I've dealt with Portland Glass in Lewiston on a variety of occasions and always found them a reliable supplier of windows, screens, and mirrors. in 2006 my contractor in Downeast Maine hired Portland Glass in Ellsworth to replace a three IGU Annealed DSB window units in my camp. Two of the three window units failed--because moisture got into the space between the two sheets of glass--and both my contractor and I assumed that Portland Glass would simply replace the windows at their expense. He called and was treated in a dismissive way; I called later and was treated in a more professional manner by the Ellsworth manager Kathy but received the same response. Portland Glass has no responsibility in the matter and the manufacturer warranties their products for only five years. She suggested the problem was caused by the house moving, which is to say, the house was at fault. My view is that a window ought to look after itself, even if the house moves. I'd be happy to make an exception in cases of earthquakes and earth slides. None of the forty odd windows in the rest of the house have failed over the last twenty-five years (so the "house moving" argument applies only to two windows installed by Portland Glass in June of 2006). In any case it seems to me that a product with no moving parts ought have a life span of longer than five or six years. I have no doubt that whoever manages Portland Glass would find my complaint unreasonable, "not what happens in the industry," "not the standard in the world of glass," and add that "the manufacturer bears the responsibility not the vendor," but I'm disappointed and have found another supplier.
