I was looking for curb appeal because I was going to put my house on the market, He is very good at making sure the yards look nice and has great curb appeal.
Description of Work: It was two separate appointments that I had them come out. One in May and one and September. They planted some new trees, removed old trees and grinded down the stumps and roots. They did some weeding and mulching and moved some bushes to better places in my yard. Planted a new maple tree in my front yard.

Initial appt was cancelled. I called to reschedule and didn't hear back so called again a few days later. Rescheduled but then they never showed. Called to ask if they were coming and was told they'd call back to let me know if team was on their way. Never heard back. Had used their services a few years ago and was very pleased so am disappointed with lack of professionalism.

I was surprised, when he finished the project, that my front yard looked ravaged. All the bushes only had foliage on the tops and were sticks below. The bushes that were in need of care looked dead. Everything looked bleak and barren. It was SOOO expensive that I was devastated. I called Brian back about a bush that had been failing and asked him if his taking all the leaves out of it would help it get better. He told me it was diseased (he didn't know what disease) and told me to treat the soil with some special product that I immediately bought and applied according to directions. My yard looked so bad that I comforted myself by telling me that it would grow back better by next year. Well, we had a hard winter and my front yard that used to be lush a year ago, is now sticks. Not only did the ailing plants die, but I have lost a fifty year old Azalea that had been in perfect health. It will cost me a lot of money to replace what could have been saved. I am sure that Brian will used the cold winter and his version of the condition of my plants when he got here as excuses for his failure. The way I see it is; I hired him to treat some sad Azaleas and to spring clean my front yard. His aggressive pruning and lack of knowledge caused my huge loss. There is nothing I can do but to be sorry that I trusted Brian and tell you to call someone else. They did a lot of hard work, I paid the "national debt" for it, and my front yard is ugly.
Description of Work: I called Brian because he was highly recommended by a close friend and he had a great rating on this list. I needed someone to treat some sad looking Azaleas and a favorite Nadenia bush and to Spring clean the front yard. This involved removing vines and weeds from one side of property, bed cleaning and mulching with fertilizer in beds and around trees, pruning all bushes and planting large area with Periwinkle, and some grading around the front foundation of our home. They Planted 3 bushes and put 6 or 7 perennial flowers around mailbox. That is a general description. His workers worked hard all day and were thorough. Brian advised me on Deer resistant plants. He pruned all excising bushes and trees. A lot of work was done. .

This's the third time I've used this company. It's easy to make an appointment. Brian's very informed about plants and trees including which ones are deer resistant, which's quite useful in this area. He and I walked through the front and back yards and discussed the plans for a fall clean up which included trimming bushes, pruning my two cherry trees, removing some small dying trees, replacing some deer damages bushes in my front yard, and mulching. He gave me an estimate after our walk through. I was able to schedule the work quickly by calling his office. His crew did an excellent job. I would use his company again.

Brian was a pleasure to work with. He came out and walked the front and back yards with us several times as we worked through how to makeover the yard. He was patient and had so many good ideas of fixes big and small to really make a difference. He is thoughtful and creative and works with your budget. Brian and his crew came and within a day had transformed our front yard. We liked what thy did so much we decided to redo the backyard Soon after that day - a project we had thought we would put off. Brian and his crew came back and worked their magic in the backyard. They did a great great job. They were very patient and hardworking and pleasant. They cleaned up every day at the end of the day before leaving. I recommend Brian and his team very highly.

Brian hired a very big crew to get our large and physically difficult job done in a single day. They arrived on time, worked extremely hard, and hauled away a massive amount of debris in the process. The crew also cleaned up thoroughly when they finished. I've used Brian before and that job also went very well. We certainly plan to use his services again.
Description of Work: Brian Mahan and his crew cleared out a very large and neglected jungle-like area of our backyard that was full of underbrush, poison ivy, and scraggly trees. He meticulously marked everything that would be removed, and verified it with me as the clearing proceeded. Then the large area was edged and mulched to prepare for landscaping once the weather cools off. He also created a stone-bed area that was eroding due a stream that flows across our yard when it rains. It all looks beautiful and professionally done.

The front and back of our townhouse have never looked this good. The work exceeded our expectations. Brian Mahan is knowledgeable, practical and provided excellent recommendations. He fully explained the project to us and provided a written estimate of the work. On the day of the project he fully explained what needed to be done to his crew, who followed directions precisely. He carefully supervised the project. His workers left the premises spotless. It is obvious that Brian and his crew take pride in their work.
Description of Work: Thorough spring clean-up including a lot of pruning and treating sick plants, removing old mulch and replacing, weeding, fertilizing, resetting brick and stone borders, repairing and resetting flagstone path and replacing some stone, removing and replacing two window wells.

