Dave Lants the owner of Spa and Pool Services a self-proclaimed expert pool inspector gave me a reasonable estimate (4.9k) to get my pool in working order. I gave him a deposit and was told it would be about three weeks before he could get started. He wanted an extra thousand to clean the debris out of the pool so we made a deal where as I would clean the pool. After it was clean, I asked him to come ensure it was clean enough for him to start work. When he came back out, he said the pool was in worse shape than he thought and it could cost in upwards of 40- to 50k. As an enlisted Soldier, I told him that was too much to spend and that I would fill in the pool. I asked for my deposit back since he had not started any of the contracted work. This is when the real issue started. He refused to give me my deposit of $2800. I spent a third of my deposit in attorney’s fees suing Dave Lants and his company Spa and Pool Services. After almost a year of back and forth with the attorneys, and two days off work to go to court he was finely ordered by the courts to repay all of the deposit but I was out the attorney’s fees. I would not recommend Dave Lants and or his company Spa and Pool Services to anyone for any reason unless there is not enough stress in your life.

Response from SPA & POOL SVC INC
This post is in response to the February 18, 2013 post by [member name removed], as I think it is important for consumers to get both sides of the story. As a pool services contractor with over 30 years of experience, I have based my livelihood on my reputation for providing quality work at a competitive price. Unfortunately, a genuine dispute arose out of the above referenced job that resulted in litigation. To provide some hindsight, a few years ago I provided a price quote of $5,600.00 to the previous owner of the property for work on the inground swimming pool. [member name removed] purchased the property and asked us if we would honor the original price quote and I said I would. As soon as the contract was signed and a deposit of $2800.00 was received, we ordered the pool’s custom liner, as is customary due to the time it takes to receive the custom liner and the condensed nature of the pool season. However, after the pool was drained and the debris removed, serious structural damage was discovered in the pool’s foundation. Once the damage was discovered, [member name removed] asked that I provide him with a new estimate. I responded that I needed to work some figures before giving an accurate assessment of what I thought it would cost, but [member name removed] was persistent, so I told him that I was really not sure, but under the worst case scenario the costs could be up to $40,000.00 or $50,000.00 if the entire structure had to be demolished and replaced with an entirely new pool. About a week later, after having a chance to accurately assess the project and price the materials, I sent [member name removed] a new price quote of $9,500.00. I never received a response to the offer, or had any additional communication with[member name removed] other than through his attorneys. I later learned that [member name removed] filled in the pool shortly after the structural damage was discovered. To make matters worse, settlement negotiations with [member name removed] attorneys were almost impossible, as I was never able to speak with the same person with regards to this matter. On eight occasions, all of which are documented, I reached out to [member name removed] counsel in an attempt to get the matter resolved in good faith. I never received the same courtesy from the other side. To summarize, I never quoted [member name removed] a price of $4,900.00 on the original job, nor did I quote him a price of $50,000.00 to repair the damaged foundation. Rather, I agreed to honor the $5,600.00 price quote which was originally given to a person two parties removed, and then provided a written offer of $9,500.00 after structural issues were discovered. Instead of responding to my offer, [member name removed] filled in his pool, and I was stuck with an unusable custom pool liner. The $2,800.00 deposit, which was used to purchase the custom pool liner, is still in my company’s possession. Further, just like [member name removed], I incurred additional costs, attorney’s fees and time off of work. Being also a military veteran, I wish [member name removed] the best of luck in the future, but I truly do not understand why, after this matter is over, he felt the need to trash my company on Angie’s List. In my heart, I do not believe his Angie’s List review is indicative of the service one can expect from Spa & Pool Service, Inc. I have always tried to do right by my customers, and that policy has served this company well for over thirty years.

Please see above. It tells the entire story.
Description of Work: The workmen dug down 14 ft. under my pool to lay in drain tiles which connected to a sump pump to pump ground water out from under the pool which damaged the pool liner and was leaking into my basement. It was a huge project, taking 4 men and about 4 days to complete the job. The men were professional, knew what they were doing, and despite the high temperatures, completed it on time. A new liner was put in place and I'm enjoying the pool. A week later, the filter and the motor broke and had to be replaced. The workmen came out again and replaced both equipments in a day. The entire job -- digging down to about 14 ft., putting in drain tiles, cementing it in place, installing a new liner, installing a sump pump and timer and the PVC pipe out to the street, installing new motor and filter, cost appx. $7,000, and was worth it.

It's hard to give you a story about a service I've received for several years. I'm just rating the company as an "A" for others who may be looking for a pool repair/maintenance company.
Description of Work: I have used Spa and Pool for several years. They sell pool and spa chemicals and perform repairs. They have opened and closed my pool for years, replaced the filter, replaced filter sand, installed 2-3 vinyl liners, repaired a cracked skimmer box, siphoned water from behind the liner and did troubleshooting on various problems. The owner, Dave, his wife, daughter and family are very nice people to deal with and try to give you the best deal for your money. He has bent over backwards to help me and I appreciate his service. Service technicians in this business come and go, and last year's technicians were adequate, but not very friendly. Even though the price for a closing/opening has increased, but I wouldn't switch to another company.
