team were great -- friendly, efficient, professional. He gave me a very reasonable price and straightforward recommendations for most cost effective solutions. The team was neat when i was there during the job, and everything looks great and well-cleaned up at the end. The house walls and woodwork look great. I will definitely find him for a next project!

It went great. Quote process was straightforward and reasonable. Scheduling was easy. I was worried about them working in the stairwell, however, they cleaned up at the end of each day so it was never an issue, not even with our toddler running around. The crew was nice, professional, punctual. The rooms look great, I can't believe we didn't do this years ago when we bought the house.

We contacted Tree City in February to obtain an estimate on our painting job. Bob Bauer, the owner. and his employee Phil, came to our home shortly after our call. He and Phil reviewed the work we wanted done, noted wall fixes that needed attention, and queried us on what we wanted. He left a packet of materials about his company, including a copy of his liability insurance. We received the estimate, written up on a formal proposal, within a few days. The proposal outlined all the services we asked for and gave us the price. None of the other three companies provided this level of detail in their estimates. Prices ranged from $4,500 to $1,900. Tree City's price was slightly higher than one other quote, but we went with them because they would be using multiple painters and we thought that would be advantageous since we had a lot of heavy furniture that needed to be moved around. The painters arrived March 12 and prepared the rooms for painting using many drop cloths and plastic covers. They also did wall and ceiling repairs. They started and completed the painting over the next three weekdays. All the painters were very polite and professional throughout the four days they were in our home. They arrived when they said they would, cleaned up after themselves, and other than nicely painted walls and ceilings, left no traces that they had been in the house. The painting was done superbly with crisp trim, ceiling, and wall lines. This was my first professional paint job in forty years and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and timeliness of the work. Bob Bauer and his crew were excellent and we would use them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Tree City painted our main living area with walls as high as 16 feet, repaired and painted the 8 foot ceiling in our lower level, and painted ceiling and walls in one bedroom/office.

When they came for the quote, they stressed that their emphasis was on details and quality, assuring customer satisfaction. This proved true at first, but went downhill. As time went on, one of the workers came for irregular, short periods of time only. I understand there were some personal issues going on, and the other guy was very reliable, so we didn't really worry too much. The job ended up taking several days longer than quoted. We did change our mind on one color and they were good about re-painting (which of course we gladly paid for), but the rest of the job had already gone over. As time went on, the lines were not as crisp, the spackling and hole filling were not as thorough, and drips and marks could be found. Paint was found on objects and some places around the house that did not get cleaned up. There were some little places where the paint didn't completely cover, or that were missed entirely. They told us that they would be happy to fix anything we found - and we are not picky people! - but it soon became clear that wasn't really the case. We understand the nature of painting and that it is nowhere near perfect, and in the evenings we would look around and debate which things were worth pointing out and which to just leave as they were. We pointed out only the things that were obvious or problematic. One worker was happy to help, but the other (the owner) actually said, "If you're going to be this picky, we are going to have a problem!" After repeatedly saying they wanted to get every detail right at the beginning of the process and us only picking and choosing the things that really needed attention, we were surprised by this statement and attitude. We were left with a sour taste and some details around the house where we still look and shake our heads. It's fine, but definitely not great or anything like what they came in saying.

