S&K Roofing, Siding, and Windows

The severe storm of June 29, 2012 (Derecho) caused a tree to fall onto our house, causing damage to the roof, its support structure, guttering and siding. Multiple calls to roofers yielded one immediate response, S&K Roofing. They came to put a tarp over the hole in the roof and some days later returned to remove roof insulation that had begun to issue an odor indoors. Normally, the first company to respond, especially under these circumstances, might not necessarily turn out the be the best choice, but one reason for my calling S&K Roofing was the experience of a close friend who suffered a similar calamity a year earlier. Under less urgent circumstances he had used S&K Roofing for his repairs and was most satisfied with S&K's responsiveness, professionalism and pricing. Despite the demand for its services in the wake of the storm, S&K did not try to charge more than it normally would. While I did not seek other estimates, I knew the approximate cost of a roof replacement for my size house. I also knew that State Farm, the insurer, would not pay more than the standard materials and labor rates for my area. S&K did all the work for within the numbers specified by State Farm. More than that, S&K worked with State Farm to iron out a number of disparities in measurements (roof area), and related work requirements for our roof job, in effect going to bat for us. Yes, it helped S&K as well but they did it with professionalism and factual support, which impressed the State Farm claims representative and resulted in quick resolution of the disparities.. S&K is a huge company that can be enormously competitive in pricing, and it knows its products, offers choices and makes practical and realistic recommendations. Indeed, there were 11 S&K employees working on our roof to accomplish a fast and tidy job of old roof removal and new roof installation (with repair of the broken support members). They showed up when they said they would, they finished when they said they would, and they came back immediately after I found some roofing nails on the lawn - running the magnetic sweeper around the entire property to recover any and all errant nails! I have had roof work done in the past by a number of roofers. While there were various combinations of good pricing, professionalism and responsiveness, I must say that S&K Roofers rises to the top as the best of the bunch in all three categories. I would not hesitate to recommend Don and his company to anyone for roof and related work.

S&K was fantastic to work with! We were in desperate need of ridge vent installation (garage and main house) and gutter repair (and replacement in some areas). I called two companies prior, and they both told me ?We are too busy to help you?. I was so disappointed. I?m so glad we came across S&K. They too are extremely busy, but they made time for us and fit our project into their scheduling. They came promptly on the designated day of service. All the guys were professional and hard working. They worked fast too. They came on a day where a bad thunderstorm was looming. They worked right up until the torrential downpour started. They gave themselves ample time to get to a stopping point, so there was no water damaged my attic or roof. They stayed until the storm died down and finished the project. That?s dedication! Our house and garage are significantly cooler since the install and our gutters now run water properly (instead of dump over the side). While they were up on the roof, they also briefly inspected our chimney ? which we?re thankful for. We will definitely be using S&K again in the future. Extremely happy customers here!

We have used S & K Roofing Siding & Windows repeatedly now for a few different things. They came out and replaced fascia before and we had them continue around the house. We have been happy with their work. The company has a good reputation and I have been happy with their promptness and quality of work. They probably weren't the cheapest price of the people who came out.

This was the first time hiring S&K. I actually tried to hire their competitor as the competitor patched my roof for free while I saved up for the new roof. The quotes were $2000 different with S&K bringing the lower quote. The day of roofing was a rough start. The truck unloading the shingles couldn't put them on the roof because of all the power cables crossing the yard and road. The crew didn't show up on time. I called S&K office to check the status. While I was on hold the office contacted the crew; the crew lead stated they were at my house. That was all a bit goofy. I had trouble communicating with the crew lead due to language barrier. It would have been nice if just one person was fluent. I still have some questions.....The house is old so I wasn't surprised when they had to replace some of the plywood. The old plywood looked pretty rough and I wish now they would have replaced more. The crew stayed late and the work was completed that day even with the threat of thunder and lightening later in the afternoon. They worked efficiently and did a great job. It's 7 years later and the roof looks like new and seems to be doing its job just fine.

The first visit was to install the footer and replace one column. The column looked nicer than I had expected. I was grateful and surprised that a barrier was put on the ground to protect the footer from my dogs. The second column went up later and it looks great too. The gutters look terrific. They screwed in my flexible drains which was a nice touch and left some extra screws for future. Cleanup was great and the crews were very pleasant and professional.

