After explaining my backyard erosion issues on the phone, I made an appointment to meet with J&G Landscape Design to show Jeff Potter the eroded area in person. After studying the sinkhole damage and drainage downspouts, he developed a plan to reroute the rain water and replace defective pipes and joints that were also leaking water into the garage. He sketched his plan out for me and charged $75.00 for his analysis/recommendation. This sum would be applied as a credit toward the cost of any work I had done. I agreed to use J&G and signed a contract detailing the work and payment schedule and paid $181.00 at that time in June. They explained they would start my project in a few months if that suited my schedule. The work was done in early September since I was out of town in August when they were ready to start. The work was done quickly to lay new pipes with clean-outs that were routed under the lawn into a large drain lined with stones. The eroded area was filled with new dirt, tamped down securely and shrubs returned to their places. Mulch was placed over the rebuilt area and the lawn sod replaced and watered well. The clean-up was very thorough. The job took about 1 1/2 days to complete Now I am looking forward to a big rain storm to see how it all works to keep the garage dry and backyard protected from erosion. I recommend this company for their engineering ability and landscaper skills. Many companies I interviewed seemed daunted by this type of project but J&G seemed to enjoy the challenge of figuring out an appropriate remedy.
Description of Work: J&G replaced underground downspout drainage pipes, and installed new ones to reroute storm water into a riverstone spillway. They also filled sink holes with more soil and rebuilt an area eroded by storm water. They weeded and added mulch around the plantings.

They were very busy so this was a long process, but worth it! Contracted in April but postponed installation of plants until September. Everything went well.
Description of Work: My backyard has always been a mess. Three large white pines and the builder's removal of top soil mean that not even weeds would grow! Jeff Potter designed a back garden that my grandchildren can play on and it looks beautiful.

The project was initially delayed because of all the rain this spring. The only criticism I have is that I had to contact them twice to get status on when the job would actually start. Once the job began, everything went very smoothly, the lawn was cleared and the new beds installed with minimal interruption for my husband, who works at home. It took them two days to do everything, Friday the 18th and the following Monday, the 21st. They left behind a sprinkler system to make sure the lawn was watered properly for the first few weeks after it was installed.
Description of Work: Removed two trees from the front yard, removed old flagstones from the side yard, installed three stone lined planting beds in the side yard, took out old bushes and removed ivy and bamboo in the front yard. Replaced the side yard with mulch and mulched the front bushes and trees. Reinstalled the front yard with fresh sod.

I can not think of enough superlatives! From the first meeting with Jeff Potter (the J in JG) the friendliness, competence, professionalism and responsiveness of this organization has been stunning. Is it just my view or are most companies today just stumbling through a preset dance with PR but no follow through (e.g.: the computer system for health care)? I was impressed with Jeff's comprehension of what I wanted with very little input from me, but my introduction to Greg (the G in JG) and Matt and the beautiful and complete plans and contract presented on my second meeting with Jeff and my visit to their headquarters made me pretty sure I had selected the right company. Today, four days into the job I am blown away. The crew, headed by Francisco, arrives each day on time at 7AM and works straight through until 3. What they have accomplished in four days is amazing. All of the old landscaping (except for what I was keeping, which is being watered and kept alive) has been removed, the drive has been removed and prepared for pavers and asphalt, the drainage pipes have been laid front and back, and a beautiful and artistic paver walkway has been installed in the rear. When I say removed, I mean out of my sight......their trucks come and go like clockwork, bringing supplies and removing debris. The job site is left in perfect order and they have been concerned that I have safe access. The production supervisor, Jim Logan, arrives every morning and checks on yesterdays work and verifies the days doings with the crew and with me. I have been impressed again with a JG representative, as Jim even knows the way the water flows on my property and has suggested very good alterations to the plan that could only be seen as the job progresses. Well, as I said I can't find enough superlatives for this company. When people come in and tear up your surroundings it is just a bit nerve racking, to say the least. I can not tell you how confident this well greased, but customer attentive company has made me, and continues to make me feel. I'll put in an addendum when the job is finished. Oh, and my dog has sniffed and approved each one and looks forward to their arrival each day. He is particularly attached to Jim Logan. One week in and I am even more positive and excited about the work JG is doing! The back yard is sodded and planted and they are moving to the front for a new front stoop, walk and parking pad. Ta Da! I have the most beautiful landscaping with lights and so clearly easy to maintain! I am the happy customer of JG and I recommend them highly, not one hiccup in the whole process, my best experience with any major home-owning (40 years) project. In fact, the best experience with a company of any kind.
Description of Work: This was a total redo of my lot, front and back. New drive and parking pad, walkways, lighting, fencing, plantings and sod.

