First a man named Todd came to my house to give an estimate to repair a roof leak and some vinyl siding. I was told that I needed new flashing around the chimney to repair the leak. Both jobs would be a day and a half of work and that the siding would take longer than the flashing installation around the chimney. He did not climb the roof. I asked him why not, he had a reason and that he could tell by looking at the existing flashing from the ground. Then a man named Chris and two workers from Massachusetts came a week or two later. On day one, the two workers from MA repaired and replaced vinyl siding. I provided the vinyl siding. I was satisfied with that job, however they were at my house for no longer than 4 hours. Chris was talking on his cell phone and came and went during the work. He did pick up some vinyl window trim at a local lumberyard. The next day Chris and the same two workers showed up again. Chris was on the ground talking on his cell phone, and the two workers were on the roof doing the repair. At one point, Chris did go up there, but not for long. They were on our property for two hours and were done. Before they left, I talked to Chris about the total number of hours of work completed, which was 6 hours and that Todd told me it would be a day and a half of work. I took a day and a half to mean 6-8 hours for one day and 3-4 hours for the second day. Chris said when I signed the check and handed it to Todd, that was like signing a contract and the price was set. That was what I agreed to and that was what I had to pay. I was home alone that day, and Chris was unrelenting, and I didn’t want a confrontation, so I acquiesced and they left. Later Chris sent me a bill via email and I paid online. This spring we had our chimney cleaned and inspected. We got a detailed report, and pictures of the chimney. The chimney inspection noted faulty flashing that needed repair. The report cites that: “Flashing is improperly woven with the shingles and allows for water penetration on at least two sides. Have recommended replacement.” The inspector told me on the day of inspection, April 28, 2023, that there was some silicone applied that was still sticky. The chimney inspector told me that silicone will not hold up and eventually fail. Pictures of the job below were taken by the chimney inspector and are of the work of CML Roofing.