Excellent results! Initially, I felt the estimate was high but after Brian explained what exactly needed to be done, I was satisfied. And after seeing his crew at work, I felt the estimate was more than justified. His crew arrived on time at 8 in the morning and stayed until they were finished after 6 in the evening, with just a short lunch break. The hardest working crew I have ever seen! After all the existing plantings, grass, dirt and root systems were removed and carted away, the area was back filled with new soil and then new sod and plantings were put down. And the rock wall was reassembled perfectly (actually better than before). The work was done was time and as scheduled, the billed amount was exactly the estimate Brian provided and his crew was more than efficient and professional.
Description of Work: Yard by Yard removed invasion bamboo from our back yard. All existing plantings and grass had to be removed and discarded as well as 6 to 8 inches of soil in an expansive area in order to remove all of the bamboo roots. An existing rock wall had to be dismantled in order get to all the roots.

Brian Mahan, owner, showed up promptly for our scheduled consultation and provided excellent advice related to the services I requested as well as suggestions for general maintenance and landscaping. Brian is very knowledgeable and passionate about his profession and he provided a written estimate at the end of the consultation. I received two other bids from competing companies and while their estimates were somewhat lower, I felt more comfortable placing my landscape in Brian?s capable hands. Brian and his team of highly skilled and professional workers showed up on the scheduled morning and Brian willingly adjusted the estimate to accommodate a couple of additions to the original bid. After completing the extensive list of projects, all debris was thoroughly cleaned up and removed when they completed the job about 5 hours later. I couldn?t be happier with the quality of work performed and was especially thrilled with the Leyland cypress hedges. Fantastic!
Description of Work: Hand pruned a pyramid-shaped 20’ holly; hand trimmed and shaped a 50+ year old boxwood; trimmed, pruned and shaped both sides of two hedges of 25’ Leyland cypress (total of about 18 shrubs) and reduced height by several feet; trimmed and shaped two large burning bushes, a privet, and a large acuba; aggressively pruned a large, overgrown and neglected crape myrtle; and thinned and trimmed back a large 20' yew.

We are very pleased with the landscaping projects done by Brian and his crew at Yard by Yard Makeovers. Brian is meticulous in his designs and choice of plant material. He does not just go to a single nursery for plants, but looks all over the region to find the best of each kind of shrub or tree. He kept me informed and called several times to let me know about what plants and trees were available and what my options were. He was very responsive to my ideas and pointed out potential problems with specific plants so that better alternatives could be found.. He has a great deal of knowledge about landscape materials and this is evident in the way he works. At times, he can seem very opinionated, but that's OK since he knows a lot more than homeowners. When the day arrived for implementing the landscape plan, the work was done efficiently and neatly. They also dealt with issues like removing low quality existing mulch and replacing it with high quality pine bark mulch. He consulted with me about the placement of each plant - something that other landscapers usually fail to do. The prices for various parts of the project were high, but considering the planning and effort that went into the design and selection of materials, it was worth paying more for a better short and, hopefully, long term results.
Description of Work: Yard by Yard Makeovers removed and replace more than half of the shrubs in our front yard. They also did some pruning of existing trees and planted a new tree in the front yard. An additional project was regarding and area where water from heavy rains was collecting at the rear foundation of the house. They created a channel with river stones to redirect the flow of water. Old mulch of poor quality was removed and replaced with high quality mulch and spread weed preventer under it.

Brian and his team (5) arrived very early in the morning. They did an amazing job. My garden, patio and surrounding area were entirely transformed. Not only was the area clean and looked like a real garden again, it appeared twice the size. Brian even returned to remove heavy ivy on a dogwood tree I had added to the scope of work. While the price for Brian's work is not cheap, it shouldn't be, he's a professional Master Gardener who knows what to save, what to tear out and how to prune properly. If you are just need brush clearance, look elsewhere. I plan to continue to use Brian.
Description of Work: Brian Mahan, owner and Master Gardener, reviewed the scope of work requested and made valuable suggestions that added to the overall improvement. He provided a written estimate for review on the spot. Brian and his knowledgable team completely weeded, dug out, pruned, sprayed, and mulched an entirely overgrown garden and patio area. Due to a torn rotator cuff, I had been unable to work in my garden all summer and it was a horrific mess of weeds and vines. Brian and his staff knew the difference between valuable plants and weeds and did a great job pruning flowering trees and bushes. My garden and surrounding area is set for Spring.

They did a really nice job. We have been very pleased with their work. Their price was reasonable, it was a little expensive, but not for what they did. They'd come in and work for four or five hours and have it done and then they were moving on to their next job so, you know, they weren't hanging around on the job site. They came in, they did it, they got out, and then they let us know "Okay we ordered the plants, we'll be back on Tuesday of next week, and we'll have it put in by then". And then they'd come in that day and do the same thing. Four hours, bam, done. Yep, it was pretty good.

