+ 0 moreSimon is a trustworthy professional. He has serviced our chimney since even before we purchased the home. He does a thorough cleaning and inspection. This time his camera found significant damage to the concrete liner for which he suggested a replacing with an updated alumninum liner which will allow for better performance overall. He reviewed the damage and options with us and the day of the replacement he was ontime and efficient. The cost of service includes both appointments.
Description of Work: Used for two different appointments. The first was our annual chimney sweep and inspection, the second was a follow up to install a new chimney liner due to damage done to the existing liner which was discovered during our initial appointment.

+ 0 moreWe called at the busy point in the season - most vendors in the area were booked solid until December. Simon called with a last minute opening, which worked well for me as I work from home. He showed up promptly and performed the job efficiently. I would definitely use him again for next year's cleaning as well as any other work we needed - he was honest and professional.
Description of Work: Swept chimney that had not been cleaned in 8+ years. Also removed several gallons of debris that had fallen down from previous chimney work.

+ 0 moreI am very impressed with the service I received. Simon cleaned my woodstove and pipe, which I wasn't expecting so that was a pleasant surprise. He arrived at the exact time he said he would. My house was left very clean around the areas that he was working (around the woodstove and clean out door in the basement). He also inspected my chimney and made recommendations for taking care of the issues found. I would definitely recommend him and use him again for future chimney service.

Description of Work: We heat orimarilyvwith wood. Our wood stove worked great and easy to control for even all night slow burns. We Asked to have chimney cleaned for woodstove that has been in use for 19 years with no problems. Chimney Sweep Services inspected and said they would not sweep creisote build up out of chimney as installed that a SS liner was required. We were under the pressure to remove creosote and could not get another sweeper in for more than a month . So we agreed. The job was botched, the original clay tile flue was cracked by use of chains to clear creosote. The ibmnstaklation set off smoke alarms in hose which never happened before. The stove air supply can no longer be controlled enough for an all night burn. The thimble at the wood stove is not tightly sealed and leaks combustion air into firebox( the installer gave us a tube of joint seal) and said try this but it did not work). We can use the stove but it burns hot, uses more wood, cannot burn all night and now chimney sweep cleaning has to be done with the stove and flue in place by removing baffles inside the stove. In our opinion We got the worst chimney sweep job anyone could expect and we don't think a stainless steel flue liner was needed. This was an A rated Angues List Company. We may be done with Angies list now too.

+ 0 moreSimon came out on Weds morning and looked over what had to be done. He thoroughly explained what had to be done and got to work that afternoon. He successfully completed the work the next afternoon.
Description of Work: Simon cleaned and repaired the main chimney in the living room, removing damaged bricks and lining. The results were obvious that night as soon as we lit the fire in the stove and we actually were warm throughout the down-stairs!

+ 2 moreFrom initial phone call to leaving the work area cleaner than they found it, Simon and Bob were professional and did an excellent job on a difficult project (2 other chimney sweeps never called me back after looking at my chimney problems). An improperly installed or maintained chimney can be a major hazard, do yourself a favor and let Simon do the job right. The bill was less than expected. Can't recommend enough.

+ -1 moreThey came to my home and cleaned the chimney from the roof. They also went into my basement and opened the trap and tried to clean the bottom of the chimney. He did not finish the job. He left a note saying that he couldn't finish because there was water at the bottom of my chimney. I emailed him back and forth a couple times discussing why he didn't finish the job. He said he'd come back and finish the job. He wanted my husband to install a chimney cap. It's been a year and I haven't heard back. He said because I was referred by someone he wanted to do right but....He hasn't been back

I really appreciated the fact that he showed me various things that he found throughout the process and explained what they meant. In terms of the chimney, he pointed out the signs of wear and we talked about what needed to be done to address them before they got significantly worse. Simon suggested that I purchase a wood stove thermometer and also recommended a product to help decrease creosote build-up. Very knowledgable and cleaned up nicely. Competitive pricing.

+ 2 moreExcellent , professional service. This was an add-on repair job to the original chimney cleaning ($140 a month earlier). Simon provided photos showing the need for repair and again showing the finished work. Clean and quick. Knows his stuff. And offered/added the gasket and roof tile repairs while he was up there at very little extra cost. He even obtained matching roof tiles.
Description of Work: Repaired broken/cracked concrete around chimney top and installed 2 chimney covers. Also sealed cracked vent gasket and obtained/replaced several missing roof tiles.

+ -1 moreI see reviews like this one all the time on this site and I hoped I wouldn't have to be the one to leave one like it, but here we are. Familiar story, my husband emailed Simon to get an estimate on our leaky Chimney and to take a look at our furnace pipe cap. A few days later, Simon returned the email, asking for our address so he could stop by when he was i the area. Two days later, he left a voicemail on my husband's phone saying he would be in the area that afternoon and could stop by. My husband called back and let him know that was fine and we would be home. Simon did not stop by, my husband left another voicemail and Simon did not return the call. 10 days later, with no contact, we are giving up. We chose him based on the other good reviews you can see here, so maybe this is an isolated incident but I thought I'd submit our experience anyway.

+ 0 moreOverall I was very pleased with Simons work. The one headache was the stove took much longer to get in than the distributor originally had said. Simon apologized profusely for the delay, but I see this as no fault of his, every week he would update me with the information the distributor passed along to him as to the status of the order. When the stove finally arrived he had it installed in one day. Him and his crew were very polite and professional... then the auger failed to move on testing the unit. He pulled the unit out and brought it back to his shop, where it was found to have a defective motor. Within a week he got the part in, repaired the unit and had it reinstalled. I will be hiring Simon again for all of my chimney/stove needs. However, I probably will not order another Breckwell stove.

Description of Work: I had a great experience with this company. Simon was on time and very professional. He explained the work he was going to do and made several recommendations along the way. I have a small fireplace in the master bedroom and he determined it was not operable but gave me some suggestions in order that it could be used. I also have an oversized fireplace on the main level and Simon was very helpful in giving me some ideas so that it could be used safely. After his visit he emailed pictures of the chimney along with links to websites to review different options to use my fireplaces safely. Price was very reasonable. I would highly recommend this company.

Description of Work: I used Maine Chimney Sweep Services for cleaning the roof cap and the fireplace insert and cleaning out and caulking the sweep box or the ash dump that is in the basement.

+ -1 moreAs for success, it's far too soon to tell. This project is meant to be a long term fix. To be clear, I do have confidence that the project will prove successful. Everything pertaining to this job was handled by Simon at the highest level of service and attention to detail. The term "contractor" now has a slightly more palatable connotation - and I don't say that idly!.
Description of Work: Scrubbed decaying bricks in the basement of a 114 y/o house. Then applied a thick coating of a gunnite-like material completely around the chimney, with the intent of it becoming a barrier to humidity and further decay. He also replaced (2) access doors.
