The told me it would be over $300.!!! I got the parts for about $30 (air filter, spark plug, oil) and did the tune-up myself in about 20 minutes. And they wanted $300+ for this? Seriously?

A Generator service is more than an air filter, spark plug and oil. A Power-Up Generator Service performed by a Factory Trained Kohler or Generac technician from MCES include the following: - Fuel line & connection check - Check vibration, noise, leakage and temperature - Change engine oil and and filter - Replace air filter - Inspect enclosure louvers and clear if necessary - Replace spark plugs - Remove corrosion and load test bettery - Lubricate engine - Test electrolyte level in unsealed batteries - Perform voltage and frequency test under load & adjust Mr. [Member Name Removed], you are very lucky to be have the ability and knowledge to perform an oil and filter change on your generator but not every generator owner can perform this service on their unit. MCES incurs the expense of sending out technicians to Wisconsin to be trained by the Manufacturers how to service, maintain and troubleshoot generators. This training is on top of other professional licenses that they have. Your time may be free to you but a licensed technician's time is not free nor should it be. These men are highly trained and educated in their field of mechanical specialty and many are multi-licensed. We do not apologize for charging a fair price for the value and expertise that we offer. So yes, "seriously" we charge for services performed.

I got a Bosch for $200 on Amazon with free Prime shipping! Their price is DOUBLE retail! That is extortion. It's an easy install - took 1/2 hour. I hate to think what they would charge for that!
Description of Work: Needed to have a small water heater replaced for our church. They came out and tested the rusty water coming out of the water heater and charged $90. They said it would cost $400 for a new heater + installation.

We purchase only 1st quality products through approved wholesale distribution networks. Their cost to us is out of our control. While some products are available through internet retailers, the history and quality of these products can not be verified and therefore we can not assume the risk of internet procured products. Many manufacturers will not warranty their products if purchased on-line and send out bulletins through the Manufacturer's Representatives stating that if installed, there is no warranty to the consumer. While something can be purchased for less cost, if the product does not perform the way intended it leaves the end user, the consumer or homeowner with no recourse. Cheap costs more. I can assure you Mr. [Member Name Removed] that Mid-Coast Energy Systems has never and will never "extort" our customers. MCES is a very ethical company following in the philosophy of our founder, Bob Hardina. Your accusation is insulting and untrue.

It took a month or so to get to the root of the problem, but Nick was persistent and committed to finding the answer. He would fix it, it would be fine, then a week or two later it stopped working again. We were credited the hours we paid for when the fix wouldn't last because he didn't feel he had solved the problem--I was impressed! (We didn't even ask for a credit!) I appreciated that Nick was so professional and personable and loyal to our problem and committed to finding us a solution. He eventually brought in Caitlin to join him and the two worked tirelessly until they could figure it out with the help of tech support.
Description of Work: Investigative work into why our home's hot water was not working. We moved into our home and a few days later the hot water didn't work. The boiler was working and everything seemed to be right but it just wasn't delivering hot water.

There were a few problems with the installation that I will outline below in bullet form: - Change orders. When we were looking to have this work done we got three independent quotes on the project. We were very careful to have the quotes for identical labor and materials so we could compare apples to apples what was being offered. We also had the same language put into the contract so that the vendor would be held to the same terms. Mid-Coast Energy had the best quote (least expensive) so we went with them. However when it came time to do the installation, they kept trying to hit us with change orders. Luckily we had everything in writing, so they had no recourse but to follow through with their commitments, but it was an uphill battle all the way to keep them to what they promised to deliver on. I do not know if this is a habit of theirs, but it felt like they may low-ball quotes in order to get bids and then bring their quote back up or over the other bids through change orders. I would suggest caution in making sure you are careful in the language that is used in contracting. - Paying to learn. After the installation, the system seemed to run fine for awhile. However, we noticed after some time that when we had guests over or there was a high demand for hot water, the system did not keep up. When we had Mid-Coast come over to look at the system, they said that it was not installed correctly and wanted to charge us time and materials to get it setup correctly. I told them that it was not our job to pay them to learn how to install the boiler properly and that since they did the installation they should make good on their mistakes. After haggling, they finally conceded to pay for the labor and we would cover the materials. I was not happy about this and thought they should make good on their warranty. - Varying quality of technicians. Mid-Coast seems to have some very good technicians (their "A" team) and then some very poor ones ("C" and below). If you use them, be sure to get their better staff! We have had technicians from the "C" team come to do work that then had to be repaired by an "A" team member. Needless to say, Mid-Coast charged us for both the "A" and "C" member's work. Again, it is not fair to have the client pay Mid-Coast to train their staff! In conclusion, I really want to like this company. They have some very talented staff and they do a lot of fine work in our community funding projects for various non-profits. I do hope they can turn around some of their business practices

