The first six months, went well. Then, without warning, in the summer of 09, they decided to tear up the drive way to do work on a drainage system on one of the neighboring apartments. I was unable to drive my vehicle out of the parking lot because of an 8 ft. ditch! I was given no notice of having to park my vehicle in another area until the work was done. One of the other tenants in my building called to complain about it and I was told he was yelled at by the landlord. That tenant later moved out that same year. We had a lot of rain the summer of ?09 and our sump pump was making a lot of strange noises. I called the landlord about it twice and no one came to look at it. A week later, after a big rain storm, I found our basement was flooded with about 4 inches of water. I called the landlord again and this time someone showed up with a new sump pump. I spent 2 hours sweeping the water to the pump in order to help it get sucked out of the basement. I didn't have to do it, but I did have things stored down there that I didn?t want ruined. In Nov. of 2009, I came home to find that half of the things I had stored in the basement were missing. Two brand new mountain bicycles, yard sale clothes & toys, an exercise bike, some things that belonged to my mother who had passed away, a small table and a stereo. Seeing how only my things were taken, and there was no sign of breaking and entering, I called the landlord. I was told by Robin Silver, that she had sent her janitor out with instructions to clean out the basements of all the apartment buildings. I asked her under what authority she had to remove my stuff and she told me that according to my lease, I wasn't supposed to have things outside my area. She was right. In my lease I was told that I was to keep things only in my cage in the basement. But there is also a law that says if anything is considered, by the landlord, to be abandoned material, he or she has to give 14 days notice to the inhabitants of the building to have those things claimed and removed. If by then it isn't claimed or removed, they have the right to confiscate it. Well, I didn't get any notice. And if I had, I would have moved the stuff, since it wasn't a whole lot down there. On the phone, I could hear Barney Silver laughing, while Robin explained to him what I was calling about. I tried to track down my stuff, with little to no help from the landlord or the janitor who took everything. The police were unable to do anything about it, since it was a "civil matter." My insurance wouldn't cover the loss for the same reason. The landlord tried to pay my losses with a check for $50, but that didn't even cover the cost of just one of my stolen mountain bikes. So I decided I should move out because I no longer felt that my things would stay safe in my apartment. If you rent from these people be VERY careful! They're pretty slick and are known in Bangor for being crooks.