This review was left 12/26/2014 for a job we performed over one year and nine months ago. (March 15th, 2013) When they came for the quote, they stressed that their emphasis was on details and quality, assuring customer satisfaction. This proved true at first, but went downhill. As time went on, one of the workers came for irregular, short periods of time only. I understand there were some personal issues going on. Our emphasis was on being very detailed oriented and the best possible quality for the agreed upon services and price. The project never ‘Went Downhill”. The reason one worker (Myself, the Owner) came for irregular, short periods of time is because I was driving to appointments with my older brother during his treatment for esophageal cancer. My brother passed March 22 of this year. We did change our mind on one color and they were good about re-painting (which of course we gladly paid for), but the rest of the job had already gone over . . . Correct.. They changed there mind about the Dining room color after is was completed. We gladly recoated the dining room again including all paint for $90.00. ($100 less Angie’s List 10% discount.) I do not know what ‘The rest of the job had already gone over” means. Time? Cost? The amount of time redecorating takes can vary and the pricing was firm in a written and signed proposal. All work was completed in a timely manner. As time went on, the lines were not as crisp, the spackling and hole filling were not as thorough, and drips and marks could be found. Paint was found on objects and some places around the house that did not get cleaned up. There were some little places where the paint didn't completely cover, or that were missed entirely. Not true. This is coming out of nowhere. We cleaned up every day and they had an opportunity daily at anytime to point anything out they didn’t like throughout the entire course of the project up to and after completion. Paint ‘On object’s?” Drips? “Not cleaned up?” Not true. Sometimes customers think the last person to paint (and there where many, many before us at this home) caused every imperfection. We try our very best to address issues that existed before with the painted surfaces. They told us that they would be happy to fix anything we found - and we are not picky people! - but it soon became clear that wasn't really the case . . . I would not say that [member name removed] and her partner are picky. You want what you pay for. They both had the opportunity to point out ANYTHING they want reworked at anytime the entire duration of the project.. My feeling reflecting back almost 2 years on is that this is to do with there request to paint over the kitchen wallpaper. The finish results of painted wallpaper wall areas no matter how much preparation is negligible. It states in the signed proposal dated 3/2/2013 “Application of an oil-based prime coater/sealer to all kitchen wallpaper.” (Per homeowner’s request.) They did not want to incur the cost of removal of the wallpaper, residual glue and associated wall repairs. I did not know why, perhaps they were planning on selling and did not want to have the expense. I did what was agreed upon. . . . .(the owner) actually said, "If you're going to be this picky, we are going to have a problem!" Yes, but certainly not in the manner she states, but I politely pointed out the fact that painted wallpaper can only look as good as we can attempt to make it. (Patching bubbles, seams, tears, etc after prime coating, not removal.) I never, ever take a condescending tone with my clients, if anything exactly the opposite. Ask anyone who knows me. I take great pride in my business and satisfied customers. After repeatedly saying they wanted to get every detail right at the beginning of the process and us only picking and choosing the things that really needed attention, we were surprised by this statement and attitude . . . . That is a lie. In my written proposal it states: “ALL WORK GUARANTEED TO BE FREE FROM DEFECT ONE YEAR FROM DATE OF COMPLETION.” I would never leave a homeowner angry with my work. Why did they not call me if there was a perceived problem? Why a Christmas gift the day after Christmas (12/26/2014) almost 2 years later of a negative online review? Buyer’s Remorse? Also to be correct it was not 4 rooms. It was (per the contract in front of me) Main entryway two-story foyer / stairway to second level / second level hallway / Great Room / Powder room / Laundry Room / Kitchen and first level office: All ceiling, wall areas and woodwork/trim (all room entry and closet doors, door casings, stairway spindles, great room double door set / attached side panel doors / all door casings / upper foyer window / fireplace trim / laundry room window and all baseboard moldings. Application of two (2) or more finish paint coats as needed for proper coverage. The contact as written and agreed upon (which is the same for all my clients) leave them holding a high balance due, in this case $1,300.00 upon day of completion. If they were not completely satisfied why did you pay me? If you are so distraught as to leave a review like this at this time why did you not contact me? I stated to you when we were leaving that if you see ANYTHING you are not 100% satisfied with just please tell me and we will always make it right. I finish each and every job with these words. I remember now also installing a flat screen television with much difficulty because of the poor mounting. I also remember taking down and re-hanging a brand new light fixture in the two story foyer. It was all thank you’s and smiles when we left and I had not heard anything bad about the job until this ill-timed review. The day we completed [member name removed] was on the phone with someone with a final punch list that we completed immediately prior to payment. We though it awkward that we were receiving punch list instructions via [member name removed] via whoever was on the phone. After 25 years it has not happened before or since in this manner. Literally walking with the homeowner around the house taking direction from someone on the phone that is not present. We were left with a sour taste and some details around the house where we still look and shake our heads. It's fine, but definitely not great or anything like what they came in saying. I reached out to [member name removed] on email and the phone to talk about this review and what I can to appease her 2 years later. I have not had a response. Also she did receive my substantial ‘Angie’s List’ discount of 10% off all work. This leaves me scratching my head in disbelief. I would encourage potential customers to call the local Ann Arbor paint stores (Anderson’s, Sherwin-Williams) for a reference as to my quality and integrity or read my 4 pages of positive Angie’s List reviews. I can also provide recent local references.

Bob and his crew did a great job painting several rooms in my newly purchased home! The work was high quality. The schedule was tight, yet they were able to accommodate other contractors and complete the job ahead of schedule. They were very careful with newly refinished wood floors and carpet, and even cleaned the light fixtures and windows around the cathedral ceiling! I would hire Bob and his team again, no question.