All of my interactions with J&G were very positive. These gentlemen clearly know what they are doing and run a very professional business. We paid $75 to have J&G come to our home to provide an estimate. We ended up not using J&G because the price was a bit high. They quoted us $5,800 for the following work (directly from the quote provided by J&G): - Foundation soil will be excavated to a depth of 36? starting on the street side of the chimney up to the front left corner and across the front foundation to the gas meter, including sides of the front stoop. The house foundation in this area will be cleaned and inspected for cracks or voids. If necessary, additional cement parging will be added as necessary; being raised to a final elevation of a few inches above the necessary soil elevation for positive drainage. Foundation waterproofing will be applied to all exposed areas. All excavated area will be backfilled with compactable soil and compacted in 6? lifts. - From the house side of the existing stone path back to the rear side of the chimney and extending to the left property line, surface grading will be conducted to create natural looking positive drainage away from the foundation walls. Soil will be brought onto site and installed to raise the grade at the house, creating the positive drainage. These grades will connect into the natural drainage patterns on the property. If necessary, the existing stepping stones will be hand removed and set aside during the grading process and returned to current location after grading is complete. - All disturbed and graded lawn areas will be fertilized, limed, and sodded with tall fescue sod. The initial watering of the sod will be performed. - All planting bed areas within the scope of work will be mulched with shredded hardwood mulch. - All bio degradable material from the above services will be removed from site and recycled. Any other debris will be disposed of properly. - Existing downspout on corner will remain as is After informing J&G that we would not be using their services, J&G was very understanding and even gave us guidance for trying to fix some of the problem on our own. We will definitely contact J&G again for any significant work to get an estimate.

Met with Mr. Jeff Potter several times before start of work to be clear on what I wanted. Retaining wall: he failed to provide stone wall as discussed, even though we had example of neighbor's stone wall--that J&G had done. For the most part, he used stones I already had--but "those stones couldn't provide the appearance" I had asked for he tells me after the wall is done and I'm complaining. I think Mr. Potter should have been experienced enough to know this and should have said this before the work was started. He did try to "fix" the appearance of the wall, but it only ended up looking worse. Patio: Instead of excavating and placing flagstones in packed soil as requested, his crew added soil and placed mulch between flagstones. Within 3 weeks, the soil and most of the mulch had washed away. Also soil (mud) from stone wall and small bank drained onto patio leaving it not useful as a patio. Twice his project manager/crew were so late to morning meetings (more than 45 mins, calls to find out if they planned to show up) that I had to leave for work and reschedule (wasted leave). I feel like I had to pull the landscape design out of them (he charged me $500.00 for the design plan). The plan was to include plant recommendations, but after Jeff Potter had provided the design for the retaining wall and patio, he didn't provide plant recommendations. I had to walk over every part of the yard and ask "What could be planted here?" AND I still ended up calling and emailing more than 9 times to get them to finish the plan and send it ! Mr. Greg Potter was always extremely nice and polite when I had to deal with the J&G office. When I talked to Mr. Jeff Potter about the discrepancy between what we had discussed and what he delivered he said "We can't meet your expectations." I wish he had shared that before he wasted my money and time!

Response from J & G Landscape Design Inc
Each and every client relationship is important to J&G. We regret that Ms. [member name removed] was not fully satisfied with our work. The project outlined to us was to be the first step of a larger plan. We were asked to create a patio area in the lowest area of the rear space that would hold storage for an upcoming renovation. As such, we recommended setting patio stone in compacted soil with surrounding mulch as well as using Ms. [member name removed] existing stone for the new wall. These recommendations were made to keep the project as inexpensive as possible. To existing patio area had a cross slope with both a high side and a low side. To install the patio, one area was cut down and the other area was raised to make a level surface. With regards to the wall, J&G used the same construction method and crew as the neighbor's wall Ms. [member name removed] liked but the overall effect looked different because they were made from different stones. As we moved through the design process, it became evident that Ms. Davidson had specific plant preferences and interest in the selections. It was our assumption that plants would not be installed until after the house construction so we are sorry that our recommendations were not provided at the time of the initial plan presentation.

