We have had this contractor in our 100+ year old house 3 times now, and have been very happy with the results every time. On this project we wanted the work to commence quickly and he was able to accommodate us with no delay. We picked out the materials and had a solid design plan in mind, but of course there were design details along the way that we did not anticipate and know exactly how to handle. Our contractor was very good in listening to our ideas and offering suggestions when it was necessary. His work is nothing short of top notch. Attention to detail and taking pride on workmanship examples are: - When we removed the old counter top we noticed that the wall behind the counter had sheet rock over the plaster that did not extend very much below the top of the back splash. When we set the new counter top on the cabinets, it did not cover the edge of the sheet rock. The solution was to raise the new counter top with trim boards on top of the cabinets. This helped the back splash of the new counter top cover the edge of the sheet rock, but now it would not make it under either of the two window sills. This required modifying the window sills to accommodate the new counter top. As you can tell already, installing a new counter top in an old house takes a lot of patience. I was able to be with him when he ran into these issues, and he always checked with me before making any modifications to the existing construction to accommodate the new changes. Believe me when I tell you that not all contractors will work with you in this manner. The times where I was not around, and there was a significant decision that would affect the overall finish, he would always contact me or my Wife . After getting the height of the backsplash to cover the oddity in the wall, it was now time for him to do the painstaking task of and quot;scribingand quot; the backsplash so that it would fit snugly against the back wall. As I had mentioned earlier, our house is over 100 years old and the plaster walls aren't exactly and quot;flatand quot;. You absolutely do not want a gap between the backsplash and wall. You can eliminate this gap one of two ways. The first and easiest way is to simply install the counter top, and then put silicon caulking along the top edge of the backsplash to seal it. The finished look isn't very good, but it is the quick and dirty way to do it, and I have been told that about 75% of the contractors will do it this way to save time. This contractor used the second method, which is to carefully scribe the back of the counter so that it fits snugly along the entire length of the counter top, which is 12 feet in length. This is the longest length that you can order laminate counter in these days. This method entails making an adjustment to the counter top, fitting it to the wall, judging how it fits to the wall, removing it if it requires further scribing, then fitting it to the wall again. This proved to be quite a tedious endeavor, and took about 3-4 hours to make and quot;rightand quot;. There is no caulking along the back of this counter, and it looks great. - When he installed the flooring, he had to contend with 5 doorways. They door moulding did not get replaced. This type of floating floor can be installed over the old linoleum, which it was. He could have tried to shape the new flooring about all of this moulding, but the end result would not have turned out very well. What he did do was carefully make just enough room under the moulding to slip the new flooring under it. The end result looks very nice. It is very hard to tell that there is older floor beneath this new flooring. Also, there was quite a bit of squeaking on one side of the kitchen due to very old nails holding the sub floor together. He got some long screws and strategically screwed the floor from the basement side to eliminate all of the squeaking. My new flooring looks great and no longer squeaks when you walk on it. - There used to be a threshold from the kitchen to our walk-in pantry. At our request, he removed this threshold and firmed up the pantry floor using thick plywood and a self leveling epoxy. This improved the look of the new flooring going into this pantry and it feels much more solid than it used to. - I wanted to put a small flat screen TV on the wall above the newly constructed peninsula, which matches the new counter top. He worked with me to mold the new floor moulding and peninsula around my conduit to hide the cabling for the new TV. The end result is very slick. The legs that he built are simple but elegant, and get in your way when walking around the peninsula. In closing I will say that you can pay less to have this sort of work done in your home, but you will most likely and quot;get what you pay forand quot; and may not be totally satisfied with the final result. If you hire this contractor, you may pay a little more, but you will also be thrilled with the results. His imagination and attention to detail will make you glad that you hired him!!!