Bob and his crew spent a couple weeks painting my 2-story great room (including the 20+ ft high tray ceiling!), as well as took my doors, trim, and foyer stair risers from dated stained look to a sharp white. Completely transformed the look of my living areas. Great attention to detail. Worked around my family and made sure everything was always cleaned up a the end of the day. Used high quality paint. Great working with Tree City and will hire again!

Came in on short notice to repair drywall on walls and ceiling in a kitchen remodel where two small closet walls had been removed. Nice quality of work and very reasonably priced. Also took time to match the knockdown finish of the ceiling walls so that it all will blend seamlessly once painted.

I contacted Bob for an estimate and he responded quickly by telephone and email. He was able to come by the same day we talked for the estimate, which he provided via phone and then also in detail via email. They started the job the very next day and, in spite of the multiple coats necessary due to the deeply colored wall, the job was done remarkably quickly and is quality work. Bob and his team were professional, very helpful and I'm happy to recommend them.
Description of Work: New retail space (including doors and trim) was painted mainly in white, with one long wall a very deep color (approx 750 sq ft) . The concrete floor was painted with a ceramic-type coating, the ceiling tiles were touched up and the warehouse window glazing was cleaned up and painted. All necessary repairs were made to the drywall, stain blocker and caulk was applied where needed.

Phil came over the Saturday after we closed to take a look at the house and discuss what we wanted to do. Bob sent us a quote the next day in writing for us to look at. My husband and I asked several questions over the next few days and decided to hire them. They started the job about a week later. On the first day, Bob said he would get samples up for us to look at. We had already done that ourselves, so they got started right away. I asked them to do two specific rooms first, because we were getting furniture delivered a few days later. Bob said "Sure, we can paint in whatever order you want." We stayed in contact with Bob through both email and phone during the entire job. Several people (including our movers and blinds guy) have stated that they paint was done really well. The paint had low odor, so it was easy to be around immeadiatly after painting. They used Pittsburg Paints, so I selected colors from that company, but they will color match any sample you have. They protected our floor and countertops with drop clothes. I have been very happy and will call them again, when we paint the rest of the rooms in the house.
Description of Work: Bob and Phil painted 8 rooms, the hallways, and the stairwell at our new house. Bob answered any questions we had in a timely manner, and completed the painting in less than 8 days. The paint and supplies were included in the price. Bob told us he would come back and do touch ups after we moved in, if needed. They left the extra paint in the basement for us, as well.

It looks gorgeous and Bob and his team were very helpful (suggesting a color consultant, which I would not have thought of but was very useful) and very good about the final details that needed retouching and re-doing even after we had paid. I changed my mind about a color once I saw it on the walls and there were some other small changes that he did very soon after the main job was done and with the same level of attention. It was clear that they would make sure I was happy with the job and indeed I'm delighted with it. It's not cheap, but I had other quotes from other painting companies and this was very competitive and Bob is particularly nice to work with. I especially liked that he is on the job site himself, which is not always the case with other companies.

The initial meetings with Bob went well. He was very friendly and courteous as other reviewers have said. The work was done in two days, right before I went out of town for the holidays. I had noticed a few things that were amiss when walking through the condo after the work was done. They had forgot to caulk around a duct, which was probably a simple oversight. However, the trim work they did was very sloppy. The trim they installed was the wrong thickness, so it was obvious that it was out of place. Also, the trim was not properly installed, meaning that the corner was not cut such that the pieces met at a 45 degree angle. Instead, they were fit together one over the other and then caulked to make it look continuous (it doesn't look continuous). I emailed Bob after the holidays and he called me back within an hour and offered me $50 or to come fix everything. He said it would probably take a few days to get everything done, which seemed like an over-estimate to me, but we agreed to meet the day after next so he and his team could fix things up. Now, this is when things went south. Within 10 minutes, Bob called me back and said he wouldn't be able to come and fix the mistakes due to personal problems. He told me that I could leave negative feedback (which I'm doing), or sue him (I'm not that vindictive), or do whatever I had to do, but he was done. He literally said that several times, "I'm done." Based on our phone conversation, it seems like this is not the best time for Bob. This is unfortunate because he was extremely nice and professional up until this point and I do wish him and his family the best. However, I sadly cannot recommend Tree City Painting to anyone at this time.

