S&K Roofing, Siding, and Windows

I originally contacted them on the recommendation of our insurance agent because of potential hail damage. They were very quick to come out and inspect the roof. We did end up having damage, and they (specifically Tom) were very helpful in dealing with us as well as our insurance company to get the estimate figured out. They were quick to schedule the work and completed both the roof and the gutters over two days. The team that completed the roof did an excellent job and cleaned everything up. The team that did the gutters also did an excellent job on the install, however, after they left, we did find some nails and other debris that had not been cleaned up. The only bad experience we had was when we went to the showroom. We went to take a look at the different shingle options as well as to see how the no-worry gutters worked. When we walked in the door, the receptionist did not greet us. She was on the phone at the time, so we didn't think too much of it. We then entered the showroom and there was another individual helping someone else. He also didn't say anything to us. Again, we chalked it up to he was helping someone else and figured someone else would come and help us. We walked around for about 10-15 minutes, with no one acknowledging us. We finally just left, after becoming very frustrated. As we walked out, the receptionist was off the phone and didn't say anything to us as we left. I did let Tom know about this, and he was very apologetic. Overall, we are very happy with their work. Besides the experience at the showroom, we were very pleased with everyone we interacted with at S&K.

S&K is an excellent company to do buisness with. All of their employees at all levels with whom I dealt were courteous, helpful and knowledgeable. Special thanks to Mr. McCurry for working with me in adjusting the original proposal and allowing me to take rather belatedly the 5% Angie's List discount. I can't say enough about this company and will certainly contact them for further work on my home. I have recommended them to friends and neighbors.

Insulation crew came first, we were prepared for insulation dust & dirt from the attic but there was very little. The crew worked swiftly and did an excellent job. I went into the attic after they finished to check the work, it all looked good, and then I was able to see more during the roof replacement when they removed several sheets of damaged plywood. No areas missed. Roof work was delayed twice due to rain but after rescheduling they arrived on time. The crew was very friendly and courteous and very careful not to damage our landscaping. The old roof was removed and all debris loaded in their truck, no mess left. I think we have found 3 nails since they left. Job took 2 days, new roof & skylights installed. We have had a couple days of rain since the job was finished and no leaks. I went up on the roof several times during installation to check on vents, plywood replacement, skylights and roof work, it all looked good. I got quotes from 2 other companies, prices were about the same on all 3 but S&K included a couple of things the others did not. They are a very professional company and I highly recommend them. I have 4 sliding glass doors that need to be replaced, I waited until they finished the roof to see how they performed. I am getting ready to order the doors from them. Excellent company.

The price for the roof was relatively high. We decided to go with another company.

1. Met with owners on several occasion to discuss their recommendations and select appropriate products to meet our goals. Went with their recommendations on all products and glad we did. No pressure, they just presented facts. Entire staff was very pleasant to deal with. 2. Doors were installed first. Crew arrived on time, very professional, very carful not to mess up house, completed quickly. 3. Windows we installed at the same time. crew cleaned up any mess when they finished each day. Job was completed in several days. 4. Siding crew arrived on schedule. To make sure the job was the best it could be the foreman made several suggestions that enhanced the installation and cost very little addition money. The recommendation were extremely important. They did things to improve the project regardless of the additional time it took. 5. Gutters and downspouts installed 6. Tin roof installed over bay window. Color did not match what we were expecting. After contacting the company a new roof was installed several days later. No problem, they did what they say they would do. 7. Any problems that occurred we quickly resolved. This is a great company to do business with. Customer service is first class.