Excellent installation, high quality work on both the driveway and wall. The end product looks great and is well constructed. They completely re-installed a fence that had to be moved due to the construction, and we had not expected them to do this extra piece of work, but it was much appreciated. Very professional organization and reasonably priced for the work performed. The only slight negative was that they started the work two months later than originally planned, though that was primarily due to the unusually bad weather over the winter.

Provider was very pleasant and prompt. appreciate that.
Description of Work: $75 CHARGE FOR BID. Contacted provider through Angie's for an estimate on a concrete walkway. He e-mailed back immediately then called and was very professional and polite but said the company charges $75 for the estimate. This comes off the cost of the work if you contract with them. Glad he gave me fair warning about the charge. He said the company considers this a "consultation" rather than an estimate. We declined. This is one of 3 Angie's providers we've contacted for an estimate but the first to charge. Can see his point, it takes work time to meet and write up the bid and Spring is their busy season but we are a bit disappointed.

J & G were very professional and their proposal was very comprehensive. From the initial contact with Greg, through the meeting with Jeff, and the communications regarding the proposal, they took the time to listen to our concerns, educate us on the various options, and provide a proposal that reflected the work we wanted performed. We did pay the $75 fee for the consultation and I believe it was money well spent even though we elected to go with a different contractor. During our consultation, Jeff took the time to discuss the drainage challenge we were having and the various solutions we would likely receive. There is no doubt in my mind that J & G's proposal would have addressed our issues; however, we opted for a lesser approach due to the cost of the comprehensive solution.
Description of Work: We contacted J & G to get an estimate regarding drainage issues in our backyard, as well as, adding landscaping to the space. They met with us, evaluated the issues we were having, discussed options for addressing the issues, and suggested plantings for the space.

Response from J & G Landscape Design Inc
We regret that J&G Landscape Design was unable to help with this request. J&G is a full service design/build firm and though we have 3 Maryland certified professional horticulturists on staff, the service requested by [member name removed] is better suited for the skill set of a licensed arborist of which there are many on Angie’s List. We thought we communicated this politely (though possibly not successfully) and are happy to provide additional referral, if needed.

The work was done quickly and after excavation the landscape was completely restored. The gutter work was included in the estimate and arranged for by J&G so that we didn't have to arrange this ourselves. One caveat is that we haven't yet had any torrential rain since the work was done so we'll provide an update when this happens. Anyway, we were very pleased with the professionalism and expertise they demonstrated and would highly recommend J&G.
Description of Work: We had a drainage problem which threatened to cause basement flooding in a very heavy rain. We used Angie's list to find highly rated companies, and found that J&G had the most reviews for external drainage work, and the reviews were excellent. After talking to Jeff we were convinced that his approach was sensible and his long experience with such problems gave us confidence. The company kept us informed about the schedule and came promptly when they were to start. They also arranged for the gutter to be replaced with a larger one which drained into another area.

I was impressed because they completed all of the work in three days. There was always three men working and sometimes 8 people working. They were punctual and finished the work on time.