From our Client: “Called up Bob to paint my 900 sq. ft. condo (walls only) and do a little trim and drywall work.” “The trim they installed was the wrong thickness, so it was obvious that it was out of place. Also, the trim was not properly installed, meaning that the corner was not cut such that the pieces met at a 45 degree angle. Instead, they were fit together one over the other and then caulked to make it look continuous (it doesn't look continuous).” Response from Bob Bauer, Owner & Job-Site Foreman: To preface my response: The interior of this apartment was in quite bad condition reflecting a common problem in today’s housing market of decorating neglect and sub-standard construction when initially built. The unit literally looked as if it was built with absolutely no quality controls of any kind. As professional painting contractors we are in awe of the lack of builder pride in much of today’s construction that we see unfortunately all too frequently. And we as painting professionals are gladly challenged daily to achieve decorating perfection, which in most instances is possible . . . . Six weeks ago before this negative review my company refinished the entire lower level 900’ sq. ft. one bedroom unit to the best it has ever looked. All textured wall areas AND TRIM: (Main entryway and all hallways, living room and attached dining area, kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, bedroom and closet interiors . . . .Woodwork/trim: main entry, room entry and closet doors, laundry room doors (all-sides), door casings, window trim, sills and surrounds, baseboard moldings and a kitchen ceiling that was not included in the original estimate. The kitchen ceiling and walls were cleaned of accumulated grease before refinishing. The kitchen backsplash was caulked in by the builder or prior owner with a non-paintable silicone caulk. We removed all this caulking and replaced it with a paintable caulk so we could achieve perfect painted lines at these joints. Not one caulked surface in the kitchen since construction: Where kitchen cabinets meet soffits, kitchen countertop/backsplashes and kitchen baseboard/wall joints. We recaulked the kitchen completely X 2 along with every separation or void in the entire unit including all door casing/wall joints, baseboard molding/wall joints, the bathroom vanity/wall joints, bathroom backsplashes and the top of the fiberglass shower stall unit adjoining the wall. All window trim was caulked. I want to point out that the entire unit when first ‘builder painted’ was never caulked, not one inch. The laundry room was completely repaired from our removal of a lot of miscellaneous old shelving hardware per the homeowner and repaired. All wall damage throughout the apartment (substantial) was repaired. All painted surfaces throughout the unit were thoroughly and correctly painted and refinished to the best of our ability within the scope of the proposal and pricing. ($1,200.00 total including all labor, sundry items, primer and finish paints, which were appx. $250.00). We completed the project in a timely manner as a first priority on my schedule because the owner wanted to rent it out ASAP. We left the exact finish paint for future touch-ups. We also replaced and repaired a missing section of drywall in the bathroom ceiling (8” X 12’) by the vent fan, caulked the fan edges and replaced and repaired the bedroom corner drywall which the homeowner referenced negatively in his review that led to his total unhappiness with my company. The lower corner of two adjoining walls were rotted away from moisture intrusion up 12 inches or so from the flooring with no baseboards attached. It was obvious from the moisture and discoloration that it had been this way for some amount of time. When we opened it up on day one to replace the failing drywall we discovered that it initially was not framed in properly when constructed and major (not quoted) structural repairs needed to be made to the wood framing to make the area 'perfect'. The wood framing was installed in a way that you could not recess the thinnest of drywall enough to get it perfectly even, which we tried our best to do. The trim that was replaced was the exact same thickness and profile of the existing base. Short of tearing out the entire lower corner down to and including framing we had our hands tied by the initial shoddy construction. My company worked to the best of our ability on this area to make it look good and I apologize if he is not happy. I sincerely doubt he would have wanted the increased cost to tear this all out and basically start from scratch. The bedroom wall structural repairs (an unknown at time of quote) was outside the scope of the proposal. I should have asked him if he wanted me to perform this extra work and I fault myself for not doing so. He made me aware it was a rental and his first priority seemed to be pricing. Again, given the flawed construction of this apartment I am confident that we did all we could with this particular wall repair. To be fair it looked great after completion for what we encountered. The bedroom was also a ‘Bright Red’ which took multiple paint coats to achieve the off-white the homeowner wanted. I have never ever added an additional price for any of the miscellaneous extras that we perform on each and every job. Any major alterations to a proposal have to be made in writing and agreed upon. This was a major alteration of the initial, very competitive quote. I am sorry to have any homeowner or client unhappy with my company or the quality of my work. I have no negative feelings for this homeowner, I am keenly aware that quality, pricing and finish results are subjected to each ones personal view. I always wish a homeowner truly realized how much hard work goes into a renovation such as this. This was by no means a small undertaking refinishing this apartment. I am confident that this unit was one of the better decorated in his building when we were done. At project completion I met with Rob, went over all the details of his renovation and then received final payment. He stated that he was very pleased. I was startled to receive his email and then read this review after so much time had passed. I take pride in being a life-long Ann Arbor area resident and business owner and have strived daily to always do the right thing in business. I am a state licensed builder for over 20 years with not one complaint in my file and a past member of the Home Builder’s Association of Washtenaw County. My wife and I also own a well respected family hair salon in Ann Arbor. I successfully complete painting projects throughout the community on an almost daily basis. My goal is to make customers happy and have them place their trust in me. I still consider being an honest, skilled and trustworthy painter to be a respectable profession. One negative review really does sting and hurts my pride a lot. From the client: “He told me that I could leave negative feedback (which I'm doing), or sue him (I'm not that vindictive), or do whatever I had to do, but he was done. He literally said that several times, "I'm done." My response: I did my very best and this review was my reward. Yes, I am done with giving away free labor to unappreciative people, I did so much more for this person and his home than he can or will ever comprehend. Six weeks after proper completion and a one minute phone call demanding something from me that I am not responsible for . . . within an hour I receive this feedback. I doubt anyone could have made him totally happy; it is mystery to me why it is this way at times these days. I asked for no up front money, only pay us when you are happy and we are done. If he was not happy please tell me and do not pay me. That is why it is total payment in full upon proper completion (as in this job) or a final substantial draw payment in every contract I sign. I let you hold all the leverage until we are completed to your satisfaction. Yes, I am done with this client. I am copying my comments to and emailing them to him. I apologize that you were not satisfied. I am offering to make a donation to any charity, program or shelter of your choice in both our names or refund you directly $300.00 (25% of the job cost) in hopes of correcting your perceived failings on my part if you would like. I am an honest man. Life is short and I have worked diligently to be the best in my craft. It seems almost impossible at times to achieve the desired level of customer service and complete perfection demanded of our clients, but we do our level best on each and every project to do just that. We really do. Sincerely, -Bob Robert Bauer, Owner Tree City Painting Company Please do read all my ‘Angie’s List’ comments. I have just recently joined and look forward to my customers adding more positive reviews.

