 + -1 moreKen did a great job! Furnace was repaired and cleaned. Ken is very professional and explained the problem and what was needed to repair. Cost for annual cleaning and repair was very reasonable. I would recommend Ken and plan on having him service the furnace in the future. Thank you!

Description of Work: I wasn't sure what I needed, but the heat and the thermostat were not working. It was a Sunday night. Luckily it wasn't freezing out yet, but there's was definitely a chill inside my apartment and the 3 others I rent out. I didn't need emergency help, but was looking for someone to come the next day. I logged onto Angie's List and searched for heating repair businesses and found several. I messaged 3 of those on the Angie's List website. I was shocked that within 15 minutes I had a message back from Ken at K & J Heating in Gray. We spent an hour messaging back and forth where I tried to explain what was going on. I couldn't believe the time and thoroughness that Ken spent on my issue that Sunday night! I appreciated the attention and patience he had with me, especially as my knowledge is very limited on the subject. Ken arrived the next morning and solved the problem and fixed everything. He called me at work and let me know what the issue was (a plugged "pigtail" in the steam system of my heat), that he had fixed the problem and how much it would cost. I was so pleased. That evening Ken texted me to make sure all was well. How nice is that? Fantastic!

 + -1 moreI knew immediately that Ken Viger was the right man to replace our furnace. There isn't anything Ken doesn't know about the units he sells and installs and answered my questions (and there were many) concerning the new units specs and warranty to the obscure. He is a man with a direct but professional manner and has a great sense of humor. Ken was punctual to a fault and stayed in touch through e-mail and returned calls promptly. I'd also mention that he is an amazing and highly competent technician and the installation and assembly of the new furnace bears this out. When the job was completed there wasn't a trace of the old furnace and the area was spotless. The new unit looked like a work of art and wasn't nearly as obtrusuve and noisy as the old one and now we have efficient, 21st century heating.

 + 0 moreWhen Ken came to my house to provide an estimate he looked at my existing condition and offered alternatives that I could perform myself in lieu of installing a heat pump. He admitted that he was not a good salesman. I appreciated his honesty and decided to have him install a heat pump anyway. The installation occurred over two different days since I had electrical work that Ken could not do himself and had to sub out. Since the subcontractor ended up doing the work far less than Ken had quoted, he adjusted the bill down. I believe Ken to be an honest businessman. So far the heat pump is working well as a cooling unit. I am satisfied with it's performance so far. I can only assume that it will function as well in the heating mode. I'll find out in a month or two.

He also took the time to route all of the pipes in a way to get the best use of space. We received quotes from many other installers before settling on K&J Heating and glad we made the call.  + -1 moreIt was really good. We felt like he was very professional. He came and fixed a problem we had with the furnace. He came back to make sure everything was working fine. He said not to hesitate to call him if there are any further problems and said if there are, he would come back and fix it. He is very efficient. Right now, he has one other gentleman that works with him. When we talked with him to install a gas fireplace, it was too expensive, so he found us something that was much less expensive and installed everything for us. He made sure everything was secure. He was here when the gas folks came to connect the hoses. His prices are reasonable. He charges per hour and the materials on the gas fireplace was much lesser than another person I had out here was promoting. The total price included the materials, the fireplace and installation.

 + -1 moreMy oil furnace started leaking water on 12/11. I called the company that has maintained it for several years. It is an oil company that I also purchase propane from for cooking. They diagnosed the problem, said it was a $400-$500 job to replace the coil gasket and said someone would call back. I gave them my cell # and told them that was the best # to reach me. I didn't hear back from them so the next day I called again and was told again that someone would call me. Instead of calling me directly they left a message on my home phone stating that because I was not a "preferred customer" they would not be able to schedule the repair until January. I was not a preferred customer because I did not purchase my heating oil from them. In the meantime the boiler was leaking profusely. Every hour a bucket had to be emptied or the cellar would flood. I called K&J in Gray. He very promptly returned my call. A couple hours later he was at my house. He tightened the gasket and stopped most of the leak (something the other company should have done but didn't). The next morning he showed up as promised, repaired my furnace and charged about half what the other company would have charged. He was very professional, polite and knew what he was talking about. I recommend K&J highly. It is almost time to replace my aging burner and I won't hesitate to use this company. I wish I had found them sooneer!

They came and did the job they were supposed to do, they did it well, they did it professionally, and the end result is what they did is still working beautifully. The cost was part of an entire contract because we had our bathroom redone and they were part of the team that did it.

 + -1 moreUpon a referral from my contractor, I contacted this provider and met the representative at my home on 8/21/2012. The purpose of the call was to purchase and install a gas stove for heating. On 9/07/2012 I emailed inquiring about the proposal; the representative responded with total price. I emailed again on 9/24/2012 that I had not received the actual proposal. On 10/03/2012 I received the proposal and responded on 10/5/2012 that I would like to proceed. On 10/22/2012 upon inquiring about the status, I was informed that the order had been canceled, but was being re-submitted. Finally, on 11/19/2012 I emailed that I was not satisfied with the level of customer service and informed K&J that I was no longer interested in doing business with them. I'm not giving this business an "F" because they were not rude to me or steal from me. They just provided very bad service. The representative from K&J responded: Jan, I do not blame you in any way.  + -1 moreIt went very well overall, with all of the work's being done in a very professional manner, with the technicians taking time to explain the details of the system's function as well as to clean up and restore the areas in which they worked. In addition, they will plan to return in the fall when the temperature drops sufficiently in order to "tweak" the system to ensure that it operates as designed.
Description of Work: Our bathroom remodeling contractor used them to redo completely our radiant floor heating, installed only 5.5 years earlier, which never functioned adequately or efficiently. This type of system is designed to transfer heat into and through the subflooring and thus into the bathroom tile floor and space. K&J removed all the previous heat transfer tubing from beneath the floor (it was simply stapled to the subfloor) and replaced it with the appropriate form of PEX, mounting the tubing on aluminum plates attached to the subfloor in order to effect efficient and effective thermal transfer. They insured that it was a single length of tubing to obviate the need for multiple couplings (present in the previous installation) that reduce the flow capacity. In addition, they modified the hot water supply system, which was simply an on/off supply controlled by the bathroom thermostat. Their modification included adding a three-way valve and a variable speed pump, the three-way valve having an outdoor reset control. This type of system modulates the mixing valve such that in milder conditions, water supplied through the heating loop is reused to an appropriate extent without going back through the water heater. An outside temperature sensor feeds information to the valve to effect this. In very cold conditions, when more heat is lost to the subfloor from the heating loop, more water will be sent back through the water heater. Such a system regulates the supply loop temperature to minimize energy consumption and optimize room temperature comfort.

 + -1 moreI am a first time home buyer and the previous owners recommended that I use K&J Heating for our furnace maintenance because that is who they had used in the past. In February, I called to scheduled a cleaning and they showed up promptly at the time we agreed upon. Before the cleaning they took the time to go through the parts of the system with me, give me an overview of how the system works and answer any questions I had. A month later my furnace started acting up and would automatically kick off. I had to reset it in the morning when I got up and I called K&J that evening and left a message to explain what was happening. (They do offer 24 hour emergency service, but I didn't feel I needed that) They gave me a call back first thing the next morning and said he would be by around 10am. While at work, they called me and said that they had spent 3 hours tearing down my furnace and checking everything over and didn't find anything wrong. He explained that they installed a digital modular that would be able to record the last 15 cycles in case this happens again they could track it. They did not charge for the 3 hours of labor or the modular that was installed. These guys are top rate and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for honest people who will treat you fairly.
