We specialize in basic and extreme yard clean-ups. Basic cleanups would include hand weeding, cleaning, edging and mulching beds. Correct maintenance pruning of shrubs and small trees. Yard by Yard Makeovers was the only company I called that actually had someone answering the phones. Pam was friendly and was able to put us on schedule within the week for an estimate. Yard by Yard was the first estimate I got because the other folks took 10 days or more to respond to my calls. I got an initial hand written estimate from Brian on the spot when he came out. I got a contract via email with-in the day that matched that estimate when I called to hire them. And when all was said and done, the work that was performed was as written in the estimate and excellent quality. The price was exactly as estimated. Brian came out- a few minutes late but called on time and said he would be a bit late. Upon arrival, Brian immediately knew what was up with our backyard- major drainage issues. He didn't even pretend he could work around it- he gave us the name of someone who has expertise in the area. That said, Brain then gave us an estimate on cleaning up the backyard - not doing the landscape until drainage was addressed- and re-landscaping the front yard. The front yard consisted of removing all of the plantings and old mulch around the beds near the house and completely re-doing them. Also, creating a new bed area near the driveway / side of the house that had been long over grown. In addition, pruning 3 trees and removing one smaller tree, and planting grass in three different areas that were either dug up for transplanting or had been dead patches in the lawn. Brian has a great sense of what was going on in our yard (very sloped, deer infested, shady, wet) and had a plan to deal with it. He didn't buy many plants rather he transplanted many of the ones we had that weren't working either because they were in the wrong place to begin with or had be neglected and over grown. His workers arrived on time and worked constantly through the day! Brian was onsite for a good part of the day directing the job and hand picked the new plantings. We were on a tight deadline (my daughter was graduating and we had tons of people coming) and Brian really came through!!! PS: When the other guys did come out they were MORE expensive and didn't seem interested in the work. They didn't want to transplant anything and ignored the drainage issues completely. Also, Brian was very conscious of deer resistant plants for our landscape- no one else even mentioned it.
Description of Work: Completely re-landscaped front yard and cleaned and planted new bed in backyard.

After much frustration with non-responsive local landscapers, I called Yard-by-Yard landscaping. They arrived a few minutes late, but quickly assessed the problem area and offered a written estimate. Daniel also offered lots of helpful advice about other areas we could work on to improve the yard. But he didn't push us to use his services for anything other than what we requested. We hired his company and they came within a few days of our call to do the work. Everything was done in-time, on budget, and the slope and surrounding areas look great. He turned our jungle-hill into a clean garden area. We would definitely use them again for future projects.
Description of Work: Removed invasive plants (including extremely tough, deep-rooted vines) from sloping part of yard. Repositioned decorative slate and rocks. Mulched and applied weed-seed killer.

The job went very well. Brian the owner met me at my home to provide the initial estimate and his price was very fair and reasonable for the work he and his team performed. The team came out and completed the work very quickly. The planting, edging, and mulching was completed within two days. The installation of the drain and flagstone walkway was completed in two days. I met with Brian the owner to discuss what types of plants I wanted and he offered several suggestions based on the amount of sun that my home receives on a daily basis. The crew cleaned up EVERYTHING before they left each day. There was no mess whatsoever. I will be contracting with Yard by Yard again to complete more landscaping work around my house in the near future.
Description of Work: The crew pruned all of the scrubs and trees in my yard as needed. They outlines and cut a natural decorative edge for all of my plant, shrub, and tree beds (and cleaned out all of the weeds). The team removed several large plants that were not surviving well in their current location (they also transplated several large everygreens to a better location in my yard). Over 10 new plants/scrubs were also planted throughout the yard as well.I also contracted Yard by Yard to remove a large cinderblock border on the side of my house. The reduced the width of the garden bed from 4 feet to 2 feet and installed an underground downspout drain (2 downspouts now empty into the back yard). They also installed a flagstone pathway with 2' x 2' flagstones.

