Spang Builders does any size job from kitchen and bath remodels to custom homes.
Spang used inferior materials in places; later subcontractors pointed out that he missed important code details, used interior plywood outside in places. The cellar leaks, the fifteen foot windows leak, and he REFUSED to fix these, blaming others for the mistakes. When I pointed out the snow/ice shield was missing from the windows, he lied and said it wasn't supposed to be there. The concrete floor in the garage has holes due to his pouring it in too-cold weather - Spang blamed the subcontractor who put in the garage doors. Water leaks into the garage floor when it rains - he put in an ugly patch which doesn't work. We were supposed to have regular stairs to the cellar but he paid no attention to where he put in support poles and we ended up with ladder stairs. He refused to correct this. I finally let him go and directly hired subcontractors. He is expensive, arrogant, and misleading. Stay away from this guy -- there are much better contractors in Maine.
Description of Work: Used Spang to build out the woodwork details and foundation of a new house. This was a dome house. The dome was built by a separate contractor (David Holmes from MN) who did a great job. Spang did the foundation, retaining wall, interior construction, eaves, roof where needed, connecting woodframe section, put in windows.

Response from Spang Builders Inc
Here is our reply to these complaints from an unhappy and difficult person: 1. Spang Builders is known for building high quality custom homes. We always use the highest quality building products. See our website and call our references. 2. She alleges that we missed important code details. If that were true she should have called the code enforcement officer, Brian Shaw, in Kennebunkport to report this. But I am sure that Brian has done his job as always and everything was inspected and approved. Spang Builders left this project before any substantial interior work was complete because the home owner was not paying her bills in a timely manner. We often had to wait 5-6 weeks for payment on invoices. We suggested that she could general contract the rest of her project so she could save money. And that's what she did. 3. As to the allegation that we used inferior products. As staled above we would never - we used CDX plywood on the entire project. 4. Leaks - This dome house was contracted by the home owner, with a dome contractor, David Holmes. It was erected with a temporary membrane on the outside with a one year guarantee. At the one year expiration, it was supposed to be stuccoed with a cement to prevent any leakage. This site has many large oak trees; one is within 10' of the dome. And it punctured the dome several times in several places. As instructed by the dome contractor, we used epoxy and mesh to flash all the windows and doors. Ice and snow shield was not compatible with these products. After the first leak occurred, I spoke to David Holmes and he said he had told the Customer that the dome needed to be plastered/stuccoed. The dome was erected in 2007 and has YET to be stuccoed! She won't spend the money to finish the dome properly, so many of the leaks persist. 5. The floor in the garage was pitted by her sub contractors after we left and I have no idea of what leaks she is referring to in the garage from the garage doors. 6. Stairs to the basement to an approx. 4' crawl space - these stairs were never in the original plans that she had paid for. When we received them, I suggested that she have an engineering firm from Portland make sure the point load would work. But of course that would cost money which she did not want to pay for, so she ended up with the ladder instead. When this project began, I asked for the very narrow 20' driveway to be widened to 40' to have better access to the site during the building process. The code enforcement officer agreed as long as the Customer removed it after the project was complete because of the sensitive wetlands in that area. They would have to be restored after the project was done and before occupancy would be granted. I know that to date she has not had this fill removed from that wetland area. So I wonder if she ever was granted occupancy from the town. I am convinced that if she would spend the money to have the dome stuccoed as was recommended by the contractor who installed it, her leak problems would be resolved. As for the $800,000 cost she said she paid us - that too is untrue. She paid us $616,517.83, which included a 150' road with city water, sewer and lots of blasting. I have lived in Kennebunkport my entire 47 years. Everyone knows my family and me. I have owned my business for almost 30 years. The Customer has a long history of fighting with her neighbors, the abutting golf course and the town. As with all my clients, I wanted to make her happy, but I couldn't so now I am blamed for her problems. I urge and welcome anyone reading this review to call any one of my references or affiliated vendors for a personal review.