I went to their offices on Route 1 in Damariscotta to see if they provided any solar heating systems. The manager told me they didn't do any solar heating. Manager suggested they do an investigation of my home and draw up a plan for new heating system ....either oil or gas based. I said I had my heart set on solar. He said it would cost me nothing for the work up & estimate and he felt it would likely change my mind when I saw the price and new improvement plan. I reluctantly let him do the work up. He & his secretary were very pleasant and courteous going thru my home. It wasn't long afterwards....a few days or a week...that I received the multi-paged plan. It was well done. The price for the new system would have been around $13,000. My home is a two story , 3 bedroom, livingroom, kitchen, 1 bath & full basement & mudroom....about 1300 sq feet. If I wasn't set on solar, I would have taken this plan. However, a solar system means all heat & electric costs in the future are free. There is only a $9 month charge from the local electric company to store all my excess energy . So with solar I would go from spending $3500 a year on oil heat & electricity to $108 a year on solar heat & electricity. If I ultimately switched to an electric car & electric green house, the energy to runs those would be free too. It would take me only 5 years to pay for the cost of putting in the solar system . Although I didn't use Mid-Coast Energy for my new heating system.....I would recommend them to anyone wanting to do an oil or gas furnace heating system.. Although I can't say how their systems work, I know many people who have them and I have heard little complaint from those people. They certainly did a very professional work up plan for a system and were delightful people to deal with during the estimate work up plan.. Since then I have noticed that they now install solar hot water heaters.
Description of Work: The manager of this company toured my house and provided a full report work up on what needed to be done to install a new oil or gas furnace heating system for my whole house. The current system is 100 years old oil , boiler furnace/ radiator system. I do not remember the exact date or the exact year that Mid Coast Energy gave me an estimate.....so the date I filled in isn't correct. But without a 3 pronged date, this review wouldn't be allowed. I didn't save the report.

Dear Ms. [removed member name]: Thank you for your recent and kind review. Although you did not use our company in 2010, we are very pleased that your experience was such a pleasant one, that you still remember enough detail to write a review 4 years later! Just to clarify the reason why we do not recommend or install complete home solar heating systems in Maine is that in our opinion, it may not be your best choice for the following reason. There are simply not enough hours of effective sunshine per day in the winter months to drive tank temperatures up to an adequate level for space heating and the result would likely be uncomfortable for the homeowner. Today, we recommend geothermal heating/cooling and heat pumps. Since your 2010 estimate, technology and equipment made to increase the efficiency of your oil or gas system have changed and improved as well. For instance, a Fitch Fuel Catalyst will reduce fuel consumption and emissions and improve a systems overall performance. In addition, there are now ways to save by creating a hybrid heating and cooling system that starts with your current system and adds an additional fuel source hence combining two fuel sources for heat – natural gas, oil, or propane and electric. If you’d like to learn more about energy efficiency, please do not hesitate to call us, we’d love to fill you in on the latest news, or answer any questions you may have. If you do wish to call, please ask for Gina Philippon in the estimating department.

I will update once we actually have the price quote. **Update, 30th December - we still have not had the call back, so no price quote and no home visit.
Description of Work: We've been trying to get a price quote on moving some baseboard heaters and a bathroom remodel for over 3 weeks now. Initial call was good, my husband was told by the main office someone would call that day, and they did. That person however couldn't do stairs, so passed us on to someone else, who never called. My husband left messages, but still nothing. A week ago he tried the main office again, and was given another person to talk to, he left a message with them, and they did call back, but not for a few days. We have yet to have them come in to do the quote, but in theory that should be this week (and i'll update this review then with further details on price etc). In short, being called back is slow. I'm sure they're faster with actual plumbing/HVAC emergencies (many friends had recommended them as fast), and it is winter so i'm sure they're busy - but we feel it's been a real run around trying to get someone here to give us a pretty simple price quote. Everyone we spoke to has been very nice and helpful on the phone.