The owner, Brian arrived on Monday to give me an estimate. We walked through the yard and he listened to me as I described what I felt I needed. I left him to examine the yard in more detail. He knocked on my door 40 minutes later and provided the estimate with a detailed work plan. He not only responded to what I thought I needed, he also provided suggestions and options for my consideration. I did not feel pressured to choose a service I didn't need. I was satisfied with the plan and made a deposit on the work. To be sure my husband was also satisfied with the plan, Brian returned on Wednesday to walk through the work with my husband to confirm our expectations. Brian and his crew arrived at 8:00am on Thursday and had completed the work by 6pm. My husband and I are very happy with the work. Last Monday, our yard was overgrown and I was stressed out about the amount of time and effort we would have to invest to make it livable by spring. All that changed in three days. My husband and I expect to have Yard by Yard Makeovers, LLC help us maintain our yard. We are looking forward to enjoying our outdoor living space.
Description of Work: Total clean up of front and back yards and prep of garden beds for spring. This included removal of a damaged evergreen tree, several deeply rooted weed bushes along property line bordering neighbor, other yard debris, some construction debris left in yard, elimination of a very aggressive ground cover from the garden beds bordering the house, redesigning the garden border outline, installing commercial grade edging, regrading side yard to ensure proper drainage and fresh mulch for garden beds.

We were able to schedule service fairly quickly and they arrived promptly on the scheduled day. Brian put one man on the job who was a virtual machine - he dug probably 25 stumps and ugly old plants out of our yard in about three hours, and finished the job by smoothing over all the topsoil and getting rid of all debris. It was an absolute pleasure working with Brian and his crew, and the price was well worth it - it would have taken my husband and me FOREVER to clear out what they did. Brian was also very knowledgable and willing to talk with us about their landscaping/design services. He made it clear that we could pay for the design/consultation and do the work ourselves and they have many customers who do that. We are likely to have them back in the summer of 2012 to remove the concrete and give us a design plan to work from.
Description of Work: Brian came out and gave us an estimate for two things: 1. The removal of dozens of old shrubbery stumps along the fenceline perimeter of our yard and along the side of the house, AND 2. The removal of an old concrete walkway leading from the back door to the back gate. The overall estimate was $300 for item one and about $350 for item two (which included putting sod where the concrete had been). For budget reasons we decided to go only with option one for the time being.

Description of Work: We have a small front yard in DC. This comopany came and redesigned it with great suggestions. They put in sod, plants and took out some old hedges and replaces them with azaleas, loriapie (sp?) and other bushes. All of the plantings, including the grass has lasted great a year later.

Went very well. Tell Brian what you need and what your concerns are. Let him come up with the game plan.
Description of Work: Brian and his company completed a tricky poison ivy removal job professionally and on-time. Poison ivy had overrun a wooded commons area, with toxic vines and runners running 40-50 feet up tress as well as along the ground. The situation had become so bad that those who have severe reactions to poison ivy feared for their safety. Brian and his team surveyed the situation, came up with a game plan to protect sensitive residents, and an estimate that was very reasonable, given the scope of the job and the extra care needed to protect the health and safety of those living nearby. Brian and Yard by Yard made two visits several weeks after the job was completed to ensure that no new poison ivy runners had taken root. They also fenced off the area surrounding the affected trees to protect residents from coming into contact with any of the residual toxin that may have been on the tree's bark. I give Yard by Yard my highest recommendation.

We got an estimate from them and gave them the go-ahead. About half way through the project I knew that their estimate had to be low because it was taking a lot longer than anticipated. However, they brought in extra help, never cut corners and never even hinted that they wanted more money to do the job. In the end I'm sure they spent much more time than they estimated but they did a beautiful job on a difficult project. They brought in a carpenter when they needed help cutting some of the angles on the landscaping timbers. The results are beautiful and we are extremely happy with both the work and the professionalism of the crew. We would gladly use them again for any landscaping project that we need done.

Extremely happy with this company and will use and refer people to them in the future. Brian and his crew are terrific. I wish I'd been able to afford to have them do everything I got an estimate for, because the work was excellent. Instead I had them do some smaller parts of the job and paid for a couple of hours of "garden coaching" where Brian and I worked out a plan for my own work on my yard. Really fun and gave me lots of ideas!

Brian came and looked at the mess and gave us a bid. Four days later, he performed the work noted above. It was an exceptional experience from beginning to end. It felt as if we were in an episode of HGTV.
Description of Work: Brian Mahan and his top-notch crew performed a miracle makeover on our front yard as we were preparing to put our house up for sale. He was creative, cost-effective and fun to work with. The crew had to remove the remains of a tree, then add topsoil, a new tree, plants, mulch and sloping. They worked like creative demons transforming a mess into a show stopper. It was a fantastic job -- the talk of the neighborhood. You couldn't do better.