We hired S&K to build a sun room addition on our home. Because the plan was to use the room as an office, it had to be a 4-season room. Tommy at S&K came out to talk to us about the project and show us the manufacturer's website. We discussed the challenges of making it a 4-season room, as it was being built on top of an existing ground level deck structure. He recommended installing heated ceramic tile flooring, as well as a climate control unit that both heats and cools. It being a custom build, it took a little time for the manufacturing - about 5 weeks or so. But that time frame was in line with what they told us in the beginning, so it was expected. Once all of the materials arrived, the project got started. We were surprised at how quickly it all came together. The only delays were with the county coming out for inspections. Other than that, things went as planned on S&K's side. We hired a flooring contractor to do the heated flooring, and another contractor to do stucco on the wall that was previously vinyl siding which also went well. I took pictures along the way, which S&K has used on their website if you want to see it. The end result was even better than expected. The room is absolutely gorgeous. I work from home, so I spend up to 10 hours a day 5 or 6 days a week in it. I am surrounded by nature (I saw a fox come by this morning!) and love watching the birds at my feeders all day. I also get to watch the snow fall in the winter, while I am comfy cozy inside. If we ever move, I am going to have to replicate this room exactly! I just love it.

We had to complement every one of the S&K workers on doing a fantastic job. They were all pleasant and friendly and did everything they could to be respectful of our house and our privacy. The crews arrived on time as promised and (except a rain delay on the siding installation due to the weather) completed on time as promised. They were all friendly, smiling and seemed happy to be working on the job. This helped us (me) be much more relaxed during this stressful time. All of the foremen for each part of the job (roof, windows, siding, gutters) were fantastic, but I want to give extra kudos to the windows foreman and the siding foreman. They went above and beyond to make sure the job was done professionally and completely. They were all pleasant and kept us informed and walked us around the house as each part was completed. We were pleasantly surprised that all of the materials for the improvements arrived on time (the siding arrived the day before) and were correct and complete. Not one problem that I know of. (oh-except they were short one set of shutters which the foreman quickly fixed - he went back to the supplier and retrieved the missing set.) Several years ago through Lowe's or Home Depot we had the four windows in the lower level replaced and we had several problems with that job - wrong windows delivered, they were measured incorrectly and one was damaged. And that was only for four windows. We couldn?t be more pleased with the work S&K performed. The yard was left in superior condition. You almost couldn't tell they'd been there. We did find some nails around, but they tried hard to find them all. There was a lot of roofing and siding being ripped off the house and loose nails were expected. Additionally, I want to compliment the office staff for keeping us informed as to the status of each of the jobs. When the windows team was stuck in traffic, we received a call from the office with a time update. We?ve received several follow-up calls the following days to check on the work. The scheduling of the multiple jobs in succession was seamless.

I researched seven different roofing companies with a friend who also needed a new roof. We both agreed that S&K, based on warranties, materials, and price, were head-and-shoulders above the rest. But what made me really trust S&K was the honesty and integrity of the representative who presented the bid. He didn?t push the most expensive material on me, saying that the basic material would more than satisfy my purposes for a rental property, for at least the next 30 years. He also bid the job on the job itself, and not the area in which the property was located (like many others had). The team working on the roof was a great group of men, who were extremely appreciative of the refreshments I provided, and completely protected and cleaned the area around the house. This process took eight months--from the beginning of the search to the beautiful end product. It was well worth the wait and effort in settling on S&K!! (And I was not asked to write this!)

They’re very good. I’ve used them multiple times even on my previous house. On my current house, I’ve used them multiple times. I work directly with one their estimators, Micky and we have that relationship and I like that very much. They are very competent in what they do and they care a lot.

Called to arrange an appointment for a rather large roofing project - house and large outbuilding in Phoenix - the "receptionist" on the telephone was rude and ignorant. S&K owner can thank her for them losing any chance on the job bidding. I'll pass the word that they have no manners or any sense of customer service - that's where a business begins and ends.

The quote was about $19,000. I felt like it was a fair quote. The pricing is fair.

They were very professional and reliable. They stood behind the service they preform.

