Description of Work: couldn't get an estimate the three times he came out, kept hymning and hawing that this wasn't coming together and that wasn't blah, blah. Finally the old woman became disenchanted with the whole process after three months of not being any closer to starting so we went to Lowes and they will start as soon as the windows come in. i guess people in northern maine just expect less. from the people who do the work. this isn't the first such incident.

He did a very good job. Worked very fast and keep everyone else working steady. His prices were very reasonable. Most people wanted to do a package deal and these were very expensive. Conrad let us pay for the materials ourselves and pay him for his labor. It is a beautiful addition! Everyone who comes to the house loves it. We would have never been able to do this with out Conrad.
Description of Work: A large addtion with a bedroom, bathroom, garage and family room.

I want to say that I'm hesitant to provide Conrad and his team with a great review. You might say that I'm selfish in that I don't want him to be so busy that I have a hard time booking him for his next project!! That said, I know how hard it can be to find responsive and professional quality carpenters and I'm sure you feel the same. I will attest that McGrath Carpentry meets these criteria and then some. So, as far as I'm concerned, there is no need to look any further if want the job done right. Our house is like many others in Maine. Old, drafty, and has a huge thirst for oil. We opted to call Conrad for a bid on the items mentioned above. First and foremost, we wanted to button-up our house to make it more comfortable (this is unfortunate news for the Dead River Oil Company because this is probably going to result in downsizing). Additionally, we wanted to replace the worn out look that the house previously had (the pressed cardboard siding was deteriorating and the and quot;roll-onand quot; roof was pretty ugly). Anyway, over the course of the just over a month long installation process we had regular meetings with Conrad to ensure that everything was being installed correctly and was up to specification. Like many homeowners, the more construction work you do on your place the more bad stuff you find beneath the surface (such as fire damage, lack of insulation, tar paper in certain places) that end up resulting in additional decision points and budget action items. But we resolved these issues one step at a time and ended up with a quality product. Conrad also kept us up to speed on our budget so that we didn't break the bank too badly. Ultimately this resulted in us not being able to finish everything we wanted to (such as porch steps, and trim in certain places) but we hit all of the major areas and can easily come back to finish some of these additional items over time. I think the most memorable moment was when Conrad and his team were trying to install insulation/roofing/siding on the back corner of the house that had a hornet's nest in the siding (we discovered it just before the project started). While we were in the process of having a pest removal company remove the next, Conrad and his staff continued to work as best they could in the area. Let's say that the hornets weren't very pleased with the renovations. Thankfully no one was stung too badly! We're glad we called McGrath Carpentry for our project. They really restored our old farmhouse back to it's original glory! I wouldn't hesitate to give him a call if you have any exterior/interior renovations you want to have done in your home.

We had a 22' X 24' deck on the back of our house on the 2nd/3rd floor. We decided to close it in and make a workout/sports room. However, to match the decor of our house we added a 2nd floor to the addition. Once Conrad started we realized we would still want a small (6 feet) deck outside the work out room. Conrad then designed a cantilver deck with a roof to protect us from the rain. This was quite the job! The top of the roof was 44 feet high and the men climbed and built some tall scaffolding, rented a huge lift and we never had any doubt that Conrad was not 100% sure he could do the job. They started the job when the said they would. Worked in the rain and on the weekends when things had to get done. Our payment was split into 3 payments. The guys were always respectful but also had a sense of humor. My husband and I are extremely satisfied with this high quality addition that we get to finish ourselves for a summer project. The work that Conrad did was excellent and we would not have any problems contacting him in the future for other jobs.
Description of Work: Conrad and his crew built a very high addition on to the back of our house.

During our most recent winter, our master bedroom sustained damage from an ice dam. The water backup created drooping patches in our ceiling as well as damage to the plaster wall. Based on work we have had done in other rooms we were certain that the walls were uninsulated so we decided to have Conrad come in and replace the damaged areas and also remodel our existing closet which allowed us to add some much needed insulation to the drafty room. We contacted Conrad to act as contractor for the job. In my dealings with Conrad, he always made it a point to return my phone calls promptly and patiently answered any questions that I had. Personally, I've been in more situations then I care to admit with contractors, plumbers, electricians, etc, where they lack the basic courtesy to return your calls. So, when you can find one who actually returns your calls you know there is a good chance you found the right one! The first day and part of the second involved demolishing the plaster walls which is not a task I envy in the slightest. We have hardwood floors and Conrad made extra care to protect them during the process by bringing in wood boards to seperate the wall residue from the floor so that none of the plaster would scratch the floors (at the time we had no idea plaster was so damaging). The remaining time was spent on Conrad and his crew insulating and drywalling the exposed areas and adding some new trim pieces to the baseboard. That same week one of Conrad's subcontractors came out and did a great job mudding and taping the new walls. The finished product looked great and required minimal sanding. Now, construction aside, my wife was, of course, only concerned about two things. The dust and the well being of our two cats. Conrad and crew did a great job cleaning up the floor afterwards (we expected we'd just have to do all of cleaning when they left) which was greatly appreciated. Also, we kept our cats locked in the basement during the ordeal and they always made sure to let the cats out of their prison before they left each day (although it's hard to tell if they appreciated the gesture...they are cats, afterall).
Description of Work: Plaster wall demolition and removal from one wall, a partial ceiling, and entire closet followed by drywall installation. Trim and baseboard mouldings were also replaced in affected areas. Drywall mudding and taping were handled by Conrad's subcontractor.

roof snow removal

I called Conrad after an unfortunate incident with an ice dam and excessive snow load on my roof. Conrad fit me into his schedule the next day because he wanted to mitigate the damage to my interior walls as soon as possible. Not only did Conrad do an excellent job removing the snow but he went out of his way to remove as much of the ice dam that he could while he was up there. On top of all of this, the wind speed and wind chill were so severe that day that I just expected that he wouldn't make it to shovel my roof. When I arrived home that day, I was amazed to find all the work completed.
Description of Work: Roof shoveling and ice dam removal. Cost was based on a two-story dwelling with multiple steep pitched roof areas.