Throughout the process they were very responsive, listening to our concerns and adapting to our preferences. They left the property in good condition at the end of each day. Summary: they exceeded my expectations and I have every intention of using them again. Great people, fair prices, excellent work, and they married my vision with plants and a plan perfectly. My only hesitation in writing this review is it might make it harder to get on their schedule. Details: One side of our property borders a busy street and foot traffic is expected to increase significantly next year. Rather than put up a standard fence, we thought it would be nicer to have a green/living fence to provide a border for pedestrians, as well as our young child. The border would also serve to block the traffic view from our deck and eventually reduce noise. Out of the 6 people I called, only 3 gave estimates and only J&G helped us figure out a plan that didn?t break our budget, maximized our lawn space, and was in line with our vision. During the initial visit, they listened to our ideas and bounced some of their own off of us. Upon hearing what we were after, they suggested two plants for the property line, involving us in deciding. They also pointed out another area we consider screening, given where the deck was relative to the source of the foot traffic. He also made sound suggestions on how to maximize the lawn space. This was on our list because there were large wood-chip spots from where we had 3 large oaks taken down. It's worth noting that the initial visit had a fee of $75 associated with it and compared to others who both charged and did not, J&G provided the most time spent during the consultation and value added for the visit. The estimate we got was fair in price and detailed in the work to be performed; a deposit was required to get on the schedule. Prior to the work beginning, they came to walk through, in detail, where things would be planted and make any minor, final modifications required before beginning. The crew arrived as scheduled and finished on the expected date. The process was smooth and they answered every question start to finish. Each day it became clearer how great the ideas were and the execution was flawless. The crew was friendly and the crew chief was always available and knowledgeable in answering my questions. They also didn?t mangle the rest of the yard doing their work as others have in the past. Lastly, I appreciated their style (down to earth) and candor from the first time they came for the estimate. I was even happier to see this last throughout the entire process. They have also figured out that magical blend of delivering a pleasing customer service, while still running their business. As I mentioned, we have already engaged them on a future project; highly recommended.
Description of Work: J&G (as well as 3 others) provided estimates to plant a hedge row/living fence along 1.25 sides of my property with the goal of providing a privacy and foot traffic barrier. Additionally, there were some areas of the lawn that needed "fixing" due to El Direcho forcing us to take down some trees.

I contacted three companies to provide plans and estimates on the work we wanted done. J&G were prompt in their response both for the initial visit and the estimate. From the time of the original visit in late May to the completion of the project in October, time tables were met. We found the crews to be very professional, efficient, and courteous. Jim, the supervisor, spent time with us on each visit going over the details, answering our questions, and meeting our requests.
Description of Work: Because we contacted J&G late in the spring, our project was divided in two parts. In late June a small project was done in the back yard relaying a rock bed near the pool area. On October 9th, the crew arrived promptly in the early morning to remove a row of boxwood and sod the area in the front yard. Two very large shrubs along with smaller azaleas were removed from two areas and new plants put in. There was some additional trimming of trees and shrubs also. All the work was completed by late afternoon.

J&G did excellent work throughout the project. Their concept of how to redesign our stairway entrance and how to place new plantings was very helpful and we took virtually all of their suggestions. On the other hand, we had some ideas of our own that were not part of their original design. and J&G willingly embraced our modifications and made the whole Plan come together beautifully. Their men are a pleasure to work with; very helpful and very friendly. The work was done on time and on budget. We ran into a serious problem that was not J&G's fault. At the time the sod was installed, we hit a very rainy and hot and humid stretch of weather. That afflicted the new sod with fungus that destroyed approximately half the sod. J&G accepted responsibility and completely replaced the sod.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced entranceway stairs with new stairs and stone risers; replaced grass with fresh sod; removed large shrubs in front of house and at curbside and replaced with flowers and smaller shrubs; removed dead and dying trees from backyard and replaced with new trees; installed irrigation system for all flowerbeds and newly planted trees; installed accent lighting for trees and flowerbeds.

It was extremely hot and humid but the workmen worked through the day, every day, until the project was completed. The workmen were polite, hard-working , and kept the job site neat and clean. Jim, the on-site supervisor, was there off and on to guide the project. He was always available for questions and consultation. I enjoyed working with Jeff. His selection of shrubs and trees has transformed my backyard into a wooded haven. I am extremely happy with the outcome. I would definitely use them again and I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: The back part of my backyard backs up to woods where no grass would grow. It was extremely unattractive, with just dirt and mud. They turned an ugly eyesore into a beautiful area with trees, shrubs, and perennials that will give color and interest all year. They did more than originally discussed, to ensure that the overall look of the whole yard would be unified and attractive.

We had a great experience with J&G from start to finish. Jeff was attentive and listened to our preferences regarding plants and the overall goal of the redo. He was honest and responsive. I appreciated his willingness to come back out to the house to go through the plant selections one more time prior to the scheduled start of the project. Jeff gave us a quote to also redo the back landscaping and the front walk, which we will most likely look to do later this year or next.