In 2008 they put an addition on my home and from the beginning, there were plumbing issues throughout every area where their incompetent plumber worked. It came to a head several months ago when we would turn on the shower or bathtub and the water would rain down into our addition. Long story short, the cheap, incompetent plumber that they sent to our home put the pipes in wrong and it finally impacted the tub. We called S & K a few months ago and they sent a man out to look (twice!) Because we never heard back (which was rude) I contacted the company by email (they don't return calls) and the owner told me that the work is not under warranty any longer. My issue is that the plumbing was clearly put in wrong in the first place. I've now had to have the bathtub removed totally and we have had to start over to get the plumbing right. This shoddy company was a nightmare to work with from start to finish and they are still costing us money. I would strongly urge people to think twice and do some research before allowing them in their home. They work with a cast of unprofessional characters and will hire anything to work in people's homes. The goal is for them to save money at your expense. Their plumber was a totally clueless incompetent---but I blame them for using him. UPDATE: Because this company was deceptive in its response, I will clarify. They claim I took 4 years to pay them. That's a LIE. The initial fee was over $100,000 which they got IMMEDIATELY! What happened was that THEIR contractor made an error and placed a bathroom in the wrong place in my home. As a result, the square footage increased, kicking up the fee. That, coupled with a few structural changes in the home cause my fee to sky rocket to $18,000 above the $100,000+ I already was charged! I got them to knock some of the fee off due to errors they caused. I then IMMEDIATELY paid them $6,000 extra, totally outside of my budget. And the balance I paid over a couple of years because I did not have it. They got EVERY DIME. Regarding his comment that I went 6 years without calling, here is the TRUTH. Every bit of plumbing that their incompetent plumber put in my home was problematic. So out of my own pocket during those 6 years I was having plumbing fixed. It started with toilet #1. Then toilet #2. Then it was kitchen sink. I paid for his horrible mistakes out of my own pocket. THEN......to my shock, the bath tube started to rain into my living room. It took 6 years for his shoddy work to show up in the bath tub. He PUT THE PIPES IN WRONG. They should have come back to fix it FOR FREE because their plumber put the pipes in wrong in the first place. These people are beneath the gutter. It's that simple.

It went very well. The service was prompt and done well and cleaned up.

They were timely and cleaned up after everything. They got the job done in the time frame that they said. I'm pleased with them.

How did it go? It didn't. I want to start by saying I am a strike 3 kind of person. I originally asked for an estimate a couple years ago and S&K was able to pull up the old estimate, update it and email. Very good. The problem came when I had questions, the signing and giving payment. The estimate was in a paragraph with language that I didn't understand. I just wanted the venting. So I asked for someone to come and go over the estimate for the basic venting. As it turns out the guy came out, thought I said something else, said he would get back to me at left. Strike one. Didn't hear from them for days until I got a phone call from Charlie. Charlie was angry with me because he said he was not able to get a hold of me. When I tried to explain the history, he just wanted to move on...did I want the service or not. Wow. Strike 2. So I opened Angies List to find someone else and saw that S&K were from my town and I wanted to support our local business. I called again. I talked to Jack who wanted to help. I wanted to only deal with him at that point. I asked if I could get the basic estimate. He said he would get back to me. The original guy calls back and now I am embarrassed. So now I'm talking with the guy who left me hanging last time. UGH Strike 3. Meanwhile they send me another estimate with the basic install, but I still don't understand the language. Jack explains the language and recommends the first estimate because I would be missing essential work. That would be a great thing to know when I originally asked. So I asked Jack to schedule the ridge vent part of the estimate. He said he would do that ASAP and let me know in the morning. That was two days ago. I give up. And now they have my down payment. I think I need to find someone that wants to work with me. :(

They did a really good job working on my roof. It's a product thats going to last around 20 years.

The shutters were installed on operating hinges, and it was a fairly complicated installation on brick. All went well, and I was very pleased with the project. This is the second time I have used S & K Roofing and am about to use them for Hardie Plank siding installation.

Overall, I felt that I was being misled and asked to pay much more for unnecessary work. I was referred to this company by my real estate agent after my previous roofer had retired. I cannot recommend the provider as a result of my interactions with them.

The guy who came out and gave us the estimate was in a little bit of a hurry. He first told us that nothing needed to be done to our roof but our buyers were requesting repairs. We were really in a bad situation with that so we just went forward with it because we were really in a bad time constraint to get the repairs done for selling the house. It took them quite a while and a good bit of back and forth to actually get the work scheduled and to be on that calender and get them out here, so that was a little bit stressful. The price was reasonable because it was a little lower than we expected to hear.

