Ann Arbor Hardwoods

I hired AA Hardwoods a few years back to refinish original oak floors as well as original baseboards and window casings in my 1930s house. Some of the baseboards were painted (probably many times over the decades), and the window casings were in ROUGH shape. Michael and his team are some of the most professional contractors we’ve hired. Michael was great about realistic about expectations, given that the pieces had been in place for 85 years. He warned that some pieces might break or not be salvageable. But he was amazingly careful and saved I think all of the original parts with some small exceptions. The floors and all the other trim work look awesome. At one point when one of Michael’s staff was putting the trim in, I noticed that one piece was out of order. Michael came personally and fixed it with no problem. They did spend more time on the project than originally expected, and so were over budget by a bit. Michael was kind enough to split the overages. I would definitely work with them again, and in fact, I have a new project, which is what reminded me to write this review. Definitely recommend!

Work was done as promised, quickly, professionally, and with great care and attention to detail. The crew was amazing, dust was kept to a minimum, very little odor and drying time was very fast! We were impressed with the responsiveness and communication throughout the process. Most importantly we love the look of our new floors!

The work went very well. The sanding was very even. The finish is good - the color is less yellow than the flooring in the rest of my house.

Michael is up front and honest. He provided information during our initial phone conversation about his business and focus on quality. He arrived on time and I was super impressed with his knowledge, estimating software and process, and love of his craft. I had only contacted NWFA members or certified professionals and had a list of prepared questions and Michael answered them before I had to ask. When he asked if I had any remaining questions I knew any questions I had about him making sure the floor will be done according to high standards were unnecessary - he clearly cares about the quality of work and the entire process. He provided an estimate before he left my house and was actually the lowest of the 4 companies I had come out by a couple hundred dollars. I was all set to select Ann Arbor Hardwoods for the project until I discovered last minute that an old family friend now owned a Hardwood floor company and I decided to use his company. When the wood for my floor was delivered, the man from the Hardwood supplier was talking to me about my project and I mentioned that I was all set to select Ann Arbor Hardwoods until I discovered the coincidence with the friend's company. The hardwood delivery man was very familiar with Michael's work - he said he does absolutely beautiful work, to exacting standards. To know that his level of quality can be provided at a cost competitive to other hardwood floor companies that specialize in finished "on premises" hardwood is amazing.

Everyone I know that has had floors refinished complain about all the dust the process generated. I was very pleasantly surprised that Michael's sanding resulted in a very little dust! I am sure it is a combination of their equipment and process. Once the sanding was complete, they applied a number of samples in an area so we could choose a color. They ultimately custom mixed a very dark stain for us. The actual staining process was challenging due to the dark color. Michael assured me during the quotation process that he does quality work and that he will do whatever it takes to make sure we are happy in the end. In the end, he went above and beyond what I believe most other flooring contractors would do to make sure we were happy with the work. The stain color looks absolutely awesome in our house. We have had numerous compliments on how the floors look. We are looking at doing our stairs and will be contacting Michael.

I was pleased with the work, I thought it was a little high but I was pleased with the work. They were supposed to finish up some stuff that they promised me they were gonna finish. This was last year, that's primarily due to my fault but when I called them to get it done recently and you know I understand that it was my fault cause I didn't call them in a timely fashion but when I called them to get it done and even if I was gonna pay for it, it's been hard to get them to contact me. There was some little holes in the floor where they might have put in some cable wires through and I wanted them plugged cause my wife didn't like them. They're extremely good. They'll be there when they say they're gonna be there if there is any changes they'll communicate it to you.

It was a simple project and they did great.

Amazing feels like we moved into new house!

Michael and his crew are amazing. They came in and knocked out the entire project in a couple days. They were professional and fast. I left a key with them to get into the house, and I was a little worried about that, but his crew are all complete professionals. Michael helped me pick out styles and color and he offered professional advice on matching everything up. I will recommend them to anyone I know.

Mike was very easy to work with. From the initial contact via email to the onsite estimate. He was quick to respond and was willing to work within my schedule (within reason) to schedule the appointment. I had them fill in a hole in my floor that was left from removing my fireplace and screen and refinish the entire room. The two guys that did the work were very polite and made sure everything was cleaned up before hand. The dustless system they use is amazing. No plastic or any other barriers had to be hung, nor did I need to cover anything in the attaching rooms. There was no dust or sawdust anywhere in my house when they were done. I'm looking forward to working with Mike and his team again this winter when we will be adding wood to our walls to create an inlay to frame in our TV.

All I asked was for a call to discuss refinishing a hardwood flow in my home. I called and was not able to leave a message because the mailbox was full. The message rattled of some information about a website. I was not able to capture the information. Then I used Angie's List messaging to get a response...nothing. Not one peep, and the message is still sitting there.