Brian Mahan is by far the best landscaper I've worked with during the 30+ years we've lived in our house in NW Washington. To be blunt, I haven't been much pleased with the several landscaping services we've occasionally used in the past. The others tended to want to redo our landscaping with their own vision of what the yard should look like, and in some cases then executed the work with crews who were very uneven in quality. Yard by Yard Makeovers was a breath of fresh air. Brian Mahan listened to us, leaned over backwards to find ways to work with our existing plantings where possible, and made sensitive and imaginative suggestions to complete our landscaping with additional plantings. He and his crew appeared on time, installed top quality plants, and did a great job of making our existing plantings look great. Overall, this was a fairly extensive project, since we had neglected our yard for two years because of other commitments, our yard suffered from the hard winter of 2009-10, and growing trees have altered our sun/shade balance quite a lot over the decade since our last makeover (by someone else). We couldn't have been more pleased with Brian's work. (On our recommendation, our daughter and son-in-law hired him for a much more modest project, also performed impeccably.)
Description of Work: Brian Mahan of Yard by Yard Makeovers renovated our landscaping, installing a number of new plantings, and trimming and relocating a number of existing plantings. Also trimmed a number of small trees and shrubs.

I liked Brian from the first visit when he came and gave a written estimate. He wrote out all the details and had some great ideas. I added some work I wanted done and he gave me another detailed estimate for the add on -for the work in the side yard. When he came to do the work he had found a rarer and more beautiful plan than what he had planned and gave me the option of either kind. He was polite and sweet and loves what he does. The crew works quickly and neatly and the result is great.

Brian (the owner) came by to give me an estimate. He is friendly, helpful, and offered some really creative solutions to 'editing' our front and backyard. His work crew was quick, efficient, and thorough. He was not the cheapest estimate we received, but we are extremely satisfied with the work.
Description of Work: The yard was in disrepair; the previous family had done little - if anything - in the nine years they lived here prior to our buying the place. Brian did a massive 'spring clean up': They re-mulched all beds, transplanted peonies, tulips, and tiger lilies, laid in new top soil and graded areas near the house properly, re-sodded some areas, installed a shallow underground drain to take rain water away from a shady area of the house to a different spot in the backyard, redefined flower beds, planted 7 tall forsythia, planted several new bushes, removed Ivy, removed leaves, debris, and cut the lawn.

They had left a flyer on our door. We were most pleased because when we bought this house there was mostly grass there and it was a big steep slope and people would feel like they were going to lose their feet under the lawn mower and injure themselves. We had never been able to get anything to grow there. They seemed to know what type of plants would actually survive there and they were right because they are still alive. They were not our favorite plants but that was not our priority. Our priority was to figure out what they could put in that wouldn't die and they were able to do that. We thought we got a good value for our money because of the difficulty of the yard. They seem to know their stuff about what kind of plants belong where. The price was competitive.

When we decided that it was time to update our landscaping, we knew we would need help with everything, including designing the area and choosing plants. Brian Mahan and Yard by Yard is full service. They work with a great landscape architect, Laura Farr. Between them they helped us implement a great plan. The work was performed on time; the crew worked quickly and the yard was perfectly cleaned up on completion. I especially was impressed that Laura went to great length to personally choose all the plants. She would not accept plants that were not up to her standards so we adjusted the plan as needed. Now, 2 years later, my yard looks even more beautiful. Laura Farr

Brian took the time to give a thorough estimate and provide recommendations (for services and plants) in a variety of price ranges--without being pushy. I asked that they be liberal in their pruning, and they did that in a tasteful manner. This is the second time I have used them in the past five years, and once again I'm very pleased with the results.

The Pincipal of the company Brian came to my home Monday evening and walked the property with me and explained what he would do after I told him what I wanted. He then provieded a written estimate on the spot. I excepted his proposal the following day and he returned my call and told me he would be out the next morning. He showed up at the house with three trucks and six workers who were ready to work and the hour they were there before I left the house was amazing to see the work they did. Performed all work in one day, yard looks great and I'm very happy with the work and proud of our yard :)

Brian, the owner, came to our site to perform a fairly detailed estimate. Was flexible in working with our desire to break up work into several phases and estimate accordingly. We proceeded on two of the three phases, and Brian came to the site with his crew to set up and initially supervise. Brian was flexible with taking our input, and with making minor revisions to the plans while on site. The result turned out well, and accomplished what we were after - reducing erosion and run-off, and beautifying the site after major demolition/construction. After several months, all plantings are doing well... with the exception of about $100 worth of phlox that were eaten by local rabbits - not Brian's fault, though.
Description of Work: Regrading of part of sloped site, post-construction. Planting of perennial ground cover, for erosion control. Planting of ornamental perennials. Ammend soil and mulching. River rock border and dry bed, for stormwater run-off. Transplanting of several existing shrubs. Hauling away debris.