This is the second time I have used S&K. They do a great job from start to finish. I called to receive an estimate to replace my basement sliding glass door with a french door, replace my french door upstairs with a new french door and all of my old windows. I went with the BF Cabernet P-X6 Green Shield windows which I investigated online and they are a good quality window. Their price was a little more than another company I looked at but the windows the other company used were of terrible quality. Their salesman Jack was helpful and even suggested I go to the local hardware store to purchase my doorlocks rather than purchasing the locks through them as they would be much more expensive. The windows and doors were ordered. They arrived in about 2 weeks and a date was scheduled for installment. Their guys arrived on time and did a great job. I was concerned about how they might handle the threshold in the basement as the new door fit into the space differently than the old one but they handled it with no problem and it looks great. It took two days to complete the work and they cleaned up after themselves nicely. The new vinyl wrapping around the windows on the outside of the house looks wonderful. I received a call the following day to follow up on the job and ask if there were any outstanding issues. The windows and doors are beautiful and work great. I can't say enough about what a great experience I've had working with this company.

Our roof has been leaking on and off since we purchased the house we are in two years ago. Although we have yet to fully solve the issue, S & K has been extremely attentive and helpful in working on our roof. They recently applied an aluminum coat over our entire roof. Paul, the salesperson we worked with, was very professional and even gave us advice while we were on the roof about tips we could do ourselves. Paul called every morning after we signed the contract to give us updates on the work that needed to be done. If he didn't answer the phone when I called him, he would call right back. Overall, our experience has been a very good one with S & K. We have a flat roof with a skylight so although we are not positive we have pinpointed the leaking, we feel confident that S & K can fix whatever the problem may be, if it occurs again.

I have had nothing but exceptional experiences with S&K. Many years ago we had the siding replaced and this was our first experience with the company. They were highly recommended at that time from the builder who originally built our house. Based on that job I called them when it was time to replace our roof. We chose a premium synthetic slate product which was installed with skill and care. I insisted that the owner of the company handle my job personally and he was more than happy to oblige me on that front. They have separate quality control personnel who visit each job site on a regular basis. As you can see from the services listed that they performed, our job was significant and extensive. Lots of opportunities for things to go wrong. Nothing did. After each stage of the job, someone from the office calls to make sure everything was done to your satisfaction. I urge you to strongly consider S&K when starting a renovation project. To me, they are the gold standard.

The repair was so fast. I could hear them on the roof and 20 minutes later they were gone. When I went outside to look at the work I could not tell which piece had been replaced. I had used S & K seven years ago to replace the siding on my home and I was happy with them at that time as I am now. I received the estimate on a Tuesday called them on Thursday and mailed the deposit. They called on Friday to confirim they received it and some one would be out in the next 7 to 10 days. Four days later the work was done... No mess and I didn't need to be home...........

When I called, the woman who took my information was professional and helpful. She told me when I could expect a return call to have an appointment scheduled. She said within 2 business days, but I got a call from Mark just a couple of hours later. He scheduled an appointment within two business days from my call and showed up promptly at the scheduled time. Mark quickly assessed the situation and told me he could repair the roof that day for $50 less than it would cost to send out a crew if I wanted him to proceed. At the time, I didn't have any other estimates, but the cost seemed reasonable so I told him to proceed. He let me know that a shingle was missing and that he did not have a matching one with him ... but that he would stop by next time he was in the area and replace the shingle for me. A couple of hours after Mark left, I received an emailed quote from another contractor who had come out before S&K. That company wanted $610 for the same work done by S&K (they also indicated that all 3 pipe collars needed to be replaced). Needless to say, I am thrilled with the quality of service I received and the price that I paid. I wouldn't hesitate to call this company again.

They responded to my call promptly, came by within 24 hours to estimate the damage. The repairs were completed promptly and completely.