The estimator, Mickey, was very nice and professional. He gave me a lot of information and brochures about their company and the products they use. I did not choose this contractor to do the work, because their price was more than I wanted to pay. They also insisted that they would not reuse my existing gutters, and downspouts, which added a lot to the price of the job. I'm sure their work is fabulous, but this house is not worth such a big investment of my money.

We used Angie's List and got a number of estimates. They were not the cheapest but we liked our interaction with the sales representative. They have a showroom and we were able to go out there to have a second follow up meeting and we looked at materials so we decided to go with them.

The salesman was very friendly and easy to work with. The estimate was the least expensive of the three I received. The workers were on time in the morning and worked diligently, but most of them were difficult to communicate due to a language barrier. I am fairly sure the work was subcontracted out due to some of the paperwork at completion having a different company's name on it. The work took two days to complete, but the roof and skylights were finished on the first day. The work crew left for the day without any communication regarding when the siding would be completed and I discovered they crushed my downspouts in order to collect the roofing nails from the previous roof's removal. I called the company to complain about the downspouts and they came the next day to replace my downspouts and repair the siding as planned. The quality of the work was good.

This is the third time we have hired S&K to work on our house - please see previous posts. I am very picky and detailed orientated and so is S&K Roofing and Windows. Everyone we have dealt with there is a true professional and that includes the office staff too! This time we wanted to replace several contractor-grade single hung windows that had lots of issues - all difficult to open/close, a couple were jammed and all were very drafty and they were a major pain to clean. S&K came out and recommended the BF Rich Cabernet R-5 double hung replacement windows along with the Green Shield Dual-Glazed window package. We even drove to their Eldersburg showroom to check out the windows - my wife loved them, especially the double hung feature (makes cleaning very easy). S&K's staff said it would be about 3-4 weeks to order the custom made windows. About three weeks later they called and said the windows were in and we scheduled a day for the work. The window crew showed up on time and laid down drop cloths every where. The two men were very efficient, hard working and very professional. I had removed all the blinds and curtains for easy access. The installers told me they will install the new windows in such a manner that we will be able to reuse our custom made blinds and shades. They worked all day and replaced all nine windows by late afternoon. They cleaned up everything. They showed me how the windows worked and pointed out several details. All in all everything looked and worked excellent. My only concern was the odor of the caulk which was rather strong and took several days to air out the house (and that is the ONLY complaint I have had with S&K concerning three major jobs on our house). A quick word here about S&K's crews, they seem dedicated to certain tasks. We have had three jobs done by three different crews all dedicated to their specific specialty. A couple of years ago we had a siding crew that knew their job and did an outstanding repair job on our siding. The roofing crew, again dedicated professional roofers, did a fantastic job on our roof replacement. The window crew were focused on window replacement. This makes a big difference to me - these crews know what they are doing. We are going to have S&K do the windows along the back of the house later this summer. I have said it before and I will say it again - I highly recommend S&K Roofing and Windows to Angie's List members. You might pay a few more bucks but remember - you get what you pay for. You will not be disappointed.

Took several price quotes from different roofing companies. S&K Roofing was above the average quote but the only company to spell out in detail exactly what they would do. Visiting their showroom helped answer several questions we had. Was already familiar with S&K as they did an outstanding repair job on our house following the Sandy storm. Our existing roof was 15 years old and we were loosing shingles just about every decent storm we had. On the installation date a large crew of six showed up, spread tarps around our house and covered our extensive landscaping. They removed the existing layer of roof shingles in an orderly fashion cleaning up as they went along. They installed 15 lb felt with Ice and Water Guard in the valleys and long the first three feet of roof near the edges. They installed new pipe collaras and new aluminum apron flashing, new drip edge and even re-installed my gutter screening. They installed the new roofing shingles and the new ridge vent system wherever needed. They cleaned up for the day and came back the next morning and finished up the job. They cleaned up everything including using a magnet to pick up all the nails. The crew was very professional and respected our property and our home. No loud radios were blasting! They worked steady and with a purpose. The lead roofer was very respectful and answered all my questions and concerns. S&K is a great company to do business with. The roof looks fantastic and we have had no issues whatsoever. I made a good choice and would highly recommend S&K Roofing to other Angie's' List members.