My experience with Brian and Pam from Yard by Yard was excellent. Brian came himself to give an estimate. He was very thorough with every area of my yard. I could tell that he is very creative and generally happy in his line of work. For my yard, what I wanted was a general overhaul and clean up. I had nothing planted, only removed. This house had been unoccupied for over a year and there was basically a forest starting up towards the back of it. Brian understood what I wanted and gave me exactly that. My yard is clean, trimmed, and bigger than I thought! I really appreciated that he listened to what I was asking for and delivered on the plans we made together.

Brian came by to discuss the move, inspect the plants, choose which he thought were viable, and the pros and cons of different placement areas. 2 weeks later his crew came by, transplanted the plants, remulched parts of the bed, and cleaned up. It was professional, smooth, and well done. I've worked with YbY and Brian (the owner) for 3 years now and am very satisfied with his work, creativity, and professionalism. His crew is efficient, courteous, and skilled.

I have a large slope in the front of my house that is horrible to maintain. It gets punishing sun in the summer and is very difficult to access. And it looked awful. I finally gave up and called in the experts for advise and estimates. Yard by Yard (and Brian, the owner) was the only company to spend more than 5 minutes looking at the property and giving me ideas. He spent at least an hour working to find what would work for me and the space. I'm not a gardener by any stretch so it was extremely helpful to have his vision and creativity. His office called before he arrived to let me know he would be a bit late to give the free estimate (much appreciated in both regards). I appreciated that he gave me estimates that varied in scope of work and price depending on how much I wanted to/ could spend. Considering all the time he spent and the clear passion he has for gardening and bringing beauty to a home, I would say I got more than I paid for, really. Because he had such good ideas, I wanted to do everything he suggested - and I'm so glad I did. His crew showed up on time, were professional, FAST, cleaned every bit of the mess up. The difference they made to my home in a matter of hours was amazing! Brian was there to help place the plants and gather my input as well. And despite the fact that it's November, the plants still had some color to them. I could not have asked for a better experience. I look forward to the seasons when all of these plants show their color - I am now no longer embarrased to stand in my front yard and I'm sure my neighbors are thrilled! I would recommend Yard by Yard again without hesitation - just a pleasure to work with.

Brian and his crew came right out when I called, and Brian essentially drew my garden design on the spot with a can of spray paint. His ideas were spot on and he understood exactly what I had in mind. He was willing to reuse the plants I had in order to keep costs down, dividing and moving them to new and better spots in the garden. His workers were efficient, polite and cleaned everything up beautifully. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and my new garden is just lovely. I couldn't be more pleased and I certainly plan to hire him again in the future.

If I could have given Brian Mahan and his crew from Yard by Yard Makeovers an A++ I would. Working with this company was a pleasure from start to finish. There is an office person to take calls and they respond promptly to voice messages. Brian was able to come for an estimate within a few days. He broke the job into parts individually priced on his estimate and was able to start the job within two weeks. He seemed very knowledgable about the plants and trees on my property and wanted to preserve as many of the trees and plants as possible while completing the cleanup. This job was a three day project and he met with me after the second day to go over the work. Honestly, it was like a jungle along my property lines in the back and they took care of it all. The clean up was amazing and my back yard looks like a totally different place, even better than when I moved in. I would use Yard by Yard Makeovers again in a heartbeat. They're the best.

Brian responded to our request for an estimate within a few days of my phone call. He spent well over an hour and a half with a free consult and estimate which was in the same ballpark as another recommended landscaper(who charged $100 for the estimate). Yard by Yard started within ten days of receipt of the deposit as promised on the contract. Their crew of five incredibly competent and meticulous hard-working men worked for five full days -- in the heat. Brian was regularly there and in touch with me.I have almost an acre with lots of flora and he is very open to the idea of transplanting "volunteers", using native and deer resistant plants. He is creative and open-minded and he listens. He used excellent mulch and high grade topsoil and beautiful stones. I am planning to continue to use his services for other projects throughout the year. My husband and I are completely delighted with our makeover -- and so are our neighbors!
Description of Work: In a large front and side yard - hand weeding perennial garden, shrub pruning and removal, tree shaping/elevating/, ground grading, topsoil and mulch application, drainage slurry, sodding, aprons of delaware river stone, preparation for transplanting and adding shrubs and perrennials. Excellent experience from start to finish. Owner (Brian) meet with me and provided several options that would have allowed for "staging" the work at different intervals if so desired. He also provided a design with several possible plant options always keeping in mind the need for the plants to be deer resistant. He provided a written estimate after our meeting. Once contract executed, he kept me fully informed of his schedule. On the day of the work, Brian and a crew of five showed up as scheduled. Everyone was friendly but work oriented. All proceeded very quickly and professionally with all the work done same day. Brian is extremely knowledgeable, courteous and customer focused. The end result exceeded my expectations. Yard by Yard is one the very best contractors I have dealt with in last 25 years. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Work entailed the cleaning, hand weeding and end edging of all beds. Existing foundation plants/shrubs were removed by the root along with a large Yew (18 feet). All holes were properly filled in and new topsoil and fertilizer provided before the new plantings were installed. Beds were mulched and all debris removed from the property.