S&K was one of four contractors we contacted for a new roof. Their salesman was knowledgeable and professional and we thought their estimate very fair considering we were asking them to remove an asbestos roof. Other contractors either mumbled about getting back to us once they had gotten advice about the asbestos, or came up with a quote much much higher. S&K were knowledeable about our old roof and assured us they would take care of it. On the day, S&K arrived promptly and went to work. We liked the way they covered our plants and cleaned up as they went along. And we were thrilled that they included copper flashing to match what we already had since the quote didn't specifically mention it. We have a Dutch Colonial which meant extra work but they managed to put the last nail into the roof just before the heavens opened and a heavy rain began to fall. It was a great test of the roof which proved to be very sound as we knew it would. They came back the next day to install a new cooper gutter. We loved the job they did (as did all our neighbors) and we highly recommend S&K to anyone who is looking for a new roof.

S&K did an excellent job at a reasonable price, they didn't try to sell me something more costly in price that I didn't need.

We recently had a new roof put on and were extremely impressed with the crew (James & 2 other fellows) who not only worked continuously, but clearly cared about the quality job they were doing and fanatical about the clean up once the job was completed. We used S&K before that for replacement windows & also were extremely satisfied with the product (yes, they truly made a noticeable difference in our heating bill) and also the installers. Very professional and courteous crew. The whole process with S&K is very easy and they clearly want to get the job done right the first time. The owner, Don, is just the most wonderful person you would ever want to deal with - fair, upfront and gave an honest assessment of the type of windows and roof would be best for our house. I have referred a few people to the company and all have given positive comments on a job well done. You get what you pay for and in this case, S&K gives you top notch products and service. As an aside, they are also very active in supporting community events whenever possible - a bonus in my opinion. Again, just a fantastic overall experience!

We recently discovered multiple areas of extensive water damage to the siding and structure of our home. The root cause was an old roof with inadequate flashing where awkward roof pitches joined other sections of the house. I met with Don from S & K Roofing, Siding and Windows Inc and was extremely impressed with his professionalism and "know how". He immediately recognized the problem and proposed a solution that has worked out wonderfully. Don was very conscious of our budget and very helpful with his recommendations. The proposal was sent promptly and any questions that I had were addressed right away. The crew that was on site was professional, courteous and treated our property with respect throughout the time the work was being done. They did a great job cleaning up when they left and we were not inconvenienced in the least. As stressful as it was to find ourselves in that unexpected situation, we couldn't be happier with the end result. The roof looks fantastic! We called S&K (after seeing info on them on Angie's list) to fix a roof leak that we noticed dripping on the ceiling and asked that they give us a quote for replacement gutters while they were at it. Their representative Sean Toms came out to look over the job and take notes for an estimate. The roof leak worried me a lot because wet wood made me think of expensive replacement, but he checked out the roof and the attic and decided the roofing and plywood and rafters we fine (whew!) but nails and flashing needed to be fixed near the chimney. They took care of that later the same day. I REALLY appreciated that they didn't oversell the job and want to replace more than needed, and in these recent rains I went up in the attic, and it's nice and dry there from the fixes he did. We also needed about 140 feet of gutters to be replaced on the house. The house inspector told us over a decade ago that the old gutters were on their last legs, and I finally got tired of replacing porch boards rotting away from the constant drip, so we asked S&K for replacement 5-inch seamless gutters to be made and installed. Since the "gutter-making-machine" would be onsite, I also asked that two lengths of seamless gutter be fabricated for the barn, which I'll take responsibility for and install later. The quote process worked great: A couple days later, their quote showed up via email. Then, a couple of days after that, a written one arrived in the mail. I took this as a reminder to get this job underway -- the only delay in this project was in me signing and scheduling! Sean and two gutter guys came over on a Thursday to replace the gutters, and Sean did a great job, not just on the roof and gutter work, but he also did a great job explaining every little facet of the work to us. He's one of the BEST I've ever dealt with. Here's something interesting: They subcontracted out the gutter fabrication to Gutters-for-Less, and you might say we could call Gutters-for-Less directly. I'll answer that with this: No discredit to the gutter fellows, but from start to finish, Sean from S&K was making sure the gutter guys did the job right, from where to put ladders and avoid damaging shingles, on to alerting them to plants below. It was like our house was his house, and he was taking care of it. The gutters were up and installed cleanly in a few hours, and they cleaned up behind themselves very well. I was surprised how much better the new gutters look on the house; I guess you get used to old, dirty, sagging ones over time and don't realize it. The gutters are working great as well. A tip from Mike the gutter guy: If you have a ranch house and can do so every few weeks before it piles up, get a leaf blower up there on a dry day and blow out the gutters -- it's ten times easier than cleaning by hand! S&K even called back a day or two later to ask how it went, and they encourage you after the work is done to review them on their website -- seems that they definitely want to do right for the customer. In the end, given our experience I know we will absolutely call S&K back when we need more work done, and we heartily recommend them now to friends and neighbors.

