I would highly recommend Stephen Lewis Barrett Contracting. Stephen met with my husband and I to discuss a residential roof replacement. We were very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. We hired this company and could not be happier. We are extremely satisfied with the appearance of our new roof and the skill of the gentlemen that completed the work. The job was completed with no disruption to our schedule and the clean up was outstanding. We were very pleased with the pricing as well.

My wife and I hired Stephen Lewis Barrett Contracting to completely finish our unfinished basement. The project involved sawing a concrete wall in our crawlspace and removing it, building a room in the basement that would serve as an office, creating a storage room, and adding a full bathroom. Before the construction began, Stephen consulted with us and gave us several suggestions regarding the final layout and placement of the bathroom. Once we finalized the plans, He pulled the appropriate permits and began work. I'm glad that he was knowledgeable about the permitting process and was able to do that because I wasn't looking forward to dealing with it. The crew arrived on time, were professional and quickly got things going. Unfortunately, I had a change of heart in how the final layout of the basement was to be even though the framing was partially done. I decided that bathroom needed to shift to another position about 6 feet away. Stephen made this same suggestion earlier, but we didn't take it. It wasn't until the work began that I decided that his idea was better. I expected him to be resistant to changing midway through the project, but he didn't skip a beat. His crew (and I felt real bad about this because it caused more labor and loss of time) undid the framing to accommodate the new and final layout. One other note, even though this wasn't part of the deal, Stephen checked out my roof (since it was older) and reported that it appeared to still be in good shape. I really appreciated his honesty. Once the job was finished, my wife and I were excited. I finally had a real office, a storage room, and an additional bathroom. This significantly increased the value of our house. Our ugly basement littered with junk was now a useful and welcoming space with all the junk tucked away into a storage room. I'm trying to think if there was anything negative about the experience and honestly it was actually smoother than what I expected (except of course my change of heart about the layout). When spending $25K on a contractor to do a job, I was pretty nervous about it and was waiting for something to happen that would somehow cost me more money and time. I give an A+ to Stephen and his crew for a job well done. Sometime later, I called Stephen and asked if he would put a roof on a garden shed that I built. I was proud of myself for getting the shed built, but I didn't know the first thing about putting a roof on. I was going to wing it, but on a whim I called Stephen and asked if this job was too small for him. He told me that it wasn't a problem, quoted me a great price and said that he would take care of it the next day. Sure enough, the next morning as I was pouring my coffee his crew pulled up and hopped up onto the shed. It didn't take more than a couple of hours to get the job done, but I was extremely pleased at how nice my shed looked. People keep asking me where I purchased it at, and all I can say is that I built it and then had a professional roofer finish it. I would definitely use Stephen Lewis Barrett Contracting again.
Description of Work: We used Stephen Lewis Barrett Contracting for two separate jobs. The first was to completely finish our unfinished basement and build an office as well as a complete full bathroom. We were pleased with the results and hired his crew for a second job of putting a roof on a garden shed that I had constructed.

Stephen's crew cut the limb away from the roof. They replaced about 10 shingles that had been damaged. They also reattached the gutter that had been pulled away from the house. In the past, Stephen and his crew have come by at the drop of a hat to check on a leak and even helped resolve a drainage issue in my crawl space and yard. (Those guys dig fast!) Would highly recommend if you want a quality, thorough job. And, if you have a problem, they will take care of it - not just ignore your calls.
Description of Work: Stephen's crew came by to remove a limb that fell on my roof during the ice storm.

Nothing happened with this contractor, because I couldn't get a response after 2 requests.
Description of Work: I spoke to Stephen Barrett on Monday, November 12, 2012 and requested that someone come to our house to look at our roof to provide an estimate of repair. I also provided the days that I or my husband would be available to meet with someone. Mr. Barrett told me that he would return my call the next day (Tues., 11/13) to let me know when someone could come by. I did not receive a phone call. On Wednesday, November 14, I called and spoke to Mr. Barrett's wife who relayed that their staff was busy working on a job in Northern Virginia. She suggested this as the reason that I had not been contacted. She assured me that she would speak to her husband and that I would be contacted in the next day or so. Today is November 20th and I have not received a call. I imagine that the work that this contractor performs is good as indicated by their Angie's List rating. Also, it appears that they have more work than they can handle which I can understand. It's a matter of professionalism when a potential customer contacts you to be receptive and provide feedback that you can or cannot provide an estimate or repair in a timely fashion. If a timeframe had been communicated then we could decide if that was something we could work with. If timing doesn't work, it's ok to say so. We would thank the contractor for their time and keep them on the list for potential future work. It's as simple as that. My husband has run his own business for 30+ years and I've worked with various contractors on 3 previous homes. We have contractors that we've used for years for various jobs. I suppose the Do/Don't aspect for me going forward is to contact more than 1 contractor with good ratings to provide an estimate to perform a job. This should eliminate wasting our time on contractors that aren't interested or too busy for additional business. My husband and I are more interested in quality as opposed to searching for the lowest price. This is the reason why I signed up for Angie's List. I'm not looking to give this contractor a bad rating, but rather to make a point that responsiveness including returning phone calls, despite business volume, is important and an indication of character.

He was good. He came and explained what needed to be done. Setting up an appointment was easy. Stephen came in and did the work. My neighbor also got the work done from him at the same time so we got few dollars off. Overall it was a good experience. The only complain that we have is, he told us he would be sending a document stating that the new roof was installed; so that whenever we are selling the house, we could show that to the potential buyers. We gave him couple of calls but he seemed busy and never came with the document. Work wise the experience was good but the follow up wasn't good.
Description of Work: I used Stephen Lewis Barrett Contracting to get the entire roof changed.

On the Sunday after Hurricane Irene, we found we had lost a section of ridge vent. We called Stephen Lewis Barrett Contracting, and they came out that same day and repaired the vent for a reasonable price. Responsiveness like that, especially when needed to prevent additional damage, is a part of the basis for great service. They also took the time to see how the rest of the roof looked, and found one other problem that will eventually need repair. I'm glad they took the time to do that.
Description of Work: Replaced a section of ridge vent that was blown free from our roof. Came out on an emergency basis on a Sunday.

One of the foremen explained that low insulation levels usually caused this kind of -problem and he went up to take a look at our insulation and suggested that we increase the insulation in the attic. They gave me a great price on the insulation work and I'm looking forward to saving some money on my bills for the rest of the year.
Description of Work: After the big snow we had some water come in the house so I called Henry's Housework, but all of their crews were tied up. They suggested that I contact Barrett Contractors. I gave Stephen a call and told him my situation and he sent a crew out to check the roof within a couple of hours. Apparently my roof leak was caused by an ice dam which they were able to fix very easily for around $400.
