English Gardens is Ann Arbor's and Metro Detroit's best source for plants, flowers and accessories to decorate your home and garden. The family-owned business was founded in 1954 and currently operates a seven stores and a full-service landscape company offering design, installation and maintenance. Most stores operate a full-service florist.
I initially searched Angie's List to find a contractor to do some landscaping for my home. Although I decided not to use English Gardens to do my landscape work because they charged a fee to do an estimate and there were a lot of other contractors out there that would come and do a free estimate, I did do some shopping at their store. It is setup to handle most landscaping and gardening needs. Although their prices are a bit high, the knowledge of their workers made up for that. They were able to help out more than your average salesman at Home Depot or Lowe's. Also they have items for your lawn or garden that are hard to find in any local hardware store or most nurseries.
Description of Work: Sold goods for landscaping.

Description of Work: They were quick to ask me if I needed help and show me the location to buy some Christmas trimmings. I have used them before for purchase of garden pest control. They were always very helpful. This review is only for the Ann Arbor store.

The experience with them was a little complicated. It was part positive and part negative. Overall they did a good job but there were definitely a few hiccups. The woman that I dealt with designed the landscaping for me. She did a nice design. She ultimately did put in some plantings that were not compatible with all the other trees. I have a years warranty on the plant. So I'll see if they live till next year. So far they look okay. One of the things that happened was, they put the plants in during the heat of the summer. There were about ten plants that died which weren't a problem because they replaced those. They put in some stones and they also put in some polymerized sand in between. I just emailed the company and they're going to send someone out this week to have a look at that, because some of it didn't harden like it was supposed to. There were some spaces that weren't showed in. So there were little things which didn't go well. So far they haven't been responding super quick but they are responding. It's a little bit frustrating. They really had high ratings on Angie's list and that's why I went with them. They were probably in the ball park with regard to price. It was average. I'm not sure if I would go with them again or recommend them. I would probably not go with them again and I would find someone else better to do the job. One of the plants that they replaced didn't match the other one because it was a different dry area or something like that. So I'm going to have them look at that today too or whenever they come out this week. They were pretty much punctual. I would probably go with a smaller company the next time. I will probably not use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used English Gardens for landscaping. I last used their services in July. They put in landscaping for me.

We spent about $5000 to $7000 for everything. They are very clear in pointing out exactly what everything costs and exactly what we are going to get and we pretty much get what they say we are going to get. They tell us when they are going to be here and they are and if they are late they tell us why. We have had work done for cheaper with other places, but it has not gone as well.
Description of Work: We used English Gardens in 2010 and they put in a paver patio and screening trees. We are going to use them again in the next few weeks.

They were really good. Valerie was really great with the design. They were very knowledgeable. They were willing to work on our budget; they didn't try to oversell. When all the work was said and done, they came back and inspected things. When we felt that something needed to be corrected, they would take a look and correct it within a few weeks. They were very professional. We really liked them a lot. We will probably use them for something in the future.
Description of Work: They did some landscaping repair. Part of the repair included adding some boulders.

We wanted a very specific area of our yard repaired. So, we called them for a quote. They were very knowledgeable. They gave us very specific information on what we wanted, as well as, provided additional information about what they could do. So, we decided to use them for the job. The lady, who came out, quoted a ballpark price and was kind enough to make design suggestions for our yard. She was able to provide pictures of the designs she had done in the past. Also, she worked with us with ballpark figure that we had in mind. She was very willing to work with us. This company has been good so far. We will be calling them for the job.
Description of Work: We got a quote from English Gardens for landscaping, two months ago.

From the initial phone call to the clean up after the job was through, I was very impressed with the professionalism and the follow-through. They are committed to keeping me happy and have made me a repeat customer! Michael Southgate always returns calls, he listens to our needs, and continually offers tips for keeping our landscaping looking great (reminds me to fertilize and teaches me how to prune my new roses). He was on site during installation (which took about 2 days), and made sure I was happy with the progress. We are now working on plans for the back of our house, adding new window wells to let more light into the basement, improving drainage, and of course new plantings. I especially like how they offer suggestions for updates and improvements that I haven't considered, but are also respectful of my budget, and THEY DON'T TRY TO OVERSELL. I feel like I get more than I expected without blowing the budget.
Description of Work: We worked with Landscape Architect Michael Southgate (I'm sure they have several), to draw up landscape designs ($375, which was subsequently credited to the cost of installation), and then install new landscaping for the front of our house. This included tearing out 20+ year-old overgrown shrubs, salvaging and relocating many perennials, and completely re-designing the layout and installing new shrubs, perennials and decorative stones. The design perfectly complements the style of our house (a garrison colonial), yet is updated, a little bit formal and incorporates low maintenance plants. After we were presented with the plans, we asked about how we could save on cost (another home improvement project had sprung up). We were offered several options, including removing old plants and debris and planting some of the new plants ourselves (they would deliver all the materials). We elected to do the destruction ourselves, while relying on the professionals to plant the new stuff.

The plants were huge and certified healthy. They were planted correctly with great care. The layout was exactly as discussed. The surprise was the extra beauty of the walkway CURVING through the plants! I hadn't thought of that and it just makes the garden. Solid and expertly installed too!!! I came home as they were finishing. Each person was polite, well educated and knew about what was going on. Our condo hires drop outs and unskilled people. The difference is unreal. Professional workers would save having to replant over and over. All the English Garden stock is thriving. My garden is paradise. I could not get anything to grow, but these folks turned my clay mud patio area into a great pleasure for me last year, and it's still perfect and growing.
Description of Work: Plantings, slate walkway, add several inches of good soil and cover all with dark wood chip mulch.