my issue is, occasionally while watering my garden or using a faucet in the house, the pressure drops off considerably, especially if you flush a toilet. I have high iron in my water and i wanted to see if the pipe from the well was restricted. if the pump can supply plenty of water to the house then maybe the valve and inlet to the tank was restricted, or maybe it's the tank it's self. either way something needs to be done. 1) the "green horn" they sent to my house was not the plumbing guy i was told was the man for the job. he showed up around 9am and was on the phone to his boss the entire time. he disconnected the incoming line but who know what the volume of water was. i don't even think he checked it. 2) if there pump was working properly and there was more the 4gal/min coming from the well then replacing the check valve and fittings to the tank would have been straight forward, or at least take it apart to see if it were plugged. which was the case at my neighbors, who has high iron in the water as well. 3) the last few re-cylces/cleaning the softener did not function properly and it turned the water in the house orange, more so then it was before we installed the softener. which was installed less than a year ago. this never happened and i ended up doing a couple manual flushes. 4) instead of turning the softener to by-pass every time i need to water the garden i would like to install a by-pass line prior to the softener to the spigots. this is about 4' away from the existing supply to the spigot on the west side of the house, which is directly across the east side spigot 30' away. so for a couple "T", some end caps and 35' of tubing they quoted me $550, i don't think the kid even measured the distance. tubing $1 per foot, $10 to $20 in fittings and solder and maybe, maybe, two hours of work...i'll just do it myself. so, their troubleshooting said "maybe it's the head pressure in the well". they turned the water off around 10am left for the day and showed up 5.5hrs later and checked for leaks and let the well "fill up". NO LUCK, they didn't find anything, test anything or fix anything...nor did they offer a possible next step or solution, nope, just a bill for 3.5hrs of laybor at $85/hr...$300 to shut my water off for an entire day! wife couldn't flush toilets or do laundry dishes wash her hands...an hour an a half of work, did nothing, fixed nothing and charged me for 3.5! I WILL NEVER USE THE GUYS AGAIN.
Description of Work: 1) check incoming water line for pressure issue, 2) check the valve at the pressure take for blockage, 3) service water softener, 4) quote for by-pass water softener to outside water spigots.

We strive to provide the highest quality mechanical services and customer service. In this case, we were called because you had depleted your water supply and were experiencing very low water pressure or no water at all. In order to determine a cause, water had to be shut off and the well replenished, which typically takes several hours. We billed you only for the time our technician spent checking for possible leaks and other pressure- depleting sources by process of elimination. When we left, you had running water and a full well. None the less, in consideration of your obvious frustration we did not charge you the full $300.00 for the actual time we spent troubleshooting your lack of water problem- but instead, adjusted your bill down to nearly half of the actual amount owed. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. We hope that this explanation clarifies any misunderstanding of the services and accommodations that Mid-Coast Energy provided to you and that your summer was otherwise a very enjoyable one.

Description of Work: Installed a new propane furnace and earlier, a sump pump. The service was excellent, prompt and correct. The team who removed the old furnace, oil tank and installed the new equipment were professional and very pleasant. Our house is c. 1800's with low basement ceilings and no access to the outside. All new equipment and old equipment had to be moved through our home. They took all precautions to protect our floors to avoid any damage. We will definitely call them for future needs.

They arrived promptly and were there most of the day as they had some issues finally they got the pump working but were not happy with the pressure switch on the pump. They came back the next day and installed a new pump. I did have an issue the following week with no water and they had emergency service come out but it just needed to be re-pressurized due to a power outage. They have prompt emergency service on their products. I would use their services again.

Even though I was a new customer who had a furnace that was not in operation for several years (history of furnace unknown - old house purchase), the company offered me their yearly maintenance plan cost ($209) for the clean-out and maintenance of the furnace for this work. The clean-out that was performed on the furnace was more labor intensive than that of a yearly cleaning. They were very professional and personable and answered all of the questions I had concerning other older systems (well) that I had as they perform this work also.

They were great. The experience was very good. Out of all the estimates I got, it was the one where they took me most seriously and answered all my questions. They didn't treat me like I was stupid. They worked very hard to get the work done very quickly because I had a system that was becoming dangerous and also to get it done in time for the tax credit. The folks that were doing the install completely reworked their plan so that I would be without heat for the shortest time possible. I worked with Gina on the estimation. She was really very good about talking through all of the options and sort of being an advocate for what would be best for me as opposed to selling a specific product. She worked with me through the pros and cons of various approaches. She was very quick in getting back to me with my questions and quick in getting the estimate back and scheduling the work. The guys who did the install were very quick, neat and thoughtful about how they did the job. They revised their normal work plan with the minimal amount of down time. The price was very good. They were very responsive and professional. I would absolutely use them again.