Bob and his team (Phil & Andy) do remarkable work. They are professional, courteous, and accommodating. This is the second time they have painted for us. The first time was in our old home and they did an outstanding job. I hired them again without competing quotes for our new home because they are just that good. One thing to note about Bob... he under-promises and over-delivers every time. It's nice to know that I'll never have to worry about finding a painting contractor again. I can recommend Tree City without hesitation.
Description of Work: Tree City painted my entire first floor and the hallway of the second floor. They will be returning soon to complete the painting upstairs.

These guys were pretty great, it took them about a week to finish. Bob was very courteous to my wife, who was unfamiliar with how painting a house works, so he patiently explained the process to her. He showed up on time to do the estimate and we were surprised at how cheap it was relative to other estimates we had taken, so at first I thought maybe it was a bit too good to be true. The way it worked for us is we put down a deposit of $600 when they started the work, then they showed up promptly at 9am with a crew of 4. While 3 of them got started the 4th went to get the paint supplies. They set up a "home base" in my garage and got to work every day. Bob had recommended that instead of going with the brand of paint we selected to computer match with a brand he recommended (PPG), which saved us some money. I am not an expert on paint though, so I just deferred to his expertise. Over the course of the week the team painted the house. On some days there'd be only 2, and on some days 4 would show up, so there was a kind of rotation going on throughout the week. Since I work from home I asked them to finish one room first so that I could have a place to work while they completed the house, which they had no problems doing. Before they left every day they told me when they were planning on showing up the next day and what rooms they would be working on, which was great so I could shuffle around things from room to room. They also cleaned up every day before leaving, so the dropdown cloths and all the other stuff they used to cover things in the house weren't in our way when they weren't around. Overall his crew was really professional, they were speedy and quiet and answered all my dumb questions about paint. You can really tell that these guys really care about their craft, and my house looks great. I originally asked for them to seal my garage floor too, but Bob recommended I wait at least 6 months for the new concrete to finish setting. I will certainly hire them again to finish off the garage and probably seal up my basement floor as well.

Bob gave me a quick quote and LOTS of information about the products and techniques used by his company. Bob and Phil came to work promptly and got the job done according to schedule. They were incredibly patient with my indecision when it came to choosing paint colors! When a little problem came up, they made haste to fix it. And they do it all in a good-natured manner.
Description of Work: I am actually referring to TWO projects that Tree City completed for me. They painted the main floor (living/dining room, hallway, kitchen, family room) of my home - walls, ceiling, trim, doors - stairwell, upstairs hallway and master bedroom (walls, ceiling, trim, doors).
