I hired him because he was available, offered a good price and seemed to have done a decent job on a small sidewalk job and the cement pad for this project. I am not at all happy with the work. He suggested using steel plate that he could pick up and added $50 to the original bid, which I agreed to. He said it would add strength and make it easier and quicker for him. I told him from the start that I needed a 1/2 inch overhang around for the stucco that would be added later. He didn't do that. He didn't use reinforcing mesh like I asked for. I told him I needed the corners rounded off, he didn't do that. He left a section of metal exposed on one corner. The section of the island where my grill was supposed to go in was not done correctly so that my grill won't fit in. It has uncut metal in the way, but worse is that he didn't pay attention to the dimensions of the grill, which was right next to him, so he ended up putting cement in where the grill was supposed to sit on the metal plate. The mortar work is atrocious, with a lot of gaps and missing mortar. There is even a loose block under the grill section. I learned after that he made the mortar too wet so it just slipped out of the joints. All of that mortar is now piled in large dried lumps on my lawn. He originally bid $800 for the project, and during the project said that it was taking longer than he expected. I could see that he was rushing and I didn't like what I was seeing. I asked him what it would take to get him to slow down and not rush the job and he suggested I do the drywall sanding for a different project, so I agreed to that. He said he would be back in a couple days to take off the forms. He left an awful mess in my yard- hardened cement on the grass, used my tools, shovel, wheel barrow, etc and left them covered in cement, trash and scraps from his work, etc. When I asked him about the work remaining to do, he said he wasn't coming back to finish it without being paid more, which is not what he said the cost would be. Now I know why he doesn't have a bank account and only works in cash.