Description of Work: Jeff from JG Landscape Design arrived on time for our design meeting and spent a little more than an hour reviewing our property, answering questions and providing a detailed design plan for our landscaping needs. He was extremely knowledgeable about horticulture and drainage and grading issues. On the spot he came up with a very unique, functional and beautiful plan for us. They specialize in the work that they did for us. There was a $75 consultation fee for them to come out which was applied to the work. The reason for this fee is because they come out apply their expertise and take the time to give you a needs analysis. We did get estimates from others as well but they were not as experienced or qualified. We also researched and met with a homeowner who used them thru Angie's List as well. By this we decided to use them. The contract was very professional. From the very beginning they wanted us to be happy. They did exactly what they said they would do. We had a foreman assigned who checked in with us often. It turned out wonderfully. The major water problem was solved. Jeff and Greg the owners along with the foreman Jim, went the extra mile, they are excellent. We now have people driving by admiring our landscaping because it looks that good.
Description of Work: They did major landscaping site work including: resolved water issues on 3 sides of the home, the did paving and put in a patio, they took our one car cracked drive and turned it into a beautiful 2 car driveway.

I contacted J&G Landscaping via their website and received a call the very next day from one of the Owners to discuss their services and schedule a time for the estimate. Jeff arrived to perform the estimate for services which where to include reconstruction of a collasped stone retaining wall, installation of a new stone patio and relandscaping of almost all of our planting beds around the property. After discussing at length (at least an hour) the goals of the project, Jeff and I selected specific plants and "designed" the plant layouts of the new beds. We even discussed the stone to be used for the patio. I paid $75 for this design consultation. He sketched up the design on his ipad, but did not provide me with any specific plan - I was not expecting anything more in this regard. I awaited the proposal which took about a week to get, again, this was in line with my expectations. After reviewing the proposal, I was quite disappointed. Our primary goal of the project was to rebuild the retianing wall. The proposal was to rebuild only the limited areas that had collapsed and it was for approximately $11,000! The rest of the wall is in bad shape and another significant portion has collapsed since J&G reviewed it - clearly the whole thing requires replacement. I contacted J&G (Jeff) via email with a list of several concerns and scope modifications from his proposal and requested that he revise the scope accordingly and provide the updated price for all services we requested. I did not hear back from them after three weeks. The original estimate was for nearly $35,000 The price they quoted was so far above the rest of the quotes we got (about $10,000-15,000 to do everything) that clearly they tried to overprice the work and not get the job. The lack of professionalism in not even returning my email to respond to my questions or tell me that they could not do the work for me was disappointing. While I felt like I was getting a great company that cared during the initial design consultation, I was very disappointed with their follow up service and price quote. Look elsewhere

Response from J & G Landscape Design Inc
The team at J&G was very disappointed to read (Member name removed) post and quickly responded to the review as this is very unusual feedback. We agree with the (Member's names removed) review that Jeff's initial communications, consultation and contract delivery were sincere and smooth. The challenge we faced was in timely communication for contract revisions/clarifications. It was not our intention to ignore an email and admittedly during peak landscape season, phone conversations work best, as stated in an earlier message. We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused and refunded the consultation fee to the (Member's name removed). We hope our insights and outline of work helped in their ultimate decision making for moving forward.

This was the completion of a complete backyard makeover that we started with this company last year. We split up the project over two years to spread out the costs. This year, all of the plants were installed. The plants appear very healthy and are nicely situated. Each plant is watered by a drip irrigation system that runs on a central timer. It's all automatic, which is super convenient. We first hired J&G Landscape Design in 2011. As my review from last year states, they came up with the design and plant list, and we hired them to complete all of the site preparation last year. J&G does a great job and I would highly recommend them. They keep their customers very informed throughout the process. For instance, they told me when we were about 10 days out from production and then gave us 24 hours notice before the work began. They thought that it would take two days for the work this year, but they finished in a day. We are very happy with our new yard!
Description of Work: Installation of a tree, many shrubs, and other perennials in back yard, plus a drip irrigation system and 3" of mulch.