The work was outstanding. Obtaining an estimate was done very quickly...only several days after it was requested. The cost was acceptable and competitive. The job was scheduled, and the flooring crew showed up as planned. The two and three man crew worked very professionally, explained the work to be done, and completed the work on time. At the end of day, a thorough clean-up was performed. The quality of the work was outstanding. The "new" floor looks fantastic and exceeded our expectations. It was really fantastic that near the end of the project the owner came and double checked all the work, and walked us through the proper maintenance of the floor. It was a good experience, and we would use them again, and greatly recommend them to anyone looking for a hardwood floor refinishing.

The floors look beautiful. We are extremely pleased with the work. Michael, the owner, provided a very detailed list of all the steps involved and cost in the original estimate. He helped me chose a finish that would work with a busy house with pets. The final cost was consistent with his original estimate. His crew, Sean and John, were very professional and always cleaned up as much as possible every evening so we could move around our house during the work. They kept me informed of where they were in the process and finished within their time estimate. Michael came on most days to survey the work. Michael is very meticulous and treats your house like it was his own. They did some very nice details around vents and the fireplace that was nicer than the original. Very pleased and most likely will hire Ann Arbor Hardwoods in the future to do our staircase railings.

Michael and his team did a great job installing hardwood flooring in our home. The project was large, and required significant effort to deal with the legacy flooring. The end product looks amazing.

We needed a company to refinish hardwood floors in our new Ann Arbor home, and were looking for a black/espresso finish to match our stairway. Michael was prompt, honest and professional during the consultation, and was competitively-priced. Then, he even agreed to give an estimate for painting our kitchen cabinets--which we eventually decided to do as well. We could not be more pleased with the end results. Both the floors and cabinets look INCREDIBLE! The guys on the crew were clean, courteous and friendly. They stuck to the time estimate, and kept us updated throughout. They even followed up after the job and dropped off some professional cleaning supplies! We are picky professionals, and have used different flooring/contractors in the past. I can say without hesitation that Ann Arbor Hardwoods is the only place to go when you need work on your floors or cabinets. A+ rating from two very, very satisfied customers.

Estimate was informative and professional, the most in-depth estimate we received. Although the price was higher than other estimates, we elected to go with this company due to their reputation, their attention to detail, the promise that we would love every aspect of the work, and the lower VOC products used. Contact with the owner during the process was easy, and he was honest and helpful during each step of the process. We are very happy with the work that was done on our floors and are planning to use this company again in the future. Our friends have commented that it looks like we installed brand new hardwoods in our 100 year old house.

I saw that Ann Arbor Hardwood had great reviews. We are looking to have 3 rooms done in our home, hoping to somewhat match what we already have. My first experience was good. I did call and speak with Michael. He asked several questions about our project and current flooring. He then asked me to email him my contact information and appt details because he was driving. I did this but then never heard back to confirm appt. I called him back the evening prior to our scheduled appt to confirm and make sure he did in fact receive my email with my address. He apologized and said he did receive the email but he was very busy and did not have time to email the confirmation. I let him know that we would need to complete our appt by 10am (scheduled at 9:30am) since I had another committment. He asked me for approximate square footage and said this would be fine, he wouldn't measure if he know square footage. The morning of the appt he called at 8:50am and said he was able to make arrangements to be there sooner, and he was at my home. This was fine but I was not yet home from dropping my kids at school. Upon arriving at home he followed me into the driveway and we all got out of our cars. He was, however, on the phone and stood outside of my garage for 5 min or so before he came in and introduced himself. Once inside, we walked around and I let him know what I was looking for. He seemed very knowledgable and knew right away what current flooring I had installed. He did offer 2 ways to do the project. One would be to completely re-finish my current flooring to match things perfectly. I appreciate this but at this point I cannot afford to re-finish my entire downstairs. I told him I understand that the flooring may not match perfectly and I was OK with this. My next option was to match what we have as best as possible. Again, I was fine with this knowing that the color will be somewhat off but given that these were separate rooms I think it would be OK. What he next suggested was what surprised me! He actually said he would just quote for labor since Bruce flooring (what I currently have) is not high grade and that WE would have to go to Home Depot and buy it, get it to my home and then his company would simply install it. I explained to him that we are a busy, working family with 3 boys and a dog and that I am looking for a company to complete my project from start to finish. I was honestly very shocked at this suggestion! He then said that he didn't think we were a "good match" and that it is important to him to do quality work and to be proud of the finished product. I can certainly appreciate this but I was made to feel that our project was "second class" because I did not wish to spend the thousands of extra dollars to re-do my entire downstairs. I felt somewhat insulted that he basically stated that my current flooring is cheap and not good quality ( in my $500k home). He was polite and professional, but this was not what I expected from them with such great reviews. Very disappointing.
