We contacted the Stevensville office of Kent Island Abbey Carpet & Floor (which also has an outlet in Easton, Maryland) in December, 2013, to give us an estimate to recarpet the second and third floors of our townhouse. Their employee Sherry came to our residence wearing spiked high heel shoes. We did not take much notice at the time, but as soon as she left we observed small indentations in the hardwood floor where she had been standing at the kitchen counter to write, caused by shifting weight on her heels while at the counter. The floor is only two years old and still in excellent condition. We called to leave her a message about the damage. Two days later she returned the call and without surprise or apology simply asked if we wanted to speak with Gene (the owner). I said yes, and later received a call from him. He came out to our residence, looked at the floor, said it could be fixed by his crew, especially since i had purchased and saved extra boards from the installation two years ago. We demurred, saying that if it was to repaired we wanted the same professionals who did the installation to replace the boards. I contacted the hardwood floor specialists who gave me an estimate of $650 to replace the nine contiguous boards with damage. other boards also were damaged by Sherry's heels but we deemed only those nine necessitated repair. Throw rugs had been protecting many of the other areas from damage although a few indentations were visible in other areas. I wrote a letter on 4 Feb 2014 to the owner detailing the estimate from the hardwood floor specialists, asking him to provide funds of $650 to enable repair of our floor using my own wood inventory. To date, 25 March 2014, we have received no reply.

Response from Kent Island Abbey Carpet & Floor
It was never proven that our sales person's heels ever did damage to the clients floor. However, we did offer to remedy the situation by replacing all of the damaged boards. We asked the client for the make & color of the wood, so that we could order the same. The owner took it upon himself to contact the company that originally installed the hardwood & had them do the board replacement. In turn, the client sent us the bill for the floor repair. This was unacceptable to us since we had offered to fix the floor at no cost to the client, & he had not advised us of his intentions to have another company perform the repairs. We've been in business for 45 years, & you don't stay in business this long by displeasing every client that crosses our path. We do our best to satisfy every client to the best of our ability, & have been doing so for quite some time. If we ever have the opportunity to serve this client again, I'm sure he'd change his views about us.