I appreciated their prompt response to my inquiry.. During my very brief association with Charlie, I received very caring and professional interest in my deck request.. The day before the appointment, I received a deal that i plan to accept.. I would recommend this company, for their professional attitude, even in making an appointment.

Let me start off by saying that my biggest pet peeve is communication. Communication is important in any relationship whether it is a husband and wife or a homeowner and repairman. My experience with S&K Roofing went downhill when the work was performed. Up to this point I was satisfied with Paul Ritter, a sales manager, and the company. I am not sure if the workers were actually S&K workers or subcontractors. When they pulled up they were in a truck with a different company name on it. Either way, they need lessons on communication. Paul told me that I did not have to be there for the work to be completed but after having a bad experience with another repairman I make it a point to be home for any repair. When the workers arrived they started to unload their equipment and they looked at what needed to be done to my house. The first issue I had was that neither of them knocked on my door to introduce themselves or to say we're here to start work. So after waiting awhile I decided to go out to meet them to make sure they understood what I wanted done. The workers said they understood and I thought everything was "good to go." I go back inside to do some chores while the workers got started. After getting done what I needed to do I go back outside to check on them. When I get outside I see that the workers are gone, the second down spout is not installed the way I wanted it, and to top it off they dumped the leaves from the gutter they replaced in my neighbor's yard. I immediately called Paul to tell him what happend and he said that he would call the office and take care of it. A couple of minutes later I get a call from the workers and they explain why they did not install the down spout the way I wanted it. When I didn't agree with them I feel like they were trying to bully me into leaving it the way it was. I told them that they would need to come back and install it the way I wanted it. True to their word they came back and fixed it. If the workers would have done a few simple things to communicate with me I believe this would have been a better experience.

The S&K representatives were a pleasure to work with for this flat roof job. The entire house roof is one part flat and the other part shingle. I requested an estimate for an entire new roof. This property is a rental property. S & K understood the nature of the property and worked with me in whatever way I needed to accommodate the tenants and me. They came to the house, looked at the job, provided samples and information and an estimate. At my request, they worked with me to split the job into two -- first flat roof replacement; then shingle roof replacement to be done this spring. So this job was for the flat roof replacment only. I am very pleased with their work and will complete the shingle roof replacement job with them this spring. Their follow up is outstanding. Note that if you ask a lot of questions of contractors, as I like I do, you may end up talking to several different people depending on your questions, i.e., there's one person to talk with about the mechanics and technical aspects of the job; one person who handles payment; another person who handles scheduling, I think. After a while, you'll get to know everyone, but if you're uncomfortable interacting with many different company reps., have no worries. You can develop your own point of contact by asking for him/her and that person will pass your message along to the right individual who will respond. S & K was responsive, professional, great follow up and follow through and also very accommodating. They will communicate with you in whatever way suits you best --whether it's via email, telephone or in person-- which was important to me as I cannot be reached easily via telephone during the daytime. The work performed was punctual, quality, neat and handled professionally. I will definitely use them again.

We really liked them. We would give them a positive review. The quality is so far so good. The first time they were supposed to come they actually didn't show up, but they immediately corrected the situation.

The process was very smooth. The estimate was prompt, phone calls were received quickly, and contract documents were received via email and postal mail. Scheduling was smooth. Work was great. I was really impressed by the extra touches. The gutter crew moved all my deck furniture so they could do the work. When they were done, they used a blower to clean the deck and put everything back the way they had found it. I had several follow up questions and SK sent someone out immediately to address them. They even take before/after pictures which helped me understand the technical terms better.

Very well. The workers took one day. Covered every shrub in my and my neighbors yards and cleaned up very well after.

It was a bit difficult getting in touch with the sales staff. And, after I received their bid for the work, they never called to follow up and see if I wanted the work done.

They were very efficient and made the whole process easy. They got back to me quickly to let me know when the work would begin. They kept their word, did great work and were very professional.
